Buy a mini-desktop and stream the game to a cheaper laptop – I have two gaming cubes and can stream games to any laptop, I use AMDs technology to do this but I am sure there are plenty of alternatives, frankly there is no substitute for a 24" monitor with GW2 but there are some games where this doesn’t matter.
As regards the specs of the laptops mentioned, 120GB of SDD is small for the price you’re playing. I also think Seagate is producing hybrids with 32GB SS(cache) + 1 or 2 TB HDD – these are far better value for your money relative to the overall cost of the laptop.
Also if you’re gaming with a laptop you’re well advised to invest in a secondary monitor.
I would also predict that over the next year or two new desktops are going to shrink to a quarter of there current size. I can already do this with current technology, unfortunately the size (or length) of high level graphics cards holds this back from going all the way. That problem is going away very soon …
Overall I would say laptops – for the same $ – are half as powerful as a desktop and have half the lifecycle of a desktop.
Thanks for the suggestion, this seems a bit advanced for what I am looking for budget and space wise. I appreciate the info though I was not aware this was an option.
This may or may not apply to you, but figured I’d just advise incase. I bought a pretty beast gaming laptop around 2 years ago for an ex of mine to play Guild Wars 2. Was an i7 with a GTX 960 4gb. I found gw2 is pretty kitten CPU heavy, and the game ran beautifully, but the laptop switched off often while playing. I later found out that it was actually only Guild Wars 2 pushing to 90-100fps which was pushing the CPU temp up to like 99’c, and with laptops not having the best cooling fans, this didn’t work out. A frame limiter to 60fps fixed the issue, and dropped the temp down to stable.
Hope it works out, and your spouse doesn’t make you do all their jumping puzzles for them like mine did! -_-
Thanks for the advice, I’m on my own for those jumping puzzles though!!
For GW2, those are more than enough.
You sure the ROG comes with two 128GB SSDs instead of one laptop HD and one SSD? If this is correct, and prices are equal, i’d lean to the ROG as the it has 8GB extra RAM and double SSD. The smaller capacity doesnt matter as you can always use a 1TB external USB3 HDD for big files anyway.
You are correct its a Primary Drive which is the Intel and the Optical Drive, you can have kitten Vs. the Laptop and I was misreading the specs.

I’ll double check and update this post, I may have mis copied the specs from what I modeled on ibuypower.com
Depends on what the price jump up to one equipped with 980M is (that is about 30% faster).
The 980 busts my budget, so I’m sticking with the 970. Wish I could get the 980.
Good evening,
Getting a laptop (already have a desktop) so I can play with my spouse. Knowing nothing about laptops I did some research, but help is always appreciated. The two I am looking at are:
MSI GE72 Apache Pro Gaming Laptop
Processor: Intel® Core™ i7-6700HQ Mobile Processor
Memory: 8GB [8GB x 1] 2133MHz DDR4 SO-DIMM Laptop Memory
Video Card: NVIDIA GeForce GTX 970M 3GB GDDR5
Solid State Drive: 120GB Intel 535 Series M.2 SSD
Primary Hard Drive: 500 GB 7200rpm Super Slim Laptop Hard Drive
ASUS ROG G752VT-RH71
Processor: Intel® Core™ i7-6700HQ Mobile Processor
Memory: 16GB [8GB x 2] 2133MHz DDR4 SO-DIMM
Video Card: NVIDIA GeForce GTX 970M 3GB GDDR5 [G752]
Solid State Drive: 120 GB Intel 540s Series SSD
Primary Hard Drive: 120GB Intel 535 Series SSD*
I’ve been playing on an old Sony Vaio which is heating up a bit too much and honestly old. I am leaning towards the ASUS as I heard it has better cooling. Budget wise I want to keep it around 1500, but under 2K.
What are your thoughts on these two, or if these are awful what would you suggest?
Thank you!
I will try this out, thanks for the suggestions.
Hello,
Looking for some assistance soloing this boss fight. If this should be moved to Engi forum, please do so. Any suggestions on how to approach this? So far I have tried:
- Staying on the Menders and let the NPCs whittle the statue
- Same as above but doing quick runs when I can to help with the statue
- Rifle and turrets to deal with the Menders
- Hounds of Balthazar in a moment of sheer desperation (although it was funny to see the flames from the Hounds sucked towards the statue )
I am a casual player at best, so any guidance is appreciated. Thanks!
Why kill her?
