Also, could we please get a grouping option for medium sized groups in PvE and PvP. Currently organising things as a guild become quite difficult one the number rises above 5.

An option to create a group of up to 15/20 would be fantastic!

So every now and again when I find myself doing a late night on Guild Wars I sometimes head into WvW to disrupt some Dolyak supply chains.

Recently the server I’m on (Gunnars Hold) has been pitted against the likes of Gandra and Riverside. I’ve noticed an odd cycle where Riverside will completely dominate on points when the battle resets at night, but during the day the hold very few of the points.

Upon one of my recent Dolyak excursions I discovered a group of around 30 guild members running around, massacring everyone and capturing all the points – uncontested.

This particular group seemed to also sport a lot of extremely well geared players – likely a result of the east WvW tokens.

Working as intended?

Now this raises into question a couple of things for me. Is this ok? Is it ideal the people can play at anti-social hours to get an advantage to take keeps that were previously hard-fought over?

Should there be a variable population cap which only allows an incremental percentage of difference in the number of plays on each team? If like many nights there are only 3 of us from our server in the battleground, should 10x that number be allowed from another server?

On the flipside I’ve also seen individuals taking keeps (very slowly) at anti-social hours. Should there be a minimum number of players required to capture a location?
I think what got to me most about this, is that the large group of players mentioned above had full PvP sets, which are obviously not hard to come-by when you can capture entire maps at a time. This seemed somewhat unfair to those who play during more populated hours.

There’s a number of points covered here, and there are a number of ideas that could be used to mitigate this if people think it’s a problem, however they all have their drawbacks.

Possible solutions?

Population caps related to the number of players online from all server. For example if there’s 5 online from one server, no-more than 15 from another server can join. (Punishes high pop servers)

Have only eternal battlegrounds open during certain hours – this funnels population into one battleground, but punishes people that play at ‘anti-social’ hours because of their routine or time-zone.

Scale the health and difficulty of mobs with relation to the number of players. Currently only players get a small stats buff when outnumbered, NPCs remain the same.

Drawbacks

There are problems with all of the above suggestions which I also acknowledge. Limiting content for some players for the sake of others is a harsh decision and never a popular one. Equally it’s not fair to punish players based on their decided play-hours or time-zones, and finally there will always be the people that take the game more seriously, and they will always be in a position to cause ‘unfair’ situations.

That said, I feel there should be some discussion around this sort of behaviour and playstyle, to see if there is a way of improving on what’s already a good system.

Well the difference would be that it doesn’t follow a line of targetting. It would work similar to the #3 ability on tridents underwater – instead of following a line and slowly moving it, the ball would come from vertically above onto the opponent, making it much more accurate.

Currently I’m having issues where players/opponents are moving around too much for the orb skill to be effective, unless I’m REALLY close to the fight.

No "real" ranged weapon for Guardians

in Guardian

Posted by: Zelden.6143

Zelden.6143

I think the problem is here that people feel like they have to pick one or the other.

I rock scepter + focus / 2h mace in WvW. But I’ll use both in any fight (except keep assault)

The scepter is fantastic for singling out that target that has strayed out from the main pack. Start loading in that auto-attack before getting in range of the aoe. Then throw on the snare and drop the AoE. I then quickly throw on the focus’s defensive #4 skill and swap into 2hander.

Now comes the pain, the second snare goes down as I then circle around then and smash them back towards friendly lines. At this point I’m probably hitting my healing utilities as the main group turns their attention to me. But it’s too late for poor jimbob who just took a ton of mace to face, he’s back in our group now and a quick circle on the ground followed by some mace nukage see’s his broken skull shattered into tiny pieces on the ground.

Now this doesn’t pull off every time, but I’ve got pretty good at perfecting it and I’ve done similar setups with other combos of weapons.

I think the huge misconception in Guild Wars is that you keep one set of weapons for an entire fight. I’m usually hammering tilde and waiting for the cooldown to come off so I can make use of all my abilities, the scepter is a fantastic addition to the Guardians arsenal, but you’re not going to make the best of it you are standing there waddling your wand and expecting people to fall down dead.

Play about with the mechanics you have available, the traits, the abilities and you’ll soon find the scepter is a fantastic weapon – it’s certainly one of my favourites!

The staff and the guardian

in Guardian

Posted by: Zelden.6143

Zelden.6143

I’ve been loving Guardian play, and I’ve had almost no issues with anything about the class.

