sPvP Phantasm Build ?

Thanks for the reply. Really good info.

I’ve been trying the Double Range shatter build, but have been struggling with it if I’m honest. It might be just the set ups and stuff, but it feels like it doesn’t do a great deal of damage (that’s probably just me sucking with it though)

Any tips ?:

I haven’;t played for a while, just came back after like a 10 month or so break. Back when I was playing, the Phantasm build was quite popular, I really enjoyed it, but I’ve noticed it’s not even listed on the metabattle website.

Did something happen to the traits for this build ? I was trying it out earlier in ranked and it was working a treat.

What would GW2 be like with trinity?

Xylith.4873

I personally prefer the holy trinity, the game would need a LOT of rework for it to properly work though.

Now I completely get where people are coming from when they talk about hating the holy trinity, you don’t want to be pigeon holed. I’m sorry but this whole thing about queue times really is a red herring.

What went wrong was ANet got rid of the holy trinity, and didn’t really put anything concrete in place. In Dungeons I don’t even feel part of the group, I’m just another solo guy in there dodging and damaging as much as possible. Encounters aren’t challenging and require bugger all coordination. It’s a Face mash your keys to damage. Profit. You dont even need to talk to the other people in your group, everyone knows it’s a button mash fest. For me, it’s kind of ruined the idea of doing group dungeons.

I personally will be looking forward to playing a MMORPG with a proper defined role system. (Wildstar potentially)

Does ANET have plans..

No one from Anet will listen to you Connie because you don’t know what you’re talking about. Any of a warriors high damage skills are easily telegraphed. And unlike a thief they can’t attack you from an invis state. Warriors got a pretty big nerf last patch, why are whiny little kids like you more rampant on the warrior subforums than ever before?
They’re easy to play, but just as easy to counter. A good warrior will probably own your face in, but a good warrior will still lose to a good mesmer.

Correction: A warrior is roughly as good as a PU condition mesmer, which coincidentally has the same low risk/high reward going for it. To be fair though, one of the characters I play frequently is a mesmer (definitely not condi PU, I would never forgive myself if I played something that easy), and I can usually pick out the real one immediately.

Some tips: they give away their position every time they dodge or cast clones/phantasms, even in stealth, because the vast majority of these spawn next to them, and in the case of dodging, on top of them. It also helps to use your environment, as clone A.I. sucks, and the clones won’t follow you down the slightest drop, so jumping up and down a ledge basically renders all melee clones useless. If you can LoS while doing it the ranged illusions will attempt to take the shortest path to reach you, around rocks and stuff, making them pretty much useless as well.
I had some fun times earlier today on skyhammer trolling one by using the jump pads.

I have a much harder time with, well, pretty much any warrior except one that just sits still and takes it, or tries to 2v1.

So while you’re running the illusions round, a good mesmer has probably buggered off and is capping a point while you’re distracted. Mesmer are by far the hardest class to fight in a 1 on 1 situation. You say “trolling one” are you sure ?

Anything to improve the quality of Anet’s flagship PvE content initiative/concept is a good thing.

If there needs to be a hiatus to give the content more time for polish, I’m thankful Anet’s willing to do it.

I pray this becomes a trend.

The hiatus won’t be for polishing content, it’s because people will be, rightfully so, taking time off over Christmas.

What world do you live in where Christmas goes through most of January?

I’ll take a little of column A with my column B.

One where apparently you have no idea what it’s like working as a Software Developer. They won’t get back and immediately release content. They could potentially be part way through development, getting back will be a final push and then testing. Or they will have finished pretty much all of it, but require time to test new content and I dare say a slight bit of regression if they have time. Depends on how they run with their Development Life Cycle.

It’s the holidays, friend! The teams need a break to spend time with loved ones just like all of us. It’s good for people who are so passionate about their work (I have seen many a dev post here on the weekends when most of us are off work) to step back and get sometime away so they can be constructively critical about the work they do. Sometimes we need time to refresh and get away. Sometimes it’s good for players to take a break as well to get some perspective about the fact that it’s just a game and we shouldn’t take it so seriously as to lose sight that people need a holiday every so often.

