OKAY i got it now. The skill it GROUND targeted. so throw it at the ground where he is standing. targeting him doesn’t matter.

To ranger or not to ranger?

Shena Fu.5792

On a new account, I did use the boost on a ranger. because
1. i like the class. in my top 3 of most fun. so i don’t mind using him to complete high level content.
2. i want to start the masteries ASAP to get the glider and other tracks (e.g. pact mentor).
3. being 80, you can go almost anywhere. that means you can get the pets you want (with few exceptions). especially the HOT pets are in level 80 zones.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_DvBE7Vt7Vg

of course, in GW2 you can’t have a bow and shield in the same weapon set. but this is a chance to introduce a new concept to the game: a skill dependent on the other weapon set.

Condition ranger sb help

Shena Fu.5792

condi trapper’s main damage weapon set is axe/torch (with traps) and that’s all you really need. axe AA builds up might, so switching weapons isn’t mandatory.

some like me use the sb mainly for the swiftness boon when running around. although in pvp, the sb is great, as is the condi trapper overall.

I'm so tired of dying in solo play. :x

Shena Fu.5792

To survive in solo play, use illusions to distract the mobs. Hence I advise scepter which generates clones effortlessly while keeping your distance. Also take Deceptive Evasion trait if possible, to make a clone when you dodge.

Skilled staff will get you out of most situations. It’s great to assist others during boss fights and to tag mobs.

Mantra of Recovery heals you instantly, but requires some skill to use.

Asuras get access to two awesome skills. Radiation field and summon golem as elite. Former is a long lasting poison field to help kill faster via DoT and combos. Latter is a pet that distracts the mobs while dealing heavy damage, so stuff dies faster. Because we know mesmer is low DPS and needs all the help they can get.

if shortbow is inspired by music theme. then its attacks should pierce, preferably innately rather than via a trait. also some additional bleeding (cause enemies’ ears to bleed), but bleed is not main effect.

Mesmer Elite Spec Axe?

in Mesmer

Posted by: Shena Fu.5792

Shena Fu.5792

or we get a 2h weapon that’s strong damage and support. 2h prevents use of offhand, so it should be strong weapon on its own. say somewhere between GS and staff, but differently.

but the real issue, how do you replace the chronomancer in a group? a pure damage weapon would have to deal insane damage to compensate.

yeah probably via boons to allies with high up-time. also crowd control, in particular daze / stun with music distraction and maybe knockdown in the form of shock waves and sonic booms.

Best Class to explore GW2 content

in Players Helping Players

Posted by: Shena Fu.5792

Shena Fu.5792

Asura ranger will let you experience all content. Including unlocking all the pets across the world. Both power and condition ranger are viable. But the most fun build is condi trapper with axe/torch and shortbow. Axe and traps will kill multiple mobs fast. Shortbow for permanent swiftness, so you run around faster.

Asura is generally best for jumping puzzles due to their small stature. Although engineer rifle has a great skill for precise jumps (which is another good AoE class.)

Mesmers don’t need another off – hand weapon.

The case for shortbow is that it is new main hand weapon that looks like a harp or lyre. Which can be transformed into a musical instrument as mesmers perform attacks, just like necromancers transform staff into scythe.

New utilities could be illusionary musicians, in the same vein as ranger spirits or engineer turrets. Create stationary illusions that creates a wide combo field of various effects. Activating the same skill shatters them for secondary effect. They don’t count as your 3 illusions. (Or maybe they should?)

New to the game: Is Ranger a good pick?

in Ranger

Posted by: Shena Fu.5792

Shena Fu.5792

Greatsword and Longbow are really boring and attacks feel slow. They only have two special offensive attacks. So most of the time you just repeat the same 1 or 2 attacks and auto-attack until they reset.

Ranger LB is the most boring, uninspired weapon in the game (or any RPG really). Ironically, if you want a fun bow class, don’t choose a ranger. For example, thief shortbow is very fun and even useful for getting out of trouble. On top of that, it AOEs better than both of ranger’s bows.

OTOH Ranger Axe/Axe is very fast-paced weapon set that damages multiple enemies. Every skill deals great to excellent damage and can be used in every battle, even against trash mobs. It’s midrange weapon, so you can move between melee and range without the need to swap weapons or losing much damage output in the process.

Revenant Not In An Acceptable State:Weapons

in Revenant

Posted by: Shena Fu.5792

Shena Fu.5792

I’m new to Revenant. Only at level 17 and have unlocked all weapon skills. But I don’t feel any of the weapons are particularly fun or rewarding.

Mace and sword don’t do enough damage, so haven’t used them at all. So my weapon of choice is hammer. AOE is nice, but it’s so slow. Also having two skills require ground targeting is too awkward. Suggest to make Drop the Hammer just land at your target.

My other weapon is staff. Main reason is just for #5 to speed up travel a bit and animation kind of cool. Otherwise it’s okay, but doesn’t feel special.

[Guide] The Leveling & Open World Compendium

Shena Fu.5792

I disagree using greatsword for leveling & open world. Other weapons are still better in terms of damage and utility. Let’s compare the situations.

