Hacking is going to happen on every server – pretty much every matchup thread has people complaining about hackers. We don’t really need to do callouts for it, because that just results in deleted posts and locked threads – report it and let Anet deal with it.

I am of the view that wvw (in its present form) is subject to a lot of very poor design choices, pretty much all of which have been discussed over and over again in this thread.

I have stated this numerous times and I’ll state it again: I really want to see Anet rethink how wvw works the way that they rethought how the basic gameplay and pve game for mmorpgs in GW2 works.

Right now, the game is a hand-me-down from dark age of camelot, with all the problems and anachronisms the mode had – and then some. There surely is a better way to do ‘mass scale pvp’ than this.

Glad everyone’s enjoying themselves this matchup. Let’s try to keep this as sporting as possible.

Last matchup maguuma had started out sporting with the two servers we were playing, but then there was some regrettable drama flying about regarding accusations of exploiting/hacking and so on. This resulted in several thread closures, deleted posts, etc.

Let’s try to keep that kind of stuff out of this thread and focus on the sporting battles we’re having. If someone is exploiting or hacking or doing something wrong ingame, that’s for Anet to handle via reports that you would make – dragging it here does nothing but breed bad blood between everyone. The overwhelming majority of maguuma players don’t want exploiters/hackers in the game any more than anyone else.

Also, while this game is structured in how the point tallies work to ‘reward’ servers that just have warm bodies in wvw when the other servers don’t and don’t care much about strategy – the three of us servers have been lucky enough to be matched up against fellow servers this week who actually have good tactics and strategy. If it were my choice, I’d like to freeze our current matchup and just reset the point tally weekly, honestly.

So that said, there’s no reason for any of us to harbor any hostility towards one another – beyond good-natured trash-talk and chest-thumping. Let’s all keep this civil and have fun while this matchup lasts.

Players should not be punished or unable to experience and view the same content as everyone else because they play at a different time.

I fail to see how player versus door is itself not a form of ‘punishment.’ Aren’t we playing this to fight other players over objectives? What’s fun about outnumbering your opponents because their time zones differ, and capping everything unopposed?

In a weird way, players who can only play during ‘nightcapping’ times are being ‘punished’ by being denied the enjoyable experience of fighting against evenly matched opponents – or in many cases, any opponents at all. This game needs some better structuring in how wvw works in fostering opponents to fight in battles. Nightcapping is not fun for anyone – especially the people doing the nightcapping.

I’m glad you’re all enjoying yourselves – we are too. I just wish our servers all had the same timezone coverage and participation so we could fight more directly more often. I don’t care what Anet says – nightcapping is boring and unfun for everyone, and I don’t see how letting it go untouched makes the game ‘fun’ for the players on servers who don’t get to fight anyone but a door.

I haven’t heard any screaming, just people who are bummed out from 8 weeks in a row of active night servers. The problem is exacerbated by mass guild transfers, and that’s where most peoples’ ‘anger’ (if it can be called that) is directed.

It gets very tiring is all I’m saying. In some cases literally as there are people who have tried staying up late to at least slow the nightcapping down. Nightcapping is one of those anachronisms from DAOC’s pvp model that really should have been addressed in a cleverly thought out manner – but Anet’s policy thus far has been hands-off. So we are stuck with an endgame pvp where when your opponent isn’t playing is the biggest factor. In other words, pvp where you win by engaging in lackluster pve.

I would love to fight my opponents, even if that means losing. Trouble is they often aren’t online when I am, depending on server matchups.

As an avid strategy gamer, I cringe every time someone in games like these refers to playing when your opponents are asleep due to time zone differences as a ‘strategy.’

Strategy is stuff like bluffing the enemy to get them to go to the wrong spot, and then taking a tower out from under their nose. Strategy is stuff like positioning siege to pin down the enemy at a choke point. Strategy is stuff like splitting a zerg in half using area denial, and then finishing off the divided halves.

Strategy is not playing player versus door when your opponent is asleep.

Imagine if sports games went this way. It would be ridiculous. Single teams kicking a ball into an unguarded goal unopposed by an enemy who is asleep during different hours.

Really though this is one of the (many) inherent anachronistic problems with the DAOC model of realm pvp though. Wvw is loads of fun for other reasons WHEN the armies are evenly matched. However, because this is 24/7 open realm pvp (rather than say, arranged battles where servers need to queue up their players for the match to start) it also means that when people aren’t playing is a factor.

