I would like Anet to slowly revert the nerfs that was done to weapon skill sets and see if they can balance the traits/stats better. Nerfing weapon skills really pigeonholed spvp thief players into d/p and sb at one point in time. Buffing one weapon skill(s/d – 3) brought a whole new build into the mix which is what they should be doing. I feel that each weapon set should be either strictly dps or strictly condi. That way we don’t have skills that really don’t belong in the weapon set. I’m talking about you Death Blossom.
It may be a little strong but Dancing Dagger should straight up immob maybe for 1/2 or 3/4 a second, bounce once, and cost probably 5 init. Anet obviously wants weapon skills 4 and 5 to be utility thats why x/D got the damage shaft, but they really didn’t add any utility to dancing dagger after nerfing damage to uselessness. Cripple is a joke and doesn’t even give the 6.75s cripple its advertising. That way dancing dagger can be used to coordinate a burst or prevent escape. In terms of utility, it needs to be at least as good as headshot x/P.
Raw damage between the exploded cluster vs. non exploded cluster is dependent on the crit chance between each two. Since an exploded cluster splits into 3 separate bombs, each bomb has a separate chance to crit. The way i see the dmg output is like this.
Crit proc:
Non-exploded dmg > 0 bomb crits dmg
Non-exploded dmg > 1 bomb crit dmg
Non-exploded dmg > 2 bomb crits dmg
Non-exploded dmg < 3 bomb crits dmg
Also, take into account that a non-exploded cluster has the chance to NOT crit. Which would make exploded clusters having potential bomb crits 1 or greater provide higher raw damage output.
There are other variables that need to be considered like the bleed stacks that are provided and fire sigils.
Non-exploded only gives 1 bleed stack while exploded gives the potential of 3 stacks. More bleed stacks is obviously better if you are condi, or you are partnered with a necro in which you help him stack up those bleeds.
Fire sigil proc is based on crit chance, so an exploded cluster having 3 separate crit chances has a greater likelihood of providing the fire sigil proc.
I don’t know if people have posted this before or if this is new tech after the Shadow Shot buff patch, but you can get a Backstab straight from a Shadow Shot while stealthed. Shadowshot has two parts to it.
1. The actual pistol shot that travels to your opponent which connects and sends you shadowstepping to them(the gap closer) also delivers the 5 second blind when it connects.
2. The actual Shadow Stab which does the melee damage
The way to do the Shadow Shot Backstab is to get some distance perferably alittle bit passed Heartseeker range. Two, you stealth up. Three, shoot the shadowshot at your opponent. Four, once u see the shot come out MASH YOUR ONE LIKE THERE IS NO TOMORROW. Boom, instant shadow stepping + backstab. If you look at your combat chat you can see that the Backstab actually hits and not the Shadow Stab(if you were just pressing the 3 and nothing else). Good thing about it, it also produces the Blind condition from the shot, so you have a gap closing backstab + blind condition.
I’ve tested this at max range 900 and up to melee range, the most reliable shadow shot backstab is between alittle bit further than Heartseeker range and max range. However it is possible to do it within heartseeker range and closer, but it is a bit unreliable because the animation recovery of a shadow shot prevents you from mashing the 1 for the backstab to come out.
Why is this even good? Have you ever had to chase someone and you are crippled/chilled/immob and you need to get a juicy hit that is more damaging than your shortbow auto attack, your actual shadow shot, and sometimes your heartseeker? Thats where the Shadow Shot Backstab comes in.
So what are the pros/cons of the technique.
Pros:
1. Gap closer plus meatier attack
2. Saves Cooldowns like Steal, infiltrators sig, and shadowstep
3. Gap closer when no cooldowns available except for stealth
3. Mind game factor – use that + basi and watch your opponent stun break, but guess what you actually haven’t burned your Mug combo yet.
Cons:
1. Has to be done from stealth
2. Have to get the distance right and will fail if opponent dodges the initial shot
3. Situational
I feel that a good thief player will be able to identify and maximize this technique and find the exact time to use it because the downfall of this is that it is situational. The application i can see it most being used is chasing low health Eles and or Engis. Because sometimes you get chilled, or step in that gunk and you want to slap them hard for running away from you, but you are just alittle bit out of reach.
Post here for comments and what you think of this technique. Just started using it and found that its pretty effective.
Left-Click anywhere else on screen, target detargeted.
From what i have gathered:
- same “hush hush” style of talking by Anet
- rankings probably coming within the next 6 months from now
- balance changes happen each patch, whether they target the right thing and actually have an effect is a toss-up
- understaffed for pvp
- good suggestions on incentives given by players but only noted by devs not in actual works
- no real incentive for old players to come back
- no other real game modes besides custom arenas but still probably conquest based
- game will not be an esport<- due to pacing/development and negative experience since the beginning of spvp
- competitiveness and fun equation will take over a year and maybe two expansions to get down
So everyone that has left will still be gone. Everyone that is still playing have nothing to look forward to and should only play the spvp game with the mindset that it is “fun” and nothing else.
