$30 for a native debian/ubuntu-centric client would be a steal. I’d honestly pay in the region of $100-150, which is about how much it would cost me to buy Windows. I would see buying a Linux client as paying ransom to escape Windows forever.

Also, maybe we could have a survey in game about that instead of just speculating based on who’s the most visible on the forums, right?

Finally someone with the actual problem.

How do you deal with spiders making up a huge portion of core content and why is the mount the line for you?

Actually the fear is triggered when the spider looks too realistic and/or is too big. As long as it stays small or doesn’t enter into the realistic category, I can deal with it.

In the GW2 core, some rare vets really meet that requirement. The black widow pet doesn’t trigger any fear because she is not big enought (but I do find it very repulsive).

In the past I played Warhammer Online and the boss I hated the most because I spend the whole fight looking at the screen from the side was a giant spider in the Lost Vale

Anyway, as I stated before, I don’t see why the mount couldn’t be introduced because of arachnophobia, as long as you can disable the sight of it. I mean they did that with special effects already even if the reason why they did it is not the same.

never mind that it is ridiculous to punish everyone just to cater to people with irrational fears. whats next, do we get rid of the awesome mesmer / necro couple because some people are homophobic? what about racist grandmothers who play guildwars who are deathly afraid of non-whites?

for the record, i had such a grandmother, who played GW2 almost until she passed away, and she would literally rage/fear log if a black character joined her party, though for reasons i dont understand, asura’s with the giant afro hairstyle were okay.

Wow. To compare people with fear to homophobia or intolerance that’s… quite horrible instead. You’re a horrible person.

Arachnophobia is a thing, yes. Getting anxiety over a 3D fictitious representation of a spider? Not so much. The people who do claim to be triggered by such things aren’t really triggered, they’re just attention-seeking [insert the other word for kittens here] with a victim complex.

You obviously don’t know what you’re talking about and you’re really lucky to not be affected by it at all. Even some pictures posted here are affecting me. Hopefully, they are small enough for me to avoid looking at them for too long.

But to be honest, I don’t care about people having an ugly spider mount as long as:
1. I get a graphical option to see something else instead (a scorpion, a gecko, a beetle or even a pink flying pig would do)
2. That option is enabled by default or at least I get a popup to ask me if I want to enable it the first time it would be added to the game

But the reason it’s not in the game yet is because they want to make sure they include everything in the builds, including weapons and armor, which gets complicated.

Maybe they should play their own games first. In GW1, saving builds and switching gear wasn’t the same thing but both actions were actually quite easy. I really hope they will do something similar. It has been bugging me since they launched the game :/

Loved it in GW1. Would love it even more in GW2, particularly with the necessity for very different builds between Raids, general PVE, and players just wanting to customize for fun.

Being able to ping your build for others to see, load, or save (as well as for yourself) would be amazing.

Thoughts?

I’ve been wondering since the beginning how come they didn’t implemented this yet… Another thing that has been bugging me is the lack of ability to come back to an instance just after a crash/disconnect. That was something that existed in GW1 and that was way ahead of the other games

Not so happy with the new traits and builds system, anyone else?

I’m not really happy with that either. I still need to test it more of course to be really sure but it really reminds me what happened to the specialization system of a famous mmo when they released an expansion with pandas…

I mean, now you have to spend every point in a specialization. To me, it is less diversity choices in the builds. Maybe it is intended to be for young kids or people not really smart :/

Also, I believe the new interfaces for the specialization system are confusing. Too much icons everywhere…

Performance issues in WvW after Update

in Bugs: Game, Forum, Website

So along with all the balance changes and stability stuff, we also got:

The number of votes required to kick a party member has been increased to 50% of the party. As an example, in parties of five, three votes will be required.

WvW map completion is no longer a requirement for a character to achieve World Completion, and these maps no longer award map completion rewards.

Added an Enable First-Person Camera check box. To enter first-person mode, zoom in again while at minimum camera zoom.

Fixed an issue in which players could take repeated falling damage when running down steep inclines.

