That is the way to go.
Though what is sad I think, if you had exactly the same fight and end up losing it, you wouldn’t come and post how great it was, even if you enjoyed it, but whine about nightcapping
We wouldn’t have posted about our successful defense if it hadn’t be successful, right?
About nightcapping, I hate it no matter who does it. Us or “you”. I think points earned between 3am and 3pm should be halved. But please let’s leave this neverending debate out of here. There’s plenty of other threads about it.

Wow, if CaSu moved to Augury Rock they definitely already left since they everything is Desolation this morning.
But while I am not a fan of nightcapping (or PvGates), I want to thank everybody for the epic defense of Askalion Hills last night. Possible the most amazing time I’ve had in ten years in massive PvP.
Seriously, the first time I’ve seen the whole Desolation population on a borderland act as one, without silly sword symbols on the map and stray players going around leeching karma.
Around midnight, when Gunnar blasted our south gate and Augury was already inside, just one corner away from the orb I thought we were done and STILL no one left. It was an incredible last stand, and when the smoke lifted we were still holding it. And to see everyone running supply routes right after that in order to rebuild and repair knowing they were going to come back over and over was almost moving. I don’t even know how exactly, but “epic” is the only word that truly does it justice.
Thanks everyone for taking things seriously and making everyone’s gaming experience better. Keep it up!

This deserves a bump. It’s a farming tool/exploit, and it is certainly unintended. The chest is daily but supposedly you have to fight for it. A mesmer can simply service his entire faction (server) non stop and that gives a faction/server an undeserved amount of free siege weapons if nothing else.
In all fairness though, I have no idea on how they could prevent this, so it’s not like I expect a fix tomorrow. I just HOPE they will fix it.

I am sorry to be the one to tell you this, but since the server transfers are still free, if you care about pvp you should move. In many games there are servers where very few care about PvP, except those games don’t need your server to fight united against other servers. In this case, no fix is possible other than you accepting that your server is a 88% PvE server. Time to move <3

PvP in Obsidian Sanctum is the best thing happened to PvP in many MANY years. It’s just brilliant, really great. Awesome, I love it. I only play games for PvP and the idea of PvE simply makes me cringe. I’ve been pvping since it was humanly possible and I’m old enough to have pvped on everything, from Pong to Guild Wars 2 through Ultima Online pre-Trammel and anything else nasty you can think of.
However, the arrow cart bullkitten at the top of the final part (arena) is not PvP. It’s just loads of bull and whoever keeps repeating that it’s pvp and stop whining and such is really basically just a troll. Unless the campers get distracted or bored and lose focus, it’s pretty much impossible for anyone to get on the top of that room if the top is camped. This is BECAUSE of arrow carts and how they hit through walls and things like that, too. Mind, there isn’t any skill in getting up there, since the first who does in the morning or afternoon when no one is there can keep it until the server dies.
The only viable strategy (the one that doesn’t require huge amounts of luck) is to place a trebuchet at the start of the dungeon and bombard the campers while the rest of your group climbs up. And that strategy requires 10 people (to build the treb). A bit too much if you ask me, but that’s up to personal tastes. And again, not that great pvp.
Having to fight for the top of a vertical room is great pvp. Having to spend money on a trebuchet that finally clears my path just by hitting a button doesn’t feel good at all.
So, again, this dungeon is fantastic and the general “griefing” that happens through it is what I actually call “awesome pvp content”. On the other hand, the last room needs to be fixed and I am pretty sure it wouldn’t take anything away from the whole dungeon if they simply took away siege weapons from it.
To all those who think they are good at pvp for camping for hours at the top of the room with arrow carts, I hate to judge but you obviously don’t give a mole about PvP. You don’t even realize that the reason the place is not camped when you go there is not because people are not as good as you at pvping, it’s because people who like pvp don’t bother with an exploitable spot and an arrow cart.

Yesteday in the afternoon I noticed some [CaSu] (the alleged Canadian guild) in the Augury Rock zerg. No idea if that is a spoof guild, since tags are not unique, or a sign of the fact that they, or some of them, moved to the other French speaking server.