Trash mobs:
The overall fastest kill is from scepter/focus across all enemy types (light, medium, heavy). They get two attacks that are among the highest damage dealing for mesmers: Confusing Images and Phantasmal Warden. That means the scepter/focus mesmer does front-loaded burst right from the beginning.

Furthermore, the same two attacks stack conditions on top of the deadly direct damage. Confusing Images also causes confusion condition. Warden can cause heavy bleeds when traiting Phantasmal Fury and Sharper Images. Where Warden hits 12 times, which means more chances to land a critical hit, which causes more bleeds to proc. Bleed stacks with intensity, so the more you stack, the more damage per tick. At 20% critical chance, expect Warden to land 2.4 crits every time it’s summoned. Fortunately, they inherit precision from you. Thus you can further raise their crit chance with gear that raises your own precision. The result is a boatload of crit and bleed damage by the Warden.

Not only that, scepter auto attack creates an army of illusions with no effort. So you always have illusions for shattering.

Boss mobs:
For sustained damage and ally-friendly utility, the best options are again scepter/focus and staff. Mainly due to huge stacks of conditions of various types. Staff and focus can make fields for comboing that other players can exploit.

Survival:
Hands down the best weapon to keep yourself alive is staff. Which can get you out of almost any sticky situation.

Traveling:
Since you’ll be running a lot in the open world, Focus has run buff so you get to places faster. Even better if you make scepter/focus or sword/focus your main weapon set, so you don’t have to swap weapons that often.

Final verdict:
For leveling & open world, go with scepter/focus and staff. If you like sword, replacing scepter with 1-hand sword is also acceptable.

Please wipe names on dead accounts.

19 character limit, 27 characters = 27^19 = 1570042899082081611640534563 = 1 × 10 ^ 27 possible names.
10 million players with 10 million characters = 100000000000000 = 1 × 10 ^ 14

yea we’re not running out of names any time soon, or ever.

you could try to be even just a bit creative. say add a surname like Wannabe to your characters. Gandalf Wannabe, Legolas Wannabe, etc. they’re probably not taken yet. /shrug

Pyromaniac Forest Ranger (PVE)

Axe/Axe + Torch . Tons of conditions, fire fields, whirl and projectile finishers, traps, AOE.

Start with Splitblade and Throw Torch from a distance. When you get near the enemy, Bonfire or Flame Trap. Then switch to off-hand axe for whirl finisher. Axe #1, 2, and 4 for projectile finishers.

Maximize Condition Damage and Precision. i.e. Sinister, Rabid, Ravaging, Rampager.

i tested with dummies and real mobs. GS, sword, and axe all kill about the same speed (GS sometimes faster if crits land.) advantage for greatsword is less reliant on cooldowns, relying on mainly autoattack and maul, aka easymode. sword’s the worst choice. doesn’t cleave like GS or axe. serpent’s strike is annoying due to repositioning and not as good as axe’s splitblade (former has less damage and longer cooldown).

axe let’s you stay afar and hits multiple enemies even if they’re apart. splitblade’s bleeding is just as strong as GS crits—latter is less reliable/more variance even when traited for Remorseless – 2-handed training – Precise Strike. furthermore you need to max out two spec lines just to achieve. you need to be 45 to get second spec line. pre-45, better off with axe/axe + warhorn.

moreover axe provides conditions that help your group. axe also has advantage of range. against champions, you can kite while pet tanks with no loss of damage. most importantly is you feel in total control of the fight.

I’m only level 33. I find Axe/Axe + Warhorn the best DPS. Other weapons don’t offer as much damage.

Axe main hits multiple targets, so I don’t have to switch between single-target and multi-target weapons. Great thing axe is 900 range, so don’t have to switch between ranged and melee weapons. Basically Axe main is best of all worlds.

Axe off-hand grants more multi-target attacks and huge burst #5 to enemies around you. Warhorn #4 is also huge burst to a single target. Both are paired with the same main-hand Axe. Just swap off-hand weapons and wait for cooldowns to expire.

Shena Fu.5792

For PvE, I find Scepter/Focus + Staff the best overall. Also Mantra of Recovery is mandatory. For the ultimate survivor build.

Focus is hands down the best off-hand: multi-hit (extra procs, ie bleeds from trait), whirling finisher, protection, hits multiple enemies, high damage (albeit also high variance), speed buff, pull enemies (interrupts). All of which sums up to great survivability, great damage, and great utility.

Sword arguably kills faster than Scepter. However, I prefer to stay at range with near endless supply of illusions (including traits and utilities.)

Mantra of Recovery cannot be interrupted. That’s very key to survival. Under some circumstances, you can trait Harmonious Mantras for extra activation.

I started trying out Mantra of Recovery because I got frustrated getting my heals interrupted when I really needed it. Of course the healing part is great. OTOH the charging part is a bit annoying and seems like more micromanagement.

I have yet to try Mirror. Reflection is great for what I want—not get interrupted when I need that heal—but proportionally it doesn’t seem to heal as much as Ether Feast.
