You can’t run GW2 in a Power Mac G5, you need an Intel Mac.

I don’t know about the Intel HD 4000, but for my GeForce 330M updating the graphics drivers gives huge performance boosts in Windows, not only for GW2 but for other games as well.

Never tried to update graphics drivers in OS X though (not sure if this is even possible).

Naqaj, qaasq was referring to my post asking for system specs.

qaasq, thanks for the screenshot. As others said, your system is supported by Anet, but it just barely makes the cut, so you won’t really have great performance in OS X. I’d say it’s “ok” for PvE, since my wife plays in her MBP that’s even older than yours.

Thanks for the explanation. I noticed the “GraphicsDriver” = “macdrv” line, and I was pretty sure the suggested modifications did no impact on my machine, but my graphics card is not very powerful, so I could not say for sure “it doesn’t change a thing” because maybe people with better cards could have real improvements.

ikir, I play Borderlands 2 on Windows in 1600×900 with mid-high graphics settings. The Aspyr port on the same computer can’t handle 720p on low without hiccups. Definitely a terrible port.

Sorry for extending the off-topic.

Aspyr and Feral ports are not native, and sometimes not even decent (Borderlands 2 comes to mind).

I agree with the others that asking for a native client is probably too much—from the blog post with the 2013 roadmap, it looks like they have their hands full—, and I’m glad this client exists and works reasonably well.

I just want Anet to be a little more supportive. It would be nice to see a red post here once in a while.

It’s frames per second (fps). If you’re already playing on low, there’s not much that can be done. What Mac do you have?

For reference, I play on low on a MBP 15" mid-2010 (i5, 330M) with an SSD and get about 15 fps in mid-populated areas.

If you need more fps (for WvW for example), you’ll probably want to keep playing on Windows.

Client Download Freezing

in Account & Technical Support

Posted by: dipnlik.8972

dipnlik.8972

The percentage is related to the files that the client needs to download when it starts, not including the files you already have, that’s why it shows funky numbers. The client’s probably still downloading all that is needed, you can check that your Guild Wars 2.app application size is getting bigger and bigger. Remember that this is a ~18GB download, so it will take a while.

Probably there’s a technical explanation but that’s how it is. I set in-game gamma correction to about 1.25-1.30 in OS X, while on Windows 1.00 is just fine.

And be forewarned that in fullscreen, when you cmd tab out of GW2 then back in, the gamma will reset to 1.00, so you need to go to the options again and move the gamma slider slightly to reapply the correct value.

I read on this forum that it’s a known Cider issue that’s been around for a long time, so it probably won’t get fixed anytime soon.

epborden, your guess is correct, there’s one of the first screens that has a progress indicator in Windows that doesn’t show up on the Mac client. I’d share a screenshot if I had one available right now.

I already saw the client download up to 50MB of data at this screen, so yeah, waiting definitely helps solving the “issue”.

Just wanted to add that the defaults command that’s been suggested works but it’s kind of using a cannon just to kill a termite.

You can make only the Library folder visible with the following command:

  • chflags nohidden ~/Library

Not that you don’t need to restart Finder for that to take effect.

Other than that: this thread (or another with the same or similar reset instructions, maybe illustrated?) should be stickied.

  • It’s possible to avoid downloading everything again by copying the .dat file from your Windows partition to your OS X partition.
  • The OS X client is a Cider port (kind of a Windows simulator, in layman terms), so performance will take a hit. Depending on your machine you should need to lower you graphic settings a bit. In my MBP mid-2010 (i5, 330m) I play with mid-high settings in Windows but with low-mid settings in OS X.
  • F-keys functionality can be toggled at System Preferences, Keyboard, Keyboard, Use all F1, F2, etc. keys as standard function keys, so you don’t need to use Fn. Note that the game still only captures these key-presses in fullscreen (on my machine at least). If you don’t want to change this setting, I heard there’s an app called FunctionFlip that can toggle only some of the F-keys, but I never used it. Also, you can remap your F1-F4 skills in-game.
  • I never had the aforementioned map problems or Mac-specific crashes, lucky me (knocks on wood)
  • One annoying thing to me is that in fullscreen the gamma setting resets to 1.00 if you command-tab out of the game then in again.

Overall it’s a great client, the convenience of not having to reboot is unbeatable. If your machine is in the list of supported Macs, you should definitely try it.

Percentage reset is normal but file count reset is not. I suggest you double check if the number of files is really resetting or not.

If it’s resetting, while I don’t have a solution to the problem, I can suggest you to try downloading from another network or copy the .dat file from a friend.

Open Terminal (in /Applications/Utilities), and run this command:

  • open -e "/Applications/Guild Wars 2.app/Contents/Resources/CiderSettings.plist"

This should open TextEdit with a configuration file for GW2. Now look for the line that looks like:

  • <string>--cmdline ""</string>

and change it to:

  • <string>--cmdline "-repair"</string>

Save the file and run GW2. Now the welcome screen should show a new “Verifying Archive…” line of text. GW2 will download any files needed to fix itself then it should launch.

Last step is to edit the configuration file again to change the modified line to its original state.

Full-Screen Gamma resets when app gains focus

in Account & Technical Support

Posted by: dipnlik.8972

dipnlik.8972

I have to raise Full-Screen Gamma to about 1.30 to play GW2. The problem is: when I cmd tab to another app and cmd tab back to GW2, the gamma resets to 1.00. The options menu shows the slider and the number are correct, but I need to move the slider a little to reapply the setting.

Tested with gamma < 1.00, same results.

Tested in windowed mode, gamma resets to 1.00 when app loses focus but it is reapplied correctly when it gains focus again.

There’s another user reporting the same behavior but I figured it was better to create a more general topic since the problem is not directly related to the Retina Display.

If you need more information, please ask, I’ll be glad to help.
