Considering how much Anet loves their Sylvari, I heavily doubt they make Trahearne a villian, if they haven’t planned it anyway. He rather never shows up again in future expansions, to avoid annoying the players with him.

I wonder why the devs came up with the sylvari in the first place? Their “purpose” is about as contrived as it gets and worse yet they have an non-elven elf feel to them. Why not simply make elves if they wanted to? Its not like there aren’t other transplanted species in the world as it is.

It really sounds like a GM’s personally created and doted on race that got out of hand.

Is Tree-boy really the problem?

I have as much loathing for marshal tree-boy as anyone else on these boards, but lately I’ve been thinking he is just a symptom, the real problem is Anet.

Anet thought their story of building up your character only to pull a bait and switch was alright. Marshal Tree boy doesn’t exist in a vacuum, Anet’s entire story suddenly turns on your character in a clearly deliberate fashion. They MEANT for you to be the loyal lackey, that is what they had planned all along.

Wether “lackeyfying” your character was due to a lack of time, lack of cash, or even both is made largely irrelevant because they have yet to even acknowledge anything is wrong.

Its a little sad really, GW2 was my introduction to the lore and as far as I’m concerned lore stops the moment my mentor walks through the doorway to fight Zhaitan. For the rest of the “story” I’m forced to rely on headcanon.

………… I just think that people thinking that their hero should be the center of attention, when like I said before, this game is not about one individual, this is about all the races banding together to defeat the dragons and save their world, your personal story walks you through a path that leads to that goal and they keep telling you that, but apparently many people cannot see that.

I’m glad you liked it. I really am. Its good to know someone, somewhere is getting enjoyment out of it.

But while the game might be about getting everyone to work together for the common good (and how cliche is that? did Anet not get the memo that the Alliance and Horde are both sick of that very thing??), the “story” is not about that, its about T-boy and his personal errand boy/girl.

I got so sick of it I have yet to finish my personal story when before I couldn’t WAIT to see what happened next. Its clear we are meant to relate/admire/appreciate/want to follow T-boy but it failed. It failed HARD with most players and almost all saw it as a bait and switch.

Its funny the little things players can fixate on, but the disappointing turn the story took has soured the entire story experience for me. Maybe if more story was released that was of the quality of the pre T-boy stuff, that made me care again….. but who knows right? I somehow doubt we’ll see anything like that anytime soon. Anet needs a while to come up with a better way to troll the playerbase, something to upstage both T-boy and class balance…..

personal story is killing it for me (stuck with an Order?)

If you actually read my original post, in full, you’d understand that I’m not asking Anet to let all the characters live.

What? Tree-Boy not enough of an interesting, nuanced and deeply developped character for you?… MBUAHAHAHAHAH!!!

Why!?! (MAJOR Order of Whispers Spoiler: do NOT read if you have not done the lvl 50 quest)

Don’t worry.

I gets even worse so you’ll forget about him fast.

This is hilarious, tragic and 100% true.. all at the same time

I’d rather they ‘fix’ Trahearne in the future, instead of killing him off. Letting him die is such an easy thing to do, especially for Anet. …..

I’d rather they don’t. Kill him off and start again I’d say. I’d like my story back, not for his to try to un-sour me on the character.

I disagree that there was no way to include the earlier stages of your personal story into the later parts. They didn’t need to make your warband or Krewe an integral part but they could’ve shown up now and then to help out or just as part of the background, all tehy had to do was add some lines of text so you could talk to them before and after. Heck, it would’ve added to the ongoing world immersion and the characterization of NPCs you already had a link to.

Also, not sure why they would worry about continuity? They can call all PCs “Commander” and be done with it. We’re all Sheppard after all! Unless they really are destroying the personal story experience for a lot (most?) players in order set things up for secondary media like the books….surely they would know better than that? Most agree that very thing (outdated mechanics aside) is the biggest failing of WoW.

Trahearne: I personally find him to be probably worst character. :SPOILERS:

The character shouldn’t be the special snowflake savior of Tyria- but he/she really should be the focus around which the personal story revolves. That’s basic Game Mastering 101: the player(s) are always in the foreground, because it’s their story.

What worries me is that before Claw Island the personal story was great, Why the jarring change? We must remember this was produced, storyborded, voice acting dialog was written, etc… dozens of people at the very least. How is it no one caught that? In fact you are constantly reminded of how awesome Tree Boy is.. CONSTANTLY. Not because he did something amazing, but because other NPCs tell you he is. Why do that? why go out of the way to hammer it in you’re the lackey to a chosen one? If it wasn’t a story about my PC being the hero why sacrifice my mentor… its actually pointless.

One possibility for needing to taking down the PC is to preserve whatever story they’re writing for future books. They would need to mention a name instead of the generic “Commander” we all can be in-game. I find it hard to understand why they would gut the player’s experience to favor a published a book though. The main media of the universe IS the game, so why sacrifice an integral part of the game for that?

The other possibility I can think of is that it must have been someone high up in the company (probably someone very excited about Sylvari) that made the decision to ram Tree Boy down our throats… first born of a race born to save the planet… bleh. My “someone high up” theory is what worries me, if that is indeed the case then its unlikely we can expect any change in future content, and would in fact expect Tree Boy to be a permanent fixture in our story

@OP, at least it was still your story up to that point. Why couldn’t I throw Tree Boy at the Zombie hordes and saved Seiran??!!

Personally I was hoping for a Norn solution to killing a dragon. One on one, I rip that dragon’s head off.

Here’s looking at you Jormag.

I thought along similar lines, except it would be based on your order’s philosophy. The dragons would be defeated by:

1) An Arcane/Technological breakthru ( giant techno/arcane Railguns with anti dragon ammunition mounted on ariships or emplaced turrets comes to mind)

2) A proper Epic Battle

3) kill them while they sleep

Naturally with your PC being an integral part of it all.

But no; Sieran, an NPC i liked, got replaced with a boring and bland sylvari that I do not care for. Worse, as I’m advancing through the story I’m noticing its really HIS story and my PC is an “also there”. Seriously? The constant fawning that takes place in favor of Destiny’s Edge was a little agravating, but Tree-Boy takes it to new levels. That they are so enamored with their characters is not really a problem, what is a problem is the player’s “personal story” being used to move along the story of your pet characters. And that’s what it feels like.
