Given the exchange rate, in Australia, standard is $69, deluxe is $103 and ultimate is $137. That’s one hell of an expensive expansion, considering a full new release AAA title is $70-80 here and collectors editions usually come with soundtrack CDs, books, statuettes plus digital goods.
Even though I want to, I just can’t bring myself to spend that much on an expansion with an unknown amount of content. I paid $40 for the digital collectors of gw2 and I just don’t see HoT even close to doubling the amount of content (or adding a half, or a quarter or even a sixth as much).
I’m confused since you actually paid $60 for it.
I only started playing this morning and my fps was fine. Since the last patch, the game is unplayable for me, and I only just bought the thing…
Despite following instructions on the “Low fps” sticky, or even turning all my setting to lowest, I still only get 5-15fps.
To add insult to injury, the game dropped from $59.99 to $44.99 right after I bought the kitten thing and I can’t even play it! Extremely peeved at the moment, and would appreciate any help from anyone. From what I’ve read, it’s a pretty common problem atm.
Wow, you have a little too much time on your hands. Maybe I should dig through your post history for little scraps of misinformation that have no real bearing on the conversation… No wait, i have better things to do. I guess because I misremembered something from TWO YEARS ago, everything else in my post can be ignored. You should run for office or something. The spin doctor is in zzzzzzzzZZZZZZzzzzzzzzz.
My points stand. The game is too expensive, exchange rates make it ridiculously overpriced.

Yeah, I sure won’t be buying the expansion if I can’t even watch the cutscenes. I don’t know what the hell is going on in the story right now, and I normally play games for the story
The new Lion’s Arch cutscene didn’t play either… I’m missing out on awesome cutscenes. What can I do?
I just finished S2 Ep4 and the Pale Tree vision cutscene didn’t play. There was a black screen with her dialogue ending with “I’m fading” and then nothing until it brought me back to the game.
I then went back and realised that there was supposed to be a cutscene in Ep2 after entering Omadd’s machine, although I remember seeing a closeup of my char tumbling through space before dumping me back to the game.
I had to watch them on youtube. This is incredibly immersion breaking and really detracts from the story. I’ve tried verifying the game files, but I won’t be able to see if it works until I play through the story again. Not sure what else I can do to make sure I don’t miss cutscenes in the future. I almost don’t want to play the rest of S2 knowing I might not get the full experience.
Edit: Changes title to S2 cutscenes, since the intro cutscenes played fine.
Edit2: Must be prerendered cut scenes only. Any suggestions at all?
Edit3: Yep, only pre-rendered cutscenes. The end of S2 cutscene didn’t play, just a black screen, no audio, but it did have the subtitles playing. Do I have to redownload the entire client for this? Please someone respond.

But if you don’t need it, how are you at a disadvantage? There are millionaires out there right now driving Ferraris, yet I don’t feel like I’m living my life at a ‘disadvantage’.
That’s because Ferrari is not a really good car for city driving. Now, if they were moving in cars, and you had to walk…
(remember, you don’t need a car or any other form of communication to get from point A to point B – you can do it on your legs)
Your argument is not very valid. You’re comparing something to a total lack of something. I’m not comparing having a car to a complete lack of car, Im comparing having a perfectly useful car with a ‘better’ car (pick whatever you think is a better car, it doesnt actually matter).
Having super legendaries that take forever to get and that give an extra 5% stats isn’t going to make that huge of a difference. You won’t need it for anything. It’s just something to work towards. You won’t suddenly have elitist groups says “super legendaries only”, or if you do, who cares? I avoid those groups as it is, and they will always exist even in some hellish utopia where everyone has the exact same stats and skills. Options are always good.
Is ascended gear a problem? You only really need it for fractals, and even then you can get away with a few pieces. I don’t even do fractals, but I’m making mine anyway because its nice to have something I can actually work towards. You know, a goal. Everything else is low % random drops (dyes, precursors, tickets for skins etc)

But if you don’t need it, how are you at a disadvantage? There are millionaires out there right now driving Ferraris, yet I don’t feel like I’m living my life at a ‘disadvantage’. I can complete all the content of my life quite happily without feeling ‘forced’ to buy a mansion, sports car, trophy wife etc simply because they are available. I do enjoy the fact that I could eventually buy those things if I wanted. Options are always good.
I don’t think legendary should be much more powerful than normal weapons. If so, then players are forced to craft legendaries.
