hey SCChirp, great videos, would you be able to upload them to http://www.guildwars2movies.com/ also?

Hey!
I tried to upload them there, but the uploader doesn’t seem to work very well! It just times and never finishes. But I’ll try again soon

Thanks for the idea

Player names in WvW! Your opinions?

First, allow me to introduce myself and give a really brief background of my MMOing experience. My name is David, I usually go by Tappin or Chirp in games, and I’ve been MMOing since EQ, which was my first MMO. My second was SWG and is where I was really introduced to PvP, from there I went onto GW1 where PvP was my primary focus… from that I went to LOTRO, where all I did was the Ettinmoors, which was SOMEWHAT like WvW. Then onto WoW.. where once again I did mostly PvP.

(In between those games I’ve played several other MMOs, like AoC, Warhammer, etc, but not seriously enough to really talk about it.)

In LOTRO I was probably the most known player on my server up until I quit. I spent all of my in-game time in the open PvP zone, hunting enemy players, playing with friends… Building rivalries, etc. It was an awesome time. I took an 8 month break from the game but when I returned I felt like I was even more well-known than when I had quit. Many people remembered my name, and many of my old enemies were now playing on the same side as me.

Now let me get this clear, I’m not telling you this to “toot my own horn”, but rather to make a point. LOTRO was not a very great game, but it was fun, and it was fun because of the people who played it. There was always a family community feel to the entire experience. In the open world PvP area people were known. There were leaders, there were the “lone stars”, there were the trolls, etc. This would have never been possible without seeing names. You would have just been another human champion without a name, or just another warg in the zerg. Your name makes you unique from everyone else.

I want the same uniqueness in GW2. A-Net has said that they want players to feel unique, that’s why they gave us choices to decide upon when creating your character. They give you choices when doing your personal story, etc. You can make your armor look the way you want, to feel unique. To be known by others on your server.

In WvW you are just another blue, red, or green solider in a huge army. Even if you split away from the main groups and take small objectives and come across other players, they don’t know you from Adam, or every other player from your server.

Some people will claim this is for ego, and if that is your view on it, then so be it. Maybe it is? But who cares? Why not allow people the ability to be proud of their character. Let your enemies know it was you who killed them.

It’s been suggested elsewhere that there be a toggle option for allowing your name to be seen, I agree with this idea and would love to see something like this implemented!

These are my own personal thoughts on the matter, and I’m interested to hear yours!

Thank you! I’ve been looking for some good videos like these. Really helped me out, especially your exp gain video.

Thank you for the nice words! Episode 3 has been a favorite out of the series so far!
Thanks again,

I do feel as if the sPvP is really lacking also. It can be fun at times, but overall I feel that the maps are kind of too small. Remove the sharks from Capricon(???)… non-objective based NPCs in there… is really stupid. They are bugged out a lot of them time anyways.
Even though the sPvP is hot-joinable, I think there needs to be some sort of encouragement for staying the entire duration of the match, rather than leaving once your team starts losing.
Prompt users at the end of a match if they’d like to leave… match usually only last a few minutes anyways, which is in and of itself kind of another complaint. Matches don’t last very long, so the PvP seems to get dull really fast because you get the same 4 maps really quickly, since each match is so short.
But back to the leaving sPvP matches… So many times it happens like this:
A new match begins… 6 or so players on each side. Team Red quickly manages to capture all 3 nodes, 3 people leave from Blue team because they don’t want to try to win. Auto-balance… and 3 players who started on Red get moved to the losing team. Why do they get moved?
I dunno, but it gets old really quick. People can pull the whole.. “go back to WoW u dumb kid!”, but I’ve done BGs in WoW for over 4 years… I’d say I have over 500k HKs, and yeah they are kind of boring now… I’ve spent so much time in them. Even GW1 “BGs” were more fun than GW2 ones.
I’ve been MMOing since EQ, and have never been so hyped for a new game until GW2, just to bet let down by the sPvP.
As far as WvW… Why can’t we see enemy names? Is there any real reason for this?

Uh, these forums and a suggestion about overflow servers.

I agree with the OP, I get so sick and tired of getting the huge notification right in the middle of my screen.

Very nice, watched a couple minutes of some of the videos… awesome. I’ve been trying to play around with some non-burst oriented builds… I want to focus on winning, not spamming 222222222222222222222222222222222222222222222222222222222222 in every encounter.

Well written, look forward to trying it out soon!

Learn to Adapt is a series of videos that evaluates some of the core mechanics of Guild Wars 2, and compares them to similar mechanics in other MMOs. The series isn’t about explaining every mechanic in great detail, but rather short episodes helping new players understand how GW2 is different.

My primary objective with the series is to have fun making them, but more importantly showing players how GW2 really is different from mother other games, and how they can be successful by knowing about these mechanics and how they vary!
Whether you are new to GW2, or have played in every beta event, you might find something that you didn’t know in the series!

I hope the community enjoys the series, and if you do, please subscribe!

Current Episodes:
Episode 1: Exploration
Exploring in GW2 is vital to success! This video reviews a couple reasons why.

Episode 2: Trinity System
Regardless of your class, you need to be prepared to tank and heal, AND DPS!

Episode 3: Experience Gain
Do what you want and be rewarded with EXP!

Episode 4: Skill Bars & Abilities
GW2 uses a skill bar system unlike any other, there are many things to know about how in functions.

Episode 5: Dodging & Blocking
GW2 does have both, but not like most other games. Learn about the differences in this video.

Episode 6: Auto Attacking & Targeting
You thought GW2 had no auto attacks?! Well it does!… kind of.

Episode 7: Weapon Proficiency & Environmental Weapons
GW2 has a different weapon system than most games. Are you familiar with the way that it works?

I’d appreciate any feedback that you can provide! If you watch from Episode 1 and all the way up to the most recent episode, you’ll notice many improvements throughout the series. These improvements mostly all come from feedback that I receive from people like you!
