Guardians can perform pretty nice DPS as it turns out. Not as bursty as Warriors, but our sustainable DPS is quite good. And we’re very versatile. DPS to Control to Healing to Support and all the hybrids in between (but then again, we’re not the only ones). I would say that we’re the most well-rounded out of all of the classes. And personally, the fun factor is way up there. A flashy heavy armored front-liner.

Ahh, that’s great to hear! That seems like what I may be looking for. Thank you very much for the response

don’t listen to daecollo, he’s known by his stupid comments in warrior section

+1
Listen to this guy. It’s wise to avoid daecollo.
Also, be wary of some of the people posting. A lot of their comments contradict each other across threads. There are quite a few guys whose builds mysteriously change every time they post.

Hi guys,
And yes….another one of these. Lol.
I’ve spent a fair amount of time trying the different profs of the game and finally narrowed it down. My main will be an Ele, simply because of their versality in so many situations. BUT, i get burnt out quick and I want a melee driven class. (Hated thief, btw)

Then you probably don’t want Warrior, Warriors are either shout/banner or rifle or longbow, all of them will help your team and give you lots of ranged damage.

Ok, I got ya. Yeah, I mainly don’t want to be “stuck” with having to build a certain way, i.e. full defense to survive dungeons. I understand I won’t be running glass cannon in dungeons, as I’m certainly not on the skill level yet to time dodging, distance, etc. So I guess I’m wondering, can I be survivable in dungeons (if played half-way intelligently, of course), but still lay the smackdown with DPS properly? Or does a Warrior have to load up on Def traits?

Don’t listen to him. With the current state of the warrior, you have a steep learning curve because we have very little to no sustainability.
Just spec a bit into defense, go defense-based armor, and pick up a shield + endure pain if you extremely bad at dodging and new to dungeons

Thank you for that. Also, do we contribute decently to a group? Like our banners and shouts? Is it odd if a warrior would run with full banners going or full shouts, or a mix of both filling Util bar?

How well you contribute is more based on how well you play
That being said, banner warrior is an excellent source of aid for the team. The regeneration is very nice as well… and nothing like instant resurrecting your team with Warbanner. However, if there is another source of regeneration, it is better to avoid going banners.

Then there are the shout builds. It’s not a bad way to learn how to play as your DPS is still decent and you get a few extra heals… The best thing about this is that you get used to the ranges of shouts… but I honestly would not recommend it. The heals are rather small and not worth the amount of efficient power you sacrifice. If you really love supporting though, it’s not a bad build.

If you go three shouts, make sure they are “For Great Justice” “On My Mark” “Shake it Off”
You want to maximize boon duration w/ runes and trait line. It’s a pretty good learners build although I would recommend just getting Knight’s exotics and learning from there.
After hundreds of hours of gameplay, I still use full Knight’s w/ Berserker accessories. 300ish power for 2x damage mitigation =

Well explained. Thank you very much. And thank all you guys for taking the time to answer. I really appreciate the advice

What do you want from the gameplay? Are you speaking of sPvP, WvWvW, PvE? What specifically of PvE/sPvP/WvWvW? Do you want to level quickly, be good at DEs, run dungeons, be a roamer in WvW, be a bunker in sPvP, do hotjoin, etc.

“What should I play?” is not a valid question without specific parameters.

edit: And then he edits his post.

Yeah, sorry about the late edit. Noob at forum posts…

Hi guys,
And yes….another one of these. Lol.(I posted on Warr forums as well :-/ )

So anyways, I have some questions and I’ll try to explain my interests.
I like the in-your-face, aggressive style of the warrior, but I’ve had a good number of ppl talk about how they get boring. Tying in with that, I’d like to know about their versatility from any that know. Oh, and I’ll mainly be running dungeons, MAYBE eventually WvW once I get a better grip of things.
Perhaps some pros and cons of the Guardian class from the experienced players? Especially if you have any knowledge of Warriors, they’re pros and cons will be appreciated.
My main worry with Guardians is I’d like to play it more aggressively (a lil more offense-oriented); though I know they do not compare to Warriors DPS, how DO they fare DPS-wise?
-So I suppose in a nutshell:Guardian- Versatility? Offensive prowess? i.e. basically, can I hurt some stuff or will it take forever to knock a dent in something? And fun-factor.