Plus new black lion weapons that look kind of cool, AND IF THATS NOT ENOUGH YOU GET NEW FACES! (sort of sarcastic on that, though I guess rp’ers will like new options)

But no, just because YOU dont like the stability change it makes it the “worst update in gw2 history”? Riiiiiiiiiiiiiiiight

Yup, it is indeed the worst patch in the GW2 history (at least since they released the game), but because it is completely broken; it’s like they pushed it to production without testing a kitten thing o_O

Just look at how much bugs are collected right now: https://forum-en.gw2archive.eu/forum/support/bugs/Bugs-from-16th-Patch

Seriously, how come the quality of this patch is so low?! It isn’t that bad usually, and most of the time it even goes smoothly!

Vanquish, the hard mode and the elite zones?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Yunjii Sun.3512

Yunjii Sun.3512

Putting 2 and 2 together here.

I heard that one of the reasons why Anet implemented mega-servers were beacuse of two things:
-Reducing strain on servers (fewer versions of maps need to be made and maintained- rather than many low population shards, there will be few high population shards)
-Keeping the maps well populated (increasing player satisfaction).

If instanced vanquishing areas were introduced, this work would be undone.

It made sense in GW1 as all maps were instances anyway. Also, from what I’ve heard, mob roaming AI is very different in GW1 and GW2, it would be very difficult to implement because of this (GW1 had groups of mobs roaming, GW2 have lots of singular mobs roaming).

I was thinking of doing it with map instances of course. I mean, we are already doing it with the season 2 of the living story and the whole personal story anyway! Maybe it doesn’t have to be done on the entire maps but by chunks?

There is quite a difference in supporting small, short instances such as PS/LS and area vanquishes. I seem to remember that GW1 vanquishes (for normal sized areas) would take 1-2 hours to clear. From what I understand, GW2 maps are significantly larger and have more foes and more spread out. Vanquishing a map would take much longer than in GW1: this means more server space will have to be dedicated to instances than in GW1 too. Server space costs money!

Another huge factor is that GW2 has a Z axis, meaning that there is even more area for foes to inhabit. It would be easy to miss foes on top of vistas, JPs or in caves.

Also, remember than GW1 had foes marked out on the radar as red dots? This made vanquishing large areas substantially easier because you wouldn’t miss out on mobs. Without this feature in GW2, expect vanquishing to be frustrating and laborious.

Your suggestion of having small areas to vanquish would be good. I think the most fitting areas for Vanquishing are dungeon instances. Party members could interact with a challenge mote at the start (just after picking a path) which would start an event in the dungeon e.g. “Foes Vanquished: 23 out of 112” with one of those orange fill bars. Once all foes have been killed, you get a jiggly chest that contains some rare loot and possibly dungeon tokens. The amount of loot depends on how many foes are in that instance.

Dungeons tend to be quite linear- it would be less easy to miss foes in there.

I would also assume that it is within A-net’s power to be able to host more dungeon instances fairly easily for what they are. They must be less of a “server drain” than whole map shards.

This is why I started my post with “Dear Anet” actually: I mean if I could send them an email, I totally would!

I’m not talking about bringing everything back like it was in their previous game, but I believe that the very same company that had such good ideas before should be able to find out something that would satisfy both the servers constraints and their long time fans.

The most important here is to tell them that we remember what they did before and that we would be pleased by something as good.

Vanquish, the hard mode and the elite zones?

And how are they going to implement Hard mode and Vanquish in a game where the maps are open world and enemies respawn?

And how do they implement the personal story?

PS instances are small and easy to balance on top of megaservers, entire instanced maps for 1-6 players would not be so small.
If you want “hard” mode, go farm Orr in blues…

Well, again, maybe they could split the maps, like for missions.

With a good minion master build you can farm orr in blue without problem… Hard mode is not about farming or about stuff. It is about fun and about having another way to play. It is also about horizontal scaling instead of vertical scaling (== you don’t get more powerful; only the challenge increases)

I’d rather see the game using the latest OpenGL so at least everybody including MAC users who also bought the game could finally get some good performances.

Don’t forget that the game is FreeToPlay, so a smaller audience means less money for ArenaNet at the end.

