I think we just need a harsher punishment for people who leave games.
I just encountered this problem after moving back home to the UK after being in America for a bit and transferring to an EU server. Massive pain and it’s really disappointing to see how they just haven’t bothered to fix it after all this time.
This is just my little suggestion. I think it would help everyone if the buff areas from the Hylek turrets were much more visible because at the moment they can be easy to miss.
Please can you revert the change to joining tpvp so that if you want to join you must speak to the npc in the mists. The quality of the tpvp games I’ve got has been significantly worse than before the last update. I think a large part of this is that people are given the option to join these games from the pvp menu. This is also made even worse I believe because someone thought it would be a good idea to make joining tpvp come before hot join pvp in the tabs.
I believe this simple change of making joining tpvp easier is directly responsible for the large influx of new players in it. I’ve seen so many more people with single digit ranks, even once had a rank two asking how he could get cool new clothes. Tpvp was never meant for new or inexperienced players but making it easier to join than normal spvp simply funnels these players into it.
Keep the option to join normal spvp from the menu, I think that’s a good idea, but please please remove the tourney join option.
Crazylegsmurphy you make the point about this game being stylised and that’s true but why does that simple fact make it ok to basically have female characters running around in lingerie while male characters get some actual armour? I think a good example is the heavy armour I use on my warrior. On a male it covers him head to toe in plate and chainmail but if I stick that exact same armour on a female character she will have more flesh visible on her legs and chest than actual steel. And ther are multiple other pieces of armour in this game that behave in the same way. Stylised or not the only purpose this divide serves is to offer up digital eye candy for the segment of the male audience who like women that way. I just think it’s rather immature to want all your female characters in video games to show more skin than actual clothing while the men dress in completely normal attire.
And yes you’re right I have a rather low view of men who choose to play female characters in video games, but I should clear up that I was referring only to the men who do this and then only dress their characters in the skimpiest and most impractical armours they can find. And I’ve even had these men literally say that they want their characters to look like prostitutes. So yes I take a dim view on these people, I hope you can understand why. On the other hand I’ve known men who play female game characters that actually take them seriously and kit them out in a believable way. This I’m fine with because it’s not at all disrespectful. I once asked one of these men about why he didn’t dress his female characters up in the skimpiest armours around and he told me that he thought that would be childish and he wanted his characters to look like they would be taken seriously.
I just think that if video games are to be taken more seriously as a form of art like books and movies are then developers should move away from these obvious attempts at titillating the younger male demographic with unrealistic childish depictions of women. While this does can happen in movies it’s much less frequent and far less over the top. Am I so wrong for wanting women in video games to be actual believable characters like Alyx from Half Life or Faith from Mirror’s Edge or Anya Stroud from Gears of War? Or should they all be like Ivy from Soul Calibur because it’s a stylised video game?
In ancient art that features the nude human form … body proportions are always believable and never exaggerated to make the people depicted more sexually appealing, again this is applied to both genders.
I may not agree about the Watchknights specifically, but I appreciate the spirit of most what you said – however, in this particular, you really do not have the slightest idea what you’re talking about.
Yeah I decided not to include stone age fertility charms in my point about art, I obviously have no idea about art do I. Yep a quick search of all the countless exquisite pieces of renaissance paintings and statues clearly shows all the women with DD breasts and men with 12 inch kittenes….
Last I checked, ancient art was not considered Renaissance.
My point still stands for old Greek and Roman statues. Or is over 2500 years not old enough for you?

Yep I was very disappointed when I first saw these sexbots. I just thought it was being very juvenile of ANet to make these robots with such obviously highly exaggerated female sexual characteristics. Clearly these robots were meant to appeal to all the sad little men who play this game as female characters with the largest possible breasts and dress them up in the skimpiest clothing they can find. I wish ANet was mature enough not to indulge these sad lonely men and didn’t include some of their kittentier armour designs like that split skirt that shows the characters underwear that seemingly 90% of female light armour users have.
To all the people saying it’s fine and shows powerful women let me point out some things. In ancient art that features the nude human form men and women are given equal representation. Also body proportions are always believable and never exaggerated to make the people depicted more sexually appealing, again this is applied to both genders.
Also being a powerful woman does NOT mean prancing about fighting monsters in high heels with massive breasts wearing little more than a bikini. That is not empowering women, if you think it is then you have a lot of growing up to do. Are modern day female soldiers given tube tops and mini skirts to fight in so they can show as much skin as possible? No they wear the exact same things the male soldiers wear.