It’s dumb, in my view – there are likely far better ways to do your ‘mass battle pvp’ that don’t involve when there’s no one online of the opposition to fight. I don’t like the idea of rewarding players in pvp for playing when there’s no opponents to fight, and nor should most other people in my opinion. The DAOC world-pvp model needs to be drastically gutted and re-thought from the inside out.

Spacedad, I know your heart is in the right place but — 9 of the last 30 posts have been from you, on page six alone one out of every 4 posts was from you. I don’t think you’re annoying the other servers with trash talk, you’re just sort of spamming a bit. I appreciate your efforts to promote Maguuma in general but it can get counter-productive if you’re overbearing. Take a breather, man!

I appreciate the serious feedback – I’m new to posting on the forums and feeling my way around here a little bit. I’ve actually manually deleted a few of my posts as I felt they pushed things too harshly – I want to push the envelope but I feel I need to discover the right ‘pace’ for accomplishing that. When one of my friends roams in wvw with his thief playing buddy, they will look for loners and because the period of time between when they find targets of opportunity is so drawn out, they will pop their thieves guild. They have even used this to scare off people who saw all the red names and though a larger group was heading their way.

I don’t know if that is what happened here but I will take your word for it. I could see a roaming 10man thief group being ridiculously mobile and effective.

I’m fully aware of that Spacedad, however that type of situation will only happen to Sea of Sorrows if they become number 1 in the US, and quite frankly I don’t see that happening any time soon. Tier 3 most likely, and maybe tier 2.

I would cross your fingers then, because you have no control over the behavior or whims of the server xfer-ers. Hopefully Anet will decide to lock down xfers so you guys can be stuck in a bracket more appropriate for your present population before that happens though.

Your server is winning handily against us – if your intention is to demonstrate the base hypocrisy of individual members of your server, so be it. However, I would advise maguuma members in this thread in the future to not feed the trolls. They do not represent or speak for the conduct and maturity level of the SoS server, nor do they understand the community of Maguuma. I also don’t think free transfers are the issue here. (though in some cases they do contribute)

I believe the fault lies in the base mechanics of WvW and in the lack of flexibility in the ranking system. Basically everything in the way WvW is designed, is stacked against losing teams and teams with less numbers. This is a fault in my eyes, the game mode should be something that is fun and enjoyable at any point in time, regardless of the scores and number of people you can field (of course there would have to be at least some lower limit on this). The ranking system should be being monitored by anet (or at least community reps) and adjusted accordingly. If they spent 30minutes a day reading forums they could of been able to tell from a week ago that this weeks matches were going to be mismatches. The whole reason for not starting directly at two week matches was to limit the damage of mismatches, yet now that they are happening due to an unforseen reason they are silent. I guess in the end they didn’t really care about it after all.

On a different note, there are next to no queues on SoS now the weekend is over. At least not on the times i’ve joined in.

Yeah the whole play mode suffers the anachronisms of the open-realm pvp model started by DAOC. It is a shame that Anet didn’t take the same forward-thinking approach to re-thinking how the equivalent of realm versus realm could be structured or work that they did with the pve game. Even the game engine itself feels like it wasn’t built for wvw.

Problems with nightcapping? That’s not the player’s fault. That was a design decision, and apparently an ill-conceived one.

We always do well when we have our most people on, and mid-day is usually around when we tend to get more people. Our growing euro crew converges with our NA crew is partly why.

As for ideas, we’re doing fine – we’ve already seen in the past few days some brilliant new commanders take charge. We actually are already using guerilla 5mans for various purposes as well. We even have sexy nicknames for them.

Free transfers are not an issue. if we were stuck with no transfers… dominant servers would keep on being dominant. wheres the fun in that? at least keep it interesting and moving. if you’re a proud server guy like me… learn to accept it. im not moving. in fact i moved from a winning server (ET) to SoS! just so i could be with an australian community. and im loving it here in SoS.
cant really do anything about it really. WvW is a 24/7 fight. know nightcapping is an issue but thats how it works. americans from an australian perspective are nightcappers too!

not trying in wvw is more of a tactical decision tbh. dont take it personally.

We’re aware that nightcapping is (or was) an issue for your server as well. Unfortunately, given how free transfers work, transferring NA guilds to your server is a ‘solution’ that winds up ruining the game further for even more people. All of the problems we’re seeing now come back to a combination of free server transfers and a matchmaking system that isn’t working at all yet. I would ideally have wanted your server where it was last week to have matched up with an appropriate oceanic-focused pair of servers. Just as we should be matched up with NA servers of roughly equivalent population. Instead a segment of the imploding Titan Alliance decided to move en masse (along with various joiner-ins) to your server, thereby ruining the present matchup for a week. This didn’t happen to just our matchup though – almost every tier is seeing similar circumstances. It’s a huge clusterkitten and it needs to be fixed for the benefit of the game’s long-term success, or we’re going to keep seeing this cycle.

