Game 'Loses Track' of Character Temporarily

in Bugs: Game, Forum, Website

Silvr.7403

The game seems to be losing track of where I am and preventing me from using skills at seemingly random, occasional times. Logging out and logging back in normally fixes it.

This has been happening for several weeks at least. It isn’t bound to any one character or region. (I’ve had it happen on my Necro in Straits of Devastation, my Ranger in Sparkfly Fen and Brisban Wildlands, and my Dragonhunter in Mount Maelstrom.) It has happened in both highly populated and sparsely populated maps. I’m on Stormbluff Isle.

When this happens, I can see the chat window update as normal, and I can see other players and npcs move and actively react to each other (and to me). However, I can’t use chat, I can’t use any skills, I can’t do anything that would require hitting ‘f’, I can’t manage my inventory (but can pull up the inventory window)… basically, all I can do is move around until either I log out or (if this happens in the middle of a fight) an enemy kills me because I can neither heal myself nor fight back.

When I log back in, the game “misremembers” information about the character I was on, usually trying to drop me into a different map that I was in earlier before dropping me into the wrong part of the correct map (often near an edge of the map). While the problem is happening, the character selection screen will misstate the amount of map completion I have done on that character.

.

This latest time, I was going to try out my Dragonhunter at Megadestroyer. Ran down from LA to Bloodtide Coast (to gather some mats) before using a waypoint to get to Mount Maelstrom. Did an unrelated event, started helping with a pre-event, and then the problem hit. Couldn’t use any skills.

Logged out to the character selection screen, logged back in. Game tried to set me into Bloodtide Coast before dropping me at the Northern border of Mount Maelstrom, which I hadn’t been to any time recently.
I used a waypoint to get back to the volcano. Saw that the pre-event I’d been working on had completed, and that some of the tunnels still needed clearing. Jumped down and ran up a clear tunnel — but it was too clear. Even the non-Destroyer mobs were gone. I couldn’t use “Retreat!” to go any faster.

I got to the inside of the volcano, and even though mapchat was very active and I could see a commander tag on the mini map, I couldn’t see any other players. I tried firing my bow; nothing. Suddenly, something “invisible” started attacking me — no nameplate, no nothing. I couldn’t defend myself, so it crippled and killed me. I used the waypoint, and suddenly, I could see everyone and the game was only marking me as having been downed once instead of dying (no broken armor).

Then, I was kicked back to the character selection screen. Logged back in, game tried to set me in Bloodtide Coast again, got into Mount Maelstrom, waypointed, got to the volcano in time to start helping with pre-events again… and suddenly couldn’t use any skills again. I could see new Destroyers spawn, see other players run from spawn to spawn and kill them, see Destroyers try to attack back, see people talking in map chat… I just couldn’t do anything.

I gave up around then and took a closer look when I went back to the character selection screen. Even though I was by the volcano in Mount Maelstrom and have only one or two non-city maps left incomplete in Central Tyria on this character, the game thought I left this character in Bloodtide Coast and has 0% map complete. (I am not too concerned about this, because it usually fixes itself.)

I don’t know if this is a problem on my end or what, but it’s frustrating.

World Completion, Hoelbrak/Chantry of Secrets

I guess the Order of Whispers really likes me?

I got world completion on a character last night. The very last thing I needed was a POI in Hoelbrak, and when I got that, two chests and the world completion symbol showed up in the corner of the screen. The first chest was for Hoelbrak map completion, and world completion symbol… well, was for world completion.

However, the second chest didn’t belong. Despite the fact the last POI I got was the Wolf Hallow one, the reward in the second chest was labeled “Chantry of Secrets Map Completion” and was an experience-only reward.

This is the second character I’ve gotten world completion on (in case that makes a difference) and I don’t recall something like this happening the first time.

Molten Alliance still in North Nolan Hatchery

in Bugs: Game, Forum, Website

In short: I accidentally triggered a Molten Alliance attack a little over an hour ago. I’m assuming this isn’t intended behavior.

So, I was doing map completion in Diessa Plateau on my Level 80 Thief, and I decided to enter the North Nolan Hatchery instance and check things out there. Then I figured, while I was there, why not try out the Human elite racial skills and see how they work? (I hadn’t tried them before, I wanted to test them somewhere out of the way, and I figured being by myself in an instance with no enemies was pretty safe.) So I tried Reaper of Grenth while I was near the NPC Sithio Quicklash.

Suddenly, there was this strange object that appeared right next to me. It looked like four satellite dishes put together. I could attack it, so I did, and then these Molten Alliance enemies and some fiery portals appeared.

I didn’t start playing GW2 until after Scarlet’s defeat, so I missed all the Molten Alliance stuff and only get to hear bits about it from NPCs. Suddenly having to fight a bunch of Dredge and Flame Legion at once was startling. None of the friendly NPCs reacted.

