I believe it should be WvW with 2 servers against each other, far to easy for unsportsmanlike behaviour in a tournament. Yet I see nothing will be done about it. I love a good competitive environment, I am not scared of putting myself in there but this is not fun or gaming, but Balanced to much in favour of countries that have servers unique to them.
The problem with 1 vs 1 is that it’s inherently much more static than a three-way free for all. You have a stronger server, a weaker server, and that’s it. Nothing is going to change during the whole matchup.
In theory having 3 servers allows for shifting alliances which should keep whoever is ahead from becoming a runaway leader. Unfortunately in GW2’s WvW the scoring system is so badly designed that not even a possible 2 vs 1 can save it.
While I agree 2 servers would become too static, Alliances should be between guilds, oh how I wish we could Alliance again like in GW1 with a chat function like before. As it stands Desolation has really improved it’s efforts to work better together and recently we have been doing those who have put in many hours proud. I look at the tables now and just feel sad, they do not represent. I do not feel the server I belong to is best by a long way, more over we have more improvement, but against such odds week after week I feel proud and yet disgusted this is what Anet come up with.
I would much rather see on same maps..in server fighting and something like factions orientated guilds. I think easily get the numbers for that, and at least alliances would be real and challenging.
Then Tournaments would be about factions, and also isn’t this GUILD wars. (sorry last edit)

It is a legit tactic to intentionally give up your objectives and points to one of the other servers and single focus on the one whom you don’t want to be #2. War is not fair and I accept that.
I disagree with this. 2 vs 1 was certainly intended, but I doubt giving up your points to play kingmaker was.
I also suspect the original idea was to allow servers to setup a 2 vs 1 against the leader, rather than allow the leader to select which server comes second. It ends up not working like that because coverage is such a strong trump card that not even a proper 2 vs 1 can rebalance it.
In any case, legitimate or not, as far as I’m concerned it’s exceedingly lame. It’s essentially the same as a bullying tactic which translates as an admission of weakness.
A number of us on Desolution took screen shots of 2 attacking German servers, both attacked simultaneously left and right on EB keep, then Elona entered Lords room while Riverside stood on bridge leading to keep to stop those dead that Wp from reaching keep again. Desolation managed to defend that instance then 3 minutes later again both attacked from same sides as before (one west one east), Elona breached first then went up onto the walls waited till riverside breached, stood waiting while out already depleted side struggled. Eventually Riverside flipped our keep, and 4 mins later Elona did. The proof is out there, but no one listens.
This shows just how broken WvWvW is in such situations when 2 servers are inherently related. It also happened with SFR and BB in last few hours before reset.
Longer range for ranger (and staff wielding clothies) SB should in my opinion be 1200, LB 1500 standard. The reason I would like this is to make viable many different decisions and to balance some issues with melee classes ability to close distance far to quickly in player v player environments. But also for PVE for a ranger to having a pulling role or less need for a pet.
Pets, though I know it’s part of rangers way, I would like to see heel command where a pet remains at your side and gives the player buffs by being a companion not a fighting force (like a chance to have stable feet or immune to chill if furry pet by your side) . Again helping I believe give the ranger more credentials in places you don’t need an AI being just too random to predict the outcome and thus a liability.
My experience of WvW with my Condition Necro is a lot of fun. I run it in a regular Guild train that nearly always has more Guardians to anything else with Eles and warriors thrown in. Following a decent commander closely and keeping tight is important, follow instructions I find all the things I lack I gain by being close to zerg leaders. So I get plenty of Boons..including swiftness, Stabilty etc.
On the odd occasions I get separated I use DS, dodge with wells, staff #3 , sceptre #2 to slow them down, and staff #5 (if off CD) where I am running.
I often have to pick up so many loot bags sometimes, Epidemic is just a must in my opinion, for even foe downed with conditions applied you can spread the joy, I save Dagger off hand skill #4 for when I am immobilzed usually, I run some of them chasing don’t.
I will often be on a fringe of my server zerg when taking over a key point, hitting freeze and then fear (if built for extra damage) what it does though is weaken the incoming zerg by a few, so instant impact is less and gives others more time, plus I communicate my observations before I use my skills, if several others like minded as me do the same kind of things you severely weaken the first wave of foes attack, giving time for your team to react and counter attack if situation and commander agrees, but you buy valuable time along with others.
I sometimes feel great being a necro and sometimes sorry for opponents, but most of the time I feel I have to play to my strengths use the team to give me what I lack. Hence Listen to Commander get on Team speak or what ever is used by your server, target marker your commander or ask party too, so you know where they are at all times, you’ll find plenty of boons being spread to get you out of the lack in build. If Commander isn’t giving instructions clearly, then zerg against another is doomed to fail, or just get lucky, ask for clearer calls. While this may not answer your direct question OP it does in a different way.
You’ll find what works for you as Utilities go from adapting to the team and also I find many will run away when they are separated from your pressure, don’t be tempted to chase unless it’s clear your team is in a winning position, a bit of self discipline goes a long way to survival and helping your server to overcome.
A dead condition necro can still if before they died effect the outcome of a battle, if a wipe is a coming nothing really you can do but take some with you.