One of the most fun incidents happened earlier today in our (Maguuma) borderlands. I was headed to the east supply camp to try and take something (not many were in and there was no official organization at the moment) when I run into a group of 3 SoS players slowly walking (auto-run off, in formation) up the road. I stopped and stared at them for a good 20 seconds while they slowly pimp-walked at me, trying to figure out what was going on. Once I figured they were players I figure what-the-kitten and attacked.

Long story short, I did manage to down 2 of them before dying (mostly from them being surprised I actually attacked). One of them messaged me later and we bantered a bit about the incident – very friendly and good natured. I have to give props to SoS for that, certainly made for a memorable occasion in a rather bleak period of WvW

I’m happy to see that there’s still golden moments like this in the middle of this kittenfest.

Fix your game, Anet. Please.

yeah, shame you guys lost to this group of bad players 2 times in a row. How unfortunate for you guys. also… you guys actually had defenders during our primetime. we barely saw FA last week. we always encountered GOON and RPH.

We’re only just recently starting to get people in during your primetime. (Which for us is like 4am in the morning. This is what I meant by ‘player versus door.’) They are in inferior numbers but they’re still able to do stuff like pull off a bluff to take your orb and reset a keep’s upgrades. We’re quite proud of them. A few new ones actually just moved over from your server no less.

yeah, commendable stuff really. but seriously? why so butthurt? is it cause you guys are coming last 2 times in a row against us?

we got people to fill in for YOUR primetime! yet you start being butthurt about it. you don’t see us making a fuss about your new recruits. at least they keep us occupied during our prime. you should thank our new server members for giving you something to do!

I don’t think you’re making the mental connection here. There are entire threads describing why free server transfers are an issue, and you can even have a look at some of the posts in this very thread that explain the problem in plain english for you.

We would be fine with facing tough opponents and still losing if we actually were matching their numbers when our members are on to play – you seem to think we’re asking for free victory on a silver platter. We’re not – we are asking for fun and challenging fights. Unfortunately right now the game is structured to keep us from having that – your own members even stated you aren’t trying, and it’s really showing, so we’re getting rather disappointed ourselves in spite of our growing tenacity in struggling against overwhelming numbers.

Also – last week was a lot of ‘cap everything during the day, then sos takes everything at night.’ For both us and the FA toughs we were up against. It wasn’t very fun for either of us, and both servers voiced complaint about it, explaining their reasoning why on this forum. I guess you didn’t care to listen?

Also it’s worth noting that FA players were also complaining of the ‘player versus door’ nonsense last week as well. It’s a universal problem and one that is linked to the issues with free server transfers and matchups being borked. Not really something worth bragging about.

Spacedad, we on SoS stopped trying after the first hours of the first day after it became evident this week would be ridiculous. Now we just do random stuff to entertain ourselves. The US players on right now are even letting things be capped so that they can retake them later for fun.

Oh we know. It’s pretty evident you did stop trying – like exceedingly so. I don’t think we’ve been up against this bad a group of players in the field in any previous matchup.

Also I would like to add – if Anet would like to try some radical new ideas for an alternative approach to wvw play and pace, I for one would be very happy to playtest.

My hope is that the present wvw scene and maps will be gradually ‘phased out’ as superior ideas and concepts take shape. I would like to see wvw play 3 years from now as being VERY different from how it is at the moment. Anet took a huge leap forward for their pve gameplay and the core mechanics of how the classes play – I would like to see them apply the same forward thinking in pioneering in re-thinking wvw.

Spacedad.2841

The entire structure of wvw is in need of severe fixing and reassessing from the ground up, in my view.

The game engine itself can’t even hardly handle it – the culling and invisible players turns the game into blind man’s bluff half the time. The game engine feels like it wasn’t built to handle this many players on this scale at all.

To top it off, based on the imagination at work in the pve side of things, the entire zones of wvw feel very vanilla and ‘been there done that.’ In pve we get awesome steampunk fortresses and mathe-magical asura tech and airships and stuff…what do we get in wvw? Dark age keeps and siege equipment, with the old ‘rams and doors and catapults and boiling oil’ routine. And even THAT doesn’t work as intended in the game engine, with players glitching through the door choke points, and siege on the opposite side of a door knocking down players, etc.

About the only thing in wvw that hints at the possibility of imaginative thinking-outside-the-box are the siege golems. Otherwise the mode barely even qualifies as vanilla in my view – it’s only a hint shy of just being flavorless.