And btw, the better way to end the 10FPS in WvW zergs is to redesign WvW so it would be less about zerking. Yes, it is easier to say than to do, but if you think about it, once you’ll get rid of the GPU/CPU bottlenet, you’ll have the next bottleneck: networking. And neither DirectX nor OpenGL will save you with that.

opengl next has not been release. in fact, it is being shown on march 5

http://schedule.gdconf.com/session/glnext-the-future-of-high-performance-graphics-presented-by-valve

Neither is DirectX 12 :p

And by the way, they are quite equivalent anyway if you believe John Carmack’s words.

direct x 12 will probably be release when windows 10 is out. I believe microsoft been working on it longer than the khoronos group.

It doesn’t matter. Again, gw2 is intended to a larger audience than just the Windows 10 crowd.

I am saying. whatever anet chooses. We will not see the fruition until a long time later.

We still have a roadblock for Mac Apple. They might not implement opengl next. I am bit more optimistic because tim cook is in charged.

You’re right. And that’s why IMO, Anet should focus on better things than DirectX 12.

The problem I see with crafting precursors

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Yunjii Sun.3512

Yunjii Sun.3512

Why do you have to turn this into a negative by assuming this or that? Grow up. All I’m saying is i’d rather see Legendaries be a long term goal rather then something anyone and their mother can do. IMO Legendary weapons are end game events of their own.

Well, you’re right about the long term goal but you’re wrong about the actual legendary being legendary: to use the same words as you, in its current state, “anyone and their mother” can get a legendary because there is no challenge at all! It is all about a stupid grind. Even the dungeons tokens can be done easily since today some people use to pay some others to do the dungeons for them (which is kinda stupid).

Being able to craft precursors can be implemented:
_ as a stupid grind only with no challenge at all, and then it is the same as the actual legendary
_ or as a suite of quests and challenges, and then, I don’t see how “anyone and their mother” could do it

BTW, I’m sorry if I offended you by my message. It wasn’t completely intended. I’m still waiting for you to explain in what world does the actual state of the legendaries “Legendary”. It is just a grind without any challenge of any kind. It just requires patience and regularity.

Doing those ‘challanges’ is the same as putting loud music on and letting your eyes glaze over.

Both are time spent playing a video game. Nothing more, nothing less.

And grinding to get all the T6, the gold and the tokens isn’t the same? :O

The problem I see with crafting precursors

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Yunjii Sun.3512

Yunjii Sun.3512

The problem I see is very simple really, if you can craft precursors you can take the Legendary out of Legendary weapons. Ascended weapons i’m assuming were created for players to be able to craft and compete against players with legendary weapons. Ascended armor on the other hand can be debated but again can be crafted so ALL can make and won’t be an imbalance.

Can you explain what’s so legendary about grinding gold until you can buy a precursor???

A good precursor craft would be much more legendary: you could have to follow a very long quest that would take some time and some skill to complete. That’s better that the stupid “I’ll grind gold until I can make my legendary! Wo0t! 1’m such a sk1ll3d play3r” attitude, IMO.

Taking into account Ascended weapons being able to be crafted Legendary weapons are more of a skin then anything else so I don’t see a problem with them being able to be bought with gems other then being able to change stats i.e power/precision/conditon etc.

And even being able to be bought the price might push some to just work on other things till pre courser pops up.

So if I decided to put $400 of my pay into gems (Yeah, good luck…), bought Twilight, etc. outright… You would consider that a “Legendary”?

How about in game gold? If I put loud music on, my eyes glaze over from farming champions for 10 hours a day, legendary?

Earning an item through meaningful game-play would be “Legendary”. Deciding I had no better use for a portion of my paycheck would not be.

Could pretty much implement a bunch of challenges quite easily without creating additional content..

As a very poor example: Finish every path of every dungeon without a single member of your party dying. Participate in all major meta event world bosses without dying. (yourself). Complete x event, y event, z event chain without failing, or without x % of NPCs dying.

You get the picture.

“I did all this, and this is what I have to show for it. It was challenging, and whilst it took some time, it was far more entertaining than 2300 hours of champion farming.”