^^^^^^^^^ This!

They deserve a break and it’s nice for the players not to feel rushed to do the current content (Wintersday) at a time when a lot of us will be spending time away from the game enjoying the Christmas season, family and friends.

Merry Christmas!

Time away from the game? Dunno about you, but this will be my time WITH the game. I barely get chance while working and seeing friends and family normally.

I wouldn’t expect anything over Christmas. I work as a Software Developer and we have a “Code Freeze” when we hit December. Everything starts to wind down as there will be the majority of staff on holiday. There will probably be a skeleton crew, but they’ll be working on maintenance of servers and bug fixing, not new content.

Now that’s not a bad idea! I’m going to give Sword / Pistol & Staff a try.

Just had a quick play.

What about a 10/20/15/25

Took 10 out of domination and put it into chaos (from my previous build) adding Illusionary defense (I was trying to play around to see if I could get 20 in chaos too, but will miss some phantasm damage) that way gaining protection with regen constantly, increasing toughness overall and having effectively 9% reduced damage with illusionary defense.

I use a very similar build, but I don’t bother with the Scepter as it feels a bit out of place (Scepter to me is a condition or shatter spec weapon if anything)

Sword / Pistol & Greastsword

20/20/5/25/0

I find the GS is excellent when you have a bit of breathing room. 1 Can put out moderate damage at range, 2 is pretty decent , 3 is great for removing a boon from an enemy (Especially when they are trying to get away with swiftness) 4 is… well iZerker is pretty sweet and 5 is great for interrupts (Excellent if the enemy is about to finish off a downed allie)

I take the 5 in chaos for the extra regeneration and toughness. Also to say the GS has no defensive use is nonsense, the knockback on it’s 5 has saved my kitten so many times (not to mention the amount of times I’ve knocked people off ledges )

I didn’t think the mantra removed that many? and when cast you only have two shots with it until requiring a re-cast of the thing (unless traited)

Untraited the mantra removes 2 × 2 conditions on a 20s cd. The field removes 5 (or 6?) on a 40s cd.
The mantra casts 2,75s but you can move while you’re doing it and it can be cast before meeting an enemy. The field is limited to the targeted area where you have to stay in.
You can split the 2 uses of the mantra while you can’t do that with the field but the enemy sees it.
Mantra can remove 4 condis in ~1s, field needs a little longer but does more.

Ahh fair enough. I didn’t think Null Field had a limit to the amount removed? Maybe I should take another look at my condition removal

I mainly liked nullfield because I tend to either pop it when I’m fighting on a point (against a bunker) or if I’m getting conditioned up, nullfield, decoy, stand in it.

I’ll have a look at trying Mantra instead of Nullfield.

Illusionary defender: “who cares about an extra 40k hp?” -a year later- “Oh”. I use it more often than not in fractals.

The only ones I liked from the start are decoy blink mirror images and signet of illusions. Although im starting to very much doubt mirror images… It just doesnt do enough for the massive cooldown.

I never thought of using portal in pvp combat, but now I love it :P

Mantra of resolve: “nullfield strips boons, cleanses more from yourself and allies.” -since 2 months- “omg nullfield is so useless compared to the resolve mantra”. For shatter I always run decoy blink mantra of resolve now. Before the mantra, I had to inmedatally disengage whenever i get hit by pin down or sword throw… Now I dont ;D.

Also, in solo q, whenever I died, conditions always were the top 2 of y death breakdown. Direct damage just doesnt seem to touch me O.o

If only they gave shatter more condi removal… Maybe put illusionary persona to master tier instead of grandmaster. It would let us go 10 inspiration.

