i feel like thief is the “duelist” class, since many of the skills in it are to trade damage while evading incoming damage.
We can roam much more efficiently then other classes thanks too high mobility.
Basically the “assassin” aspect is clearly gone, since bursting someone down quickly is dwindling, but at least we have the “duelist” aspect, where we can control damage to our favor.
I dislike the 4 second revealed duration because they don’t plan to fix it when they get to the real bread and butter.
I would prefer to have the revealed duration if I don’t land an attack in stealth, it provides counter play, and thieves will be considered balanced for once.
IMO thiefs going to be the new “release” necro, nobody is going to want them because they won’t deal any dmg outside of stealth, they are limited to stealth every 4 seconds, and I’m guessing the next thing to go is our back stab and condition dmg, since we can spam a couple moves..
Sorry for the rants but this new change is traumatic to my gaming experience, Watching a.net do this to thief is like watching the South Park episode where Indiana jones gets kitten YouTube it if you’d like but it’s disturbing and tbh so Is watching a net throw thief down the garborater
A bit dramatic don’t you think? I get groups as a support thief, and i’m sure thieves of other variants do as well. Play with some odd builds and you may find your class much more expansive than you once thought.
I’m just saying, a.net won’t stop until thief is hardly useful, just like morello did to Irelia, and when the next expansion comes out, I bet they’ll make a class that fills the same niche as thief, but does better, and their we go thief destroyed.
A.Net, i praise you for fixing the culling issue, even though it is a nerf to thieves who abused it, i was normally in the back lines of my zerg using a shortbow or dual pistol helping take down enemy zergs.
Lets get to the bread and butter on why im here, and thats perma-stealthing(in a sense). I know you guys dont want to “over-nerf” us, but lets face it, if i wait the stealth duration(4 seconds with my spec), and then use CnD(cloak and dagger), I can go stealth instantly, and ill recieve no revealed penalty. You’ve taken a good balance change, and turned it into a minor nerf, i can live with that, but when you decide to nerf whats really broken about thieves, i just know you wont revert the previous “4 second revealed duration” nerf.
I think you should of given us the proper nerf, and not a minor nerf, since now i can abuse stealth at the enemy back line, occupying 10+ people trying to kill me, while my zerg pushes in.
I cant balance thief for you, but this minor nerf will only change Thief PvE, PvP will be at a minimum, and stealth abuse will remain the same.
TL;DR i think you should of gone a different route, but its too late now, i will enjoy stealth abuse as much as possible, until you give us a reveal duration when we leave stealth.

I apologize for my bad spelling I’m using my iPad to reply to this thread
Thief is definitely worth rolling, but so is every other class. Thief fills a roam niche, it has high mobility and can escape when things go down hill. The thief brings shadow refuge which can act as a revive trinket since you stealth yourself and an ally for 13 seconds. Theirs more to thief then heart seeker and CnD followed by backstab, I suggest you play one in SPvP for a hour then Lvl one to 20, and learn the mechanics really well.
Death blossom, flanking strike, and any move that has the word evasive means your invulnerable to damage for the duration, and I suggest you use those skills defensively to win trades.
Thief has a high skill cap, maybe not as technicle as the engineer, and it doesn’t require as much intelligence and game time to master as an elementalist, but it requires well timed skills and the ability to adapt to every situation to excel. With the upcoming stealth nerf it will require even more skill, because if you fail to land a backstab you will still receive the revealed debuff.
If your up for a challenge in both PvE and PvP then it sounds like thiefs the class for you, since you mentioned you enjoy stealth mechanics.
I rolled a human, all thieves are cool, from the giant norn t the tiny Astra, just roll every race you want to try and see which one has the coolest animations.
Enjoy your new thief bro.
