That’s what I named my human warrior. In my native language, the word means brave or courageous. Kind of fitting for a warrior, no? I would have named him “Malakas”, which means “Strong” in my language, but I found out the word Malakas is kind of a bad word in greek :P

As a side note, I saw a human female named “Alison Wonderland”. Made me chuckle.

Sorry, but we currently have no plans to provide an option to disable the forum swear filter.

Then can we have an option to enable a kitten filter in-game?..

YES. Kitten filtering in-game would make reading map chat more entertaining lol.

I just found a solution to this problem.

I downloaded the latest beta driver for my video card. You can get it from here: http://support.amd.com/US/Pages/AMDSupportHub.aspx. Look for “Latest Beta Driver” under “Latest AMD Catalyst™ Drivers for Radeon™ HD 7000, HD 6000 and HD 5000 Series”.

I’ve tried pretty much everything and that’s the only thing that worked. Trying to update through AMD’s Catalyst Control Center and the Auto-detect tool from their website did NOT work. I also tried downloading the driver and manually installing it, that didn’t work either. I just get errors and the drivers won’t install. Only the beta driver worked.

Hope this helps.

Hey there, I have the same problem with my laptop. Dynamic shadows are not appearing for me either. Not only that, my character also seems to emit a kind of “light radius” that just eliminates all nearby shadows.

It also seems that this only happens with laptops that have Mobility Radeon HD cards. You mentioned that you have a Radeon HD 5650. I have a Radeon HD 5730. I’ve heard other people with a 5660 and a 6770 have this problem too.

There are already two other threads that go into detail about this issue:
https://forum-en.gw2archive.eu/forum/support/bugs/My-character-is-a-light-source-help
https://forum-en.gw2archive.eu/forum/support/tech/Shadows-Missing-Light-Radius

But so far no response from Arenanet. I wonder if they are even aware of this problem.

I remembering seeing (and loving) the dynamic shadows during the beta weekends, but ever since release, they’ve been missing. Maybe it’s not such a big deal but it’s really off-putting for me.

This issue has been discussed under “Game Bugs” (https://forum-en.gw2archive.eu/forum/support/bugs/My-character-is-a-light-source-help/first#post82092), but I feel it’s more appropriate to post this here, under Tech Support, because it seems it’s not so much an issue with the game itself as it is an issue with specific graphics cards.

The problem is regarding shadows. First of all, there are no dynamic shadows anywhere. During the BWE’s, I remember seeing the moving shadows of pretty much everything from leaves to windmills. Since release though, I have seen none of these. All the shadows I see are still and bland, even when set to Ultra.

There’s also a sort of light radius that my character emits when I set the shadows option to Medium (or higher). It overrides ALL shadows nearby. When I’m walking, I see shadows disappearing as I get closer to them. Although this light radius doesn’t appear when shadows are set to low, I’ve noticed that the higher I set the shadows option, the bigger the light radius. Here are some screenshots.

Low:
Med:
High:
Ultra:

Notice that on Ultra, the light radius the character emits is so big, you barely see any shadows anymore.

In the previous thread, the only people who reported to have this same problem are those who have laptops with Mobility Radeon HD cards. Maybe that’ll help narrow down the issue somehow, I don’t know. Mine is a Mobility Radeon HD 5730.

I have tried updating my drivers, and even rolling back and re-installing them to no avail. I hope Arenanet or AMD or anyone finds a way to fix this. Fingers crossed.

@DashinSixes

Was it an automatic update, or did you have to search for the update manually?

This might sound like a weird question, but… If you look carefully, does it seem like your character is emitting a sort of light radius that eliminates nearby shadows?

Like what’s being described here in this thread?

I think that might be the most sensible explanation. Fingers crossed that Arenanet will fix this issue (if they’re aware of it, lol).

@Eroberry

Yeah those images are just plain creepy. This issue needs to be fixed, it’s turning people away from Sylvari characters, which is a shame, because IMO the Sylvari are one of the more interestingly designed races.

@SaraAlmeida

I think it is an issue with the face AND the irises. Like you said, I only noticed this happening on this particular face, but I also noticed that bigger irises WON’T cause this problem. Proof:

That’s the same face we’re talking about, but it looks fine because of the big irises. I only got the weird eye bug when I decreased the iris size.

I had the same problem creating my Sylvari ranger. The first time I saw those eyes on my character, it scared me.

From what I’ve noticed it only happens with smaller pupils. I made a Sylvari character and opted not to adjust the default pupil size at all and it ended up fine. But I really wanted those smaller pupils… /sad

I have this same issue. Playing on a laptop with Mobility Radeon HD 5730, and my character also emits this bright light.

From what I’ve noticed, the higher I set the “shadows” on the graphics options, the bigger the light radius. Here are four screenshots I took, showing the shadow settings (low to ultra) and the effect it makes.

Low:
Med:
High:
Ultra:

So, essentially, the higher I set the shadows, the less shadows I get. With shadows on Ultra, the light radius my character emits is so big I barely see shadows anymore.