I wish there were more game developers who had the balls to break away from these childish representations of women that have become far too common in video games and instead give us realistic and believable female characters. Look at some of the strong women in history like Boudicca, Joan of Arc, Elisabeth I and so on. None of these women had to off go around in bikinis to be taken seriously so why can’t more women in video games do the same?
Does anyone else think that people leaving mid game has actually become more of a problem now in tournaments? Even with the new punishment system I seem to be seeing far more people leaving. Today I’ve played five game (solo queue) and four of them had people leave. Before yesterday’s update for me people leaving midgame was something that didn’t happen very often. Wondering if anyone else has noticed this.
I found a picture of the people Lion’s Arch hired to count all the votes.
Notice anything about them?
http://www.tentonhammer.com/image/view/93825/preview
Yeah they’re all human! Poor Evon never stood a chance in the face of such blatant human bias.
Thanks for the replies, both those builds look good, I’ll have to try them out.
Hello there, I was wondering if anyone could help me out with a dps dungeon build for dungeons. I remember hearing a backstab build was good was wondering if that was still the case and what a backstab build is exactly.
Did it make the game look really silly? Absolutely?
That is subjective.
Asking the devs to waste valuable time and resources on this non-issue, now THAT is silly. Objectively.
Well if you bothered to read what I originally asked for then you would realise that it requires no work or resources. I just wanted asura banned from these professional tournaments to make viewing better. I don’t have a problem with asura in general, but I think seeing 8 of them all jumping around each other does look silly, and I think most people would agree. Imagine a League of Legends game where everyone was playing those teemo things.
Childish is whining about a perceived advantage. If the WINNING team played at a disadvantage and won, doesn’t that say something about said advantage? They beat MULTIPLE teams that had “4+ asuras”.
If u want all human tourneys, make that a requirement of the tourney. Don’t whine and request ANet to nerf a class. Next will be people whining that all players are wearing the same gear and u can’t tell what class it is.
Maybe you should try to read about what this thread is about? No much better to just come up with your own opinion about what it’s about.
I’m not whining about any advantage Asura players have, I’m saying that the over abundance of Asura in this pax tournament is not a good viewing experience on twitch. The human players were always much better to watch because of how much more visible all their actions were.
Winning team of the EU Invititional:
Team Paradigm (sp?)
Teldo – Asura
Symbolic – Asura
Ashene – Human
Xeph – Human
Phantaram – HumanSo basically what we have here are a bunch of never going to be competitive jacktards whining about something at a level they’ll never play.
fixd
Team paradigm were the exception to the rule. I don’t believe any other team had less than four asura. Also notice that all of the three humans on TP were female characters so I’m guessing the desire to play a girl and dress her up in skimpy clothes was more important for them.
And by the way, there is no need to try an insult us, it’s just very childish of you.
Just put in cast bars somewhere in the UI and asura’s advantages vanish in no time.
I hope this game doesn’t become about cast bars. Being able to instead read the animations of people to know what skills they are using is far more enjoyable and rewarding.
This isnt about Asura having an advantage in combat.
This thread was intented that Asura being a hard race to spectate. Its less enjoyable to watch, surely particle effects play a part in this aswell.
But even if that was fixed, Asura would still be the least viewable race in the game. And thats really all that matters if you’re taking your game to esports. You need to have a game that people will watch. Its not about the pro’s, its about the viewers.
Wrong. People with their own agendas are making it to be that way. The thread was originally:
asura are popular for pvp because their small size makes it harder to read their attacks. also makes watching the game less enjoyable because all you see are little asura running around without really seeing their animations well.
Well as the person who actually started the thread I can say that Terrahero is correct and you are mistaken. This thread is just about spectating big tournaments and only requested a simple solution that would require no work to fix. I simply included the line you quoted to hopefully avoid lots of comments from people telling me why everyone was playing Asura because it’s obvious. Also look at the title, it only says about banning asura from the pax tournament, nothing else.
I understand that completely Archer. But dealing with the Asura size problems across all pvp is something that would require coming up with a plan to eliminate it and then all the work involved to make it happen. I however was just trying to start with something simple that could be done instantly that would improve the the state of tournaments without having to do any work.
I think the some of the suggestions people are making are good but I would rather start with small things that we can get now like banning Asura from proper tournaments and then work up to having some sort of fix implemented for them.
How about making the characters look like humans / sylvari / norn just to the spectators?
