If conditions weren’t limited on big targets in pve they would be much more viable. It doesn’t matter on trash, but on any boss, champion, world event target, or veteran karka it would be nice if the cap was higher. As it is if you don’t stack condition dmg then adding any is counter-productive on these targets.

They probably got suckered in with one of those suspiciously low price travel deals. Then nobody told them how to get back, they aren’t allowed over by the nobles, can’t leave the beach, and nobody told them how to use the asura gate. So they drink.

Eventually the Consortium will hand them a bill they can’t pay for all the food and drink that wasn’t included in the upfront cost, and they’ll be forced into indentured servitude for generations.

But that also doesn’t explain why Kasmeer is there. Either she went there to knowingly risk her life, or she went there because Faren is a creepy stalker and she’s hoping he’ll get killed.

As has been said before, it depends on your gear, your build, and where you want to play it.

In general, if you prefer suing sb and sword you might not get as much benefit from higher crit chance and lower crit dmg than someone running lb and gs, which are slower.

Having said that, move things around, try different weapon setups and builds and see what works for you. If you find something you like, then you should try to compare damage/survivability/utility to other builds and see where you might be lacking and how you can make up for it.

Semil.8279

The problem I’m seeing that now WvWvW doesn’t have culling, the pet and the player can still see you even when your really really far away. If the pet is far enough away from the player hes essencially (out of combat.) because the player is leashing.

When that happens, rangers can just sit back and use artillery for example, while there invincible pet tanks 2-3 players (its using all its buffs+out of combat regeneration.)

Its really not fair, if you think otherwise then you should really rethink balance.

It would be useful for you to read what has been said here, and also use some common sense.

If a pet is attacked, neither it nor the ranger are put into combat. But if the pet does attack, regardless of the distance between it and the ranger, both are put into combat.

If 1 pet is taking on 2-3 players then the players are absolutely kitten. Even with full bm and buffs (which only last a few seconds, unless there’s someone buffing the ranger constantly), there’s no reason it should take that many people to kill a pet.

It feels to me, and has for a while, that PvP is the main concern for ANet. Rangers might be balanced, or nearly so, in PvP but I don’t play it so I can’t say.

But increasingly it feels like any PvE and dungeon content is just thrown in as an afterthought, and the patch reflects that.

The patch was better than I expected, but I did’t expect much so surpassing that mark isn’t impressive.

Just overall I feel disappointed. For now, at least. As usual, I hold some slim hope that there will be substantive improvements in what the community sees as the primary issues with our profession.

Even without rewriting the pet AI, just making the 3 autoattacks instant cast would be an improvement. Just for my own curiosity, across all professions how many melee-range attacks have a root and an animation delay?

I think the point is that while they may separate pve, wvw, and pvp, at the moment pve and wvw have the same skill effects.

So we cannot know if they plan to change how skills work in wvw in the next patch Jon talked about, or in some subsequent patch.

At this point I think its safer to assume that they aren’t going to separate wvw and pve until we know when its going to happen.

Blind is counted as a crowd control skil? Weakness and vulnerability? None of those do what I would consider “crowd control”. That usually means slow, stun, fear, knockback, knockdown, etc.

I suppose its just a bad tooltip unless chill/cripple/immobilize are counted as crowd control, and those cause the mob to gain Unshakable, which reduces the effectiveness of blind, weakness, and vulnerability?

Adding someone to your friends list without their consent is somewhat acceptable, as long as I have the option to remove them later or appear offline at will. If I cannot block people from seeing my information, then I should have the ability to deny it to them preemptively.

Semil.8279

But thats key to the point. 1500 range with a longbow (unique to the ranger) is one of the core mechanics of the class. Its one of the things that make a Ranger… a Ranger. Plink away at long range whilst using pets to support the group.

It is the synergy that was created for the weapon and playstyle. It is why you have access to craploads of utilities in pets that you can easily manage from long range. With pet management you can be DPS to Support with no problems. Can switch up on the go.

Versatility of the Ranger.

Your definition of “support” must be something other than the one that’s in the dictionary. By my count you used the wolf’s fear twice, though I didn’t notice any particular effect. Your jaguar was stealthed once or twice…even though the stealth is the entire point of that pet over others.

I would suggest you go collect some more pets, a jungle stalker for might and red moa for fury, used on cd during fights, would support your group more than 2 fears over the course of a dungeon.

I’m not sure why you need feel the need to constantly talk about 1500 range. Yes, we’re the only profession that can use 1500 range with a longbow, but not the only profession that can use skills from 1500 range. This has been pointed out several times, but precisely what makes the ranger’s longbow so great compared with other professions hasn’t been explained.

During the defend event if you want to stick with a gs then you should be using maul and swoop just about whenever they’re up. Since you’re forced into close quarters, using x/warhorn would likely benefit the group as a whole more than the difference between the dps from the two weapons.

If you spend the 5 points into BM I would suggest you swap pets fairly often for the quickness, especially in melee where you don’t lose the time it takes your pet to run to the target.

I think getting the pet skills to hit on time would be troublesome. Otherwise my quick mental math shows promising ability to keep chill on a target permanently, and 2 targets for extended periods, before including traits, gear, or food bonuses.