Alright,
I’ve been waiting for WvW Desolation organization to start for a while now, and sure something is happening on the field, but I strongly believe that victory is going to be achieved on the meta-level (meaning out of the game) first.
In order to become better at WvW we, as a server, need to start figuring out things that are very clear to some of the best guilds out there but definitely not clear to lots of other players, and not just the casuals. There’s plenty of PvP lovers that queeu for WvW daily and could be much more efficient for our server if they know what’s going on without being forced to join one of the big guilds.
Problem is, where could all that meta stuff happen? I’ve been hoping Arenanet was going to give us server-specific forums, but apparently this is not the case, so while we wait for something like it, I think we should start working on some communication tool that can be used to organize and link all the Desolation WvW Guilds & Groups.
It would be easy to propose an external forum, but those things take time and they never work because someone said so. Should one website or forum become the unofficial Desolation WvW site that would be great, but until that happens “naturally”, I’d refrain from just naming places. Larger guilds tend to look at forums they don’t own suspiciously, so before you have a tight-knit neutral place, you often have a squabbling bunch of forum warriors boycotting each other in-game.
For the time being, as silly as it sound, we might just use this thread. Over and over, it would at least represent the first step into what is certainly going to be a bigger scheme and it’s going to require more space. But for now, I propose that we:
- Suggestion 1)
Loosely present our Guilds, or Alliances, or non-definable Playing Groups. A few “Officers” names would help people in starting to know who to pay attention to in /team chat and who to disregard as random caps-locker. Please, refrain from posting individual names. The purpose of organizing is to present multi-player groups where individual will eventually find a home, not a list of single players eager to fight. Of course you are eager to fight or you wouldn’t be here
Needless to say, official or not, we’ll need a “server forum” at some point. But please, if one already exists please let me know. If it doesn’t, let’s not try to impose one, but feel free to propose solutions that can eventually lead us there.
- Suggestion 2)
The bigger groups, and especially those with Commander status, could name a Borderland (Eternal, Blue, Red, Green) that they plan on making their home. For example, and considering the stupid queues, if I know that [IRON] is always going to be on the Blue Borderland, it’s easier for me to organize with them, follow them, familiarize with them and learn to know them and how they play. Some for other guilds, on other borders. This is not to create territorial control within our server, more like a way to know that “this and this” are known to take care and protect that border, while “this and this” are known to have a presence on that other. By consolidating some players and [tags] in certain areas it’s easier for lesser groups of players to find their way and be useful knowing who to listen to (if they want to).
- Suggestion 3)
I think it would be great if everyone who posts here could modify his/her forum signature in order to show their main WvW in-game character name. Not mandatory, duh, but I am sure it would help to know if the person speaking above or below me is the Commander I successfully defended Stonemist with for 6 hours yesterday, or that other guy who kept insulting everyone and I had to /block in order not to listen to his obnoxious typing.
I understand this is a long post and in no way I want to tell anyone how they should play the game. I just thought it was a good idea to try and start somewhere, as I am sure things can only get better for us if we start playing “as a server”.
Please feel free to insult me or ignore me, and I really hope you will all have better ideas than mine and we’ll start putting them in practice as soon as possible.
Respectfully,
Lefteye Falconeer

I have about 1100 kills (one thousand and one hundred) and only 178 honour badges. No, I never ever miss a bag, I am actually quite rabid about it and I am pretty sure that I probably got myself killed multiple times in order to get a loot bag, which makes me a terrible player I know. Still, 1100 kills and 170 honour badges. It’s about 1 badge every 6 kills. In order to get a weapon with pvp badges I need something like 1500 kills. That is a bit too much, and not because “it’s a grind” (I go to WvW for the sake of WvW, not to get gear) but because it’s way slower than any other mean to get to the exotic weapons.
It’s faster to get to exotic by money, crafting and dungeons. WvW is by far the slowest way and while it’s not a problem at all, I am not sure I like that.
[Ajeje Clan]
I think this is a great idea. Losing servers keep losing even more, since people stop queueing for WvW when they realize all is going to happen is huge repair bills.
Granted, this happens even without the outmanned buff, but it should definitely work for when you are outmanned and have basically no chances to fight back.

