Condi Reapers = Really Not That Great

Mostly agree with the OP. I main condi reaper and the three things that have given me the most trouble are:

1. Daredevil smart enough to kite me around
2. Diamond skin ele
3. Shoutbow warrior, hilariously enough

Have never had trouble with revs but perhaps I have not fought a decent one yet.

Reaper already has enough counterplay in that anyone with a brain can range them down and kite them around. I’m a fan of how chill works now, personally.

I won a 1v2 as reaper

Valdorian.2481

I main Reaper. It is reasonably well balanced. It is one of the only classes that scales well in team fights and while outnumbered. I think that gives an impression that it is OP. 1v1 is actually harder than 1v2 most of the time.

This is because of the cleave mechanics that Reaper has over base Necro and the way Life Force works. In a 1v1 situation it is pretty easy to be starving for LF. In a team fight or 1v2 all the cleave you have in Reaper Shroud can make me feel like I’m never going to run out of LF. This is especially true against minion or pet builds. Cleaving down all minions from a minion master necro or downing a Ranger pet or mowing down all of an Engineer’s turrets or killing all mesmer illusions before they are shattered is really powerful and it feeds LF generation like crazy.

Reapers can probably do things that you can’t do on a good dueling class but they are surprisingly handicapped in duels.

Exactly this. As a reaper main who PvP’s and duels extensively, I can say that oftentimes fights against multiple opponents (or single opponents with minions/clones/etc.) are easier than fights against single opponents. This is because a single opponent can kite you, dodge your best attacks, and otherwise play to your weaknesses. In a group setting, this is rarely the case as the odds are that at least one of the opponents face-tanks your RS1, attacks you with spectral armor, or brings their own army of pets/minions for you to gain large amounts of RS off of.

Or in the OP’s case, two guards that probably fed the life force generation and allowed him to stay in RS long enough to cleave down the entire group of four. This could have easily been prevented by one of the human opponents simply taking a step back and engaging from range instead of standing in the AoE’s and cleaves.

CLASS RANKING TIME letz do this

Surprised reapers are not most people’s #1, deathly chill is the most broken trait in the game. Everything else seems pretty balanced to me. Can’t comment on berserker though since I never see them or play them.

Do you have anything substantial to show that it’s so broken? Or am I just going to see another strange damage breakdown from sPvP that doesn’t look right at all?

The damage is fine to me, it’s the fact that necros have a stupid amount of passive chill available to them, alongside the fact that sigil of ice being an “on hit” sigil is what makes deathly chill broken. There is no amount of condi clear that can currently avoid being permanently chilled by a reaper. Because of this, there is a constant 800-1000 damage per tick plus a permanent 66% skill cooldown increase when fighting a necro. However, no reaper will agree that it’s broken because people love staying OP so this argument is futile and we can agree to disagree.

Having said that, always fun to watch people die. Good video!

Personally, I don’t think we’re “that” underpowered. I think a couple minor buffs in different areas would help, but as much as some rangers want and we’d quickly become extremely op

Honestly, i think a lot of the problems stems from things other than class balance. For me personally, I think these are the problems

1. the pet. as I said, I don’t think it’s as bad as (/voluntary interruption to get rid of the kitten) some people make it out to be. but it would be nice to get some improvements. better AI, a bit more survivability in zerg fights (perhaps aoe immunity?), the ability to queue your pets attacks (e.g. now, if i send my wolf to attack, 9/10 times, he does a knockdown on his first attack. i’d like to be able to set it up so it does say, 3 normal attacks, a knockdown, then F2)

2.we think we’re underpowered. this is purely psychological, but, if you think you’re bad, or if you think you have a handicap, you’ll do worse than if you think you’re strong.

3.others think we’re underpowered. anytime i’m roaming with friends, and we run into another roaming party/zerg, guess where the thieves go? straight onto me. rangers are a typical “easy kill” to a lot of people, and therefore they will target you first. at least that’s what it feels like

A good suggestion with queuing abilities, I’d be for it 100%. I also agree about being targeted. Sadly, I don’t see that changing until we get some more good rangers out there to change popular opinion!

But closer to topic so would it be going too far to make this generalized statement:
There are higher expectation of the performance on the part of a ranger player, than for some/most other profession for a similar view-able output. So the hypothetical “bad” ranger could in fact with a different profession (one with lower expenditure/output) be “decent” to “great” depending on that ratio.

I’d agree with this. To be honest, I really like that the class is harder to play than many (if you play it well that is). I enjoy and want a challenge! My problem stems from the fact that in my mind, I can only be so competitive as long as the pets are so unreliable.

The RNG factor just makes the Ranger a harder profession to master, and its not going away, because the Ranger is supposed to be a pet class, where you are effectively controlling the actions of 2 characters instead of 1. The Best Rangers are able to take advantage of the Pet’s Strength’s instead of complaining about the Pet’s Weaknesses. The Bad Rangers are the ones who don’t like to use the pet.

It’s not that people don’t like the pet ( if you don’t then you shouldn’t be playing a ranger) I think it’s more people don’t like the unreliability of the pet. If they fixed the way the pet works and made it more reliable then I doubt any rangers would have issues. It’s because anet have said that they can’t (AKA don’t want to) fix pet pathing or mechanics that people just want it outright removed.

yet, the unreliability that is the core of the problem (for now), can be managed if you bother with it. Yet, the same “haters” that cries about it, does little or nothing to counter it either.