I still want death blossom to be more useful to burst thieves, rather then it scale well with only condition, I want it to be balanced between the two or more solid damage then bleed, or even have a poison on it, I have to go back to work, feel free to discuss about whether or not death blossom should change or not, but case and point, shirt bow is a good alternative to dagger dagger, especially with the control you can provide with dual range weapons
Except my suggestion is realistic since dagger dagger is more of a burst weapon set, your suggestion is far to extreme, your telling me that a condi thief couldn’t do well with pistol dagger shortbow right? http://m.youtube.com/watch?v=W9NlTT9g7wQ
Ask yourself what roles condition specs do good with, ask yourself what condition thieves excel at, then tell me short bow is not good, and that burst thieves should suffer because of troll builds abusing death blossom spam for conditions, and why burst thieves can’t use this for duelling up close and personal
Except I never said condition builds were stuck to D/D and couldn’t get any use out of other sets, unlike you who seem to think D/D is meant to be a pure burst direct damage set when there are other sets that are more focused on pure direct damage.
Tell me why should condition thieves that like to utilize all of the d/d skills should suffer because some idiots who think heartseeker + backstab make a set pure burst are complaining because they didn’t think about their set before pigeonholing themselves into a “burst direct damage” role?
And shortbow is great here and there but it by itself is no more useful to a condition thief than it is to a direct damage thief, just how daggers are no less useful to a direct damage thief than they are to a condition thief.
I really don’t see how valid condition dagger dagger would do, you get 3 death blossoms, I use my heal and remove all bleeds poisons ad burns, and then turn on you while you wait for initiative, and the remaining time to weapon swap. any smart player will abuse the down time you out yourself .
Shirt bow can constantly immobilize enemies, caltrops from dodging can constantly slow enemies, venom trap will snare your enemy, devoured venom will root your enemy, meanwhile your safe applying conditions and killing them from 900 yards away.
I don’t see why you are going strictly for numbers with death blossom, that’s just bad play over all when you can kite for days and kill them slowly, wait isn’t that what condition specs want to do? Melt their health? Add in safety and survivability and your a strong asset to your team, opposed to blowing your initiative death blossoming.
In the end we can only agree to disagree, I’m for the utility, and your for the highest numbers possible.
Also with the upcoming nerf to stealth providing counter play, burst thieves will suffer if they don’t land a back stab, why wouldn’t death blossom getting a buff for burst thieves not be reasonable?
Acrobatics(condi thieves use this trait) gives you short bow traits.
with cluster bombs long travel time and short bleed duration it really doesn’t work like you think it does and is infact better as a direct damage attack than a condition attack.
And I’ll just reiterate the point of just because you like to limit your self to 2 skills in a weapon set doesn’t mean everyone else should pay for your lack of use of everything else.
Is that a joke? I use my skills according to situation, like most next Lvl players.
If you play wow you’ll know that you want to save a death knights death grip for a hunter disengage right? Same thing with death blossom, I use it to reduce incoming damage, I’ve won fights with 1k hp against other thieves because they don’t know that death blossom is worthy to use as a damage reducing skill.
Maybe i should post this on arena junkies, I won’t have narrow minded people who just try to get the biggest numbers, because numbers mean nothing when your dead.
Game play and style will always beat numbers, good players can make those numbers mean nothing. When/if a.net implies rating/mmo in spvp arena, we will see what builds are truly good, but right now everything is work in progress and so far I see death blossom crippling burst thieves who use it for more then high numbers.
So you find it works well as a defensive move but you don’t want it to be just a defensive move you want to change it so that it works better for your build specifically regardless of its effects on untold numbers of other builds and thieves?
And you don’t see an issue with that?
In that case I want heartseekers direct damage reduce but I want it to apply some conditions and I want backstab to do no damage but refresh all conditions on the target and put a condition removal block on them!
Except my suggestion is realistic since dagger dagger is more of a burst weapon set, your suggestion is far to extreme, your telling me that a condi thief couldn’t do well with pistol dagger shortbow right? http://m.youtube.com/watch?v=W9NlTT9g7wQ

I think everyone’s forgetting that caltrops is a aoe cripple, and it lasts 11 seconds and re applies every time you walk on it, landing cluster bombs should be child’s play.
