Creslin, you already posted this in the ele forum. You’ve had your say there. I still can’t fathom why you have latched on to this as some kind of important cause. It should be the very last thing on anybody’s list of things to fix for eles.
Creslin, I can’t fathom why you think this rises to the level of something that is even worth discussing when there are many other issues with the class that remain unaddressed.
But since you seem so passionate about it, then what the heck: lets get rid of mist form completely and replace it with something that is actually useful most of the time. Most of the time, Mist Form merely lets me chose where I want to die. Sometimes, for variety, it lets me die near one of my allies so that they can also die trying to save me. I would gladly give up the highly specific keep defense scenario that you find so offensive if it meant we got something on par with what guardians get.
But this should be so far down the list of priorities that one needs a telescope to see it from the top of the list.
…This is for PvE; I don’t know how it would work in PvP.
Ele gets by OK in PvE. I think most of the concerns are for WvW and PvP. Builds that are adequate against monster AI may melt when faced with human opponents who do a better job of optimizing their resource usage and exploiting your weaknesses.
I cosign the OP. I’ve played ele from the start, and the best hold by far is D/D. That’s fun, but situational and not very wizardly. We should have more viable options for WvW and PvP especially.
I’m at the point now that I think I’ll just make yet another warrior until they unkitten this class.
On the other hand, when using the gift of battle as your standard, you immediately realize that the costs of the armor, weapons, and jewelry are so unbelievably overpriced, it’s inconceivable. The prices on all of these need to be dropped by a factor of 4, at the least, end of story.
Yup
Badge drops need to be higher, and they need to be auto looted like karma. I the time I’ve been playing WvW I’ve earned enough karma and gold to buy full sets of exotic karma or crafted armor, and could easily have a dungeon set with less time invested (if I liked the dungeons) BUT I HAVEN’T GOT ENOUGH BADGES YET FOR ONE PAIR OF PANTS!
Whoever came up with the badge economy wasn’t talking to the rest of the design team or was perhaps not taking their medication that day.
Single target DPS does seem to matter. I’ve got about 250 badges from about 1300 kills on my D/D ele. That doesn’t count zone completion or jumping puzzles. I hate jumping puzzles with the white-hot intensity of a thousand suns and refuse to do them, even with a mesmer. I might try a scepter build to see if more 1v1 damage helps up the rate.
It also seems like a bad design decision to tie badge counts to single target DPS because it does not give players an incentive to play support roles. Healing, conditions, boons, AOE damage all contribute to a battle.
As someone who hated the PvP based on my experience in earlier games, I can say that WvW isn’t that. There are teams, a logic to the map, and I just don’t see the random griefing that I associate with “PvP”.
Practically, completing the WvW zones is about the same difficulty completing cursed shore. Easier if you get lucky on your timing.
I actually completed a WvW map last night, picking up a skill point and five vistas. I only had 2 fights along the way because the map uncrowded. One I was outnumbered and ran away. (Have your escape-oriented skills ready when traveling solo.) The second ended up being a 1 on 1 duel in the middle of nowhere. I won, but it was close. Basically like a high-end veteran fight. Pretty sure we both had fun. :-)
If you like PvE, you may love WvW. It’s more similar than you might expect.
Wait, we get bonuses for WvW? I guess I saw that on the WvW page but I kinda assumed they were just worthless. Now reading this I realize I’ve never got them and I’ve never transferred. So like three months I’ve been going without.
I am not well pleased. Even less so that it is taking so long to fix. Can I at least get some kind of trophy? Maybe a backpack that looks like a big screw sticking out of my body…
Ah never mind, I probably won’t be playing by the time you get around to this.
“…like Guild Wars before it, GW2 doesn’t fall into the traps of traditional MMORPGs. It doesn’t suck your life away and force you onto a grinding treadmill; it doesn’t make you spend hours preparing to have fun rather than just having fun…”

cool story bro
I don’t even play a ranger and yet it seems self-evident that the balance team has completely failed to appropriately prioritize their efforts. Perhaps anet needs to hire a product owner who understands the concerns of players to keep the designers focused on the best opportunities?
Or is that supposed to be JP’s job? Pretty embarrassing showing if so…
Another unhappy customer here. I enjoy playing WvW and the fact that legendary items and ascended will now give a stat advantage coupled with the insane grind it takes to get them means that people who can play only 5-10 hours a week like me will be at a permanent disadvantage. Also don’t like that the new content appears to be gated by grinding for infusions and ascended.
If anet goes ahead with this then there needs to be a less grindy way, hopefully soloable if one has to play at odd hours or for short periods, to get to stat parity, just like it is for exotics now. Trouble there is that it would anger everyone who did the insane grind for legendaries already.
I’ll stick around for a bit to see how it plays out, but I think this may be the excuse I needed to set aside MMOs for several years, yet again.