I would be cool with more/smaller and more interesting maps and smaller player poplock counts in those maps. I would also love much more interesting tactical options in those maps. Let’s see more involvement with npc armies, and with options for guerilla warfare. Let’s see megaboss mobs that fight on behalf of each side, and clash together in the field with players supporting them. Let’s see asura factories churning out waves of npc mechanical monstrosities. Let’s see underwater bases and sea cavern routes. Let’s see steampunk charr gear-cannon-castles. C’mon, where’s the vision? The tactical possibilities alone are much more interesting based on the pve setting this is all coming from.

Welp, took a keep and orb with about 20 people and 30 minutes later the 50+ SoS zerg comes.

This sure has been a fun week.

That’s about all they can do, really. We’ve had more interesting opponents than these guys that’s for sure.

Predictable and easy to outmaneuver yet you’re losing by 170k points. are you trying to say maguuma doesn’t have the skills to predict and outmaneuver us?

Unlike you, we can’t poplock 4 zones or get good coverage 24/7. We’re doing pretty awesome in our borderlands though – which we have started to regularly poplock. Mostly out of spite for your server.

This game would be a lot more interesting if both us and dragonbrand could poplock 4 zones at once. Having to deal with two opponents that can match your numbers would exponentially even out the scores – from there it would come down to which server has superior tactics.

People here in SoS respected Maguuma, but now we’re just thinking you are all just sore losers complaining about the fact that many guilds saw potential in our server and decided to help fix our weakness. WvW is 24/7. nightcapping a problem? FIX IT. thats what we tried to do, and accomplished. Now our current goal is to be more structured and more organised. Our Guilds have been discussing various methods in doing so. Laugh all you want… we’ll try out hardest to prove you wrong.

Well we took your orb with 20 people last night – the sos zerg sent 50 to take it back of course, but that’s really all your server seems to be good at doing at the moment. We also keep smashing your zerg in the field thanks to our commanders bluffing you to go to the wrong spots and then splitting your numbers. It’s pretty hilarious and almost like clockwork.

This is the weirdest matchup. Watching SoS’s performance it hardly ever feels like we’re losing – the predictable zerging is generally pretty easy to outmaneuver. I feel like we’re up against an entire server of newbies at times. It’s a shame the entire server is being “rewarded” by bad players coming to it en masse.

I hope you guys know what you’re getting into in the higher tiers because the current strategic efforts don’t really cut it. Against servers that can match your timezone coverage, a zone locked down with bad players is as useless as an empty zone. Worse, actually, since you’re feeding the enemy badges.

All kidding aside, this game’s actual biggest problem to me is that the engine itself simply can’t handle the playmode of wvw. Putting aside the obvious problems with framerates on lower-end systems, practically every major battle of wvw becomes a game of blind man’s bluff. I’ve often taken to spamming the general area of where I think players are just to see if I hit anyone. Server transfers are a problem to be sure, but the rendering issues really quite frequently ruin the experience and strategy of this mode – we literally are changing our tactics to reflect how the rendering cap works, rather than structuring them around a well-designed playing field. I worry about this game’s long-term viability unless issues like this get very handily addressed.

Hell, this server is basically one giant guild at this point. The only purpose behind individual guilds at this point is to have several different channels to spam for more people.

The fact that he didn’t mention any of our commanders by name in his post (and this is a pretty significant part of our server) or any of the other pertinent details regarding our recent wvwing efforts demonstrates to me that he is clueless and just babbling about things he knows nothing about. PVE is even worse. It’s like ghost town. No one reads, no one responds, no one chats. The only chats u find are gold spammers. And the only players active are gold botting farmers who run 3-4 bots that run through waypoints like a train. Ridiculous.
I’m on Maguuma, and to see this thread, is a freaking joke.
Good one.
Feel free to join Maguuma. But you’ll laugh even harder than me when you walk into a ghost town.

Two points.

First of all – Who are you? I don’t recognize you from our wvw sessions, or our mumble chat roster. It is not difficult to see who is regulars in there. You made no remark about our commanders or our tactics, so it is evident to me that you do not participate in the core of our wvw community, and therefore are not fit to be a representative of the server.

Second of all – This is a thread in the wvw section of the official guild wars 2 forums. Which means it is a thread meant for wvw recruitment and wvw activity. Our prime focus is wvw community and wvw play. Complaining about pve is irrelevant to the purpose of this thread.