How are they forced? I don’t get it. Is it some obsessive compulsive thing? If the mere existence of something better automatically means you must have it regardless of actual need, then there sure must be a lot of disappointed people in the world.
I’d like to see an expansion every year until the whole map of Tyria is explorable. There is very little end game progression, so why not just keep adding content?
I really feel that Legendaries need to be more powerful. More stats, some type of specific power to that item( Ex. Thunderfury had 40%ish chance to proc 5 tornadoes that would attack closest targets, drawing a lot of threat), and overall more damage. IMO, a legendary should do more than 5% extra damage and stats.
No, they shouldn’t.
Wrong game. This game isn’t really about chasing better gear, forcing people to grind for better gear to stay competitive.
I don’t get this. How is having the option for better stats that you don’t need for any content in the game ‘forcing’ people? I don’t feel forced to get ascended or legendaries at all, they’re just something to work towards long term. I’d just like them to be worth the effort.
I don’t mind that they chose one climate type, as long as they get around to adding others in future expacs. Like Diovid said, they might add zones to the Maguuma wastes for some variety, but somehow I doubt we’ll get them in HoT, maybe in a living story update.
Regarding cities, I guess having an entire city zone would be too much given that Rata Sum is right there and is quite large. Maybe one map will be 50/50 city and land?
I’d like some vast maps too, but I think gw2 maps strike a great balance between size and content density. A lot of MMOs have big open areas that feel empty and are nothing but scenery (mostly to make mounts useful). That said, i would like to see some larger zones full of interesting landmarks, hidden areas, mini dungeons etc for me to really spend some time exploring. Maguuma could do that. I wouldn’t mind exploring a huge jungle for a while.
As for price, it don’t mind what they charge as long as the value is there. I like the game enough that this is an instant preorder, as long its not crazy expensive for the content.
I get the feeling that the new region will be smaller than any of the existing ones based on this interview. When directly asked how big the new region is, we get a spiel on how much depth there will be over size.
I think all we know for certain is that there will be maps, plural. Right? I sure hope so...
Also I’m not so big on the whole verticality thing. I think it’ll be fun for one of the maps, but not all of them. It tends to make areas very confusing for me having multiple layers as it is, and I’d rather see a nice big new region with several varied landscapes than one or two maps x 3 layers of the same map.
So, anyone care to speculate on how many/how big the new maps will be? I’d be disappointed with less than three, and three is already very small given that one of them will be a city of some sort, especially considering this expac is going to cost around $45. I’m mostly into RPGs for the exploration (hence my concern), so I really hope HoT is worthy of being called an expansion and doesn’t turn out to be glorified dlc.
I don’t care what they add, as long as it’s more stuff. Im surprised at the lack of stuff in the gem store, considering how much money is made from it. A tonne more skins and dyes would be nice. And please make it so we can toggle individual outfit pieces. Just make it so that the outfit adds a skin for each piece to the wardrobe. Imagine the combinations.
I think you could even use the previous legendary as a precursor, same with previous sets of gear if you did want to do some type of mild gear progression. I also liked the idea of really cool graphics on ascended gear, like a path of growth that followed you through the city, or something along those lines.
That’s actually what I meant. The old legendary becomes the precursor for the new. Since HoT will put precursors within reach of everyone, we’ll be seeing a lot more legendaries, and there are plenty around already. I’d like to see something done to make legendaries actually seem legendary again.
I agree with the OP, but the game just isn’t about progression, so legendaries will remain lame. My suggestion would be to have another level of legendary above the current ones, and put the effort into making those feel legendary with lore, amazing fx, slightly higher stats etc. Crafting would require some kind of time-gated mechanics rather than farming so that you can’t just buy the mats, maybe tied some personal quest line.
Under this system, it would personally take me years to get an uber-legendary, but at least I have something actually awesome and useful to work towards that doesn’t require mindlessly grinding dungeons for gold (once the new method for precursor acquisition drops).
And please don’t tell me to “go play wow”. It’s a fallacious argument. I paid for this game, I enjoy playing it, and I’d like to see it improved, hence why people offer suggestions.
Basing the economy of a game meant for casuals on the practises of nolifers who play 6+ hours a day, 7 days a week is a recipe for disaster. I don’t care if you play 24\7 and have a set of ascended for all combinations of race, class and sex with matching legendaries, that doesn’t represent the majority population.