Nullfield so useless compared to resolve mantra? I’ve found nullfield invaluable in PVP, especially against bunker char’s. Guardian for example with his “Thou shalt not move me” with all his boons, nullfield down, threat eliminated.

Very nice build. I tried it out in sPVP last night and was happily surprised at how well it worked. Especially against Bunker’s. Incredibly fast DS generation, really good damage. I dunno about using it in WvW, but sPVP it works a charm. I was fighting a bunker guardian, rooted him in place, dropped all 3 wells on him and preceeding to dismantle him very quickly. May have to try some variations on this, but currently this is my most enjoyable build to play with on Necro.

“Great Damage” depend on what he would consider “Great” He could have been saying he was doing “Great Damage” considering he’s not traited for it. Healway is a great build, and works well in small groups too, but you won’t really be doing much damage at all.

Soloing people as it is with a Guardian takes a while (unless they are a full on glass cannon, which is funny to fight) in fact I’ve had a few fights where both my opponent and I haven’t really been able to do much to each other.. so we just /waved and moved on.

You want to be able to put out some damage while alone? I think you’re looking in to the wrong spec’s if that’s really what you’re after. Those sort of specs will have you dueling for days, or until someone receives reinforcements. Your damage is going to be quite low , especially if you’re using clerics.

In response to your question about whether you can stay in the thick of it at 80.

The short answer, Yes.

The long answer. As a Guardian you’ll often notice you’re actually the last one standing in just about every situation. If you’re good at timing your dodges then you’re laughing. I run a staff as my switch weapon and a GS or Hammer as my main. When things get hairy I switch to my staff and trigger the 4th ability. Due to the awesome amount of might stacks, it procs Altruistic Healing like crazy! Not to mention the final heal at the end. I’ve been nearly dying, used that and been back in the fight within 2 seconds.

You’ll also end up putting Regen on quite a lot so you have a consistent trickle of healing. As long as you dodge in the right places you won’t ever need to disengage from melee. Good thing too, because our ranged weaponry is severely limited.

Also while leveling it doesn’t hurt at all to take some points out of your survivability traits and put a bit more in Radiance or something, if you want the extra damage. Guardian was by far the easiest profession to level in my opinion.

Even when you go Guardian support, the method of supporting can be through damaging.

Your GS has a combo field that will give people retaliation, every time it’s applied it triggers AH. Even on yourself. Not to mention if you use Empowering Might you can proc that, which in turn triggers AH healing , depending on how many people get the buff (up to 5) next up is your shield, the 4 on it provides protection for everyone… because you’re applying a buff you are also triggering AH, again that’s more healing. All of this is done while damaging. You’re buffing people, damaging and healing yourself. In my opinion, that’s a hybrid.

There are a lot of people that seem to think Guardians have this full on traditional role of support. GW2 with the Guardian is all about being a Hybrid, you provide damage support which is actually your way of using the rest of your traits and abilities for support. Having a fairly high crit chance is advantageous for the Guardian if you’re using Empowering Might. You provide more damage support, and in turn proc empowering might, which is stacking for everyone to provide the whole group more damage… and AH healing.

Shout’s will of course also trigger AH, but I think you’re wrong in thinking they are the primary method for AH. My empowering might provides more sustained healing then my shouts.

Also if you’re looking at doing WvW, then I’d seriously consider running a staff. Line of warding is incredibly useful, and the heal on the staff stacks multiple stacks of might. With AH, the heal will pretty much full heal you.

It’s not terrible, but don’t get your hopes up for dealing massive damage. Guardians can put out fairly consistent damage, but you sure as hell aren’t going to be worrying anyone with your “High DPS”.

Guardians strength is in their ability to do a bit of everything. We can provide some damage support while buffing and healing everyone. Warrior’s can kind of do it with a shout heal spec, but I’ve played both at 80 and found Guardian’s : A) Way more fun. B ) Better at supporting. That’s my opinion.

