Hi Guild Wars Team!

Was just wondering, do you have concept art for Trahearne? I was looking through the concept art page, but I didn’t find any. If you do, I would love to see it.

I would love to have a mini Trahearne! I’d rather have the real him, but it’s better than nothing, no honor, no memorial, no memory. I’d rather have something to hold on to.

Although I was sad to see Trahearne go, he did go out like a champ: he not only resisted Mordremoth as long as he did (while being linked to the dragon more intimately than any other prisoner, which shows tremendous willpower on his part to not succumb to the dragon sooner at the very heart of its domain) and thus surpassed even the sylvari Pact Commander who was close to succumbing in the final mission, but he also used that access point to let us enter the Dream to confront the dragon and, ultimately, have a clear enough mind to ask us to end him so Mordremoth could be defeated once and for all.

I do hope we get a proper memorial for him at some point in future storyline(s) as he deserves a proper sendoff in the minds of Tyrians for the roles he played in campaigns against two Elder Dragons as well as being the first sylvari Firstborn, which puts him on a pedestal as far as sylvari as a whole are concerned.

Well said; I could not have put it any better way.

Honestly I was more upset about Scruffy sacrificing himself to open a door…

Scruffy was a significant sacrifice for Taimi to make. He was her own work that she built to overcome her physical weakness, and losing that doubly hurt, especially when she was still stuck in hostile territory. Also, we’ve seen Taimi vulnerable before (an extra fist-shake to Phlunt, grr), and I think many of us were very reluctant to see her in that position again.

I was disgusted by that scene. That scene implied, more than any other, that Scruffy was a sentient being. When he paused, he demonstrated that he wasn’t just a robot she controlled. He exhibited independent thought, he exhibited caring. And he was killed to open a door. That was the most callous scene I’ve seen in the game. I felt more humanity from Scruffy than Treh or Eir. [/rant]

EDIT: I’m assuming he exhibited caring, because that’s what the scene wants us to think. For all I know, he could have been thinking, “What the kitten?!? I don’t want to die! Curse you Taimi.” Still a sentient being either way.

One possibility: back in the 60s, DC comics introduced the Metal Men, sentient robot heroes that would get destroyed in pretty much every issue, but their creator, Doc Magnus, would salvage their ‘responsometers’ and rebuild them, and they’d carry on like it was nothing, good as new each time, without any loss of memory or function.

Maybe Scruffy is not dissimilar to them, in that he has some virtually indestructible component which houses his mind/soul/heart/what have you, so Taimi can keep rebuilding his physical body again and again, perhaps each time making him stronger, faster, better than he was before…

I hope so. He’s a likeable character, even though (or maybe because) he says nothing.

Yeah, that really was a sad scene. I liked Scruffy as well and hope he can come back – for Taimi’s sake too.

Honestly I was more upset about Scruffy sacrificing himself to open a door than either Trehearne or Eir dying. I mean when he paused then Taimi told him she would be ok and briefly touched him, man right in the feels.

I didn’t hate Trehearne or Eir but I never felt connected to them either even when I was playing my Norn or Sylvari heroes. Taimi and Scruffy though are just a special team no matter who you are

Trehearne annoyed a lot of us into not caring. Pretty sure there were cheers from some when he died.
Eir’s death was just too sudden and lame. It shamed way Norn are perceived in lore. She got fridged so Braham would have something to do beyond being the dumb, male lump on the party.

I totally get how you could feel more of a loss for one character than another; I mean, that happened to me. Of course, everyone bonded with someone different, because everyone is different. Again, to each his own.

Coming soon to a Living Story near you…

The following preview has been approved for ALL audiences.

Living Story 4: The Search for Trahearne

Marjory: Say, Rytlock, have you noticed how <character name>, my rock, as it were, has been mumbling about climbing the limbs of the Pale Tree?

Rytlock: Yeah. And when I saved the Pact leaders from that centaur army the other day all by myself, they gave <character name> a medal for it. (growl) I don’t have time for this.