I get angry at these kind of threads and very rarely voice my opinion on any threads.
I have already written above a viable alternative..rather than nerf which hurts a profession across all this game has to offer not just player v x player scenerios (which by the way isn’t the whole game or it would be 2GB or less in size and scope of playing), why not add a utility for those so concerned. Probably what is missing in the subtext is how easy it is to bring a thief down if handled right. I don’t see many threads saying that skill or chain is a bit OP but in fairness they are squishy more than cloth wearers even if they are supposed to be medium armour.
While maths and statistics tell a story, they are only figures when a result is achieved, One variable difference can turn something into less than mean. (mean being average).
Play the game, find ways. I am rubbish at certain things but I have got better with practice and perseverance. Having nearly every profession at 80 there is a lack of viable good builds in them all, and in each I know each could be nerfed, or instead why nor give a counter rather than a nerf and making all that effort with equipment a total waste of time.
All I say is lets have more viable builds for everyone, rather than calling or questioning builds for all in what ever genre they prefer, rather than depressing nerfs (all classes).
I play a thief as well as all other professions too. Each has it’s strong points and I see crying about them in each forum, from other players unable to deal with it. It would seem there will all ways be players that feel they deserve to be all powerful and understanding most games of this ilk is a larger form of rock, paper, scissors.
I have played other games that involved stealth, and in this game stealth is very weak compared. The best game I played many years ago that dealt with stealth was LOTRO (Lord of the Rings Online) in my humble opinion. In that game they gave a Ranger the utility to see and tag for set time frame those in stealth.
Something could be done similar a ranger if pet alive (as pets use other senses) can tag those in stealth no matter range. Ele could have a utility that allows to see movement in a mist around them in say 150. Mesmer can detect the mind of another nearby..etc.etc..
That way if players are so concerned they can juggle a Utility or make sure an Ally has, thus giving them fore warning. Also if such Utility is being used thief gets a message saying “you feel as if your being watched”. This makes the tactical exchange more riveting but also allowing for skill and counter measures.
just looking at your new hybrid 20/20/0/0/30 build. Funny I was considering something similar but employing “the Way of The Freaking Shatter” (WTFS .. ) as I now call your guide.
Have you tried torch as offhand with Dom IX Cleansing Conflagration?
I realise this may slow the build down a little, but has it’s benefits also in my opinion plus I can see all kinds of WTFS with it from other players too.
I am also considering http://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/Sigil_of_Hydromancy on the staff, as when I swap to it, I normally want some distance but also grouping. I haven’t tried myself yet as still levelling this alt slowly (Xmas takes a toll on gaming hours), just wondering on #4 of torch and swap to staff and #5, shatter clones and leap out of there with a fresh clone and chaos armour. Just how much fun I can have with it maybe, I shall have to try.

