Yes it is, if you removed the only really competent melee class in the game, this would degenerate into a shooting gallery (even more so than it already is), it would be CoD with out the first person camera and the cool guns.
I do agree with you to the fact of thieves being the, if not “really competent melee class” the only “true melee class” in the game. However, as the game evolved in pvp, going melee is in most cases, and for most classes, (especially the squishy casters) the only way to go. You wander why ele go DD? you ever play ele utilizing any other build? It’s a fail. Same with Necros; cast times are way to long as a caster, everyone just dusts off conditions now, and pets are mindless meat bait on a hook. What’s left? Dagger and/or Axe. Which is a shame because I’ve always played casters, but since pvp is all I do now, I am reduced to becoming a melee class myself.
Ok, in doing some research it seems the rotation is possible. I assume it went like this:
he opened with steal + FB + backstab which is 1/4 of a second = 11k damage…
Then double strike (instant) = 1400 damage… leading to Wild Strike, Lotus Strike ( no cast time, no cd). ..
Then Heartseeker (3 hits with Flame Blast proc again) = ~ 20k damage.
So the whole rotation based on cd of FB was 5 seconds. Maybe I lag poped for a second and didn’t notice it.
Which brings us back to the original question on post.. All this damage coming out of stealth just doesn’t seem fair. I’ve played NCSoft since they bought out L1, and they’ve always loved their daggers, but there should be a second of damage mitigation coming out of stealth.
Hello,
i see that u got hit by 2 flame blast(5 secs cd), so it took him more than 5 secs, or maybe just 5 or 6 seconds with you just standing there without moving.
So…yeah, u just didnt react pretty well there, it wasnt just oneshot and bye.
Sorry about my english.
No Ayzee, this all took place within about 3 second. I had no time to react. I don’t remember if I did or not honestly, but I use both Razer mouse and game pad and my skills are reaction now more then thought. That’s why it’s so odd to me. Unless there was a lag spike which I did not notice, all this took place within 3 seconds.
You went afk and died? I don’t see the problem.
if you weren’t afk you need to uninstall. He hit you with opening burst..followed by auto attacks..followed by 3 heartseekers…ran out of initiative and proceeded to do more auto attacks. this only happens if you are literally standing still afk. or … if you have absolutely no clue how to even move your character.
This exactly. Anyone whose played thief and looks at what he did to you would come to the logical conclusion that you had no idea what you were doing if he could land all those and you never hit him with a single thing during that time.
Lets not judge, I have 3 80s and rank 32 pvp, I’m not a noob. I couldn’t react. And how does Flame Blast work? Isn’t it an engineer’s skill with 6 second cd? How can it be used twice in such a short time?
necro vs thief is not the best setup for the necro. Anyway maybe you should take some defensive skills. Or maybe ask in the necro forum for a rotation in general against thiefs.
I am generally happy with my build, and can hold my own on most 1v1, it being a thief, ele or guardian. The post is not on building a rotation for a necro, even being a necro has nothing to do with the post. The question is, is so much stealth fair, especially when you have so much burst damage? Someone to pop on top of you and kill you within 3 seconds doesn’t seem fair. The post has raised another question as well. Is this rotation possible withing 3 seconds?
One does not simply get hit by a heartseeker 3 times in a row…
If this is the case, it’s some kind of cheat. I would like the opinion of other thieves in this case, or even a dev, to see if the rotation is indeed impossible within 3 seconds.
It is not random. When u know thief is around, put Well under your feet to stop the thief Bs you. If you see it too much of a problem to do, I fail to see the point of you winning, honestly.
The problem is I never saw him. Didn’t know he was there. Why would I spam aoe if I didn’t know he was around.
I am not familiar with the cd of the skills, i’ve never played a thief. This all took no more then 3 seconds. I was running up the ramp for the treb and he poped on top of me. I didn’t have a chance to react at all. Are you saying that the rotation of the skills is not possible? Los Vn was the only one attacking, the previous damage on the list was just before death on a previous encounter. If the rotation is indeed not possible within 3 seconds then he may be using a cheat?
Good point Luthan, but I don’t think anyone runs around randomly aoeing just in case a thief is around in stealth.
No, I was not afk. I was running towards their treb, and had no chance on dodging or other stuff. Was running and he spawned on top of me. Why would I even write a post if I were afk.
This is a screenshot of a 1v1 or should I say 0v1 as I never saw the thief coming. Now I’m a necro with a bit over 2k toughness and 29,600 hp. Never got a chance to hit back, and all this in a matter of about 2-3 seconds. How is this fair is pvp? Should so much burst damage be allowed right after stealth? Not to even mention when they blink out before they spike you.
I wanted to get your opinions of how you see spvp going after the latest patch.
Let me start off saying that my main is a necro, and it took me a while to configure a viable combo of traits/weapons etc.. in order to actually stay alive and be able to hold my own on 1v1 in spvp. And I did try everything. Conditions is just not there, when you have about every classes having conditions themselves, and some I might say even stronger per tic, and most classes able to dust themselves off anyway, scepter/con necro doesn’t measure up. Summener.. pff don’t get me started on those mindless idiots who just stare at you sucking their thumbs while you’re 10 secs into combat. Only damage dealing viable necro combo I came up with is axe-dagger/power/crit with rest on vitality and toughness. ( ~ 3,100 power/ 57% crit / ~2k toughness and 21k vitality). With this configuration I could hold my own with all players who know their characters ( 50-50) and down noobs easily.
After the patch I’m noticing that Guardians are just untouchable. Not only can I not dent them, they pack a mean punch. I’m rank 29 in pvp and noobs just steamroll me over. (I’ve seen Guardians hold their own against 3-4 and still come out alive). Warriors the same, get stunned and my 21k health drops like a rock. Rangers with pets and Eles, I’d be lucky to take out a noob. Mesmers have always been frustrating; they have to do something with that class. Most Necros I have no problem with.