It’s not about the spectators. It’s about the players. Good players can counter enemy plays by identifying the animations of their skills. If you can’t read the animations because the character model is too small, then good play is punished.
People like you have derailed this thread and made it into all sorts of issues that I didn’t originally intend which has also derailed the dev responses somewhat. Lots of people here, like you, are talking about the problems of playing against asura. I started this thread to specifically deal with all of us watching proper tournaments like the current pax one. Our personal play experience never came into it. I was simply pointing out that from a viewers perspective the asura are much harder to watch than other races. So I was simply wondering if banning asura characters from proper tournaments in the future is something ANet would consider to make viewing better without needing to do any work. I was never once talking about banning asura from all pvp or even about the experience people have playing against them. It was just my experience watching the streams and really noticing how horrible watching eight asura run around is. The spell effects like dragons tooth were some of the only real attacks I could make out from them.
Please refer to the snip I took of our release page (attached). Here’s the link for the full page: https://www.guildwars2.com/en/the-game/releases/august-06-2013/
This should help address the concerns about effects covering animations.
I’m pleased to see this coming, but effects were only part of the problem for me. Even in the 1vs1 fights where there weren’t many effects but both players were asura it still wasn’t very nice to watch because of how asura animations are just inherently harder to read. I know there won’t be any changes for the NA qualifiers but I would just like to know if banning asura from future tournaments is something you might consider to make for a better show. Again I’m only talking about proper tournaments with lots of people watching, not all pvp.
A lot of great points here.
I would like to add that these events, while being for the GW2 community, are also meant to reach out to the gaming community in general. There is an opportunity to advertise this game and bring people in, thereby growing and strengthening our player base.
That said, full teams of Asuras do not necessarily represent the game accurately. Variety of player races is a strength of GW2.
Maybe instead of banning Asuras from future tourneys, we can mandate that there one of each of the 5 races present on the team?
Yeah that’s another big issue I have with the over abundance of Asura in this Pax tournament. I would think a lot of people who don’t play the game but might be interested in it would be turned off if they see that it’s only a bunch of midgets fighting each other.
I appreciate all the suggestions from people about making permanent changes to Asura models and can understand it. But for the tpvp games I play, which aren’t at nearly the same level as the teams playing in pax, I always find a more mixed bunch of races, even have some norn and charr! So for me the bigger problem currently is how 90% of the players in these proper tournaments are running asura which could easily be improved with no work by simply not allowing them in tournaments that will have lots of people watching and lead to a much better viewing experience.
For several reasons. The main one at this point being that the EU Qualifiers have already ended, and it would be completely unfair to suddenly ban Asuras just for the NA Qualifiers.
Ok that’s fair enough. But how about for the actual final where you will hopefully have a lot more viewers? Neither team would be at a disadvantage. Also this thread has received quite a lot of support so for future tournaments might you consider not allowing asura for the teams interested in competing to keep things more fair and better to watch?
We believe the majority of the issue is the effects spam. News on that front coming VERY soon. Once that is out of the way we can start to address other concerns.
Jon
That would certainly be a help, but I still feel that the tiny size of asura is a problem for us watching these tournament games. As has been said their attacks are simply harder to read and the players are harder to keep track of. Also you have to think of people who might be new Guild Wars or not play it at all. When they see some GW2 tournament on the front page of twitch and all they see are midgets running around it just looks silly.
That’s why I simply suggested banning asura characters from proper tournaments like the pax one that you are running because it would require absolutely no work and would instantly improve the viewing experience for all of us.
That’s great to hear Defektive, but I don’t think it would be fair for you to do that unless everyone else was doing the same thing because you would be handicapping yourself just for the sake of the viewers.
I would love to see some charr in these tournaments though.
Pretty pleased by the support of this. There have been some good ideas, like having the option to view everyone as a human or maybe you could just set all races to the same height in pvp so big asura and smaller charr/norn. But of course I understand this stuff would take time to develop and implement so I would be interested in what someone at ANet thinks about just restricting asuras for the pax tournament and hopefully the NA qualifiers.
Some people protesting against this post are taking it way too far. I’m not saying that asura should be banned from all pvp even though I am aware of the slight advantage playing one gives you. I am only talking about for proper tournaments like this pax one where ensuring that the people watching have a good experience is incredibly important, especially at this early stage of competitive GW2 pvp. And only talking from the perspective of a viewer I find the asura horrible to watch because it’s so hard to see what they are actually doing. Over the weekend matches the few human players were far better to watch because they didn’t disappear in aoe particles so easily and all their movements were much more visible.
