One thing I intend on adding to the list once the patch hits is that I will put a * In front of all builds that were prior the patch until they are updated (unless there are no mesmer changes but lets face it there will no doubt be a 5 page nerf list).

So people can easily see which builds are up-to-date and which builds might not be accurate anymore and should be approached with that in mind. It should safe people time figuring out which builds are still viable or that might not work as intended and hopefully get you theorycrafters to update all your builds and topics to at least say it’s up-to-date

They moved one outside of the wall now (see first picture), It’s being done with the guardian skill Ring of Warding as I saw some people trying to place them back where they were using this skill but it’s such a time consuming thing someone must be VERY determined.

I tried replicating it on my guardian so I could give a more in depth description and it seems if the line of the ring is just at the vendor it knocks them over and back a bit. As if the game tells them they can’t stand there (see second picture).

I know this is going to sound shocking but… I don’t have a phone :/
(And no I’m not an old lady I’m 25 :P The one I had broke but I never even used it so being poor it’s not an investment I’m able to make or therefore worth making)

Are there any keyring type authenticators being worked on? I always preferred these regardless as you aren’t tied down to a phone that might break or be hacked itself (not to mention the annoyance of batteries running out).

I really hope so as I’d really like to add another layer of security to my account

AP says nothing. I have two accounts and on one I have something like 1k and the other 10k so when people see me on the 1k account and use the AP as experience indicator they will be completely wrong. I’ve also never bothered to actively get achievements. I only get them as I do things or if I feel like doing one specifically.

But the amount of time I spend on the game will be more similar to those who got 15k/20k. So I never use AP as an indicator. I look at how well people play the game or at least appear to know what they are doing.

I have to say I would really like to see this as well. The pets keep getting left behind as you explore the world and if you deposit all collectibles by accident with a pet not in an invisible bag it’s gone into your bank. It just makes taking pets along undesirable because:

A. You forget to use them
B. They don’t keep up with you and if going into a new zone de-spawn all together
C. Get deposited into bank if not careful and take up bag space making it cluttered.

It would be nice if you could spawn any pet at any time from your collection, that they keep up with you even if you speed up and that they get equipped under the gear section rather than an item in your bag.

Love the idea of a beginner selection guide except I don’t entirely agree with your summary of the mesmer profession. I would’ve made it more like this:

Beginner friendly: *
Weapon of Choice: Greatsword or Staff & Sword + Pistol (Focus for WvW only)
Essential utility skills: Blink, Signet of Inspiration, Decoy, Mirror Images (In PvE swap last two for nullfield and feedback), Timewarp

Most of mesmer abilities are about surviving, you survive by hiding behind clones, using CC’s, teleports, stealth. So I would definitely put three * * * in survivability.

That said I would definitely not call mesmers beginner friendly or even average, they are hard to master and don’t really come into their own till they have access to higher level traits. Not to mention to play one well isn’t easy. We have lots of survivability but to use it effectively is another matter requiring impeccable reflexes, timing and skill/utility management.

I would also recommend putting staff there as a good choice because it gives a lot more added survivability for newcomers than a greatsword does. It’s kind of more a personal preference whether someone prefers condition/support or power playstyle.
Utility is a bit trickier because it depends a lot on whether you go for a power build, condition or support build as well as whether it’s pvp or pve.

I would say signet of inspiration is a pretty safe bet for a newcomer as it gives boons passively and when used copies your boons to those around you. Blink is very much a must for newcomers it’s great for stun-breaking and getting out of trouble much easier than portal or veil would.

Then both decoy and mirror images are great for actually confusing enemies and if not at least for extra shatter material. Though if it’s in PvE dungeon settings you’d want to go for more supportive utillity like nullfield and feedback as decoy or stealth abilities will be mostly useless.

To put it short, mesmers are very utility and trait depended specialists. What weapons you use and what gametype you play as well as which roll you prefer to fulfill (damage/condition/support) alter what traits you would pick and what utility you’d equip entirely and therefore you’d work your utility and traits around your preferred gameplay style & weapon choices rather than the other way around.