Totally

I got a better idea – Legendaries for one-time possible events. Why not commemorate things with a special item? Taking down Mordremoth the first time gives you a particular Legendary weapon, choose which one you want out of a set of like-themed skins. “Mordrem Tendril Staff” anyone? “This still-squirming vine was trimmed from the Elder Dragon Mordremoth during a heated battle.”

I like the way you think

if people could craft precursors then “legendaries” would be even less legendary.

I disagree. If precursor craft required some skill to get the ingredients (account bound, NO RANDOM kitten, AND skill required to acquire them through quests and challenges), then you wouldn’t see that much legendaries.

It would mean that if you are unskilled or not skilled enough, you won’t get one even after playing thousands of hours. I think this is what you guys are afraid of. You’d rather ask for the grind to be more long than more difficult. I think that’s sad…

Long story short, Ashley spotted a destabilizing point in the OP’s system and pointed out that he should get that fixed. Why is it so wrong of her to help someone create a stable system? Please explain that.

Listen. I know Ashley is trying to help. The reason her answer is wrong is because it is basically like saying “go buy a new PC”. If you don’t understand why it is wrong, there is nothing more I can explain to you. No offense.

So what’s the alternative? Ashley saying “we’ll work on it”, knowing full well that the OP has an unstable system that’ll most likely never be able to run GW2 without some modifications, no matter how they patch the game?

Or, if I phrase it differently – if you were Ashley, having spotted the reason why the OP cannot enjoy the game, what would you have said?

This is not a case of the White Knight Syndrome, it’s a (quite obvious) case of honesty and integrity.

So you are telling me that all the people that are complaining of crashes on the forums lately, and they are a lot, they all have an instable system? Come on, be serious…

I can imagine that an unstable system can make things worse but the fact is that there is a stability problem with the last versions of the client and it would be dishonest to deny it.

What about those guys? https://forum-en.gw2archive.eu/forum/support/tech/Since-last-update-a-lot-of-client-crashes ; they are all running a 64bits Windows.

What about that one? https://forum-en.gw2archive.eu/forum/support/tech/Game-crash-problems ; Is he running a 32bits windows?

What about those? https://forum-en.gw2archive.eu/forum/support/tech/Crashing-due-to-a-Invalid-Character-Motion ? Those? https://forum-en.gw2archive.eu/forum/support/tech/CharMotion-has-invalid-matrix-crash

@everyone:

Also, OP is posting in the Tech Support section of the forum, which means he has a good reason to do so: he can’t enjoy the game because of technical problems. He is not criticizing your beloved game, so stop going all white nights here please…

While the client supports 32-bit versions of windows, with up to 4gb of RAM, using more than 4gb RAM (8gb in this case) does cause instability, not only with the OS, but with programs as well. My guess is that the client automatically installs as 32-bit in a 32-bit environment, and having the excess RAM is causing the instability. Upgrading to a 64-bit OS will not only fully utilize the amount of RAM available, but will use a 64-bit version of the client as well, which is able to fully support the extra RAM and won’t have the instability issues.

Except that here Guild Wars 2 is crashing, not Windows. My point is that they are saying that they officially support that configuration; so telling people to go buy a new OS is not an acceptable answer.

“So if you really support 32-bits Windows as the minimal requirement, you can’t tell people to go upgrade for a 64-bits PC with 8 GB RAM.”

People should not be installing a 32 bit OS if they have more than 3.5 gig (3 gig realistically) of RAM or installing more RAM than that if they have a 32 bit OS. It’s just wasted and might cause issues.

That’s true if the PC is brand new. But considering the minimal requirements, the PC could have been sold under Windows XP and you know that most of XP were 32 bits.

It is true that it is wasted. It is true that it might cause an issue. But again, they claim to support that configuration.

And by the way: an acceptable answer would be something like: “Our developers are currently working to fix those issues. We apologize blablabla”

Same, I’m having this problem for almost 2 days now and couldn’t play the game well because of the crashes.

This and

Bump, over a third of everyone in each team I’ve played in in the last 20 matches are freezing and lagging including me.

This.

It’s been a few weeks now, and I never had that before since September 2012… It is happening with GW2 only.

