Bring Back the Desert Borderland!

I think where Anet went in the right direction with the DBLs was providing a map for those who get the yawns from excessive amounts of moshpit zerg crashing and pvd-karma-train activity.

Like Angel Heart said, there’s heavy infantry and then there’s also marines, and intel, and black ops. Some players want to contribute in ways other than tried-and-tested zerg support builds, and in a game where most classes have good flexibility, why not?

Some love the savage little 5v5s and 7v7s, the sneaky cata squeezed behind an obscure keep wall with one nervous eye over your shoulder, the mundane but necessary work of maintaining our sup while cutting off theirs while freeing the cmdr to focus on bringing the hammer down, or being able to defend an objective and report enemy activity until you get your head around what is going on.

I think the DBLs should have encouraged more variety in player roles, but Anet missed that mark with unnecessary design and features, and to a degree they did so to the detriment of the meat-and-veg zerg train role. I’d call that a learning opportunity.

lol. I roam all the time, on warrior and mesmer, for the purposes of scoutin, flippin and slappin and pretty much nothing else. If a zerg chased me “halfway across the map”, I’d have to assume their cmdr doesn’t have that squirrelling under control, or they don’t really have anything better to do. Fail either way.

Alpine Borderlands will be back

<insert “Why don’t we have both?” taco girl pic here>

When players said, “I miss the alpine maps”, this didn’t mean EVERYONE was saying, “they should can the desert BLs and go back to just alpines”. Looking at the original update thread alone, obviously a lot of folks think the desert BLs are great – and they are, despite their gimmicks and imperfections, especially for havocs. Just because you’re strongly in the “stack might, stabs up, veil front, proceed to steamroll and all the noobs, pls faceroll” camp, doesn’t mean that’s all there is to dubvee and it’s time to go passive aggressive if you can’t get your rocks off that way. These zergophile complainers stuffed the desert BLs with their negative comments and, frankly, with their trepidation to set foot in them for fear of getting their monster lagfest zergs slowed or choked, and that’s a shame.

Remember in T1 when JQ dominated to an embarrassing degree every other week… that’s because no one did giant zerging guilds like JQ. When the new BLs called for a greater mix of smaller, highly skilled roaming brawlers, YB came to the fore because they have some clever, skilled, highly cooperative 5-10 mans, and this gave the game extra color. If you wanted to tag along behind the zerg in your Soldier’s gear, you always had EB.

It would be a shame to not have the desert BLs in the game still.

I was nodding all the way through this. Good suggestions; some that have been put up before, and many that build on ideas that have been suggested before.

Surprised and impressed to see so many intelligent comments on this thread.

For what it’s worth, OP, there are still folks out there who think like you do. I’m one of those types who likes to run across some random, /bow, and go mano a mano until both of us have cycled our elites 3 times with no win and finally /salute and agree to go our separate ways. It’s a good change from the sometimes kittenty scrapping you get in the gank wars.

I play some of my toons in a dedicated havocing guild and again FWIW, we often leave solo roamers alone, esp when the GM is leading. It’s not what we’re there for.

Having said all that, solo roamers know what to expect from a community of gamers.

annnnnnn ofc you use your thiefchar for this …try doing it with your ranger…huh.. maybe THAT would be a challenge… piece of cake running around in full PvP setup with a mesmer or a thief with food and buffs and everything .. and delute yourself that you are a great player…

I am offended that you would suggest such a thing. I don’t even have a thief above 31.

I do this on my PU condi mes, naturally.

I’m with Tseikk. Some of us don’t have time to play the game, log off and run the rest of our lives AND read the forums all the time. One of the advantages of this game is that you don’t have to be married to it, and for me at least that means log in, get as much done as possible and log off again to get all my RL stuff done. So it irks me even more that I have to dump my 100-odd Found Belongings and miss that levelup.

Having said that, I guess if tips like this are broadcast in the forums, as a casual player I have to accept that I’ll miss out on opportunities from time to time.
