I’m someone who’ll frequently defend ArenaNet and the design decisions they make in the name of their epic ideas. The Lost Shores event sounded incredible, and I raced home from work on Friday to participate. Here’s how my weekend went:
Phase 1 – The initial LA lag-fest was pretty bad, to the point that it reduced the audience of friends socialising in my room to hysterics at the 45+ seconds of skill lag, random teleporting, appearing/disappearing character models and pretty much every other aspect of the “unmissable” event I’d been banging on about. Oh well, I got my contribution (eventually) and headed into Fractals with my guild. Fractals is brilliant and, barring a little design tweaking needed for some of them (Swampland fractal, I’m looking at you.) I think this is the best piece of content added to GW2 so far. I also completed all of the event quests that I was able to, but Noll was completely broken, so that stopped dead. Ho hum
Phase 2 – Arrive at LA with 20 minutes to go. Everyone waits around until 8PM GMT hits and… nothing. Except the event text changed slightly. Cue 10 minutes of searching for what changed until someone notices the half-constructed Trebuchet and the entire mapful of players head over to it. The forums suggested that “something” was going to occur so we waited… for another half an hour, until out of nowhere, the Trebuchet crumbled into dust and suddenly the harbour was open. Riiiiiight. It seems as though our server completely skipped over the world event, so that was a big waste of time. The initial push into Southsun Cove was by far the best bit of this whole event and went very smoothly indeed, rendering me all the more baffled as to the complete write-off that was…
Phase 3 – Travel to Southsun Cove with 15 minutes to go and join my guildies in the overflow. The server seems busy, but no more so than it had been the day befiore, so spirits were high. When the event kicked off, we gleefully ran up the ramp to the newly opened cavern and… nothing. It was completely empty… for me at least. I’m hearing stories from my guildmates of fighting epic (if super laggy) battles against the Karka as the first disconnect hits me. Relog, and I’m dead. Respawn at the Waypoint and run back… huzzah, players and particle efects! Except my skill bar isn’t responding, and everyone’s running in a staright line straight into walls… disconnect. Repeat this another 6 times over the next half an hour until I’d had enough. I had to give up on something I’d been looking forward to all weekend because it was completely broken for me, only to hear 2 hours later of the fantastic rewards bestowed on my luckier guild-mates for their participation.
My computer easily kicks out 60fps on maximum detail in everything but the most intense WvW events, and throughput tests on our very fast broadband just after I gave up showed it wasn’t an issue with our line, which leaves it down to the server. Now I hear that people have been handed multiple exotics for minimal participation in this event and I can’t help but feel a little upset.
I love the concept behind this event, I love the scale of it, but the fact is that the GW2 servers are blatantly incapable of handling the weight of your design concepts. Why couldn’t the overflow player limit just have been capped at something more sensible and the HP of the enemies down-scaled to ensure everyone had a responsive, fun encounter to enjoy?
The fact that I spent so much time doing the pre-event questlines only for them to be too broken to finish, leaving me without even a vanity item to show for my efforts just irks me further. I get that I’m probably not going to see any reward for my efforts, but what I’d like more than anything is one of the straight talking statements ArenaNet are usually so good at that acknowledges the problems with this event, and more importantly the steps that they intend to take for future ones to avoid a repeat of this.
I love this game, but I just can’t ever see myself committing to another live event unless I know that something significant has changed so that everyone who’s dedicated their time and energy to taking part can actually enjoy the content.
Just looted a shoulder skin from the Karka in Sunshore.
Same on Whiteside Ridge EU – Noll seems to have completely disappeared now?
