Arenanet response that server population is tied to accounts registered to that server:

https://forum-en.gw2archive.eu/forum/game/gw2/Server-Populations/first#post703192

It fluctuates because people switch server either very late, or very early.

This can’t be used as an argument because this is why overflow servers were made. If they are in place it shouldn’t matter how many dead accounts are on a server. Server pop should be directly related to players logged in concurrently not accounts.

This is Anets way to keep server pops balanced… it will go away…. the game is still new and the first year is always the roughest.

The overflow is map based, not server based.

You join the overflow if the map is full, not if the server’s concurrent connection has been reached.

Please read the official anet answer here:

https://forum-en.gw2archive.eu/forum/game/gw2/Server-Populations/first#post703192

Sorry but you’re wrong. The overflow system is for the map that is on that specific home server and activates when there is high concurrency in that map on that server. This is why if I play on JQ and you play on HoD we cannot play on the same map unless we are on overflow. The whole purpose of the overflow system was designed to compensate for high concurrency on a server.

The servers maximum population was set to preserve the player experience by ensuring there were enough players to play with but not too many to deplete system resources and cause lag/crashes/ etc. It doesn’t matter if the number of players on a server reaches it’s limit if only 20% (random number) of that population is playing concurrently. This is a conservative approach by Anet just in case 100% of the population of a server comes back at the same time (probably like this Friday). At any rate I am not saying Anet is wrong for that approach, but I do agree with the consensus here that it is hurting the game.

So to everyone please read and understand the entire post. This is a valid issue and 10 pages of debate slows down the process for the devs to fix it. If you don’t agree that is fine but at least get you’re facts straight before starting a debate.

Not trying to be a dick, just saying.

Thanks

Pretty sure you’re wrong here, yes it’s based on active players to send you into the overflow. However that has nothing to do with a server saying full.I’m on a full server and can log in and go about my merry way however,if I go to LA I’m sent to an overflow.

You know what’s really interesting here? It’s that I always go to overflow for 20-30 seconds and then can rejoin my own server.Hmmmnn, how can that be?If they’re always sending to overflow it kinda sounds like they may be trying to control the load in LA.Makes sense, does it not?

At this point there is no doubt that server pop is account based and not online based.I mean why are so many zones pretty empty on a full server? This includes LA as I’ve even went there and barely witnessed anyone…yet it was full!! Yea right!!

So, Guild Wars 2 has now gone to the top of the PC download charts once more, beating pre-orders for Tomb Raider, Far-Cry 3 and more (no pandas to be seen!).

Not bad for a game months after it’s release.

Also, not bad for the ‘dying’ game we hear so much about.

So congratulations Anet for creating a wonderful and successful game.

The game may not be perfect, it may be frustrating at times – but it is still a pleasure to play and I am looking forward to where Anet will take GW2 in the future.

MoP expansion sold more then GW2 did at launch. Not bad for a an 8 year old game against the “Second coming of MMO’s and the almighty GW2”.

From GW2 launch to now the number of people logging in has declined rapidly. And no one said the game was dying but there are plenty of servers where it is like a ghost town and if you go off of the “server status” then that says it all because those are about characters made on that server not people logged in.

Oh and a side note, if you played mmo for awhile you would know expansions don’t keep growing a lot once they are released. GW2 once they release an expansion will have the same thing. Sell a lot then drop off faster then the original game. MoP still sold more then GW2 which is funny.

you talking stupid things cuz i see you dont understnad anything the server status is not for caracters made if u go in the time when EU sleeps u will see all eu server low population or normal and then keep on rising

@Gele That’s because people xfer off during the day and then they open the server to allow people to xfer onto that same server and I would guess this occurs during the morning hrs. There are NA servers that always say full but actually are quite empty,I’ve been on a couple of them already.

The server stats are based on account’s,not people online.Playing all hrs of the day on a handful of servers you can see it big time.

I just clicked on the link in 1st sentence that says Guild Ward 2 and guess what,it’s not even in the top 10 for pc downloads.Looks like someone took a snapshot to try and prove a point. When was it actually tops?http://www.greenmangaming.com/pc-download/

When you click on Guild Wars 2 in sentence 1 it takes you to greenmangaming and as of now it’s not in top 10.
As of 9:00 pm est on friday 12/14/2012 Gw2 not even in top 10!

So where is all the people?

Server population is not players online at that time, it’s players registered to that server.

Yes, it’s full of accounts of people who aren’t playing.

doubt it

my friend just got the game and sat refreshing the server list for 15 minutes until SoS went from full to very heavy so he could roll on the server I’m on.

so it changes based on how many people are on at the moment. i doubt he was able to get on the server because people were moving OFF the server. . .and i doubt it was from people getting banned from the game entirely

It would be because someone xferred off that server.Took me 2 weeks to xfer to where I wanted and the server was full even at 4:00-5:00 am.

When the recruit a friend happened a few weekends back all servers were available and that’s when I xferred. My server has been full every time I checked since. It’s pretty obvious that it’s based on account’s and not people online, when I sit on a full server yet the online pop fluctuates highly throughout the day,yet always full.

Same thing happened in other recent mmo releases and there’s always a lot of denial in the forums when online pop drops, but it is what it is.
