I have noticed a couple of bots doing circuits of the high level areas in the last couple of days and as a public service i will offer some advice as to how to spot a bot.
1: A bot will follow the exact same route in a circuit with zero variation for hours on end, unlike a real person that will vary their route since even a person with a photographic memory does not have a memory this perfect and minor distractions or reactions to other players will alter their behaviour.
2: A bot will not respond to tells, if you see someone who looks suspiciously like a bot send them a tell and ask them what they are doing, even someone who has a limited command of English will at least respond with something, also do not make your tell a simple hello, ask them a question in simple English most players on EU or US servers know at least enough to get by in the game and answer simple questions, like “hello, how long have you been playing?” or something, if you get a response that makes a degree of sense then they are probably not a bot.
3: Absolutely bog standard equipment, this is not exactly the most reliable sign of a bot, but it can be supporting evidence if they fit the other signs. Bots are essentially disposable so a botmaster will not invest the time and effort of making their bot look fancy since they are not stupid and they know a bot will inevitably get banned so they do not usually waste time on frivolities like custom colored armor or expensive bind on equip gear.
So that is how I spot a bot, now what can I do if I see a bot?
Well there is only one way to deal with them without breaking the terms of service or harassing a real player. You report them by selecting the bot and right clicking on their picture and selecting the report option. Then go on your way and let the GMs deal with the problem.
I hope more people will report any bots that they see since they are usually run by real money traders which are as we all know a blight on the community that leads to in game inflation. And if we stamp them out early they will not become an epidemic like they are in other games.
The best method I have is to gather raw materials and sell them, the gathering tools are cheap and you can make a decent profit.
Sadly I cant even rant about cancelling my subscription, poor customer service etc as I already paid for the game. I’m just downloading the client from an MMO I had left – but if its gonna be as flaky as this I’m not sure I want to continue.
I only bought the game last week and couldnt play because the registration servers were down.
I dont think it is unreasonable for us to expect a level of service after paying for an online only game.
The other thing that puzzles me is is why dont any of these companies use redundancy – ie take a server down for maintenance, or a server fails – you can have a spare one to take its place !!!!
Seriously mate, relax , games been out 4 weeks, its been massively purchased beyond Anets expectations, there`s bound to be teething problems . Aside from bug fixes there`s hacked accounts and scammers to contend with, gold sellers etc etc.
Take the opportunity to get a bit of your life back, i am…i`m off to watch some tv on catch up …it`s been sat in corner of my lounge looking very neglected recently.
I agree here, this game is wildly more successful than Anet could of imagined, But this is not a bad thing, in the long term it will mean that they get more more money to spend on development and improving the game, in a year this game will be the WoW killer I have been waiting for.
I have noticed this too, it tends to happen most when the Z position of the mob is greater than the player (closer to the surface with water level being Z=0)
I have noticed that when my warrior loses adrenalin because she has been out of battle for too long she will say “gaining adrenalin” instead of saying “losing adrenalin” which is the case.
Report it as spam, for mail and in map chat.
I would like to see a automated spam control system in chat and mail to prevent this,
All it would take is for a message filter to look for messages with certain properties like mentioning money and a website to work.
I report them as spammers since they are repeating the same message over and over again.
It would be nice however to have an option to specially report gold sellers in the report dialog box to avoid confusion like this…
Also I would love to see a GW1 style banning where the banscythe cuts them down ingame.
I saw it once in GW1 and it was cool.