When Anet finally decide to finish all this nonsense, put her in a cage and allow players throw rotten eggs at her.
You know I would enjoy this as a random thing we can do. Change it up by her occasionally throw eggs back at you. Taunt emotes can be used . . . I’d be up for this.

That said, I still think Anise is a colossal jerkstain for pulling that stunt with the Rytlock illusion, both towards Logan AND towards Rytlock. I’d like to see her flippant use of a famous charr tribune’s form and voice, especially as an enemy, to have some diplomatic fallout. She just reeks of poncy, spoiled, egotisticial noble who thinks she can get do whatever she wants. Seeing someone like that get ripped a new one once in her life would be so very sweet
I would want to see the motivation behind Anise’s actions first, is she playing a deeper game? If so what? If she was just toying with Logan “for fun” the she should see some repercussions to her actions.
The other question I have is that during the Queen’s Speech Anise is very challenging towards Logan, which is a different tone from what I saw in the human PS.
You always got the impression she was keeping secrets, which makes sense, but I never sensed the . . . I wouldn’t call it outright hostility, but cooled tone towards Logan that I’m seeing now in the Living Story. I’m interested in seeing how that will play out.
Hello again,
I finally beat Windcaller tonight, wanted to share build/how in case there are other poor engi souls such as myself that were stuck forever.
Traits: 0/30/10/30/0
Rifle w/Flame Thrower, Elixir U, Elixir Gun, and Supply Crate
No food or stacks.
I tried hitting her with Rifle to knock her our right away dropped Supply Crate. When she would catch on fire, I hit her with Flame Thrower, knocking her back as much as I could, and switching off to Elixir Gun on occasion.
Thanks again to all who offered their help, I do appreciate it. (At this rate thought I doubt I’ll get my mini)
Thanks all for the responses, I’m going to try some of this tonight, but did have some follow ups/questions:
What I did was use a Static Discharge/Turret build, but it was a close thing and full of “Argh! kittening tornadoes!”
Thinking back, I’d probably have used Elixir X (for the stability) and hoped to get the Rampage form in order to blitz as much damage into her as possible.
Kittening tornaoes has been my mantra, I did try Elixir X, but the damage was not as high as I hoped.
. . . Also go for vitality and condition dmg. When you get the chance, burst his face full of granades. … Engies are so horible when it comes to stability :/. I envy human engineers with avatar with stability :P
How would I boost up Vitality? Food or is this something I should tweak with traits? I redid my traits focusing on alchemy and firearms. I happen to be a human engi, the Avatar of Stability did not do much damage, although it kept me up.
Go condition damage.. . .
What would you use in addition to Elixir S for the utitilites?
Again thanks for responding, I do appreciate it.
Hello,
I have been having a hard time finding any tips for dealing with Windcaller in the Queen’s Gauntlet (w/o any gambits). Only once have I gotten even close to winning the match, the rest of the time I am batted around the cage by tornadoes and gust.
I am primarily a PvE casual player, so don’t really have any depth of knowledge on builds, etc. I have tried combinations of Elixir Gun and Pistols or Rifle. Net Turret, Flame Turret.
Any thoughts or suggestions would be very much appreciated.
Thanks!
Something is going to float in on one of these hot air balloons.
No, not Team Rocket
I for one would love to see Team Rocket’s balloon descend on Divinity’s Reach. However I agree with those who say Caudecus and allies plot Vs. the queen using the clockwork guards. And hopefully we will finally see this rival who has a beef with the PC and why.
Also I’m sorry for that, but… Delaqua, Velazquez… Am I the only one seeing similarities in those surnames? Doern was even hinting something that he’s Canthan.
I thought Cantha was Asian-themed. Velazquez is more Hispanic sounding and Delaqua, that sounds French to me, but it may be a made up surname, not sure.
As for Doern, I’d have to go back and confirm, but I though he was from Elona, not Cantha.
Glint’s spawn has hatched from the egg and plots to kill us all!
After all some of us are probably great great grandkids of the adventurers who tried to kill Glint in the first GW!
My vote is for Shiny, probably upset at being stuck in the Hidden City this whole time.
Were we supposed to get a hint of the Nemesis in F&F? The most suspicious person I thought was the consortium, but I never came across anything that made an obvious point to nemesis.
Kai Darkness.5801, thanks for your response earlier, I appreciate it.
Its been a while since I did the initial content. When was the personal nemesis mentioned? I don’t remember coming across that info, but I may have missed it.
