Well, D/D always felt fairly comfortable to me. However, between 30-35 when I downed my first Champ is when I felt that my Ele came into his own. At that point all the way to 80 he felt just as powerful and durable as my Guardian but far more engaging and fun.
So, I would say stick in there for another 10 levels (they go fast, I suggest you always have a food buff up for the exp gain) and you will be rewarded.
Dev: “AoE must be OP”
Sooo, the fact that small, highly-skilled squads can effectively dismantle an unorganized zerg by intelligent use of skills, terrain and communication leads Anet to deduce that AoE needs to be “toned down”?
Maybe it was that decent players are using AoE for area denial. Or, it could be that ANet feel zergs were being “unfairly” punished for mindlessly funneling through obvious choke points.
In all seriousness, ANet really needs to have at least one PR person review and/or sit with Devs while they do these livestreams to prevent them from pulling a ‘Jay Wilson’ like they did with this last stream i.e. saying crap that will set player base into an uproar. Saying that you are going to nerf AoE without also putting forth at least an outline or some idea of how you are going to approach said nerf is about one of the worst things the Devs could have done.
1st 80, Engineer. Well, we can all see how Engineers turned out.
2nd 80, Guardian. Still a really good profession even after an early string of nerfs, but the game play gets fairly static and monotonous after a while.
So I started a D/D Ele. From 1-30 was really fun. Sure, I died while learning but I still had fun. Post-30 up to 76 (currently) was/is amazingly engaging and fun. I felt I had finally found a class I could really call my “main”. Then this comes out and I am not even sure I want to take my Ele to 80 and invest the time and effort into getting Exotics for him
From everything I have read, you really should consider Sapphire Jewelry (P/T/H) instead of Ruby (P/Pre/Crit Dmg) for WvWvW. Something to think about.
As for your armor, you can actually get most (no legs, unfortunately) of your P/V/T pieces from Karma vendors in Orr:
- Helm: Mortal or Whispering set
- Shoulders: Arcon set
- Chest: Armageddon or Mortal set
- Gloves: Armageddon or Arcon set
- Legs: No P/V/T legs so you might just have to suck it up and run AC for those.
- Feet: Armageddon, Mortal or Whispering set

Starting out, I think you could easily get by with splitting between Knight’s and Valkyrie until you get enough krama/tokens to buy your target set. Honestly, dungeons really aren’t all that tough to being with. You could walk into about any Exp mode in greens and do just fine if you are a competent player.
If you are worried about WvWvW, just stay with the zerg until you have the gear you feel you need before you start roaming.
Oh, the one vet that I never did manage to bring down was a Champ Cave Troll. He applies something like 6xbleeds per hit and they hurt like the dickens. He also has a ranged knock-down and a snare and the cave trolls respawn in that area relatively quickly and and their knock-down is annoying as hell. I attempted him like 5ish times then said screw it and gave up
You most certainly can solo champs as a D/D ele, I have solo’d quite a few. The most memorable to date are the Spider champ guarding Provernic Crypts in the Gendarran Fields and the the Ettin Champ in the SE of Lornar’s Pass that is right by the vista.
The Spider’s pretty much a one trick pony with its poison, which is surprisingly week. The only other issue is the hatchlings that spawn and the oozes in the hallway. Oh, speaking of the hallway, the Spider is on a fairly short leash and resets if you go to far down the hallway where you fight it (don’t fight in the room, the spike traps will down in seconds).
As for the Ettin champ, the only real issue I encountered was that s/he/it took me over 10 minutes if not more to kill, he has tons of health and a Vet Ettin (Vettin?) respawns right near him that you have to periodically deal with as well. Fortunately, the Vet goes down fairly quickly if you focus fire him. The trick is just to keep moving and rotating through all your attunements.
I honestly will be shocked if the disparity between classes functionality and basic game mechanic awareness isn’t fixed.