That’s why I think for these tournaments where streaming is going on players should not be allowed to play asura to give us viewers a better show. It wouldn’t be asking too much of the current asura players because there is go gear grind or tiered/locked gear in pvp that they would need to obtain first, it would litterally only take them five minutes to make a new character and be ready to go.
When everyone is playing an asura the advantage minimises. But I just think the other races are much better to watch as a spectator which is the most important thing in esports.
I’m not talking about the advantages of playing one though, I’m talking about how they are not a good race for spectators to watch.
Anyone who has been watching the matches will have noticed that the vast majority of players are asura with the odd human. I of course understand that asura are popular for pvp because their small size makes it harder to read their attacks. Problem is that this also makes watching the game less enjoyable because all you see are little asura running around without really seeing their animations well.
.
The current asura players wouldn’t be at any disadvantage having to make a new character since they wouldn’t need to grind for gear or anything but we would all have a better viewing experience.
Yeah the letters you get should give you all the information you need, along with the gold star markers on the map. But maybe you’re having trouble with things like finding out where Gendarren Fields is, in which case nobody can help you…
Same problem here. Really annoying since I only need 6 more grabs.
I just ran into a new Chinese player who was asking for help playing the game. Problem is their English isn’t very good so I can’t really explain things. It would be great if someone who speaks Chinese could get in contact with them and give them some pointers. Their character’s name is Hechao. Just tell him Thar sent you to help.
I was just wondering if we could have stacks of weapons and armour in the pvp collectible bank. I’m often trying out different builds and weapons with my characters and I find it frustrating that I can only store a single weapon skin when I often want to be able to store a couple of axes for instance.
In their current state I feel that the weapon master achievements are far too punishing. It’s not the 5000 number I have a problem with, it’s because you need to get 5000 killing blows, not just kills. Certain set ups will have less trouble with this then others, for instance a warrior using an axe, but for condition heavy builds it becomes far harder to get killing blows with an attack because a lot of the time your conditions will get the killing blow. But it’s even worse for the offhand weapons. How is any reasonable person supposed to get 5000 killing blows with a shield when you have a single damaging attack with a 25 second cooldown?
Wouldn’t it be a far better idea and much more convenient if you got credit for the achievements by simply getting kills with whatever weapons you currently had equipped and not having to rely on being lucky enough to get a killing blow?
Vayne is correct, swords don’t weigh much at all. Even very large two handed swords typically don’t weigh more than 5lbs. The reason for this is because if they were any heavier they would be impossible to actually fight with. For some stupid reason though video game developers think it’s cool to make swords into these huge unwieldy clubs that would be far too heavy to swing properly. I wish that just once I could play a fantasy game that didn’t have a problem with realistic sizes for their weapons.
But seeing as GW2 throws basic physics out the window when it comes to weapon weight I personally much prefer how male characters hold greatswords. If you were in a fight and using a two handed sword you would hardly be dragging it along the ground now would? And have you seen the default female greatsword attack chain? It just looks so weak and pathetic as they swish it from side to side.
Thank you for the info
I currently only need to walk into one more jump puzzle to complete my monthly achievement at the moment. So I’m wondering if I should hold off until the update tomorrow to complete and see if I get new rewards from it. But by doing that I could risk the whole thing possibly getting reset so then I end up with nothing. What do you lot think?
Well the Witcher is a single player game and the nudity in it was used properly in sex scenes and for prostitute NPCs. GW2 does not have any situations like this and it certainly isn’t any less of a game for that. In GW2 nudity wouldn’t serve any point whatsoever and therefore should not be included just so boys can stare at digital boobs. It’s not that there is anything wrong with nudity, it’s just that in this case there is no need for it.
The thing is that having naked women (because nobody seems to ask for naked men ever) in a game like GW2 is not a sign of maturity. To me a video game is mature if it has characters and stories that are complex and have meaningful themes to them. But if there was nudity in GW2 then all it would mean is that we would just have to put up with silly little boys pretending to be girls running around Lion’s Arch naked, yeah really mature. Apart from giving lonely boys something to stare at what would be the point of nudity in GW2 exactly? It’s not realistic and would just make the world a complete joke having all these women running around naked.
As the title says, I would appreciate being able to preview the different types of armour available that my class can’t currently wear, you know like how it was from launch. I’m honestly not sure why this change was made to armour previews and I don’t know who was asking for it. I know I certainly never went and bought some armour I couldn’t use because I liked the preview because it quite clearly says what type of armour it is.