We can do a bit of damage, but it’s not that amazing. I enjoy doing my job of providing lots of buffs, condition removal and in general being a pain in the kitten for other classes to fight.

The fastest clears I’ve had in CoF speed runs are with 3 Warriors, 1 Mesmer & 1 Guardian. Everyone forgets that Tome of Wrath can provide Quickening, in fact you can use it twice if you time it right.

Guardian damage isn’t bad, to be fair I’m being a bit harsh comparing it against a Warrior… the only class that comes close to Warrior’s damage is a Thief. Just keep in mind when you play a Guardian, people aren’t bringing you for your imba DPS. They want you for the support you provide and the utility you bring to the group.

I thought exactly the same as you, while levelling the Guardian I thought “Wow I’m absolutely wrecking things with this guy, I bet he does loads of damage at 80” then you hit 80 and realise it’s not the case… at all. Use the first build I gave you. Pure of Voice, Altruistic Healing, Empowering Might, Shout cooldown trait, toughness in to precision trait, remove a condition every 10 seconds trait. Think that’s about it.

Their damage is OK, but nothing compared to say a Warrior or Thief.

You get your damage from the berserker stats, the traits balance your survivability out. If you’re looking for more damage then you might want to look at a different profession. You can go glass cannon if you want, but that’s just stupid on a Guardian IMO.

I would make a slight change.

0/5/30/30/5

You want the virtues to give the buffs when they are activated. The buffs are really nice, and it will trigger Altruistic Healing.

Bare in mind you won’t do that great a damage compared to other classes. I run 0/5/30/30/5 Shout Guardian using Berserker gear for PVE Dungeons, swapping to Clerics / Knights when I need some more survivability. To be honest though, if you have Empowering Might with Altruistic Healing, you will be triggering the heals quite a lot which will give you a slow steady rate of healing.

I’ve not had any problems at all with my survivability while running that trait spec with Berserker gear. As with all things, knowing when to roll can save your kitten so much.

Currently that’s my go to spec for Dungeons and Soloing. WvW it kind of works, but you would want to look at using Clerics / Knights instead. In WvW I focus a lot more on condition removal, healing and soaking up some damage.

Also, in WvW I would take the 5 from Radiance and stack it in to Virtues – 0/0/30/30/10. Then take the ground targetting consecration trait so you can place wall of reflection. WoR is absolutely evil in WvW, coupled with the staff’s line of warding, it’s quite amusing.

Hello,

For starters I would probably say look at getting clerics as opposed to knights and valkyrie if you want to do WvW, or a mix of Knights and Clerics.

When I’m playing with my guild in our WvW events, we have a large chunk of our guardians (pretty much all of them) as healing / buffer Guardians. From what I’ve seen this is pretty common.

1. AH is a fantastic trait. You don’t need the weapon for it to be useful, activating your virtues and shouts will trigger it.

2. No, HP isn’t entirely a waste and in fact some Guardians swear by it.

3. Sigils can vary. I was using one for removing boons from a player and on my staff a switch to increase in endurance, I’m still experimenting with these though and have swapped sigils quite a few times.

Yes, Empowering Might will trigger Altruistic Healing.

It;‘s really nice, because you can stack precision which naturally gives you more damage because of the higher chance to crit, but it also means you’ll proc empowering might which gives everyone might (more damage), but also healing you per person that gets the might!

This happened to be yesterday. I’m defending my guild’s keep, ranger starts firing at me while I’m on the wall. I laugh, switch to rifle with full adrenaline, Kill shot, followed by my 3 (bad that I don’t remember it’s name, I just know it as the “Repeatedly shoot for nice damage”) He was down so fast while I had the majority of my health. Huge cast time? Not really. Huge build up? Nope. Roots them in place? Yea sure, but that’s not a massive deal with this ability. Cooldown isn’t that bad, at all.

The cast time is long enough for anyone to dodge, unless they suffer from slow reaction, or just aren’t paying attention.