The fact is, all forms of cloth are out of wack since there are no reliable ways to farm them. Damask makes the problem even more apparent. It make no sense that you need more CLOTH to make it, and that cloth wearers need even more damask for their ascended. Just add cloth nodes, or reduce the silk needed for damask and be done with it.
Then why wouldn’t you pad with leather and low quality cloth? Noones going to see that your gambeson stuffing is made out of damask.
Cloth nodes please, even if they are as rare as ori or ancient wood nodes. It makes no sense that you can’t harvest cloth in some way. The methods for getting low level cloth are wonky, and the amount of silk needed is ridiculous with no nodes and inconsistent with the other resources.
Also, why does heavy armour need more damask than leather? The same maybe, but more? It should use the least.
For the love of kittens, DO SOMETHING about this already. This is a game for casuals, right? I want my ascended set in the next three months, not six months to a year from now because I have to grind 10000 silk from random drops. “No grind” my butt.
Same problem. The link above give an error.
It amazes me how cheap some people can be about making a one time purchase on a game that has otherwise dished out free content for the past two years.
Oh yeah, all while being subscriptionless at the same time.
Even if I had no interests in playing the expansion, I would still purchase it just to give ArenaNet my support.
There’s going to be no huge separation of players, maybe just a few stragglers like yourself who can’t get mommy to give you her credit card number.
“Free” content. Have you looked at NCsoft sales figures for GW2 recently? They aren’t making 30mil per quarter on game sales alone. They aren’t a charity, they’re not giving anything away for free.
Calling the upcoming expansion a glorified content patch is justified given the lack of content revealed so far. I’m already mildly disappointed, which will only be compunded by how much the expac will end up costing. I’m thinking $10. I’m not saddened by the lack of a new race, level cap increase, new dungeons, or a new armour tier specifically, its just that by the time it launches it’ll have been nearly three years since release, and what they’ve announced is… lacking.
I’d be very disappointed and sad that an awesome mmo will only have a month or so left of play before I move on.
I couldn’t get the Fire watch event chain to start. Waited around a while, did neighbouring events but nothing happened so I just went to my usual spot where you can kill flame legion almost nonstop.
I don’t have the character slots to start a new char just to keep at low level so I can open champ bags, and even if I did I wouldn’t use a char just for that.
I believe you just buy cloth items of the appropriate level eg. Crab grabbing gloves from Bram Dawnrazer on the Bloodtide Coast for linen , combine them in the mystic forge so they become salvageable, and then salvage.
Can anyone suggest good event chains for wool and cotton?
Back to WoW you go!
Hahahahaaaaaaaaano.
Played WoW about 7 years ago. If it had better graphics and wasn’t like playing in a Disney theme park I WOULD “go back” to it.
I don’t get the whole “if they add new content imma stop playing y’all”. If you don’t want to grind the new gear, then don’t. Just sit back and wallow in your own crapulence at already having full ascended on all ALTs, five legendaries, thousands of gold. Just sit back and smirk knowingly that you’re better than everyone because you played from the start and won’t have to do anything further to stay at the top. I personally like change, and if I ever got to that situation I’d consider the game beat and stop playing. I think its better to have the option and choose not to do it than not have the option at all.

More tiers please. I need that carrot on a stick, or I’m just going to stop playing out of boredom. This is probably the biggest thing im looking forward to. A new goal to progress towards and make my character better. If I was happy with staying the same forever, id go play Diablo or something. Im playing an mmo for the epic loots and cool armour so I can slay monsters faster and get more epic loots. Im not playing dressup with dolls in a tree house here.
Maybe make it not such a PITA to craft for such a small gain. I think ascended should be cheaper as is, or better to reflect the serious time and effort put into making it.
While they’re at it, make sure to add more challenging content to go with the next armour tier. If they do all of this, then gosh darn it Anet, shut up and take my money!

I agree that cloth seems broken. Thick leather sections go for 9 copper apiece. Silk scraps go for 1 silver and 63 copper apiece. That’s 1800% of the price of the leather equivalent!!! Something is off. On top of that it takes three silk scraps to make one silk bolt, whereas it only takes two mithril ores to make one ingot. I’m constantly swimming in mithril and elder logs, and I can purchase stacks of thick leather for tens of silver, but I’m always out of silk. I wish that either the drop rate would get buffed or the recipe for silk bolts would drop down to two scraps apiece.