First and foremost Thank you Osicat, for a great guide and your helpful nature.
I have a lvl80 mesmer..that’s a Charr..all the way I ended up using staff and extra bounce, plus 20% reduction in staff skills. This was great in PvE as I leveled, but I felt I was lacking in skill and became quite lazy. Mesmer I came to late in GW1 but very quickly became my favourite and I so wished in GW2 that it would be again. I have joined a really friendly good guild that introduced me to WvW, I quickly realized I needed to specialize, as I have 5 lvl80’s nearly 6. I had some choices to make. My heart wanted to get Mesmer good, I read this thread and I wanted to try.
So instead of using my existing Charr, I created another, an asuran (very cute looking by the way) even from lvl1 I played better as an asuran mesmer, sure I have experience, but something feels more right for me being trickier and darting in and out. She is currently lvl45 now, and traited 0/20/0/0/15 ..I’m started to now see the value of this build and learning as I play, pretending I’m playing against players and making each scenario more and more difficult for myself.
I had some one comment today they rescued me…I answered by saying I’m a swan upside down..at the moment that is, I was taking on more than I thought possible, even though I was at times touch and go, I win the day and I’m having a lot of fun doing so. Looking forward to lvl60 so I can take trait lines above 20.
The Short version of above : Thank you for inspiring me.
Question for you ( a bit left field): Do you find race effects how you play Profession like I do?
(I guess I have Role-played so much over the years)

And here lies the enigma of human nature. We want to be at our best if we understand our role, however the game has made an attempt to break the holy trinity of MMORPGs I have so far 3 lvl80’s, 1 very close (75), 2 at 60+, and 3 others (yes I have 9 I love to play to my moods), that being said every profession has a similar thread.
The time will come when we realise we have to work together, not just in a dungeon but with our builds, communicate and I know this is going to sound bad, … compromise too.
Alas on saying that one thing that I feel would make more people happy and less time consuming is if we can change our trait distribution in PVE / dungeons easily and therefore utilities etc, without cost, either in a non contested area or out of combat.

I’m going to go against the grain here. I think that weapons and kits are just fine, with the upcoming patch unknown.
I would love to see the items laying around that can be used as a weapon like tree branches etc, have extra skill slots only for engineers. After all engineers see ways of making things work in a different way.
I feel it would add to the dynamics and role playing of the engineer profession. I would much rather this than wielding a hammer or mace, both while apparently fit, when I think of engineer go against it’s natural characteristics.
Engineers think and use imagination, I see no reason to change this about our wonderful selves that play the profession.

One solution would be in my opinion..is to make sure you have a mesmer on your side too..would others complain in your side. Once every 4 minutes after-all per mesmer…with more mesmers more often. Let alone every profession has far easier I win skills..but that seems to be beside the point…the point seems to be…..just got our backsides given to us uncomfortably…oh the largest thing I saw, was a mesmer field..time warp it’s called…needs nerfing..better complain.
There are skills that are mini battle changers, and plenty of those don’t belong to a mesmer…I speak from leveling every profession.
Sure it’s a nice skill, but very situational and on a long cool down.
I use Logitech G500 mouse. I have DPI set (4000 in my case)
standard WASD (to many games I gave played cannot change this so after 20 years of gaming it’s now hard to train to do differently)
Start with mouse…. imaginary right hand (as main weapon is always right and so is my mouse)….. here are key assignments and use.
[ ….middle mouse left flick …Steal profession specific abilities 1
] ….middle mouse right flick … profession specific abilities 2 …for alts
; ….. + dpi button …dodge …I find I dance my fingers and often double tap (disabled)
’ ….. – dpi button …swap weapon set
j …. top thumb mouse button …skill 1
k … middle thumb button …skill 2
l …. bottom thumb button …skill 3 (lots of this sometimes) but also feels ok to dodge straight after on same right hand.
Keyboard:
secondary weapon skills….left hand
q ….skill 4
e … skill 5
\ …heal (6)
Caps lock…walk/run (i use this in other role playing games..so just felt natural for me)
r … profession specific abilities 3
t … profession specific abilities 4
1, 2, 3 …. Utility skills
4 … Elite Skill
F1 … Inventory
F2 … Contacts
F3 … Guild
F4 … Hero Panel
F5 … Mail
F6 … Black Lion
F8 …World v World
F9 … Hint
F11 …Settings
I also have C as next target as-well as Tab (hang over from GW1 and C + space )
v …target and call target