-And for those that have time as a Warrior: Do warriors get boring, because I don’t wanna be like the unfortunate ones that have hit 80 and wished to God they rolled something different. And their survivability, i.e. Dungeons?Versatility?
Thanks so much, guys, and sorry ahead of time for another thread like this :-/

Thanks so much guys, and sorry for another one of these threads. The others I’ve read didn’t exactly touch on the topics I’m curious on.

Wow, thank you guys very much for all the input and different perspectives. I didn’t expect so many outlooks and opinion, but I’m very appreciative
At least now I know they’re not impossible to play or anything. But I do like the fact that they’re different and possibly “under-estimated”, even though I’m sure a lot of times the payoff isn’t as good as it maybe should be.
But I’ll definitely take all these views into consideration and will probably just have to try it out myself and judge it to my own playstyle.
Thanks again, guys

Thief in Dungeons

Thief is better. Ranger should be better but sadly the pet screwed that up most of the time. The pet will constantly die, trigger traps and agro mobs. I have Thief and Ranger and Thief is better at pretty much anything because of pets… Only thing Ranger has is being good at PvE.

Great! Well, kinda sad to hear, but also helps my choosing. I know Ranger forums have been full of QQ’s about the prof. for quite some time. And I know all classes have their amount of that on forums, but it seems pretty overwhelming with rangers and it just makes me wonder if there’s not some root truth to character flaws/bugs to a point that it just makes the class “not fun.”
I also have found some rare threads with anti-Ranger QQ, stating that when mastered, theyre unstoppable. But I kinda doubt I’ll be any class master, as I don’t have that kind of time to dedicate, and may therefore get too frustrated with no pew pew. My main question really was about thieves being very viable/usable in dungeons. As I mostly only see or read about them for PvP…

Thanks a ton, guys. I appreciate the detailed advice. That info helps a lot. I’m a little intimidated with the pet control, as I’ve read how important it is to watch and control your pet, but I’ve also read that with time, it can just kinda become a part of your rotation, so to speak. I appreciate the help fellas

Great, I’ll certainly take the info into consideration. What might be my best secondary wpn set option? And should I trait defensively pretty heavy, or like, half n half maybe? I’m thinking perhaps my best bet might be to go heavy def at first, then once i get better, sacrifice some def for a little more offensive output? Maybe condition dmg is a good route?

Hey guys!
I’ve also posted this topic in Ranger forums as well, but I’m torn between a Ranger and a Thief for leveling to 80. And my primary interest for now is Dungeons. I can’t seem to find much help, and I’m also a little impatient to scan through all the forum topics about this question.
But I’m mainly wanting to know if thieves are practical and/or needed in dungeons. I understand they can bring some good utility to a group and that’s great.
Maybe in a bit more detail, could some of the experienced thieves grant me some advice/thoughts on rolling a thief for dungeons; pros/cons, tips, etc.
Oh, and I dont mind support roles at all. Im not interested so much in faceroll DPS and D/D, as i dont think it would suit dungeons very well….because I know I would die very quickly. I guess I have my sights set on SB and maybe S/P for trash? Not sure, need you help! Thanks guys

Hey Rangers,
I’m having a hard time finding anything useful in these forums for what I am asking. I’m posting in the Thief forum about this same thing.
I’m just curious as to how a Ranger fares for dungeons?
And I have no particular role in mind and I dont know what their forte might be in dungeons, but I dont mind playing support at all, because I know not enough people do it.
But I’m torn between the two classes and I really have no interest as of yet in Pvp/WvW…and finding thief dungeon stuff I’ve had no luck yet either. So I’m basically asking for some info/thoughts and advice from some experienced Rangers about dungeon pros or cons concerning the Ranger class. Thanks in advance

A bow? On a Mesmer? hmmm… While it would be cool. I think not… Anet said that Scholar classes cannot and should not use Bows/rifles/shields/maces. Kinda like adventurer classes cannot use scepters/staves/maces etc etc…

I can understand their viewpoint. But man, how cool would that be to have a Mesmer bow, and have it be like on the movie Immortals? With the whole magical arrow animation from pulling string back? I could see something like that kinda fitting well with a Mes. Just an opinion :-/

Butterflies wings make illusions to fool predators that is after it.