Silk isn’t so bad because at least you get a steady supply from the content you’ll be running most of the time at Max level. The reason I started this thread is because linen scraps currently go for FIVE+ SILVER EACH, which is just insane. Cotton is close at kitten , (thats supposed to say four point six silver, not sure why its censored) wool at 3.8s, while gossamer is practically worthless at 39c.
The prices reflect that there is a limited window while you’re levelling to get those low level cloths, while Max level gossamer is plentifuI. I think I read an old thread saying TA was a good source of linen because of the appropriately levelled nightmare court, but I gave it a run and got zero scraps from salvageables.
I’m going to try that iron marches event chain though. I’d been farming the flame legion in the very bottom left little area of the Iron Marches and managed to get 45 scraps in 30mins. That equals 2.25g at current prices which is all i could expect to get running the quickest dungeons in the same time. Thats just the linen though. I assume it would take a similar amount of time to get wool and cotton. I don’t want my epic adventuring experience to be 1.5 hours of farming low level mobs for scraps of cloth.
They could fix this by upping the droprate of salvageable from lower level mobs. I farmed those flame legion for 30mins and less that half of them dropped ANYTHING, and about half of those that did drop something dropped junk. I think I got over 70 broken claws.
Since anet hates farmers, maybe they should consider that increasing the supply will stop those gold farmers. Everyone wins.
(edited by Severino.3604)
I’m looking for some good spots to farm to get enough of the above for my daily damask crafting, and I mean specific locations on maps and the mobs that drop them. I know
you can MF it from karma items, but I don’t really want to blow my karma that took ages to get.
It really baffles me why apparently in Tyria, the most valuable and sought after materials known to man are wool, cotton and linen. More precious than mithril or platinum, silk or gossamer. The peasants are clothed in gossamer while the richest kings of Tyria go around in WOOL and COTTON. Ooooh, it feels so rough and valuable.
I feel like the droprate on all cloth needs to go up since there’s no reliable way of getting it except as a random drop, and the stupid anti-farming mechanics means you couldn’t farm it that well anyway. That sounds like a great idea. “The only way to get this material is by farming mobs over and over for hours, but we don’t like farming so let’s nerf the droprates to discourage people.” Seriously!?
I really feel sorry for tailors now. I can mine all the kitten ore I need, even the iron I need for deldrimor ingots without too much hassle, but linen? Nah, that kittens RARE as kitten. Mum doesn’t dare hang out the linen to dry for fear of some desperate tailor. Just picture it. “Here son. My most precious possession. My collection of cotton rags. Passed down from my father’s father’s father. Nearly 150 years worth of farming went into these four rags. Some day you will inherit all of it. Now help me move these stacks of mithril and gold bars out onto the curb. Its recycling day.”
I don’t have that much time to spend playing, and I don’t like the idea of just mindlessly grinding the gold and buying it off the tp because that only inflates the problem of ridiculous prices. What’s the solution? Is this just part of the experience? I thought GW2 wasn’t supposed to be grindy?
Having the armour classes is a throwback to the trinity that shouldn’t exist in this game. As others have said it makes no difference in a game where the monsters will just one shot you if you don’t dodge.
They should’ve done away with the traditional classes entirely instead of leaving a misleading shell of the holy trinity in place. From a realism standpoint, there’s no reason for warriors and guardians to wear heavy armour that provides no greater protection than cloth, but will slow you down and is far more costly (except no one can actually make cloth or leather for some reason, it just magically appears as scraps in bags. Nope, no sheep, cows or cotton plantations can make them). Everyone can dive and roll like a seasoned acrobat though, so why not just wear regular clothes for mobility?
This is what disappoints me about this game. The lack of a trinity really messes a lot of mechanics up (just look at the state of dungeons) and its hard for me to justify in my head why a full plate armoured warrior is no tougher than a cloth wearing elementalist (or why everyone went to clown college and majored in tumbling). They could’ve had the trinity AND dodging. I feel like they shouldve kept the trinity, or ditched it entirely and come up with new classes and gear from scratch and made a system that doesn’t feel shallow. I really feel like anet missed out on something epic purely to be different given how good the game is in its current state.
I’m hoping it’s paid. I’d rather pay good money for an awesome expansion than get a mediocre expansion for free or cheap. This is a game I’m willing to put hundreds of hours into after all. I’d definitely pay for the extra content. The people who don’t want to pay for a expac at all can still play the game for free as they’ve always done. What are they going to do? Say “well I don’t want to pay for new content, so I’m gonna stop playing and get zero content forever!” Besides, I think the people who provide revenue for Anet (the gem store users) will be the ones willing to pay the expac anyway.