The ridiculous part is that I am sure there’s plenty of 1c cutters that are losing money.
Example: the trinket market. At the moment the profit (sell value minus the average cost of the ingredients) is so narrow that if you happen to have to change the price of your goods ONCE then you are already losing money. Still, idiots are 1c-undercutting all the time and AS A RESULT of that other idiots 1c-undercut them over and over. As a result the smart*** that undercut now has to reprice his/her item or he won’t make a sale at all, but by losing 5% on it the profit is gone. And that is if he/she has to reprice it only once. Don’t get me started about having to reprice it twice or more.
To recap: profit in the trinket market at the moment is about 15-25 silver a piece. REPRICING is about 12-13 silver each time. See the problem?
Point being, when the profit is narrow people should stop “competing” and be a little more patient. As producers we could settle on a price and just have stuff pile up at that price, and sooner or later it would get sold. The contant undercutting is not hurting me, it is hurting EVERYBODY (except the buyers, of course), including and especially that person that feels smart just because by going 1c lower the lowest price he/she will MAYBE make a quick sale. Or most likely will lose money.
I know this is not going to change, humans are… well.. humans. Bit if common sense could prevail for once, people would just understand that the profit margin on some goods is too low to let those money go into that 5% sink just to pat your back and tell yourself in the mirror that you are such a cool seller. It’s not worth it.
The challenge here is NOT to make a few sales, it is to make a profit in a confused market with huge, preemptive taxes.
And yes, once again, the problem is NOT the 1c cutting. It is the 5% to reprice stuff. Competition would be really fun and healthier without that anticipated 5%. But since we have it, everyone should rush less and think more.

Support for this. I see no reason to not have real raid party options.
[Ajeje Clan]
Yeah I noticed that too.
This quickly went from being the WvW (RvR) I’ve always dreamt about… to a meaningless game where the key to win is to jump with your zerg on the enemy zerg BEFORE you appear on their screen. This is particularly effective when you know a certain zerg is at the gate of one of your keeps, so you know where they are even if you can’t see them. By storming on them you are guaranteed the “surprise effect”, cause it’ll take them many AOE deaths before even realizing what hit them.
[Ajeje Clan]
It is killing WvW. What’s the point? I die over and over now everytime we are assaulting a gate. All of a sudden there’s corpses everywhere. THEN you begin to see the enemies. So sad…
[Ajeje Clan]
This has been driving me and my friends nuts for days now. Literally sucking the will to play WvW out of us, as there’s no way to counter an invisible zerg. I am spending so much oney on repairing from ghostly deaths that I will have to quit. It would be nice to have a word, Arenanet.
[Ajeje Clan]
People from Vizuna Square, it shocks me that you care more about winning (against gates) than about having a fair fight.
Seriously?
[Ajeje Clan]
Just make it so points and captures count as full from 3pm to 3am, and they count half from 3am to 3pm. Is that so unfair? Or too hard to implement?
Vizuna Square would probably still win, and that’s OK, but it would feel less pointless for the other factions.
How can anyone, or Arenanet, disagree with this?
[Ajeje Clan]
I am happy they won’t turn off the Borderlands at off-times as they did in other games, where you could only engage in a siege at fixed times. On the other hand though, this is obviously providing an unfair advantage for people who chose to somehow “cheat”. I am not saying they are cheaters, not even remotely, I am just saying that the circumstances make the fight totally unfair, and that choosing to roll on a server outside of your intended region as a way to exploit the lack of players on the other servers AND on your server (for us Europeans playing on a NA server would mean less queueing) is pretty much being smart in order to get an advantage.
I think the only way to fix this is by introducing a mechanism so that the points you score during non-peak hours are halved, or worse. This way, fighting would still make sense, but the amount of points earned when no one else is around would have a less dramatic impact.
This, or bust. The way things are there’s no way the French will ever lose, and there’s no way for them to prove that they are good players, hence there’s no way they’ll ever get a clear win or a win that will earn anybody’s respect. Sad, but true. Not that they care. But just sayin’…