So reading the OPs post, you spent 1-2 minutes fighting an ele probably even a bunker ele. As you should of known 30 seconds in that you are going to end the fight right now or that you are going to keep fighting and someone else from the other team is going to rotate/roam over and gib you. It really didn’t have to be a thief since you said you popped all your cooldowns just to fight 1 ele. You could of been 100 bladed down or even 100 naded down. The thing is the ele distracted you, and the thief finished you off which is the sole purpose of his class as the meta stands right now.
I agreed with that, this was one example thats shows 2 hits:9k+ dmg (it does not show time stamp or casting time unfortunately) But the point is that I had a long on going fight with the elemenatlist witch i suppose did his best to bring me down. He used all his skill’s, and also his experience as a pvper. Then a Thief comes in to the fight doing more damage on two hits than anything the elemenatlist was able to do in 1-2 minutes. 1 -2 minutes vs 1-2 seconds, and you still dont get to point here?
I dont know in how many ways I can explain this.Things you could of done better:
1) Don’t blow all your cooldowns on an “epic” 1v1 fight with a bunker ele because sooner or later your 1v1 fight will turn into a not so “epic” 1v2 fight against you.
This was a fair 1v1 in a none populated part of the map (i thought)
2) Use your back camera bind to know who is coming behind you even when you are fighting the ele you should always check who is coming into the point you are at when fighting. Situational awareness is what separates the better players from others. * (Im using this, but im more focus on what skills the player Im fighting is using, than i constant treat from thiefs.)*
3) Position yourself so you don’t get stabbed. Get on a ledge get on some sort terrain to fight the ele and also defend yourself from a gank. Use ranged Necro has 1200 range, it is good. Also that flesh wurm teleport utility is your get out of jail free card, try using it. (I dont what to dedicate one out of 4 skill slots only to be able to avoid one or two hits from a thief)
4) Use your damage mitigators plague form and death shroud to absorb the backstab and heartseekers, you need to precast but in order to precast you should have known that the thief was there in the first place, again situational awareness. (As described above, and how can you know that a thief is there? should i always place marks around me?)
5) Improve your reaction time, this game is not forgiving like other mmos you need to have twitch and the proper conditioning to instantly pop death shroud or to stun break burst. The only way to improve it is to keep on getting bursted by classes until you have it down. (There are so many examples where they got this right, my toughs are that this is your first mmorps and you are playing a thief.)
“High mobility, Highest Single target DPS burst, no damage mitigation, low health pool” – ArenaNet on thieves.
Working as intended.
It really doesn’t matter if the damage is between 1-2 seconds or 1-2 minutes. You fought a roaming spec that is designed to dump all his dps in one go and move onto the next point where his team needs him.
1. Why on earth would you want a “fair” 1v1 fight with a bunker ele? If your team isn’t consistently leveraging unfair situational advantages against the enemy team, and they are doing it to you. You are probably going to lose the match. Why are you fighting in an unpopulated area of the map? If you are not doing something active to cap points, fight on points, get buffs, and run/protect orbs fighting that ele is pretty useless. Especially, looking at that screenshot they have a 2 cap on you. While you are dancing with that ele, they are gaining more points than you over time. You need to disengage a fight like that.
2. Play ele for a bit, learn their rotations and you don’t have to concentrate as hard on the ele and you should be able to place yourself in camera view of anything coming your way. Any roaming class is going to own you when you are off cooldowns, stop thinking its just a constant threat from thieves.
3. So you don’t want to invest in a stun break, then your position has to be really good which really changes over time, or your god-like teammates have peels for days. Necros are #1 targets for roamers, you will get focused and when you do good luck without stun breaks
4. If you dont see the thief then your teammates have to tell you that the thief is coming your way, since you were fighting off point and don’t know where you are how on earth they going to help you?
5. No this is not my first mmo and yes i do play a dps thief.
Also, please watch Amesan, as he will show you what you are doing wrong with necro, positional and game-wise.

Yes, voip could be a nice feature if everyone was polite, well-mannered, and used it correctly. But i am assuming Arenanet would rather not have people in-game raging at each other or spouting off abuse if they were to implement voip on their pvp servers. I’d rather propose in-game radio messaging using presets like how shooters like Counter Strike operate. Obviously, the community would need to define what kind of calls would be needed. For example, one group of presets would message out “Hold this Position”, or “Enemy Spotted”, or “Area Clear”. Next group of presets would talk about the capture points and say something like, “Need help close/mid/far point” or “Attack close/mid/far point”.
I’m sure there are better descriptions out there and this method of communication seems optimal and would not be terribly difficult to try and implement. Another idea would be to create our own custom messaging. We would have a new tab under the chat dialog strictly for PvP, and we would be able to go into our game options and bind our own message strings to keys. For example, i could bind my F5-F12 keys to messages like:
F5: 1 enemy
F6: 2 enemies
F7: 2+ enemies
F8: close point
F9: Far Point
F10: Mid point
F11: get the buff
F12: Fall back
So if i wanted to, i could hit F5 and F10 to tell my teammates 1 enemy mid point in the PvP chat dialog.
