New endpoints: achievements

Turned on a pair of new endpoints today:

The latter requires the new “progression” API key scope (sorry!).

We’ll be making some additions to the /v2/achievements output in the future — right now we’re missing details about collection achievements, rewards for all achievements (including AP), and the per-bit strings for getting better information about the player’s progress (e.g., which dungeons you’ve completed for dungeon master).

64-bit Client Beta FAQ

We’ve introduced a beta version of a 64-bit client for Guild Wars 2. Please review the following FAQ for more information:

What is the 64-bit client?
It is an alternative to the 32-bit client currently used to play the game. Aside from some technical details, the two are identical in functionality.

What does it mean that the client is 64-bit?
Modern computers generally have one of two types of processors: 32-bit, or 64-bit. 32-bit processors can only execute 32-bit applications, while 64-bit processors can execute both 32-bit and 64-bit applications. The fact that the client is 64-bit means that it is intended to be executed on 64-bit processors.

What are the benefits over the 32-bit client?
64-bit applications have a significantly higher limit on how much memory they are able to use compared to 32-bit applications. Due to this, the main benefit is significantly less “out of memory” crashes.

What are the requirements of using the 64-bit client?
Your computer needs to have a 64-bit processor, and your operating system must also be 64-bit. To find out whether you fulfill these requirements, please refer to Microsoft’s Knowledge Base. If you are using Windows 10 you may follow the steps for Windows 8, and replace the first step with simply clicking the search button in the task bar.
Please note that we do not support 64-bit Windows XP.

How do I get the 64-bit client?
Log in to account.arena.net and go to the Game Content page. Under “Other Clients” you will find a button that says “Windows 64-bit [Beta]”. Press that button and then follow the instructions in the next paragraph for installing the executable. Installing the 64-bit client is a manual process and is recommended only for people familiar with Windows folder management.

I already have the 32-bit client; will I have to completely download the game again?
No. The 64-bit client uses the same data as the 32-bit client. If you already have the game installed, you can follow these instructions to avoid needing to reinstall the game:

  • Download the 64-bit client.
  • Copy the downloaded program into your Guild Wars 2 game folder.
  • Update any shortcuts to the game to point to the new file instead.
This process will be automatic once we get out of beta.

Are the two clients mutually exclusive?
No. If you have both installed (or copied to the same folder as outlined in “I already have the 32-bit client; will I have to completely download the game again?”), you may launch either client as you see fit.

Does the 64-bit client only benefit players with more than 4 GB of system memory?
No. It is true that the 32-bit client in theory can access up to 4 GB of memory. In practice however this is almost never the case, due to gaps in the address space that slowly build up over time (known as fragmentation). Most players crashing today due to being “out of memory” are actually only using between 3 and 3.5 GB of their system memory.

In addition to this, modern operating systems use something known as “virtual memory” to extend the available memory beyond what the system has physically. The 64-bit client will allow you to benefit from the increased address space by making gaps largely irrelevant, and will allow the client to use more memory than it could otherwise rather than crashing.

Are there any performance differences between the 64-bit and 32-bit client?
There may be some very slight differences in favor of either client depending on your computer’s configuration. In the vast majority of cases it should be negligible.

Why is the 64-bit client using more memory than the 32-bit client?
Due to the technical differences between the two platforms the memory usage will never be directly comparable.

Is there a 64-bit Mac client?
Unfortunately, a 64-bit Mac client is not available at this time. We are hoping to be able to provide one in the future, but have no timeline to provide it.

You don’t add it up, its telling you to unlock that skill/trait and everything before it costs that much, ie if you click on “Glyph of Unity” it will cost you 250 HP from having put 0 HP into Druid. You also have to unlock it in order, going clockwise.

Menomonia is only used for headings. IIRC the game uses Tahoma for all non-heading text.

The game UI font actually looks more like Trebuchet MS ~10pt to me.

Trebuchet MS sounds accurate, I don’t have access to check right now. I always get those two confused.

The purpose of this thread was not for the lot of you to criticize Marmatt’s credentials as the WvW forum specialist. He created this thread to introduce himself and let you all know that he wants to do the best job he is capable in communicating what the people of this subforum deem important.

If you feel his WvW experience isn’t up to snuff to take on this responsibility, keep it to yourself. Instead, wait and see how he does, and if you still feel he isn’t good enough, maybe apply yourself when his stint is up instead of complaining about it.

He is more than his post count and in-game stats. Give him a chance and who knows, he might just surprise you.

Don't Release Updates in Prime Time

We don’t announce release times in advance, but historically it’s true that most have happened in the morning (Pacific time). The reasoning behind that is to allow the maximum number of developers (programmers, server team, network team, designers, etc.) to be available to monitor any situations that may arise. As you noted, a short-term issue did arise today, and because of the timeframe of the release, we had all hands on deck to correct the problem quite quickly.

And, as others pointed out, releasing on “off hours” in North America makes it “primetime” somewhere else.

Ok this might be unrelated but I really hate seeing it pop up so often these days.

Guild Wars 1 and Guild Wars 2 are not named after the idea of GvG. It has nothing to do with the pvp aspect of the game.

The name of the franchise is a reference to its old lore – a state of conflict which lead to certain events both before and during the first game. This state of conflict between the human factions of GW1 was called :

I’m not usually one to complain on forum but this is too much.
I can accept being chain killed by campers a few times but this has been going on for literally weeks now.