Also keep in mind bleed duration, Cluster bomb does slightly less damage over the same duration, and the ability to out last threw kiting is a great pro for a condition build..
I’m just offering a viable alternative to dagger dagger, not implying short bow is better, for damage. don’t be so narrow minded their is more to the game then damage. think about what a weapon can supply for your build.
People don’t like change, but right now death blossom feels like it is gimping burst builds, and honestly condition builds can do just as well with a short bow.
(edited by XZERO.3014)
Tl;dr short bow provides the same game play and provides aoe condition, is ranged, and can kite for days just like pistol dagger, and provides more mobility
(edited by XZERO.3014)
Why are you so offended? You provided an argument that instigated that I don’t know how to play so i theory crafted different solutions on the top of my head on how to counter a common problem in spvp, and i see successful condition thieves CnD and use the pistol stealth opener to apply bleeding stacks, they use caltrops on dodging and kite all day with the pistol dagger 3, they dont need death blossom for bleeds as much as you claim they do, I will go ahead and test a ranged spec which provides better kiting and more aoe condi thanks to the poison field and cluster bomb and tell you how it goes, seeing how numbers isn’t as valuable as a poison reducing incoming healing I think I’ll do beyond the death blossom spam, because utility Is valuable
Lets talk condi for a second, you want to out last your target and by having more accessibility to kiting I think that short bow will be a better alternative opposed to going melee for 10 seconds just to apply death blossom
Death Blossom, and I like the idea of giving d/d better AoE damage.
no
Daggers don’t hit multiple targets for a reason (on any character aside from Elementalist which is a spellcaster anyway)
you have Dancing Dagger if you need to tag small mobs
if you want AoE use shortbow
if you want a melee weapon that does AoE use Sword,it slashes, not stabs, which hits multiple targets
people need to stop asking for fixes to things that are already on par with other things, ask questions on how to fix what you’re doing wrong,or theorycraft and attempt to learn different things, just because one thing you want to use doesn’t work doesn’t mean you need to whine about it because it may work for someone else
this is why there are so many nerfs to ridiculous issues…..
that is,if anet is even listening to complaints, which i’m sure is happening
It isn’t a l2p problem, Lets theory craft on what I’m doing right.
Example: warrior has you entangled and uses quickness and hundred blades.
1. Stealth makes you invisible but you still take damage.
2. Shadow step but you waste a utility you could use later for a dire situation
3. Death blossom in place evading damage but losing initiative and doing 3k bleed damage over 11 seconds which can be cured by any class.
So by giving thief the ability to deal 2k damage to heavily armored targets and a 11 second poison we can basically make the initiative worth it due to short bursts dealing damage that can’t be removed and poison reducing 33% of the incoming heal, it wont be overpowered just more useful to a burst weapon set, you’d even see it used more on next Lvl play
In my defence short bow already excels at aoe condi dmg and it provides more mobility to get around the map, the condi on death blossom seems like a banana in a group of apples, it just doesn’t fit
Although their are strong aspects of the thief that people abuse their are aspects of the class that do need buffs, if thief is more of a duelist class that excels in small bursts and out trading, it should be made more like that.
So death lotus has a built in evasive duration, and I’m using it solely for the evasive purpose, however if a warrior is using hundred blades and I am out of endurance, I’m going to dump my initiative into death lotus. The next two options I have is:
1. Blow shadow refuge to reset my initiative
2. Trade damage shot for shot style and lose.
I feel like death lotus is gimping thief, it does mainly condition damage on a burst weapon set. death lotus is basically eating my initiative alive and putting me in a burstless state causing me to shadow refuge to reset. Look at the necro, their skills and utilities synergizes so well.
