It’s not so low that you’re kittening yourself. It’s fine for normal play. The problem comes when comparing it to 1h sword (as well as other professions who rock with a GS). And I think the ‘logic’ of a huge metal weapon doing subpar damage is conflicting for most of us.
Axe is an AoE weapon, so the lower damage makes sense. I have a feeling that Anet is similarly penalizing GS.
Whenever there is a discussion about pets’ effectiveness, there is always a big disagreement because it’s quite different at level 1 vs level 80.
At low levels, pets are seriously overpowered and do the majority of the damage. With each level, the power shifts more and more to the ranger.
At lower levels, the pet does a bigger percentage of your total damage, but the percentage drops with each level.
There are a number of really overpowered abilities in this game for early leveling. The ranger pet is most definitely one of them. For a while, I seriously felt like I was just tagging along while my pet was doing all the work.
It’s a basic question, but I’m still trying to get a grasp of how to play my mesmer (level 23). I’m constantly changing weapons and trying various tactics.
What’s your attack sequence for solo mobs?
What do you do when facing multiple mobs?
For me, lazy mode for killing solo mobs is scepter/pistol.
1. pDuelist
2. Confusing Images as the mob approaches.
3. Illusionary Counter (if blocked, then good dmg+clone..otherwise, blind)
4. If still not dead, shatter or swap weapons to sword/focus for Blurry Frenzy.
For multiple mobs, add in pWarden and probably Decoy as I’m likely going to have a lot of problems and will need to run away.
In terms of balancing, it makes perfect sense that your pet should disappear too. The pet is basically an extension of you.
Disabling auto attack defeats the purpose of having auto attack in the first place. I don’t know about you, but I don’t want to mash 111111111111111111111 all night long.
Anet said it? Officially?
I don’t think it’s pointless at all.
I don’t mind the utilities too much. Every class has a mixed bag of utilities.
I’d rather Anet focus on addressing our pet concerns.
Sometimes, it rubberbands you back if you try to manually move.
Sometimes…and this is really bad…the jumping attack screws up badly and shoots you off in a random direction. When this happens, occasionally, your character does two jumping attacks in a row, which puts you far away from your target and can easily aggro more mobs.
The frustrating thing is that 1h sword is one of our highest dps weapons. And since it’s a sword, it does melee AoE damage. So I like using it for random quest/mob grinding, but for more difficult content, sword is not a good idea.