I’m doing ok on 1v1 but they always zerg me, chaining interrupts as soon as I respawn leaving me no chance of survival whatsoever. My playtime came down to only a couple of seconds every 2 minutes or so.

Please ANET do something to stop the abuse.

I think they aren’t taking it far enough! But I’m not just going to complain about it. Here’s my solution.

All those armor choices – even just the visual/style aspects – just think how overwhelming that must be to new players. So I say they should do away with the three armor types. One type is all we need. Not heavy, medium, and light – just armor. And everyone should have the same armor (of the same appearance and color) until at least level 80. This will stave off the inevitable confusion about why certain characters can’t wear certain armors.

Meanwhile, they should do away with dyes altogether. Just another mind-boggling mess evidently designed to cause consternation among new players. /e smh

And then when you get into all those different stat combos on armor and weapons – who came up with that? Holy quinquepedalian trail mix, Batman! How dreadfully confusing must that be to new players? I dare say it’s edging dangerously close to being actually frightening. They certainly don’t want to scare away new players!

And all those professions? Why so many? New players will look at that and say, “What? Elementalist? What’s that do? Engineer? Mesmer? What are those things? How am I supposed to know what I want to play!” So there should only be one profession, ideally capable of using only one weapon, with one set of stats, at least until level 80, and maybe even after that. As an added benefit, that should (theoretically) take care of any further balance issues.

So, anyway, there are some ideas to help give new players of GW2 the best new player experience ever! Hope it helps.

The table is a fable.

ArenaNet: As a new player...

These changes greatly dishearten me (bloody 40 character title limit e.e)

I am not an idiot, nor are the vast majority of MMO players. Basic skills on a skill bar do not overwhelm me or any other MMORPG player save for those playing an MMORPG (not GW2 itself) for the first time.

I do not need training wheels added to my basic levelling experience, not do I need my hand held through learning how to press 1-0 on my number bar.

What I do need is; better introductory explanations of advanced features like traits, crafting, living story, dungeons, events, WvW and COMBOS - possibly one of the most unique and interesting aspects of GW2 combat that has 0 acknowledgement within the game and no introduction or tutorial (rather than them just being “there” and having to ask my guild for details), a better directed levelling experience (where to go, what to do. now that I will need to wait 10 full levels to actually begin my story, this worsens the problem) and more reason to effectively learn my classes ins and outs.

This new experience seems to treat you like an idiot who can’t press number bar keys and seems to give progression a gated, “pat-on-the-head” mentality (awww, you hit level 4? There’s a good boy, have a skill). I enjoyed being able to unlock skills through the active use of a particular weapon, and also to be able to have all skills available at level 2 if desired. Now from what I understand, to gain access to my entire skill bar I need to be level 20? Absurd and silly.

This is my own, personal opinion, but it is also that of someone who bought your game a little over a week ago and who has very little experience with the game itself, thus I assume would qualify as the target audience of a “new” player.

Honestly, this hand-holding, casual mentality is insulting, causes gameplay to be frustrating and gated, rather than rewarding, and just kind of seems totally and utterly counter-intuitive to making the new player experience a “better” one

TL;DR: As a new player I don’t need my hand held and my head patted while I’m spoon-fed basic game features at a snail’s pace, I need clear, concise direction and knowledge regarding the advanced features of the game like traits, dungeons, crafting and WvW, which currently has little/no in-game tutelage and requires wiki research or pestering guild members to learn about properly.

Maxwell.7843 Expertly summarises my feelings here.

“GW2 was my fist mmorpg.
The game did feel overwhelming during the first hour or so, BUT not because I had a skill bar! To me the quantity of skills was never a problem, and I remember that when my character was low level I wished I had more utilities unlocked, to make the fights more interesting and varied.
What made the game overwhelming was the huge amount of stuff not covered by the tutorial, stuff that I could figure out only thanks to the wiki.
This update “dumbs down” things that for me were never difficult to grasp, while not addressing the things that actually need a Google search.
So, to me, the game now is actually less accessible: not only it still lacks a good and complete tutorial (that was what it needed in the first place), now leveling is a worse experience too.

Resident smug Englishman on the NA servers, just because.

Malevo.1806

I really wish they hadn’t beaten him. Seriously, now the metric for this is incredibly difficult not impossible to ANet. The thing is to the average open world zerg this is impossible.

It’s not just about getting out of a zerg mentality, it’s that several parts of this encounter are critical failure points.

1st: The turrets. 6 people essentially control your fate in phase 1. If they are not chain cleansing the zerg DPSing and buff the zerg DPSing.

2nd. His Mechanics render certain classes/builds useless. As a ranger I rely on my pet for a good portion of my damage. Too bad my pet gets 1-2 shot by Tequatl. People in Berserker’s gear have 2/3 of their stats being useless while DPSing him. Get Soldiers gear you say? Why should anyone have to spend 10-12g just to fight one boss when the chance of success does not hinge on that one person alone.

3rd. Coordination. They killed Tequatl by using communication from a program outside the game. Last time I checked, the game is supposed to be balanced around the content in the game, not 3rd party applications. Saying people need to use TS to communicate to beat content is bad content design. Just because this is a requirement for WoW does not mean it should be a requirement for open world content.

That’s enough of my rant, and I hope I get proven wrong by people banding together to uniformly defeat this epic encounter by the power of friendship and love! That’s not going to happen. The community is rapidly getting polarized and unless SOMETHING is done about polarizing the community you will get a content gradient in which certain servers are the servers to defeat the hard content, and other servers are ghost towns, just like WoW.