Did A.net design death lotus so I could blow all my initiative, and do no damage as a burst thief? Let’s face it, condi thief runs caltrops on dodge and pistol/dagger 90% of the time, and for them dagger dagger isn’t nearly as good as short bow for the mobility and aoe condition. My thoughts on a reasonable change to death lotus:
1. Change the bleed to poison
2. Reduce the overall condition damage
3. Increase the death lotus solid damage
I can’t provide numbers because I don’t know how the damage calculators work for this game, but overall I think these changes can provide better synergy rather then feeling useless for using a move solely for 1 mechanic, and with the up coming stealth balance this could be a good way to keep the class good and providing next level players a way to compete, because honestly, why should a burst thief using a burst weapon set be using a condition damage ability to avoid being 1 shot by hundred blades.
Tl;dr I’m asking for a death lotus change(dagger/dagger skill 3), and since your using all your initiative with 2 death lotus, you can easily make it a more bursts ability rather then a condition ability.
(edited by XZERO.3014)
I use death lotus when I don’t have endurance, so I basically sacrifice damage for survivability, and since I’m a burst thief I don’t feel rewarded dumping my initiative into a move that’s completely useless to my build, I wouldn’t mind the traits to diversify the class, but I also wouldn’t mind a trait that makes death lotus do more solid dmg and less condi dmg.. I feel like I have to play condi thief to make good use of death lotus, but then I sacrificed burst etc.
Thief seems like the only class that gets a couple useless skills, just look at necro, axe/focus and sceptre/dagger.. Then a d/d thief gets stealth and strong burst skills, but then you get death blossom.. And I use death blossom.. Anyway I hate to sound like a broken record but I agree with op, the thief has a high skill cap outside of stealth abuse.
Am I the only thief player who WANTS to try and be a fair class to play against?
A.Net is talking about stealth stacking, and I have a problem with them nerfng that, because we are a stealth class, and if we pop out we are revealed, if they decrease stealth stack they might as well get rid of stealth and give us a new mechanic
They are increasing skill cap, and providing counter play. Avoid backstab and when thief comes out of stealth he can’t re stealth. I agree with these changes and I’m a thief main, and don’t make me write an essay about this topic, so ill just say this, in structured pvp I ran a CnD specific build, to keep stealth time to a maximum, and I killed people timing CnD right and never leaving stealth.
My PvE/PvP schedule is going to look like this:
Monday PvE tuesday PvP wednes PvE thursday PvP Friday goof around with buddies saturday SPvP sunday SPvP.
Idk it’ll be something like that, ill be doing an even amount of both lol.
Hey, i just got back from a 3 month break from gw2, and my warrior is lvl 55.
Do we still suck in WvW? I know in SPvP i do great, and PvE i was always the last to die, and i did the most noticeable damage on mobs.
i was thinking about deleting all my characters and transfering to my friends server and making a fresh character with him(thief), but if my warrior is better then a thief in wvw/pve im probably going to just get him to 80 and buy gems for gold and transfer.
for venoms i think a minor passive buff would be great.
An example: Basilisk Venom: Passive: Every 10 attacks you stun a foe for 1 second
Active: Instantly Stun for for 1.5 seconds
Ice Drake Venom: Passive: Every 10 attacks you recover from a condition
Active: Chilled for 1 second.I think making them more like signets would give venoms more use, but plz idrc what you do with the venoms, just make them more practical, it feels like every thief build has to be a cookie cutter, and im a player who likes diversity, and feeling awesome with my unique builds.
your example is not good
Unload spam – number of attacks 8 – cast time 1.75 sec
3 x unload = 5.25 /2 (haste) 2.63 sec ( 2 times bas trigger ) roll for initiative spam 2 more unloads (2 sec stunned) , switch to D/D , use basilik (instant) 1.5 sec more stun, even the strongest bunker is dead
Im just trying to get the idea across, make them apply something ever X amount of hits, it just makes sense. sorry for the abd examples, but they are just examples, the devs can do whatever they want with the venoms, i just think that the way i want venoms changed might make them more viable in arena, im not saying i want the specific changes, im happy with whatever i get, i just dont want to be stuck using the same utilities all the time.