It doesn’t matter how many skills you spam to get full adrenaline, as you’ll still have to wait for that cooldown.

Yes, the skill is broken because of the damage it deals in WvW, and does in fact need to be toned down, along with 100B to keep intact with the PW, HS, and BS nerfs thieves got because of their damage.

The damage certain skills deal is indeed ludicrous, I agree, but the core mechanics are fine as is.

The CD isn’t that long. Like 10 seconds? 12? That’s not exactly long. The 20k damage you see in those videos, i’ve not got close to that yet, highest I’ve hit is 12k (my gear is pretty much full exotics with 40% increase crit damage)

If they nerf the HB damage, then they need to do something about the mobility. The skill is so easily dodged its ridiculous. You have to specifically use bull charge, frenzy and HB which in fact leads you open to a LOT, making you feel like a one trick pony. If they nerf the damage on HB, they need to make it more mobile.

Will it please anyone? NOPE!

Just look at the other forums (specifically thief). Nerf one thing being kittened about, and people come up with another…the cycle continues. It’s never ending.

No one is ever happy in this generation. It’s pathetic!

I for one am quite pleased as is…and thank ANet for providing me with such a great entertaining product!

Heaven forbid they are using an iterative software development life cycle. All that feedback.

I do agree though that people will find things to nit pick constantly, but that’s kind of the idea with developing software for customers. You constantly improve based on feedback, it will never be right, no software ever will be (or rarely) so you keep improving.

Xylith.4873

Clearly not. Some warrior asked me how much damage I crit and I proudly told him 2k and sometimes 3k thinking I was doing pretty well. He then told me that my damage was horrible and compared his warrior abilities to mine.

Basically warrior abilities do 3-5x as much damage as their ranger counterparts.

a warrior posted a video of them doing 15-20k crits consistently on their warrior with a rifle (killshot). but still… The best we do is with a full rapid fire that crits… and that’s MAYBE 10k (over entire channel).

Kill shot is a burst skill, it has a huge kitten cast time, huge kitten ramp up time, roots them in place while they are charging it, and the CD isn’t that great either (for the weakest version, not the full power 20k version) so god i would HOPE they can deal more damage with that skill then we can with our freaking 2 on a longbow.

After checking the wiki there is a 10s CD on the kill shot skill itself, which isn’t that bad, but you need to attack 10 times for the WEAKEST version of the skill to be used (by attack it means 10 skills, not 10 hits) and if you want a full powered shot that’s 30 skills that need to go off for that 20k, so yeah, have fun building that up so you can get a shot off on someone that’s either immobilized, not at the computer, or CCed by someone other then you because otherwise you should be able to dodge or reflect that skill easily.

Huge cast time? Not really. Huge build up? Nope. Roots them in place? Yea sure, but that’s not a massive deal with this ability. Cooldown isn’t that bad, at all. 10 skills to charge it? Lol no. I can nearly charge it from using 4. I take it you’ve never played a Rifle warrior. Our 3 is a NASTY rapid fire high damage ability, this itself will do like 1 stage – 1 and a half stages of adrenaline. Also we have a heal that fills the adrenaline guage. So that’s 1 skill. Also a sigil that fills it. That’s one skill.

Where the hell do you get your numbers from? 30 skills before you get a full powered version? What planet are you on? It’s nowhere near that number AT ALL. As i’ve said it’s more like 4. Or even 1 if you use a heal or signet. Please GTFO because you clearly have absolutely no idea what you are talking about.

Show the A-Net team some respect!!!

And i think the whole community should show A-Net some respect. Without them you wouldn’t be even playing this game.
Now image if you are working on the class fixes, and whole class community is insulting you and demanding something, you yet cannot, but want to provide. I think anybody would say kitten this kitten and just for sake of it, would not work on those fixes anymore.