Still no fix for Fast Hands trait only sometimes working correctly. This has been an issue since launch and I’m getting very tired of it.
Well from what I can tell each tier of gear, ie rabbit is 1-10, deer is 11-20, has either two or three different sets of armour for each armour type. So if you get the cheap chest then you will only get the common armour, but with the expensive chest you can get the more rare armour.
The discipline trait “fast hands” is still 50/50 on if it’s going to work or not. Half the time it reduces my weapon swap cooldown to 5 seconds and the other half of the time it does not. This bug has been around since release, I’m getting tired of it never seeing anything done about it.
I’m in exactly the same boat as you, storing all these dyes because I don’t want to decide which character to dedicate them to, this is especially true of some of the rare colours. I also think that making dyes account bound would add value to many of the not so popular dyes because that would mean instead of having to buy that colour eight times I would only need to once and collecting all dyes becomes something more achievable and much more appealing to work towards. I would personally rather account bound with a lower drop rate. This change would certainly make them more money from the gem store too which seems to be their main concern with dyes.
I think the dye system is great too Bacon, but I think it could be improved quite simply for the benefit of all players, even you.
I find it amusing that in a game full of dragons and mythological creatures your arguements are " they seem more realistic small". /facepalm
The thing is though that a sword in fantasy world is still a sword and should behave in the same way. I mean there used to be enormous dinosaurs roaming the earth of our planet and if humans had existed back then do you think they would be jumping around with 100lb steel clubs just because there were big lizards?
I played GW1 too and know full well the impractical armours and weapons there and in many other fantasy games. But I was only expressing my personal opinion about over the top huge weapons in video games and the reasoning behind why I don’t like them. And what do you mean it’s not my Guild Wars? I thought I was the only person that mattered in this community and the entire game was built just for me…. It’s just a saying mate, doesn’t mean I literally believe it.
I remember reading that first blog post about dyes, found here
http://www.arena.net/blog/live-and-let-dye-kristen-perry-on-the-gw2-dye-system
where it was said that dyes would be permanently unlocked and account bound. I really liked hearing this because it meant that customisation and changing different dye colours would be so much easier than in other games and it would apply to all my characters which made it even better. But then something changed.
“Customized dye should be something that denotes your characters progress.” Well personally I don’t get any sense of progress from collecting dyes. My sense of progress comes from going through my personal story and getting more skills and traits along with different armour, not from getting a new shade of blue. Your concern was that this progress would only be had one one character, but what’s wrong with having it as progress for my account? There are many things that I would consider personal progress that I can attain for all my characters like achievements, crafting skills, miniatures and personal wealth. I don’t think any of these are in anyway diminished by the fact that I can use them across my account, I would say they are improved actually because it means that not all the work I put into a certain character is lost when I switch to another.
Your other concern seemed to be that you wanted characters to have more unique colours, but there is no need to limit our options for this to happen. People will use many different colours because we all have our own tastes and styles, well except for the people who want a black/white or black/dark red colour scheme on everything, they aren’t unique But even for those people account bound dyes would be great and would save them a lot of time and hassle. Most of the time with this game you do a great job of not limiting our options in any way and make a lot of things easily obtainable while respecting the time we have available, but your choice with this dyes is a big limitation on the amount of customisation I have as a player across my account.
I don’t like to think it but I can’t help but feel you got greedy on this one by switching dyes to being character bound you hoped people would buy more dye packs off the gem store. But you should know how important it is to give people good value for their money. At the moment I have not, and never will buy a dye pack because with the dyes being character bound I don’t think it’s good value. But if dyes were account bound then myself, and other’s I’ve spoken to, would be much more willing to buy these dye packs because they would be useful for all my characters.
I’m also into believable weapons. And while guild wars is a magical world but physics still exists! The very largest greatswords would only weigh about 7-8 lbs, if a weapon weighs more than that it is simply unusable. Even the warhammers are much larger than anything ever used in reality but they are better than the greatswords. Many greatswords in this game are just so completely ridiculous and over the top. I simply can’t see how a 100lb lump of steel can look good, there is no elegance and sense of craftsmanship to it and instead of looking like a dangerous weapon it just looks comic. And when you see one of these 100lb clubs being swung about by some tiny little female character wearing a steel bikini it’s just so silly and only belongs in some anime or JRPG, not in my guild wars thank you very much.