One thing that isn’t quite rubbing me right is the staff abilities. Now it may well be personal preference but I thought I’d share my thoughts and see if anyone agrees.

1st ability – An AoE cone, ok it doesn’t feel powerful or anything but it will do
2nd ability – _Maybe I’m missing something here. I’m under the impression I can use this orb to heal allies, the problem is it always wants to fly in a straight line towards enemies. This makes it a little ineffective as if someone is on low health and wants a heal they usually are running AWAY from enemy targets :P _

I feel this could be improved by a few options:

  1. Make the line it runs in a placement similar to aoe.
  2. Allow the orb to fly towards an ally that is targetted
  3. Completely scrap it’s current mechanic. Perhaps instead the orb could drop the sky onto enemies, doing damage to them and healing nearby allies.

3rd ability – no problems here
4th ability – Seems ok, maybe slightly reduce the cast time or allow movement whilst casting?
5th ability – A nice move, though again, reduced cast or movement whilst casting might make it a bit nicer, but not unbalanced.

I really want to like the staff but I feel nerfed when using it compared to other weapon sets.
Anyone else feel the same?

lack of WvW roles and possible solutions

in Guardian

Posted by: Zelden.6143

Zelden.6143

Lack of WvW battle skills

We all know WvW is all about range attacks and melee is kind of hard to deal with, considering this, even though it has been discussed how to make guardian better in wvw, let’s just put them under this topic, here is my suggestions
1. Scepter can slightly hit more
2. Scepter can fire orbs faster instead of more DMG
3. More shield abilities?
4. Being able to teleport on walls and knock ppl down with hammer
5. A spirit bow that we can use for few seconds in utility skills

What do you do on WvW and what r or suggestions?

Disagree on all accounts. Guardians are perfectly capable in WvW, and there are a number of playstyles to replicate this. You can both range and melee in WvW either in large-scale combat or smaller groups. It’s about learning how to do it effectively.

I’m releasing a video tonight (which I’ll post on the forums) which will give some hints and tips on playstyles for WvW, and I’ll talk about my personal WvW playstyle which has worked for me.

If there’s anything you’d like to particularly see then drop a message before tonight and I’ll edit it in.

Currently I’m covering traits, skills, scepter and mace-play, small group capping, large scale skirmishes, keep offence and defence.

just because your server is bad at WvWvW doesnt mean you need to find excuses..
if you researched a bit you’d know that there are some top EU MMO guilds on the server..
the canadian excuse is just one of the most stupidest excuses ive ever seen

Sorry but this isn’t at all representative.

Your definition of a server being ‘good’ at W3 is to have a player-base who are able to play at times when no-one else is online. This isn’t being good at something.

By the same logic I’m better than everyone on the internet at football, because I had a match last night in my garden and no-one showed up.

I’ve not come across Vizunah Square yet in the matchings but I have come across a couple of german servers which late-night guilds, which completely unbalances the rankings.

The true ability seems to show however, as during daylight hours these servers quickly lose captured points and the other two servers who up.

If you’re playing to be ‘good’ then show up and social hours and prove it – it might actually be more enjoyable then having free-run of the map.

6 months from now, everyone will be a Commander

in WvW

Posted by: Zelden.6143

Zelden.6143

I think the Commander rank should be guild exclusive. The rank is a bought upgrade through Art of War. The rank can then be gifted to an individual player in a guild (for 24-hour or whatever)

In WvW this person will be visible to everyone who is currently representing the guild.

This also fixes the issue with group size- which makes organising a guild of WvW players extremely annoying at the moment.

Here are some helpful hints for getting a good response for any questions or problems you are having:

1) Try and explain the question/problem as clearly as possible. Keep it clean and friendly, people are here to help you; so please don’t rant at them!

2) Check if anyone else has already made a thread. A quick search might give you an answer, and saves clogging up the forum!

3) If you’re posting advice to someone, don’t be abusive or condescending. Everyone is new here, so don’t assume everyone knows the same as you do. Be polite and constructive!

4) Don’t post off-topic threads. Whilst Anet have yet to get all their forums up and running, try and refrain from posting suggestion or discussion topics. Save them on your computer, and wait until the discussion forums are up. Alternatively head over to www.reddit.com/r/guildwars2 and join the discussion there.

5) Say thank you! If someone’s taken the time to respond to a question, or has given your advice, show your appreciation. It only takes a couple of seconds and it will encourage them to post more in the future. Plus you might make someones day

If you have any more suggestions and tips, let me know and I’ll add them in to the main post.