It seems that the Devs wanted to create stand alone characters, each with heals, buffs, debuffs, dots etc.. in order to create parties easier, not having to worry about whether you have a buffer, tank, or healer. Noble Idea, but a tall order. If you go that way you have to eliminate distinctions in armor. Heavy, medium, and light, which have always been to distinguish the tanks (whom by the way were never DD’s), from the cloth glass canons (usually the damage dealers). So now we have a community of self standing characters, they gave dots to everyone, buffs and debuffs, self heals. And now they give more dps to tanks. If they’re using that formula, then give more toughness and vitality to squishes. All those light armor wearers that will suffer for all these changes… OHH wait, that’s the Ele’s and the Necros.. Well the Ele’s have a ton of shields and more dps then daggers now.. LOL.. yea I know I have an 80 Ele too. So I guess the poor necro will have to fumble about in his light armor, meaningless dots, mindless summons of rotting meat, playing around for a viable trait configuration just to stay alive again.
@Eagrimdark
I thought my original post was very clear. I never said I played MMO’s before L1, nor did I ever mention that the MMOs I was on were specifically PvP based. I merely tried to point out that in my 15 years or so playing MMOs, I’ve played my share of mages, necros, wizards, rangers, daggers, etc… therefore I am familiar with their basic traits and skills. ( yes most character traits/skills are very similar in all MMOs).
Again, nowhere in my original post was an opinion stated. The purpose of the post was to seek help on two specific issues I had in pvp.
I never said I played before L1, and I never said I picked MMOs based on their PvP value. Whether my decisions were terrible or not, they are what they are, and they were mine.
I did not intend this post to take the turn it did with you. I was hoping for clear, concise answers on the 2 issues at hand. This alone proves that instead of crying and raving, I’ve tried to find solutions through the forums from players with more experience and time invested. The fact that I am even responding to a troll like you, gives you validity and credibility you do not deserve. My original post did not state an opinion, yours did. If you don’t have anything constructive to add, learn to read first, stfu, and let legitimate players have their peace in here.
BTW, I was born after 1954 as well. If you want it spelled out; by “pulling my finger”, you would get the deserved responses to your raving post.
Oh wait… I feel another coming.. pull it again!
@ “EaGrimdarK” In writing this post I tried to be very simple, lucid, and to the point, without pointing fingers or crying about who’s op in the game or what the Dev’s have to do to fix whatever. In doing this I never expected a reply such as yours. Sorry my 15+ years experience in MMO’s is not up to par, or to your standards. And in response.. ( here.. pull my finger!)
There are a lot of incongruities in your original post, if you played 15+ years lol. Just wondering why you wouldnt have mentioned any one of the 5 major PvP mmo’s that were out before/around the time of L1, which were all vastly superior to every MMO you listed. And why would your PvP opinion be worth anything in the first place if you chose to play L1 over those MMO’s back in the day? That alone states that for the last 15 years you have made terrible decisions on which MMO’s to play. (Im especially curious as to why you didn’t mention any MMO’s you played before Lineage 1 since you said you’ve been playing longer than L1 has been out and almost every MMO out before L1 was PvP based, wouldnt you want to include that in your PvP credibility?)
So yeah, your pvp experience is by far not up to par. And no, I wont pull your finger because I was born after 1954.
I mainly play Necro. Reading up on the specs and some builds, I think I’ve come up with a nice build. Full Conditional Damage, septer/dagger and staff, with speed and heal as you dps. Haven’t tried WvW yet, but on spvp, the past couple of days, I’ve been getting very good solid results with it. Always mid to high ranks. It seems that in 1v1 I can bring down just about any class, other then thieves. Even mesmers are easier now after “Theplayboy”s suggestions. The classes in general seem very well balanced, maybe they just need to fine tune thieves a bit so that especially softies aren’t a 1.5 second wipeout under their blades.
@ “Sanis” Well.. I didn’t want this post to be a “cry me a river” kinda thing. I honestly wanted other players’ opinion on how they handle these issues in pvp.
@ “Theplayboy” Thanks for the suggestions, your pointers were very helpful; especially the targeting. In doing some research the last couple of days however, it does seem that a lot of people have a beef with thieves, their burst damage and nonstop stealth.

I have two problems with pvp. First off let me say that I’m not a noob, original L1 vet, L2, WarHammer, Rift, Aon, AoC… Did not get to play GW1, but then again GW2 by what I hear is a lot different. I’ve only been in the game a short time, so I do not yet know all the character play let alone all their abilities.
My first difficulty is all the replicates some characters throw at you. I can’t seem to target the right one, and being a softy I have no chance what so ever to survive half a dozen melee pounding on me while I’m running around trying to find the original. How do you fight back or even defend something like that. I’ve managed to stay up close to a minute and these guys keep spawning.
My second difficulty is the dagger builds that just stay under stealth. Invisible, pop up hits you twice before you get a chance to cast anything, then stealth.. follow you.. pop up again.. rinse and repeat. Any way I can fight or even survive this? At least Aon had a seed you could pop to detect stealth, and even one charge at least that I can remember had stealth eye skill. What can I do when I cant even see the enemy?
If anyone has any pointers please let me know. It’s getting kind of frustrating out there. And one more thing.. I’ve noticed cheats in pvp as well. Or at least what I think are cheats, like animation ridiculously fast on the final blow when the spike finishes you off. Like I said, I’m not familiar with all the characters and all the builds which makes it kind of hard in game to know who’s cheating or not.
If anyone has any pointers on these two issues thanks in advance.