Kimberly (passing by): Ain’t nobody got time for that!

<Character name>: Oh, hey Rytlock. Is that a splinter in your pore?

Rytlock: Hah?

<Character name>: I thought I sore a splinter in your pore. I was going to offer to extract it using an ages old technique perfected in Orr, like, ages ago, or whatever, when So and So Whatshisname was King and the realm was suffering from a surfeit of feral pomegranates blah blah blah…

Marjory and Rytlock: This won’t end well.

Later…

Pale Tree: While you were in the Dream battling Mordremoth, Trahearne planted his síolanam — the seed of his soul, more or less — in this one’s mind. All that he was is contained within. Bring me Trahearne’s heartwood, and he can be restored.

Braham: What about <character name>? Marjory’s rock?

Pale Tree: Who? Oh, the síolanam vessel. There may be some slight crossover contamination, but don’t worry, it will wear off soon and Trahearne will be just fine.

<Character name>: You take point.

Love it. You should write it. Like, in a book.

I loved his voice. It was deep, calm, and soothing amidst the chaos, calamity, and death in the struggle. He was somewhat of a salve, yet a beacon of hope for Tyria – and for me.

I was somewhat weirded-out by the whole Eir deal during LWS3.

Like… Trahearne was 100x more important than Eir during both the main story and HoT, yet we hear like one line of dialogue about Trahearne, yet have a whole mission dedicated to remembering Eir.

I’ll admit she was a large part of the Norn personal story, but for every other race it just doesn’t make any sense.

I agree. I miss her too, but Trahearne was far more integral – and close to me.

…. Relax. Trahearne is fine. Must be some sort of silly rumor. I just finished the Bloodstone Fen stuff and I got a message to meet him at Fort Trinity. I’ll talk with him about it then.

I am still trying to figure out how to tell Logan that Queen Jennah was actually a Veteran Risen Mesmer and that I had to put her down. He’ll be sad.

There are no words to describe how utterly confused I am right now XD Good job on that.

Im not knocking his role, it had its place, but there is no way he was the reason for EVERYTHING being saved as people are making it out to look like.

You’re completely right; it was a team effort to kill Mordremoth. The point I’m making is that without Trahearne, we wouldn’t have defeated the jungle dragon, and we needed him as marshal of the Pact to kill Zhaitan. He wasn’t given the honor he deserved; whether people liked him or not, he was the marshal, and he did a darned good job of it.

Trahearne was my friend. I felt more close to him than I felt to Eir. Now, I don’t really know why ANet made me to say that I will greatly miss her*. It’s sad she died but I am more sad over Trahearne’s death than hers.

*Better yet, I know but I disagree: It was a trick to force a false sympathy and future friendship for Braham. Sorry, but Rytlok and Canach are far more interesting characters than Braham.

I’m the same with you on Trahearne. For the rest, to each his own, but yes, I felt the same way about Eir. I loved Eir too, as a mentor, looked up to her, but Trahearne I loved as the closest of friends. I felt as if we had an understanding.

But I’m not about to bash the rest of the remaining Pact or Destiny’s Edge. I’ve still a loyalty to them. But ultimately, I fight for Trahearne, as I always have.

I’m fine with this, I don’t mind being subsumed into the story as a mechanic so I can see it advance without being the hero. Which might be why I have never felt upstaged by Trahearne. I also appreciate calm rationality so he never felt unemotional to me, just cool and collected. I didn’t want him to die and it seemed obvious to me he was ended as he was to please the anti-Trahearne voices while letting him at least make the heroic choice to accept death rather than life at the cost of the world. But why do the people who vehemently feel Trahearne was a dull stick who got all the credit not kvetch about us turning into Faren’s fighting skill in Bongo’s Hideaway?

Thank you! These are my sentiments exactly.

To add on to that, I think we also need to realize (did I say this earlier? I don’t know. No harm in saying it twice) is that we ARE part of a larger picture. Tyria is not just about us; there are other heroes in the world (as Trahearne was), and we have to remember that victory is not won by one person alone; it is won by many who work together with a common goal. So no, we can’t just take all the credit. That’s unrealistic, and I think this game does strive for a lot of reality in its story.