How can I tell if someone is botting?

in Players Helping Players

Posted by: Zelden.6143

Zelden.6143

An example I’ve seen was a guy near a waypoint in one of the snowy lv30-40 zones.

He was standing firing at nothing with all his engineer turrets up.
When he was attacked by anything his character would target that creature and auto-attack until dead. Then he could continue auto-attacking even with nothing there.

Turns out that there were 2 events that frequently happened in that location, myself and a friend managed to lure enough mobs to him to kill him off, then stood around to make sure he wasn’t revived before being dc’d for afk.

If in doubt, report as a bot. Anet will get a snapshot of that persons activity, and you won’t be penalized for an honest mistake.

The great thing about Guild Wars is for the first time in a long while I’ve not felt the pressure to level, as the process itself has been fun and fulfilling and I’ve not been limited in what I can do because I wasn’t max level within a day.

Take time to help out guild-mates, go exploring, level your professions, do jumping puzzles, and more!

Don’t worry about powering through the content! You’re not missing anything. Just enjoy the experience and have a good time doing it!

If I want to heal

in Players Helping Players

Posted by: Zelden.6143

Zelden.6143

I’ve engineered a fantasic healing spec as a Guardian, I rocked about 600-700 bonus healing and had a number of abilities I could use consistently.

Mace in main-hand; aoe healing symbol on ground (boosted with traits) and aoe defensive ability.

Shield offhand: Shield to 5 allies, plus aoe defensive push-back with light-field (cures conditions)

6 skill: Self-heal with conal healing component
7 skill: ‘Retreat’ – grants swiftness and aegis (100% block on next attack), grants heal with trait.
8 skill: Intervention or something – Teleport to ally with lowest health and drop an aoe heal
9 skill: sanctuary (defensive bubble with immunity) or reflective arrow wall ability or stabalisation shout (depends on encounter)
Elite skill: Summon a tome with the following healing abilities
1: aoe heal in placed area – no cd, short cast
2: bouncing chain spell – cures allies of conditions
3: conal buff spell
4: makes nearby enemies ceasefire for a few seconds
5: heals up to 5 nearby allies to FULL health.

Combine this with weapons that have the water rune (30% change to heal on hit) and you’re set.

Edit: Oh and obviously stack gear with bonus healing on.

I’m finding I’m doing particularly well with my guardian spec and playstyle.

I’m usually rocking out with a scepter and focus in one set, and a two handed mace in the second set.

My trait build tends towards toughness and vitality, and then power as a final stat.

I play with a group of at least 3 people, but usually no more than 10, and we either work as a unit or with the main ‘zerg’

My role in the group is to call the shots and try and whittle down enemy numbers. First thing for us is baiting – enemy groups are normally larger than ours, so it’s a case of feigning a retreat to encourage a pursuit, then turning on the front-runners and quickly taking them down.

I’ll usually lead with my mace, hitting the snare ability before placing the down the circle ability which locks them in a small area. I’ll then position myself between them and retreat and use the knock-back ability to send them further into our forces, and further away from them. All the time hitting 2 when off-cooldown. My other skills include the healing signet, the toughness signet, consercration (the burning damage one) meditation charge thing (teleports to foe and burns the enemy) and my elite skill is either my charr warband companions, or my charzooka.

I’ve taken the trait which causes extra damage to burning opponents so I’ll try and chain my abilities to keep them burning at all times (whilst co-ordinating with my team)

In larger scale fights some-times the melee gets a little impossible and puts you in a vulnerable positions. For this I take out my scepter and start hitting the ranged auto-attack. During these large battles I look for people that are slightly away from the main-group and focus them. I’ll head towards them dropping my snare and aoe on them, before hitting the 4 and 5 focus skills to grant me more defense. After this I’ve usually reached them and swap to my mace, sending them towards friendly lines with the knockback skill.

At this point you’ll be probably drawing a lot of enemy fire, so popping heal as well as aegis and you bound signet heal keep me up, before dodging back towards friendly lines and chaining my snares and applying all dots and weakness to try and take down the opponent.

Rinse and repeat on cooldown to whittle down the numbers. The main thing for guardian play in WvW is to be very concious of what is going on around you, don’t be afraid to let a couple of kills get away, and don’t ever tunnel-vision.

If there’s the demand I don’t mind frapsing a few sessions in WvW and tying a commentary on it?

I’m afraid to say that you’re making the wrong approach.

I’m a high survivability specced guardian, but despite this I’d never make the assumption that I can just charge into a huge fray in WvW.

