over the past month i went from feeling under powered to some what balanced to the other classes.
So, for a class that takes a month to learn, the pay-off is that you’re “some what balanced to the other classes”? Wouldn’t you expect the Ele to be at least “marginally more effective”?
What I can say is that water/arcane D/D Elementalist is in a pretty good place right now, and I think my video and experience is more than enough proof of that. As for staff or S/F Ele…I really have no idea. I haven’t played them enough to get an idea of how good or bad they are.
I’ve only done PvE, and S/D and Staff are underwhelming in that setting (to put it nicely). With S/D you’re trying to stack might to do passable damage (against stationary opponents), and now that they nerfed/broke Dragon’s Tooth and nerfed EA it’s even worse. Staff is okay for large events/zergs, but otherwise pretty bad unless you have some way to take the aggro off of you consistently (GoE’s cooldown is too long to rely on). I’d imagine that both are even worse against Human opponents that actually dodge.
Creslin, if you have to be a D/D Ele to be as effective as other classes, something is wrong. I have used S/D primarily, and some staff too, and it’s weak no matter how often I switch attunements or stack might.

Weapon swapping outside of combat should definitely be implemented. It should also be allowed in combat, but only if no weapon skill has yet been used. This would prevent being blindsided with no way to switch to your “up close” set…
Just hit 28, but so far I can say that for me Thief has been much more effective than Ele for me in PvE… I’m using D/P and Shortbow.
Underwater combat is just terrible with the Elementalist no matter how you slice it.
Sounds good, can I be nearly as effective with another spec, or just a specific D/D build?
And the big picture is that many good D/D Ele PvPers can 1v1 ANY class in the game and win. And not only that, Ele has some of the best group support in the game, so not only can you 1v1 any class and win, you also bring AMAZING support to your group while you’re doing it. There really aren’t many classes that do that…in fact, I can’t think of any.
Yeah, D/D Ele, we’ve heard that a million times. What if we don’t want to be confined to one spec? And how much support are you able to provide with that D/D ele? Because, if you want to switch to another weapon you’ll have to do it manually, outside of combat.
If you don’t like the playstyle of Ele, then by all means, try another class.
I have, and now I wish I hadn’t spent so much time on the Ele (I’ve been sitting at 78 for over 2 weeks with no desire to get 80). My experience comes from PvE, and in that setting the Thief/Ranger makes the Ele seem like hard mode (and for me, the Thief is more fun).
Frankly, the versatility of the Ele doesn’t overcome the deficiencies in damage and defense, and I have to work A LOT harder to get a worse result. “Jack of all trades, master of none” is a perfect characterization of the Ele to me. Yeah, I can “do stuff” all day long, but it doesn’t really feeling like anything I’m doing is all that effective. I agree that you give up WAY too much for the ability to have 20 skills available to you at the same time (kind of) .
I’m surprised nobody in this thread has mentioned underwater combat. The Ele skills are so incredibly weak I can’t imagine they’re not the worst in the game by a large margin.

The bug is that the tool-tips haven’t been updated to reflect the nerfs.
The difference between the two is that the Karka event was account bound. Each character could only do the chest once allowing each player to bring their alts scaled to 80 to redo the event in active overflows.
Exactly, the Karka items were account bound. If it was meant to be once per character, they would have been soul bound. They had to keep the event going because of the massive lag and DC issues. If everything ran smoothly, the event would have run once on each of the main + overflow servers, ending at approximately the same time. However, it didn’t and they didn’t lock down the chest. The fact that most had to resort to tricks like hopping overflow servers should tell you that it wasn’t intended.
The vendor exploit was indeed an exploit because players on the same character bought a vast amount (100x++) of items and tried to get away with it.
There were people that got perma-banned for buying as little as 10 of the items from the bugged vendor.
From your vehement defense of the practice I’m sure that you looted the chest with all of your characters, and I’m guessing got some precursors. So just enjoy it, and let the people who feel like they got gipped express their frustration.
Multiple toons would seem fine to me but if deleting making multiple lvl 1s and repeating that does seem liek an exploit to me. Though I don’t see how it could have been abused too much since it was extremely difficult to even get into the zone during event with so many participating.
Perhaps it wouldn’t have been so difficult for people to get on if others weren’t running their alts through it?
It’s possible. If you have a friend who is in that particular overflow and you’re partied with him, you could use the “join in overflow” function. Why it lets you loot, I don’t know. Oversight?