LOL my guilds awesome, thanks for the chuckle trolls.
funny how after school hours i get the random immature comments on my thread.
Before you troll ask yourself, are you mad because your parents never put your picture on the fridge?
Hey Thief community, i’ve spent the last 5 hours playing thief, and so far in SPvP its awesome!
My current main is a Necro(only lvl 32), and i’ve just lost touch with him, mainly because guildies are saying i should be using staff, and its damage makes me want to chop my arm off and huck it out the window.
let me get back on topic. I’m part of a massive PvP guild, which has squads and each squad has a captain, when assigned to your squad(at lvl 80) those are the people you will be doing stuff with in WvW and PvE, currently our guild is short on thieves, and an opportunity for me to make one my main has come up.
I want to run a Burst build, but i also enjoy survival, in SPvP i run a axe/focus Dagger/Dagger spec on my necro, and im almost impossible to kill due to all the siphoning i do, i also hit for around 8k burst damage in SPvP. If i can find a thief build similar to my necro build, or any build that will provide better results then staff(makes me cringe everytime i see the sad damage i shouldn’t be doing) i will most likely re-roll thief.
Is thief the class for me?
(edited by XZERO.3014)
So i just started playing GW2 again, and ive been getting fairly serious with my necro, i have a burst build currently for PvE/WvW but i heard staff is better for WvW and it deals better condition dmg then it does solid dmg.
My question is, does Necro excel better at condition damage then a Elementalist would? I know Epidemic is a strong corruption spell, but outside of that the elementalist seems to have the upper hand(other than the fact that as a condition dmger you want to “Out-Last” your opponent).
So let me just get my topic summed up:
Does Necro scale better than an Elementalist at Conditions PvE/PvP Wise?
I know elementalists do more condition damage but that means nothing if you die in 3 hits.
This topics about D/D Elementalist and Scepter/Dagger and Staff necro.
i guess i should clarify that my interests are:
WvW, and PvE.
Hey so i decided to use Axe/Focus as my main source of burst, but idk what i want my 2nd weapon set too be.
The only options i can think of atm are: Staff, Dagger/Dagger, Wand/Dagger.
a more experienced Axe/Focus necromancer would know, also i am having troubles with my traits, idk if i wanna go 30/20/0/10/10 or if their is a better build atm.
Thx in advance
oh and im running either 1: a Power/Crit/Crit Dmg Build.
and 2:Condition Build.
So i’m running SPvP having fun(dieing a lot but still having fun).
I’m just curious as to what the popular builds are, or what great builds are.
Thx in advance
i forgot to mention i have supply crate.
Right now i’m loving both classes, i’d even say, engineer is more fun.
I started playing GW2 a couple days ago so i dont have much knowledge yet, a guildie shown me SPvP and how to refund n gems n stuff..
I played around with both, I am going to main WvW pvp, since SPvP isn’t really fun imo, however i am now unfamiliar with which class id like to play.
Right now I run a “Kit Swapping” setup, giving me permanent swiftness, as well as swiftness, bleeds, burns, and vulnerability from crits, as well as multiple skills in my arsenal for different situations.
My utility skills are: Grenade Kit, Bomb Kit, Elixer Gun Kit.
My guardian is a pretty straight forward kinda toon, he does a lot of burst dmg, and can take a lot of dmg. Hes definately not nearly as exciting as Engineer but he is still fun.
I guess the main question is: Which class will do the best in WvW and PvE when mastered?
Hello! this will answer your question. Also to all thieves who say “its cause thieves destroy noobs” i gotta tip for you, if you cant 2 shot people with heart seeker, remember you press 5 so you can flee for combo points.
