It’s funny, I actually did the opposite. I leveled an ele to 80 first, played around quite a bit with one in WvW and sPvP and then decided to level a thief. Now my ele just sits there on the bench, waiting for his turn to get back in the game. Thief is just so much fun to me. The only thing I miss from my ele is the ability to zerg effectively. staff ele + zerg = a ton of fun.
I used the build that Phenn mentions in this post:

It is a great build for leveling because you basically can evade most incoming damage. I would start out with the SB and tag a bunch of mobs, let them group up and then switch to d/d and start the death blossom spam. The trick is using your evades to gain swiftness to kite the mobs when you are out of initiative to allow those bleeds to kill them off. Also, don’t forget to use steal. Steal is an amazing ability and should always be used when fighting, especially with this build because it will give you initiative and some boons. With this build I was able to take down veterans and even some champions by myself. Just remember to re-gear about every 10 levels and you will do just fine.
Feel free to add me in-game if you have any questions.
apparently I am blind…or just bad at reading because I missed that the first time reading through. Interesting…
Where did you read this?
Zoose, awesome video! Could you link to your build that you use for this video please? I want to try it out.