Reality will almost surely intervene with perfect possibility, notably needing the skills on your mainhand of one set in the midst of some situation preventing you from switching and procing the sigil of hydromancy.

In WvW it would be entertaining to use, provided you can survive. With axe ricochets randomly chilling, throwing frost traps, sending pets to attack random people. Even if you don’t chose to perma-chill one person, you could go a decent way towards inconveniencing a number of people.

Yes, April’s monthly isn’t super hard, but it also isn’t really easy unless you normally frequent certain places. I’m never likely to finish the jumping puzzles on any of my alts, I just hate them that much, but its okay because there are other things to concentrate on. One thing I do like is that when events and dailies promote going to lower level areas at least new players, or low level alts, don’t have to face the world alone.

Rangers do get stability on Rampage as One, 20 seconds on 120 second cd. Though I usually don’t need to use it for most of Orr, mobs attack my pet and I keep running. When I’m far enough away I switch out pets before it dies, first group of mobs leash and a new set attacks pet #2.

Though the only time I’ve been south of Shank’s Anchorage lately is when I ran the gauntlet to arah when I was really bored.

I like some of the small events in the pact-controlled area in Straits of Devastation. Undead control an area and it visibly changes, but if you get control back it changes back. If this could happen in Malchor’s and Cursed Shore it would be much more interesting. Uncontesting temples makes better loot drop from nearby enemies!

Shortbow versus Longbow

Semil.8279

So you’ve answered your own question. Originally you wanted to know how sb’s bleeds compare to lb burst. Now you say you’re unlikely to ever flank someone. So in that instance the burst will be higher, because the sb can’t bleed.

Are you trying to compare the bleeds alone vs. longbow burst, or the whole of sb damage during a span of time? We can agree that counting on flanking someone during a battle is a poor decision, so it would be equally unwise to have a condition build based on bleeds from sb 1.

It is precisely because there are so many factors involved that I might come across as belligerent or nitpicky. I’m trying to nail down exactly what you’re trying to test. We can’t test “sb is better than lb” because, as we both agree, there are so many situations and circumstances effecting performance that its impossible to have one answer to such a broad question.

Even if we were to ask: “Given a fairly mobile battle, with a mid-number of players (approx 5 on each side), would the shortbow outperform the longbow?” this situation would be incomplete because we can’t account for the professions with us or against us, and how cc effects might change potential damage situations for a shortbow or longbow, or how terrain could give you an advantage with either weapon.

So I’m asking that you try to be a little more specific in what you’re asking, so we all know what question to answer.

Now the question. Does the bleed damage from SB = to the same as the LB burst at point blank range?

I assume you mean LB 3 → LB 2 when you speak of burst dmg at point blank?

You would have to specify what traits you have when figuring this out. SB needs to flank to get bleeds, but do you have the trait for increased damage while flanking?

Does the person using the LB have the same traits, if so are they also behind the target?

And over what period of time? If you mean only during the time it takes to get LB burst off, then obviously LB will have higher dmg, that’s what burst means.

I would be curious myself if someone could come up with solid, explainable, numbers to present.

you still apply AoE burning from range with it

But it doesn’t, does it? The burning applies to one attack on one person, and the spirit MIGHT apply the buff to someone else. But “you” the player aren’t applying burning aoe, and the spirit isn’t applying aoe burning either.

Whether or not its viable isn’t really my issue, if it works for you then that’s great. But HOW it works, or might not work, does concern me.

AoE = Area of Effect, there will be 8 allies on the battle field, 2 of them i have direct control over 2 there is 0 control over, the other 4 can be yelled at over a voip on what to be doing. All 8 of them has a 35% chance (it’s hardly a small chance, it seems to happen the first hit you have the buff) to burn some poor kitten for 1s, that either = 8s of AoE on 1 poor kittener (has happenened many a times) or 1s -3s of AoE burning to each member of their team of 5 (normally what we’ll do)

Unless you’re counting a person as an area, burning from Sun Spirit isn’t AoE. The area of effect of the buff might be said to be AoE, but there is no AoE burning created here.

I won’t claim to be great at WvW, but lately I’ve been getting my own ingrained habits from previous mmos and had some success with it.

A big aspect to success, or at least a great help, is switching weapons. Not swapping between sets, but equipping the correct sets. Whenever I’m moving in WvW I use axw/horn and sb. If the fight is small and mobile I keep with that set. If its a seige, either side, or some area where there’s a convnient choke point, I’ll switch sb to lb. Similarly I’ll switch out some utility slots for traps, and my traits to make them targetable, and piercing shots for eagle eye. Dropping some combination of Muddy Terrain, Frost Trap, and Spike Trap will both slow your enemies down enough that Barrage has a good chance of hitting them for its full length, and also similarly make them better targets for everyone else.

Being able to target drop traps in front of your own keep, then drop Barrage on top of it is also fun. Granted standing up on your wall isn’t wise to do for long, but isn’t necessarily garuanteed death.

Similarly, when assaulting any keep in WvW if you can get to the base of the wall, your targetable traps can be placed so they hit people on the walls, and again follow up with barrage.

Aside from my anecdotal notes, just understand that ALL weapons and utilities are situational. Any particular build should be seen as a guide, or a suggestion. No one build will excel in all situations. So while you can’t change your trait points, feel free to change your trait skills between battles depending on what you expect.