Also anyone who wants to argue :“Jon Peters said its gonna be on Nov 15Th anahshahasddsghahgdashgaggahgdsgdhasgsdhasd” then that person has to realize that A-Net aren’t group of demigods. They people. And people sometimes don’t meet deadlines. Sometimes then can’t keep up the promises. I bet anyone of you crying kitten was late to finish some work, sometime in your life. So shut up about A-net being late. I pretty sure they will provide us with the fixes you all so much desire, but everything needs time to be done.

Excuse me? We should show Arena Net some respect because without them we wouldnt be playing it? LOL

I think you’ve mixed things up a bit here. Without US they wouldn’t even be a kittening company. They need consumers to buy their stuff otherwise they wouldn’t even exist. Good luck being a business without a customer base.

I actually work as a developer, and we have a kind of a rule, DO NOT promise stuff that you can’t guarantee. All it does is piss your customers off. Whenever I’m developing content and we get asked by customers, or internally “When is this going to be done” we NEVER EVER give a date. I would only ever say “Well I’m working on it, but I can’t give you a confirmed date yet until I know for certain it’s ready to roll out”

Yea sure, sometimes developers won’t hit deadlines, in fact it happens all the time, but we don’t go addressing the community hyping them up essentially insinuating that something is going to be coming out on a date when it’s not. Bad move.

I'll let this slide and here's why.

I find it funny how people are moaning about new gear tier’s. I’m more concerned with the complete lack of balancing and bug fixing the games receiving. They are a money grabbing games company that are pushing for more broken content rather then fixing their old stuff… because in their eyes the time and effort doesn’t translate to money, don’t trust anything they say. Have people not learnt this by now?

When is the next balance patch?

I wouldn’t expect anything until January. The team will be busy working on testing/implementing Christmas holiday stuff next month. After that, who knows.

They’ll be working on that at the moment. I would much much much rather they prioritize bug and balancing, rather then bringing out new content. Fix the kitten you already have. I know they’ll have different teams working on balance and new content, but have a shake up and move more people in to balancing.

But I’m sure I’m not alone when I say that it should really not take you over a month to come out with the amount of fixes and balance changes that you inevitably did.

“It shouldn’t take you over a month?” You know this how?

Sorry, I’m as annoyed as the lack of changes as many people are here, but this statement…this “it shouldn’t take you that long to make changes!” attitude annoys me even more.

I’m a programmer. Often, when I talk to my boss who isn’t as familiar with programs, he mentions things like “Hey, can you implement this new feature? It’s pretty simple. Shouldn’t take too long right?” And the answer is almost always no. He doesn’t know the process that goes into the design, creation, implementation, and testing of code. So what he thinks is very simple, in reality can be very difficult to implement.

Same thing with these developers. These developers don’t simply go “Oh, rangers are underpowered, lets give shortbows a 10% damage increase.” I am pretty certain they have to debate the merits of the buff, its impact on various aspect of gameplay, discuss with programmers the possibility of implementing these changes, testing while fine-tuning the changes, etc…But the thing is, no one here knows what this process is exactly.

Since you don’t know what this process entails, please don’t make silly assumptions like “oh only 15 changes? That shouldn’t take a month to implement!”

Complain about the changes? Or the lack of? Get frustrated that the changes promised weren’t implemented? Perfectly fine. But to expect certain amount of things to be done in a certain period of time WITHOUT knowing the process behind it is…very silly.

I too am a programmer, and as you’ll know, if their programmers were worth their salt they would have set the environment up so that it can be easily tweaked for balance changes later on.

You make a valid point. Management have a habit of expecting things to be done very quickly, when in reality it takes a lot longer.

I’m just confused about why they haven’t addressed problems that have been consistently expressed by multiple players. It also can be difficult to “Balance” changes, but surely after the statement, and after all the threads from unhappy players you would have thought they would have rather over compensated then under compensated.

ANet really need to get their priorities right. Putting 2 dev’s on active balancing is a stupid idea. The customers don’t give a crap about “New content” if you aren’t fixing the game.