There is absolutely no reason whatsoever that my husband who is a level 80 fully exotic geared gaurdian should have an HONEST answer of “What’s a field?” when I asked him how many he has.
It is complete and utter crap that the ONLY class in this game who is dependant or even cares about this games mechanics is the elementalist.
Not to dig on your husband, but if he is a Guardian and has no idea what his (and other professions’) fields are he really needs to take the time to learn.
As Guardian, I know full well most of my fields (and good number of those from other professions) . Hammer 1 chain 3 & 5, GSword 4 (or is it 3 now, ANet likes to move them around to mess with us), Mace 2, Staff 3 & 5. They are all Light fields. Hammer 2 will is a blast finisher causing area retaliation, GSword 3 is a projectile finisher that cures conditions.
Hammer 3 having such a short cooldown means Guardians can take regular advantage of blast fields more than any other profession. I see a water field, Hammer 3 AoE healing, I see a purple bubble, Hammer 3, Chaos Armor for everyone! And as a Hammer Guardian I am keeping retaliation up on my allies by using my Hammer 1 chain along with Hammer 2.
…
PS. As for your question, he’s got… 1, maybe 2. And they’re all on his longbow if I remember right. Maybe it’s not right to blame him for not knowing fields, but if he’s played with you long enough he should’ve at least realized how many finisher’s he’s got.
Guardians don’t have access to longbows, not sure where you got that from
For PvE:
I usually role with GS + mace/focus.
GS still feels, at least to me, to put out the best overall damage in PvE plus its mobility is much better than Hammer for PvE. Sometimes I will throw on a Hammer just to change things up, or if I want to add even more durability to my mace/focus combo.
IMO, nothing beats mace/focus in terms of survivability. Heals, blocks, blinds, mace/focus has got a little bit of everything to keep our tiny health pools topped off.
For the tiny amount of time I have spent in WvWvW I went with Staff + scepter/focus.
I had the same mace epiphany as you did. Swapped from sword/focus + GS to Mace/focus + GS around level 20 and I haven’t looked back. The survivability with the mace/focus combo is just to good to give up
…PVE I have been very successful with all my builds it did not matter whether I went all kits, pistols, pistol and shield or rifle…
This! I have been p/p conditions + exlirs with Coated Bullets, Quad-kitted and (current) power/prec/crit dmg Rifle/grenade/elixir build. All of them quite capable of holding their own against multiple mobs and Vets. You may lack the stopping power of a Guardian or Warrior but what you gain is versatility in spades.
One thing I think players coming from other MMOs are still having trouble with is that you cannot ignore defense stats no matter what class you play. You either need to trait into defense or dedicate some gear slots to it. For me, I usually go with 2 – 4 jewelry slots dedicated to defense depending on how heavily I am invested into defensive traits.
I have to agree with the OP. Even though I only died once on the Vigil quest where Claw Island falls to Zhaitan it was insanely difficult. I don’t mind creative difficulty (jumping puzzles are good example of this). However, just throwing unending waves of mobs at the player is just lazy.
Referring back to the Claw Island quest, there is a point where you need to go rez an NPC, I think her name is Mira. Unfortunately, she is down in the middle of a bunch of Risen and no matter how many you kill, they keep coming. That part took me a good ten minutes of: clear enough Risen, partially rez the NPC, reposition as the next wave comes in, rinse repeat. Thank goodness I was Engineer with decent survival stats and gear else it would have taking much longer to finish if at all.
I switch between a dual-pistol/elixir condition build and a grenadier condition build in SPvP and consistently score at or near the top of my team. So, yeah, not sure what builds others that complain are using but so far I do pretty well overall in spvp. Though, I have noticed almost every other Engineer I have encountered in SPvP is using a turret build, so maybe that is the issue.
Same happen to me the other day. Had 1g6s, the next day 6s
Yup, lost the first gold I ever made when i logged in this afternoon
Missing about 1 gold myself, what is even sadder is that it was my first gold ever made went from 1g6s to 6s.
