Underwater combat

I’ve seen some people saying they hate fighting underwater. I disagree with them, in that I find the 3D environment to be a nice change of pace, and that while some skills need to be tweaked or changed, by and large underwater combat is fine as is, with 2 exceptions.

1) Underwater mobs are too tightly packed, with too high a spawn rate. I play a ranger, and it seems like every time my pet goes in to attack the creature I tell it to (closest creature to me, so it doesn’t pass through any mobs on the way to my target) it almost invariably ends up fighting against 2 additional mobs that have aggro’d on him due to proximity. By the time the combat with these three is finished, the first one is spawning again, and the eternal combat continues until i get downed. As I attempt to get to the surface, I almost always aggro at least another 2 creatures.

2) No skills on your bar when you hit the surface. Not even a ‘cough up 2L of water you’ve just inhaled’. Your bar increases fairly rapidly to recovery at this point, but aggro of a single creature is enough to offset this ‘recovery’. Water Boobing in PvP has also been brought up as an issue in other threads.

So: TL;DR
1) Too many mobs, too high spawn rate
Solution: Either increase the area between mobs, or decrease spawn rate, or a minor tweak to both.
2) Drowning state needs work
Solution: Make the skills when you’re ‘floating’ in the drowning state the same as either downed or drowning.

Vit Vs Tough for tankiness

Toughness seems to be a much better attr to build around, especially if you have a lot of the corruption skills, but at what point do you have ‘enough’ and should you maybe look at stacking Vit? Is a balance the best between the two, or is Tough just hands down better?

Ranger downed skills

I love the ranger. I love the game. But does anyone else think the ranger downed skills are really kittened compared to the other classes? I’ve been held off from killing other downed classes for almost a full minute before in PvP, but it seems like, whenever I go down in PvP (both WvW and sPvP), and even sometimes in PvE that the downed skills are useless unless you’ve got something with 50hp you can rally from before you’re executed yourself.

So I started a necro character, thinking it would be a fun class to try. Very different than the other classes, but I’m trying to figure out how to build him as I level. I was thinking a scepter/dagger combo seemed like the best, with a curse/blood magic build. I wasn’t a big fan of the staff for soloing (haven’t tried grouping yet). The dagger seems a little to in-your-face for my preference, the axe seems ok, but doesn’t seem to pull great weight and the warhorn’s abilities seem weak in terms of doing much of anything.

So, for those of you who have played to the mid-to-high levels so far, what insight can you provide? Or am I aiming myself towards the area that most necros have gone so far? Have you found any niche skills or traits that you don’t want to give up?

It seems like condition damage, toughness, vit and criticals are the most-to-least important things for a necro to build around.

There seems to be one major factor that people are forgetting when they put stuff up on the TP. You only get money for it when someone actually wants to buy it. If 3000 other people have listed the same item for 1c above vendor prices, it’s probably because nobody is interested in it, and it likely won’t sell for years. Just sit there on the TP and rot, while you get no money for it. If you’ve put up 100 items that you would have gotten 50c each for from a vendor, that’s half a gold that’s not in your pocket.

The items that do sell will eventually find a happy medium based on need. Crafted items of blue or green quality will likely only ever be made to level your craft, as a money sink. You won’t make money on those items, and have to accept that. The real money from crafting will come from the higher quality items that you have to go out of your way and put some effort into making.
