The charr could take Divinities Reach anytime they wanted.
They already tried and failed horribly, like with Ebonhawke Stronghold, after many failed attempts to even breach the walls the Charr simply believe its a “waste of time and effort”
Also with the awakening of the Elder Dragons they just kind of decided to work together since to not have one would mean the defeat of the others.

Necros have to give up all their slots for their pets. Its nice not having to do that.
You do realize Mesmers also give up skill slots for pets right? it is just that Mesmers pets take up weapon skill slots, which could be otherwise used for more DPS/CC/Condition based skills. However, changing this would utterly destroy the Mesmer class.
(I’m not trying to bash/flame you, merely pointing out that mesmer also gives up something for its pets)
I think Electro.4173’s idea of illusions persisting till out of combat is as close to how it should be with illusions, of course no matter what happens to illusions they are going to have to be nerfed and or tweaked.
This would keep the ramp up time, increase survivability and DPS allowing Mesmers to actually participate in content without being pigeon holed into the same build.
Frankly I tire of the Blizzard-esque “nerf” tendencies of developers, I know how to fix pvp, get rid of it, it is only going to drag GW2 down further due to its poor design to begin with. WvW and PvE are more than sufficient to keep player base longevity.
But heaven forbid they would rather drive players away than lose their e-sport, the only other way to fix everything is to isolate PvP completely, much like items are their own entity in PvP/PvE skills should follow, and before you start in about it “Ruining the game” Asian-based MMO’s have been using two sets of skills (Same skills different damage/effect/CD/DR’s) for over 10 years with a hugely positive results.
I don’t quite understand what you’re getting at, Sabbathius, so the more skills a class has the harder it is to master? Elementalist has Engineer beat by math standards. For me, once I understand what both of those classes did and were all about the learning curve for me kind of stopped.
I’ve had my mesmer at 80 for about 3 weeks and there is still a learning curve, and for all the complaining I do about the class, I still love it.
To OP: All I can say is give it a try and if it doesn’t fit your style try another class. My advice would be to bring some friends.