I don’t know what you mean to accomplish by badmouthing the wvw recruitment efforts of your own server since you apparently don’t have much of an interest in wvw judging from your post. If you want to come and see how lively things are, join wvw in mumble some time. Leave the ego and attitude at the door though or you will be muted and/or banned from voice chat very quickly otherwise. Have a nice day!

We also like to do funny character voice improv and dramatic readings of bad erotic fanfictions in mumble – if you find them bothersome just temporarily put our seasoned crew of Maguuma Comedy Players on mute for the session.

Many of our players are quite drunk during weekends when on mumble as well so bear this in mind.

5 day cooldown on WvWvW after a transfer

Make the server change cooldown a month. Charge money. And also – implement a free guesting system for pve-only with no restrictions.

Actually that guesting system might be abused by bots so would have to be carefully considered as well.

Yes, and we’re planning on that – at some point the matchups will settle down, free transfer will cease, and we will have a strong community that has weathered a very tough storm.

Spacedad, I would like to kindly as you to stop spreading misinformation regarding the interrelations of another server. I know what post you are talking about, it’s on guru, it is talking about a couple SoS commanders being uncooperative. Commanders that SoS themselves don’t even acknowledge. Thanks.

We only have a limited view of the scene in SoS, but [Goon] actually has players on the SoS server who aren’t a part of the maguuma community, and have been there since launch. (No these are not spies – this is just an extension of how large the community we of [Goon] originally came from.) I’m going partly by the things they have shared with me. If you would like to clarify anything that is incorrect please feel free to do so.

Maguuma community representative here:

Maguuma is not a server for everyone – it’s a server for people who want to commit to being a party of a real community.

We’re not looking for joiner-ins and we’re not looking for people who are going to be rude or belligerent to the native playerbase here. We’ve already seen several ‘winning’ servers whose communities have been wrecked by influxes of unwanted people. We don’t want to win by sacrificing our community spirit.

We’re looking for comrades and friends who will be with us through good times and bad. We have a blast together in wvw – and we want to build outwards from the solid group of very amiable and intelligent people who have crafted the coordination in our wvw scene.

Join maguuma if you’re looking for a real community server to call your home. If you feel you haven’t found that in your current server, you just may find that with us. If you’re an individual willing to put ego aside, learn and improve with us, coordinate with us, party down with us, fight overwhelming odds with us, win with us, lose with us, and build up great memories of your time in guild wars 2…come to us. Come to us and stay – because we’ll be your home in Guild Wars 2.

We’ll welcome you with open arms and raise a glass of dredge-transformation potion in your honor.

If these Dragonbrand transfers have taught us anything it is …. the fact they are just plain terrible no wonder we didn’t beat Blackgate. Been playing against Tsym, Atac, Nex all weekend while you have all 3 orbs are y’all are pretty disappointing in the pvp department, even with the oceanic presence you will never reach tier 1 and you will learn this shortly. Never had such a easy time killing 3orb 80’s till this week’s match up. Kinda nice to play versus people who were once on your server answers a lot of questions.

We feel your pain. Unfortunately at the present time, due to free server transfers, the game systems reward bad players for playing badly by unmooring themselves from any particular server and going over to lockdown pop zones in another winning server. The worst players are being rewarded by the present game systems while the ones with integrity who are trying to hone strategy and adapt to circumstances get ‘punished’ the most. Fortunately the satisfaction of crushing a zerg from a server of superior numbers via superior tactics proves to be quite satisfying and hilarious.

Unless SoS gets its act together strategy wise they’re going to get wrecked in the upper tiers from what I’ve seen. Strategy is virtually non-extant.

At least for maguuma this has been a referendum that player coverage does not translate to player skill. (A given.) So many badges earned today.

Good to see, i guess i read your post and quickly jumped on my horse to ride to SoS defence.

That’s fine. No reason why we can’t be good sportsmen. I think a lot of us (myself included) have been driven to hostility and knee-jerk anger because of present circumstances.

Bear in mind that while we SHOULD hold the fairweathers and cynical server-transferers in contempt (since ridicule and shame are the only weapons we have against such behavior at the moment) they are merely symptoms of a problem created by the structure of the game. The ball is in Anet’s court to fix this.

In my view we should actually be ‘allying’ somehow in regards to drawing attention to this problem. Not necessarily ingame (though the idea of a player strike is one possibility) but with regards to bringing Anet’s attention and solutions to this dire problem. Henge of denravi’s Titan Alliance already tried this, failed, and self-destructed as a result.

As for the players who cynically shift servers for selfish reasons; we will remember you, and enjoy crushing you in fair combat if and when this game begins to become more reasonable.