We all know how broken Necromancers were when GW2 was first launched, and they had no quality of life, i remember reading a thread with tons of bugs/problems with the class.
I want to know how Necromancers are right now.
The only time i’m not having fun on my warrior is if im skippin threw a flower patch and 4-5 enemy players just come at me.
Other then that i have 0 problems with the class, i’m easily staying alive in PvE, and in Mist PvP i do really well.
Now in my honest opinion, WvW is like having a Bi-Polar Pregnant Gf, you never know when your going to get zerged and die, but you still leave it up to destiny.
im mostly getting my norn 35 cultural set because it looks pretty cool, and ill use its looks for new sets since i got a lot of those “trasmogrifying” gems.
Hey so im lvl 34, almost 35 and ready to get my first armor set, however it costs 3 gold to get all the pieces, and i only have 1 gold 40 silver, does anyone know a quick way to get 2 gold without buying gold from the gold sellers?
I’ll vouge for necromancer, sure your “direct damage” isn’t as high as anyone else, but if your doing 3k bleed dmg over 7 seconds and another 2k poison damage, pop well of corruption(1.8k dmg + turning boons into conditions) or well of suffering (3k dmg + applying vulnerability) and pop Death Shroud or Lich Form, you can easily watch your opponents hp just melt away, add all the survivability the necromancer has, and you got yourself a killing machine.
Any way this could be viable? I plan to be a Conditionmancer, and i really wouldnt mind using lich form for solid damage.
Im thinking i’d equip all armor with malign/power/toughness, and all accessories would be power/vitality.
Traits would be split between curses/spite/death magic.
Does Feast of Corruptions bonus damage apply per condition, or does it include condition stacks as well, also will it deal the bonus damage with other proffession conditions that the Necro cant apply himself, like the Mesmers Confusion.
Thanks for the answer, at least i can play the class and not be a burden everywhere
This is one of my more favorite class, but i quit playing one because people kept posting about how glitched they were, so i am just wondering if their still pretty much the “least wanted” class for dungeons.
I am not in a “Dominating” WvWvW server, and since our server normally loses, we end up having to pay a lot for repairs.
My suggestion is make armor more durable in WvWvW since your more prone to die in PvP then in PvE.
Thanks for reading my Topic, and maybe i’ll see you on the fields of slaughter, mayhem, and justice!
do you know how hard it is too even land “hundred blades”. Your lucky if some idiot stands in it.
I use bola too make sure i can use it, but still by the time i get to you and use it ill do half the damage i should, it doesn’t need a nerf.
3 heart seekers is epic winning.
Comon bro i got tiger blood!
Good Morning Ragnar Dragonfyre and everyone reading this so far,
Your post pretty much sums it up, however i am not looking for “who can kill the fastest”, i’m just wondering who is better at harassing people at range, then when you need too, switch too your melee and take em out. I’ll mention my likes and dislikes.
Thief Likes:
- Can stealth multiple times for short durations confusing the enemy and sustaining little too no damage
-Can burst enemies down or keep constant ranged dps with initiative
Warrior Likes:
- Can take quite a bit of damage thanks too a high health pool
- Has low cooldowns, high snare durations, and multiple distance closers as well as rolls.
- Can harass with a longbow/rifle quite well.
- Supports allies with battle standards (which is great in WvW)
Thief Dislikes:
- When initiative runs out your helpless and blow cooldowns too survive
- Low hp (16k) and medium armor leaving them vulnerable and easy too slay when their out of stealth.
- Completely mainstream(i dont like being the guy playing the “OP” class)
Warrior Dislikes:
- Ramp up time too gain adrenaline and deal heavy burst.
- I really cant think of any more lol
I guess that says it all, i’ll roll a warrior as my main and maybe thief later on, i like necromancer but their “broken” and not wanted in dungeon groups so i’m waiting for arena too fix that.
also i’m 100% sure if he was a 80 warrior he wouldnt post on warrior forums asking for a nerf, thats just insane.