You have to consider that in the melee there are often 10-15, maybe more AoE’s being applied over the area – of course you are going to go down.

As a melee you should be flanking the enemy or picking out the lone guys that are to the side of the main group. Running into the middle without though is just a repeat of charge of the light brigade.

Also as a melee (or any other class for that matter) you should never be attacking the gate. If you’re not on seige you should be firing at enemies on the walls and making sure no-one is trying to charge from behind.

I’m on a connection with 900 ping some days of the week and it downloads fine. It takes 40 minutes but it downloads!

Stop complaining about some minor issue, back in my day 40mb would take 16 hours – and that was assuming no-one used the phone during that time..

Hey Disco,

I think our guild would be perfect for you; we’re a small-medium guild which is formed entirely of small groups of friends, woven together into a friendly community.

We have a dedicated website and dedicated mumble. Our Tekkit community subreddit is also very active, and a large player base from here has made the move to guildwars.

Our guild focus is community, so there are no requirements to do a certain number of guild events a week etc, but there are always groups tackling every type of content GW has to offer, so you’ll never be short of a full party.

See what you think, and please feel free to message me with any details.

Looking for a medium sized mature guild (PVP and PVE)

in Guilds

Hello to both,

Our guild on Gunnars Hold is a small, friendly guild comprising of players of all ages and backgrounds. Whilst we don’t have any rigid age limits in place (we prefer to judge on individual merit) we do have a mature set of players.

Most of our members have joined in small groups, or have moved over from our Tekkit community. For this reason we’re a very tightly-knit, friendly community, with emphasis on the community element.

Please let me know if you have any further questions or are interested in joing.

Best of luck.

Zelden

Hey there,

If all of the above options haven’t quite fitting your needs, hopefully I can help.

I’m running a guild which is comprises of small groups of friends and family which prides itself on being about fun and community. The guild population though small (20ish) has a diverse range of members of all ages and backgrounds.

We don’t have any rules such as “you must attend x events per week” or “players must be 18 or over” etc Members are all taken on their personal merit and anyone that threatens to upset the harmony is quickly dealt with.

If this sounds appealing, or you have any further questions please feel free to get in touch with me.

We’re on Gunnars Hold [EU]

Best of luck with your decision

Just out of curiosity is there a list/hypothesis of sub-forums that will be around once they are full up and running.

My main question as well; Will we have server forums?

Looking for a guild

Going to hop onto the recruitment train.

We’ve got a guild which is made up of groups of RL friends and gamers we’ve played with from other games. For that reason it’s very tight-nit and friendly already, and new additions often feel right at home.

We’ve over on Gunnars Hold EU, but our playerbase is world-wide, we’re a small-medium guild. There’s no particular content focus, we just see what people want to do each night and cater for all.

Mumble and website are dedicated, please feel free to take a look at our subreddit as well, which is where the community first started.

Hope to see you guys around

The above gentlemen sounds like he has a good offer. But if you want to check us out please feel free. Whilst some of us do use voice chat, many of us don’t and it’s not a requirement.

Size-wise, we’re a tight community made up of RL friends, and gamers we’ve all met over the years. Whilst we play on EU servers, we have many American and Canadian players that have joined us.

If you want to gauge a feel for our community, I think our Tekkit subreddit is the best representation of it.

Best of luck with your Guild Wars adventure

Hello world,

We are League of Gypsy Misfits, are group of real-life friends and playing-buddys looking to expand our existing friendly community.

Some of us are RL buddies, some have played with us on other games, others are brand new to the group! Whoever you are, you’ll be a valued member of the team.

We’re active players who seek to do well without breaking into the ‘hardcore’ requirements. Fun first , Winning second – though we like to do both.

We’ve got a dedicated website and forum, and an active subreddit. We also regularly use mumble to chat and do group activities.

If this sounds like your kind of guild please message me in game, or head over to our forums

You can also get in touch via our Tekkit subreddit

Does it seem to crash at any specific time/event? (when you enter combat, load a zone etc?)

Also can I ask what settings you’re playing the game on, or are you unable to play the game at all?

Level 20 too late to start crafting?

in Players Helping Players

Posted by: Zelden.6143

Zelden.6143

Nope, a guildy of mine has had a long day crafting. He’s lv61 and managed to craft himself a full set of gear. I think he’s about 180-200 in crafting level.

Unlike other games, guild wars seems to have a system where crafting is very rewarding and doesn’t require huge input to get a reasonable output from crating.