So I say they fit us, also butterflies are use in the chaos theory. Which again fits are class perfect.

Now about the color Purple, first it have been use for Emperors of Rome. Then from their it was use for most royalty and the Pop.

Basically Purple is a sign of royalty, which again fits the Mesmer, since they have a air of nobility in most of the lore.

Now about Pink, first it was not a female color until the 1920’s. It was stolen by girls during that time.

However, before then it was thought that blue was a girl color and pink was a guy color. Basically it all about culture, what your culture says what you should like, you will like.
In the past pink was taught since was young that it was a manly color and so it was treated as such and blue was treated as a female color and so it was treated that way.
Hell in the 1910’s on a survey over 70% of all males like pink, and over 90% of all females was big on blue.

ANYWAY what makes pink so good for Mesmer is pink is not a real color, it not in the spectrum and no mix of the color spectrum makes pink.

Pink is actually a illusion are brains make up.

Edit: male here, but love the theme/color for the mez. Fits the class perfectly, so good job ArenaNet

100% Fact, good sir. Very true stuff. I was the same way with the purpley butterflies and felt it necessary to roll a female so there would be no confusion of sexuality lol. Then i read that same information about “pink” and also about butterflies being like, some kind of staple for confusion/chaos. Then i realized as well that rolling a female was an odd way of protecting my “man-ish” personality, and seemed even more contrary to what i was trying to accomplish lol.
But, the way I’ve personally tried to see it is that it just adds to the mindkitten that we, as mesmers, accel at. Nothing better than facerolling somebody and leaving them in a swathe of floaty butterflies to add to the confusion of “what the hell just happened”…

Hey Rislo. The biggest necro problem is that the minion AI, especially for the Flesh Golem, isn’t perfect. They will occasionally stand around while you are fighting something, and the Flesh Golem is always picking fights when you’re standing around.

Other than that the class had the most bugs at release compared to other classes so that contributed to the negative atmosphere. However, I have been playing a necro since the game released and love it! It is my favorite class. I was able to find interesting, viable builds mostly by ignoring the conventional wisdom on the forums and experimenting. So don’t get too down on what you read around here, official forums are notorious for that sort of thing anyway, for any game. You will definitely be rockin’ at level 80 if you invest some time into your build decisions.

Some high-level sPvP players have some problems with the profession as well, but unless you are looking to join a high-level team that will not affect you. I don’t understand those complaints too much since I don’t play tournaments.

The class has only been getting better since release with bug fixes and buffs. I suggest you stick with it.

lettucemode,
Thank you for the encouraging reply. And i fully understand how overall forum complaints can be ( played WoW since ‘05). I’ll admit, I havent taken the time to do any in-depth research on the class as of yet, so was kinda trying to cut to the chase the lazy way lol. But I appreciate the positive feedback and can also appreciate the actual issues going on.
Initially, actually, I had read some bad stuff about our minion AI, and without looking into it further, i’ve just simply avoided having minions lol. It’s worked well for me so far, but i can deff understand the frustration it can cause, not allowing ppl to play the class the way they might fully desire. As with what I’ve gathered was kind of a big deal with this game was the option of diverse play. (Which initially attracted me to GW2 as well) Good luck fellas. I hope we get some love.

Rislo.6293

hey guys, this will be my first forum post. But what i would like to know specifically is what exactly our problems are? Granted, I’ve only got my Necro to level 39, and I dont have damage meters or the like to judge my performance, but I haven’t found much to be wrong with the profession….yet, at least. So, from more experienced players with the prof, could you inform me or possibly link me to a proper forum to find such info. It’s just really disheartening to hear that we’re bad as a prof, but yet i don’t know any specifics. Im hoping to have this guy at 80 and rockin on with him. But i fear that will not be so, nor worth the effort.
And i apologize if this is the wrong thread for such a question.