It’s possible..just mystifying. Personally, I would wonder how you could mourn the death of such a poorly written, universally panned character in a game which is heavily criticised for misteps in characterisation and story. It’s hardly Sophie’s Choice now is it?

No, it’s not Sophie’s Choice. But I mourn who I mourn because of who I get attached to, see? I formed a bond with Trahearne, as did many others. That’s “how” I can mourn his death.

You know, despite his unpopularity to some people (myself included), it’s kinda weird that he didn’t get a send off.

We visited Eir’s funeral, but trahearne got nothing. I can understand it not being a sylvarie tradition, but the pact would’ve done something I thought

I literally passed this post when I posted mine; sorry! I just posted something about this. I think he should have gotten something too, at least a few words said in his honor. Each race, depending on what the player was, could have done something unique to his or her culture. As a Norn, I would have told his legend, regardless that he was a sylvari. Our friends are our friends, our leaders are our leaders, and we honor them no matter what.

It’s not like his death was anything to bark about as the Sylvari did commit treeson. Fortunately Mordremoth’s death was a releaf for everyone.

Not something to bark about? The marshal of the Pact was killed. And about the Sylvari committing “treeson,” did you miss the part about Mordremoth taking over their minds? The weak were vulnerable to his power; and you must remember that it wasn’t just Sylvari who heard his call. It was every race. And the final thing you must remember is that Trahearne, even in the end, had strength; could you have opened a path into the jungle dragon’s mind while it had its roots in your body and mind?

Trahearne was our Marshal, and he deserves that respect at least. I’m just miffed that even ANET didn’t give him honor in-game. We mourned for Eir, carved her a statue, which she thoroughly deserved. But Trahearne? The marshal got nothing, just a mention of his death.

In before there’s a Trahearne/Commander Legendary stance with the next expansion.

Hm, and he gets a skill called “This won’t end.” It’s a Well skill. :P

He served his purpose for the old story. Personally glad he’s gone, because I’m hoping for something more mood-congruous to take his place.

Yes, but you have to remember that the old story determines the new.

As a living being, there would be nothing to keep him from coming back, IF he could find a portal that would lead him back to the correct world.

(Fun side fact: We’re fighting other worlds, maybe even other versions of Tyria, in WvW. There’s nothing to say that the Rytlock that we get back is OUR Rytlock. He could be from “Tyria 2”, and when we find out we have to go find our Rytlock, which unleashes a Zhaitan from another world onto all Tyrias, creating a Crisis on Infinite Tyrias.)

So, it might be possible? And is there an expansion out that’s after this? I mean, is there a time that’s coming up? Sorry, I have no idea how to word that.

And to the Trahearne haters, just know that he awakened as he was; he couldn’t help that his purpose was to cleanse Orr, or that he was to become Marshal of the Pact. The Pale Tree chose him; therefore, he was. He served Tyria selflessly and sacrificed himself countless times, even at the end, when Mordremoth had him in his claws and had planted a seed in his mind. Trahearne, “strong as iron,” was the answer to killing a stinking dragon! Without him, we may never have entered Mordremoth’s mind to exterminate him.

I do understand where you’re coming from, though. I know it can be frustrating that he took a lot of the credit. But each of us has a part to play, and that was his part.

So…

About Trahearne.

I’ve just completed the latest part of Heart of Thorns, where we defeat Mordremoth but have to kill Trahearne. I am actually mourning him (is that possible?). And I’m also thinking, what if he can come back? I mean, Rytlock figured out how to come back from the Mists, and he’s just a Charr warrior. If anyone can figure it out, it’s Trahearne, the necromancer-scholar.

(Check me on that: Rytlock did die, right? I actually never did those story chapters, so I never saw him die for sure.)

So, what do you think? Is it possible that Trahearne could come back in future updates?