Hey there,

The issue here is your 32-bit operating system. You’ve got 8 GB of RAM in your system, however, due to the limitations of 32-bit operating systems you are only really using about 3.5 . In order to make full use of the RAM in your system and to avoid these crashes, I’d advise upgrading to a 32-bit operating system.

Your only other option would be to try tweaking your graphics options down a bit to alleviate some of the crashing.

Hi Ashley, and wait… I’m kinda confused right now. If I go on the official website, I can see this (http://buy.guildwars2.com/store/gw2/en_EN/html/pbPage.buyguildwars2):

Windows Minimum System Requirements

Windows® XP Service Pack 2 or better
Intel® Core™ 2 Duo 2.0 GHz, Core i3, AMD Athlon™ 64 X2 or better
2 GB RAM
NVIDIA® GeForce® 7800, ATI Radeon™ X1800, Intel HD 3000 or better (256MB of video RAM and shader model 3.0 or better)
25 GB available HDD space
Broadband Internet connection
Keyboard and mouse

So The minimal system requirements is 2 GB RAM. Plus it is possible to retrieve a 32-bits game client for Windows. So you do support 32-bits Windows.

So if you really support 32-bits Windows as the minimal requirement, you can’t tell people to go upgrade for a 64-bits PC with 8 GB RAM. That is not an acceptable answer. Or maybe you should remove those requirements from your website and from Guild Wars 2 boxes…

Also, the game used to work great before the Wardrobe patch. Now it is just constant crashes and massive lag…

Look, I know that developers are working hard; I’ve been there before and I know how it can be, but this is definitely an issue they should fix. Its priority should be higher than it appears to be right now, especially if you look at all those threads about crashing and lag issues.

Thank you for your consideration.

There are no lucky or bad luck accounts who comes up with this crap? It’s called rng. What exactly does a net have to gain by going around and randomly lowering an accounts luck like you state? That’s right nothing

Read what I kitten link https://forum-en.gw2archive.eu/forum/game/crafting/Official-Response-Drop-Rate-of-Legendary-Precursors/first, scroll down 1st page till u see a mod post. If they openly admin rng might not been so rng, I think there might been other unknown glitches that they’re might not be aware about thats handing out better loot for some account over another. I think anet needs to reevaluate their whole loot system.

Don’t bother: some people are just white nights like some others are haters. I don’t even understand why they keep posting just to talk about tinfoil hats… If you’re not interested by the subject of the thread, you can just read another one or just enjoy the game, right?

Unless it’s intended, few people geting good loot and bringing it into economy while others have to buy gems and convert them to gold to be able to afford anything.

This.

I don’t believe in a broken RNG; since they hired an economist, I’d rather believe that it is working as intended.

So basically ANet is evil? Oh ok.

Evil? No. I mean they have to make money.

I just used the login screen as a background, but I had to use different techniques (playing with color filters, using levels of gray, etc) depending of what character I was cropping. It was especially difficult with my necro since she is so white.

I just took a screenshot of all my characters on the login screen, then in-game next to a wall so I could resize them. The hard part (for me) was to crop around each character. The rest is kinda easy: I did that on opengimp and used some filters to create that pencil look.

My God… You should really stop talking about stuff you obviously don’t understand: you’re embarrassing yourself.

Seriously, open some computer book or just don’t talk. I’m truly sorry if my words are offending to you but it really feels like when you’re talking about grown up stuff with a friend and that a kid just trying to enter the conversation saying kids stuff.

I won’t enter the debate Windows vs. Linux vs. MacOS here and I won’t answer you since a lot of people gave you good answers already; I’m just gonna stop there and answer to the initial post:

About SteamOS and Gw2, I (sadly) don’t think it will be made any time soon. ArenatNet said that they were using a heavily modified Gw1 engine, which is relying on DirectX a lot. If they would have to port the game natively, they would have to rewrite a part of the engine using OpenGL. And I’m not even talking about other Windows API :/

I think that Arkham Creed.7358 is actually right on one point: ArenaNet cares only about the majority and if the majority of their player base is running Windows, then they won’t bother with something else.