But I shouldn’t have to “bother with” an unreliable pet in the first place. I love ranger, and will quit Gw2 entirely before I rage-switch to another class, but I’d like to see some changes to make the pet much more of a threat, rather than something that can only be counted on for one F2 skill (and even the F2 skill is a MAJOR tossup).

Completely agree with this. I’m not saying remove the pet, I just want something I can count on to do x amount of damage.

I’m not completely advocating removing the pet, sure I’d like it, but it’s not the only solution. As far as taking advantage of the pet, how do you propose you can do that if the enemy is constantly stealthing/blinking around? It’s all well and good to say “play to the pet’s strengths” but that is not always (and you might say not often) possible depending on the class you’re fighting, the terrain, or the pet AI itself.

Thats just a problem with pets, thats not why you see more bad rangers. Mostly bad rangers is because bearbow is so effective while leveling up

But even if you fixed pet F2 skills, increased their attack range, and gave them a speed boost, it’s STILL an RNG thing to me. It isn’t something you can guaranteed count on. Sure the pet may hit more often/more reliably, but there will always be the problem that YOU do not have much control over the pet. Not to mention the fact that stealth COMPLETELY throws off the pet and completely takes it out of the game so to speak.

The answer is quite simple. The good players don’t wanna rely on the “RNG” of the pet’s attacks. Give us the option to disable the pet entirely, or have more active control over it (what a shocker, some micro-management), or else it will always be this way even if Rangers were miraculously buffed one day (I jest). I would LOVE to see some different F1-4 options that could be used more in combat rather than us having control over 1 skill. Shoot, I’d love to be able to actually tell the pet where to go and set waypoints, etc., but I know that is a fool’s dream.

Just kind of wanted to vent, as I’ve mained ranger since launch (and don’t have a single other level 80) and am tired of not being viable against the harder to play classes that offer a higher ceiling (and no, I’m not talking about warriors).

Let me fix the class on some “easy” steps.

1.Remove the pet ;they can not be fixed they will never be,they are a handicap and a source of frustration.

2.A new mechanic Preparations:

How they work?:
They will be the new ranger f1 f2 f3
They will grant a bonus to the user while under each preparation.
They will also work as a weapon modifiers,so using certain weapons under certain preparations will make them have added effects or work different.
They will have a cooldown like elementalist attunements swap of 15sec
The beastmaster trait line will be removed in exchange of the preparations trait line.

F1 Read the wind: Get a bonus to power (+60) and extra 300 range ,while under this preparation.Use your bows and offhands at max range without the need to trait.

F2 Marksman Wager:Get a bonus to precision(+60) and 25% increase speed.

F3 Expert Focus:Get a bonus to toughnes(+60) and a small hp regeneration.

Rework and delete traits related to pet.

Remove shouts:they dont belong to a petless ranger.

Bring back stances:i still can understand that something so integral to gw1 ranger didnt make it to gw2.Escape,Dodge,Natural stride,Storm Chaser,Whirling defense….

Revert spirit functionality to gw1,and bring back FROZEN SOIL, EoE,and maybe Toxicity.Gw1 spirits were a double edge sword and that made it interesting to use,gw2 spirits are boring and passive.

Bring back Smoke trap.Because traps.

And last but not lest where is my D-SHOT? .Seriously ,where is it?.

The gw2 ranger is a shadow and a joke of what gw1 ranger was.

I read this about the F skills and almost cried from how amazing that sounds.

As someone who decided to play a ranger, I picked the class because, like many, I wanted to play that “archer/survivalist” type role. I debated and debated on what class to pick, since from the beginning, I did NOT want a pet tagging along. Personally, I’ve just always hated them. After playing for over a year now, I can definitely say that hatred has increased, as I have watched my pet fail to hit moving targets, sap 20-30% of my damage, draw aggro from mobs I was trying to run through, and die in an instant in an AoE storm in WvW.

Having said all that, I am extremely in favor of appeasing people on both sides of the “pet fence.” I would like to see basic fixes such as F2 skills activating immediately, and more importantly, some better pet A.I. I’d also love to see a stow option, as some people like myself do not and have not ever wanted to use the pet. I like the idea of some kind of aura or special buff when your pet is stowed, but at the same time it needs to be balanced enough so that not everyone goes right to stowing their pet for the rest of their days.

I think it would be cool to let the players play how they want. Fix/change some pet aspects, and give players the option of getting rid of them. Also, good to see all the dev response on here, makes me have some hope for this class after suffering for so long!

Having just come back to GW2 recently, I’m certainly surprised and happy to see these issues finally being addressed. As someone who ONLY plays ranger, I’ve been anoyed by many of these problems since day 1, and they have caused me to stop playing not once, but twice now.

The one thing I’d like to add (and I’m sure it’s been stated already) is the fact that stat improvements from things such as ascended trinkets are underwhelming when compared to every other class, and yet our pet receives no bonus from better armor/trinkets.

Hey all, I have a few questions concerning my ranger. Currently I’m running a glass cannon build, but I have reached the point where I know I have to sacrifice some damage for basic survivability. My questions are:

1. What is the point where crit damage and chance become “worthless”…what percent?

2. What is the ideal ratio of vitality to toughness?