Probably hubris, they thought the event would go smoothly on all servers…
Come on, use your head. The special Karka loot was account bound. It’s pretty obvious that the one time event was meant to be run by one character per account. However Anet was a bit overconfident and didn’t restrict the chest per character, thinking that it would go smoothly on all servers. I made a conscious effort not to hop on another character, especially after what Anet did to people who just bought items at a vendor. I’m sure that my decision to take the high ground will be in vain, though.
People did in fact loot the chest on all of their alts, some scoring 3 or more precursors. To me it’s very similar to the vendor exploit, though I don’t think a ban is appropriate (didn’t then, don’t now).
What about the people that looted the chest with multiple characters and got 3+ precursors? Yes, this actually did happen.
Think of it this way, you being less than 80 with good gear meant that the entire event was even more of a headache for everyone else there with you. Every group there quite clearly needed help not hinderance from lower levels because this wasnt a fluff event that a level 80 could solo. It was nigh impossible content without repeatedly dying, butting your head against a brick wall, until you found a chest.
That makes no sense, since everyone was scaled up to 80. Not only that, there were tons of people that didn’t contribute at all, and logged in at the end with multiple characters to get multiple 20-slot bags, unique rings, and even multiple pre-cursors. As a level 78 who was actively rezing, healing, and damage-dealing I probably contributed more than most level 80s did anyway, but my loot is worth nothing comparatively and I CAN’T EVEN USE IT because none of it is appropriate for my class!
ran it with 2 80s both got 2 78 exotics, so he probably was, and yeah, i feel ripped off. 20 slots though!
I don’t feel bad for you, looting the chest multiple times is clearly an exploit.
Agreed, I did the event on my main which has been sitting at 78 for about a week, while leveling an alt. If I knew how the event/loot was going to work, I could’ve easily gained those last 2 levels.
All of my loot was lvl 74, and I couldn’t use ANY of it. If they’re not going to give everyone approximately the same value loot, they should have at least given gear that was USABLE by the player.
It’s ABSOLUTELY RIDICULOUS that they put precursors in the drop table for this event. A few lucky people hit the friggin lottery and either have a HUGE head start for a legendary or never have to worry about gold again. Others got loot worth about 1/100th as much. It’s also really stupid to give out non-scaled loot for a scaled event. As a level 78 who was very active during the event I contributed as much or more than a lot of the level 80s (and there were lots of people that went AFK and came back just to collect the reward). I really feel slighted.
With that said, I feel even worse for the people that couldn’t make the event.
They either neglect gear, user the wrong kind of weapon for the job (staff is a long range support weapon, using it to go toe to toe is like a sniper using their rifle as a club) or they sit in a single element / do not switch often enough, or they don’t use their utilities correctly, or they don’t understand what their skills do and so on.
I don’t know, I have my Ele geared fairly well for my level, am constantly switching attunements, know my utilities, etc. and I definitely have had issues dying in PvE, especially in some of the personal story missions. One of the main issues we have is lack of aggro management, but the Thief doesn’t really have that and so far I am finding it much more effective. I can easily take on a Veteran and two regular mobs a level higher than me, something I could never have dreamed of doing with my ele.
How about GM traits that are on par with other classes? How about more traits that are useful more than 1/4 of the time? Other classes have traits that only work with specific weapons, but Elementalists can’t spec into one attunement so the same mechanic doesn’t make sense for us.
No, roll another class.
yeah that’s not going to happen anyway
“I’ll pass it on” probably means more like
If I don’t forget, I’ll mention it to the relevant devs, and they might give it an “mm” before forgetting about it
They will probably make those skills drop special “warrior only” versions of the conjured weapons among with some kind of a self debuff to the caster…
I can still pull a big burst with S/D by opening with fire signet, >Fire< 4, (arcane wave), 3, 2, 5, >lightning< 2, 1, 3, 1, 2.
Scepter/dagger is fun as hell, even if I love my staff. Staff just isn’t as interesting.
Even with liberal use of high cooldown skills (arcane wave) to might stack, other classes do more damage, and can do it with much less effort. Elementalist feels like hard mode compared to Thief or even Ranger…
If you enjoy carpal tunnel, dying a lot, doing mediocre damage, gimmicks (conjured weapons), being totally worthless under water, and choosing between a bunch of crappy traits and elites, then Elementalist might be the class for you!
If you like taking 8 button presses to do the same damage that other classes can do with 2, you’ve come to the right place!
Next up:
“Tornado: Removed the unintended effect of being able to use the skill while underwater”
“Ride the Lightning: Changed the effect so that if no enemy is targeted, all other skills go on cooldown”
Or ultimately, “Elementalist: Class removed, why aren’t you playing a Warrior already?”.