+1 to the Leader system. Being kicked from your own party is the stupidest thing in existence, and I can’t think of other mmo’s that have this type of system. I’ve only been kicked once, but it made me think about how crappy the current system is.
The group I made was for experienced only, yet clearly not all were experienced. It was obvious after one guy completely botched a pull. I suggested a way it could be done better and he told me to get lost, he “did this dungeon all the time”, and was “sick of people telling him how to play”. I thought, “whoa, someone has some authority issues” since I merely offered suggestions for next time. Yet he keeps talking up how big he is, how many AP he has, all the fancy skins, so much that he doesn’t even take part in the next fight. He claims that he’s “oh, just clearing my inv”. In the middle of a fight… I vote to kick this kitten-bag since he’s just deadweight at this point, and then I get kicked… Couldn’t facepalm hard enough.
The system needs to change, but Anet is pretty sloppy on this kind of thing. I get the feeling that the big changes this game really needs to become great won’t happen because the money just isn’t available. Dungeons need a revamp, certain classes need a rework, crafted precursors, etc It’ll never happen. I’m hoping the money is going into a really great xpac or GW3 or something, because Anet has been sitting on their hands for too long.
Yes please, more emotes. I don’t care what they are, but there is a serious lack of them.
How long has the game been out now? Did the necromancer ever have a place in pve? I just wish my necro was good at something. I feel like I’m a second class citizen when looking for groups. I don’t care that they’re “OK” in pve when every other class can fill the same role but better. I’d like them to play more like the warlock from WoW, with dots etc
This is an old problem, and I’ve already done a google and forum search for an answer but can’t find anything.
The dialogue during cutscenes and scout dialogue on the world map are much louder than normal. Like twice as loud. So loud its painful and I reach for my volume knob every time a cut scene comes along. It’s really the only thing wrong with the otherwise excellent game, but it’s a pretty big one.
I’ve read that some people reported hearing the dialogue out of every speaker in their surround setup, but I only use 2.0 or headphones.
I’m hoping there’s an easy fix for this immersion breaking problem.
Managed to play all yesterday with good fps, now today it’s back to choppy land. Could it be something server side? I’ve also cleaned out all the slots with compressed air and a vacuum.
The few hours that I did play were very enjoyable though, it’s a great mmo, just wish it were more reliable.
Before I go to bed, just thought I’d update. I ran the ‘Render Test’ in GPU-Z as indicated by the ‘?’ next to Bus Interface, and it now shows as PCI-E 3.0×16 @ x16 1.1. Apparently it downclocks as a power saving feature.
Even if that was the issue, it doesn’t explain how I was getting decent fps before the patch.
Tomorrow I will check the slot and clean the contacts. Thanks once again for the help guys, really appreciate it.
Map is called Queensdale, there weren’t/aren’t many people around.
Bus Interface: PCI-E 3.0 × 16 @ 1 1.1
GPU runs at 800mhz, memory at 1250mhz max, average is about half those readings.
(edited by Severino.3604)
The fps is according to the settings menu in game, bottom right corner. The game is choppy enough to convince me that it’s accurate.
My average CPU usage for GW2.exe is 22%, according to resource monitor, and my GPU usage is at 100% according to GPU-Z.
As far as I know, GPU is running at default clocks. I haven’t done any overclocking with my rig.
I also tried deleting the Local.dat file, which had no effect.
Here are my specs, appreciate the help.
Windows 7 SP1
i7 860 @ 2.8ghz
Radeon HD7950 3gb
8gb RAM
After reading that link, my CPU is probably the bottleneck in my setup, but it still doesn’t explain why I had a solid 60fps this morning. That said, I won’t be getting a new mobo/CPU just to play this one game. Everything else I play runs smoothly on max settings.
I only started playing this morning and my fps was fine. Since the last patch, the game is unplayable for me, and I only just bought the thing…
Despite following instructions on the “Low fps” sticky, or even turning all my setting to lowest, I still only get 5-15fps.
To add insult to injury, the game dropped from $59.99 to $44.99 right after I bought the damn thing and I can’t even play it! Extremely peeved at the moment, and would appreciate any help from anyone. From what I’ve read, it’s a pretty common problem atm.