A few other “satellite dishes” appeared soon after the first, and each time, destroying one summoned enemies; destroying the last summoned a regular enemy and a veteran. (If I left the “satellite dishes” alone, no enemies appeared, which gave me time to change skills – as seen in the screenshots.) There was dialogue attributed to a Molten Stalker, a Molten Ratnik, and a Molten Shadowblade, respectively. After destroying all the “satellite dishes” and enemies I saw, the portals remained. Using another elite skill did not trigger the appearance of more attackable objects or enemies.

I’m guessing this was an encounter available in this location during all that Molten Alliance stuff, but since that’s over and not replayable, I would think this encounter shouldn’t happen anymore.

Swapping Utility Skills

I also would appreciate being able to swap out my utility while it’s on cooldown – not that I mean I should be able to access my utility immediately as if it were off cooldown, but just allow it to swap and the cooldown to countdown like normal. Just a quality of life improvement.

Not sure I understand. Let’s say you have just used a utility skill with a 40 second cooldown and you want to switch to a skill with a 20 second cooldown. When you switch, how many seconds will it be? 20? That gives an advantage to people who switch right before a fight as the switcher only has to wait 20 seconds and the non switcher has to wait the full 40.

I took it to mean that they’d want to be able to switch skills during cooldown with the cooldown of the previous skill still in place, not reduce the cooldown by switching skills. Something like using a skill with a 40 second cooldown, switching to to a new skill with a 20 second cooldown about 5 seconds later, and still needing to wait the remaining 35 seconds from the cooldown already in place before it can be used (not suddenly counting down from 20).

Mystery cave constant knockdowns

I did it solo, Neughkanice, but I also did it at an earlier time; maybe that’s a factor, somehow.

I had those problems when trying to light the fires, too. The shields most often had no effect; even though I’d be shown in a bubble and having stability, I’d still get knocked down and have to start over lighting that part of the fire (or run off to try another spot).

I’m not so sure the mistiming of the shields and fire was unintentional, but it did add to the difficulty. Maybe it was meant to represent the NPCs being distracted?

I only managed to make real progress after I started completely ignoring Braham’s shields and going for just any fire-lighting-spots I could. It took a loooooooooong time to complete, but it was doable, at least.

I don’t know about anyone else, but I’d been having intermittent problems with lag, so maybe that’s a factor?

[Resolved] Knockdown + "Treasure Hunter"

That worked! Thanks. (I do think it’s weird that it has to be used, since most collection items are just “having,” right? But whatever works!)

I figured out what was going on with the knockdown, too. XD; I thought I’d put on one trait, when I’d really misclicked and put on another that moved me out of the way when knocked down.

tl;dr My bad! No issues here.

Same for me; I can’t filter equipment anymore. It’s very inconvenient.

Since the latest update, I’ve noticed that whenever an enemy uses a knockdown skill, I’ve been thrown several feet away in a random direction (in addition to being knocked down). It didn’t do that before. Is this intentional?

Also, isn’t Dessa’s Experimental Journal supposed to count toward the Treasure Hunter collection? I got it recently (before the latest patch), but the collection still doesn’t list me as having made any progress.

I can't move

Silvr.7403

Same for me. I’ve tried pouring the potion on nothing and dropping it, and I’ve tried turning, and I’ve tried dodging (my endurance stays the same), but nothing works. I have to relog to move again.

This isn’t the only heart recently gone wonky in Bloodtide Coast; I noticed that I couldn’t comfort diseased Quaggans on Grand Barrier Isle anymore, either. (At least that one’s still easy to complete even without being able to comfort.)

No Master Leatherworker in Sparkfly Fen?

You know, I was right in that crafting area the other night, too, and I also couldn’t find a master leatherworker. I thought it was just me being terrible at finding things!

Trouble at Fort Salma severely bugged

I had the same issue with Marjory and Kasmeer suddenly teleporting back to the wall during that part with the exploding minions. (I died and saw them on the run back, still yelling like they were still fighting.)
I’d like to know if that’s supposed to happen, since it seems to have happened to a number of people.

I don’t remember Kasmeer doing anything in the first place except running around and yelling until the suddenly-teleporting-to-the-wall thing — no protective bubbles other people have mentioned — which definitely seems to be an error.

I used to get this so often I couldn’t do much of anything on one character. When I looked over multiple threads back then, it seemed like 1) this error has been happening to different people for a long time now, and 2) there wasn’t any one, sure solution that worked for everyone.

It seems like the best some (or a lot of?) people can hope for is for it to resolve spontaneously, or for it to be bound to a specific area or character. :s

I had this issue really badly on one character starting in late May, but I was lucky in that it was only happening like that in Labyrinthine Cliffs (where I could take another character and not have this issue). Using -repair got me a little extra time before that error showed up every couple minutes again, back then, but not enough to make it worth it. Time of day never affected it as far as I recall.
Strangely, I used to get disconnected with the same error message when getting guild invites on another character, but that only lasted a short time.

I still have the issue — now on all of my characters — but there’s usually a long gap now, so I can actually play…

Like other people, I’ve used the same connection as someone else and been the only one with an issue. I often experience intense lag right before I’m disconnected with that error message.

It kept happening to me (starting maybe 15 hours ago), but -repair seems to have helped for now.