You can see why I would put only one * for beginner friendly. It’s very complex to fully get your head around the profession and get the best out of them.

I’ve renamed the sPvP Athena build ’Fay’s Build’ after it was given that nickname during this Arenanet Livestream and was also used during this Mistleague match. I’m planning to record some of my sPvP matches soon to show the build in action.

English is superior, most folk in europe know english, like it or not it’s the most common tongue. And not all of us who speak english are from the uk. There are other countries in europe, believe it or not. I don’t see any french, german or spanish person trying to speak norwegian, or bulgarian or any other of them other “lesser” languages. And those folk already did their bit and learned english. Now they have to learn spanish, and french and german cause god forbit the spaniards, the germans and the french learn anything other than their native languages. So it’s not MY language they have to learn, but A language that the rest of europe uses to communicate. Unless of course everyone not french, german or spanish is beneath them or something. In which case they should get their own server and not mingle with us peasants from the rest of europe.

That doesn’t make it ‘superior’ that just makes it more commonly used. Superior indicates it being better than, which it is not, just different. There is a vast difference between superior and more commonly used.

I sincerely dislike it when people who complain about and look down their nose at other languages and cultures as if they expect everyone else to speak the same as them just because theirs is the most popular and therefore ‘superior’.

Less popular languages are just as valid as English. It doesn’t take that much effort to google translate simple phrases. You’re part of a multi-lingual world, it’s important to be respectful of other peoples languages and it’s only sensible to approach another person by speaking their language rather than expecting them to speak yours. It just comes down to respect.

I think it’s discourteous to expect everyone to heel to your own language ‘just’ because it’s the most popular. Excuses like “Oh because they do x y z too” just falls short for me. Learn to get along, and that goes for all sides, it’s not that hard if people weren’t so stubborn and acted so superior.

If you want people to try to speak your language to you when they approach you, you should do the same in return to begin with, eye for an eye.

Guess I might be a minority with that opinion…. oh well, that’s a shame.

The point is that Portal is arguably far too strong of a skill already, and giving the Mesmer faster move speed would make the former even stronger which isn’t desirable. Yes, even out of combat move speed boost.

They could do fun stuff with it though. Like, replace Portal with “Signet of Portal”. Passive effect : +25% move speed. Active effect : same as currently except it becomes “Signet of Portal Exeunt” with passive effect : -33% move speed

I personally don’t think portal is too strong. It’s perfect the way it is now. It’s one of the few useful skills mesmers have when running with a zerg that really makes any significant difference to a fight.

We are completely useless when it comes to taking a keep since we only have a couple of abilities that can hit people on walls (Unless they are stupid enough to stand too close to the edge). Other than timewarp on golems. But since that it’s an Elite skill with a big cooldown we’re basically just standing around on look out for incoming enemies etc. Majority of the time.

Portal and stealth is great for zerg on zerg action so I don’t think it’s overpowered. If you don’t keep an eye out for portal bombs it’s your own mistake. Portals are very obvious and bright. Easy to see. As long as you always anticipate a portal bomb you can take steps to prevent it from succeeding.

The only problems with portal at the moment are to do with culling issues and it’s hard to distinguish an enemy portal from an ally one.

I do wish they were more specific us poor Europeans have to stay up all night or get up early just wish we knew which :/

Great build Fay! Mantras have always looked pretty interesting to me, so I may have to give this a shot, when I can collect the gear!

I do have a slightly off-topic question though: Earlier you were discussing Mantra of Recovery, and I was wondering if it was worth using even with no traits into mantras, in comparison to our other heals?

I looked into the question in regards to healing on a mesmer in an earlier post:

Mantra of Recovery = 10.8k every 15 seconds (With RM trait) – 8k (Without RM trait)
Ether fest = 7.7k every 20 seconds (depended on whether you have 3 clones up or not)
Mirror = 4k every 15 seconds

I personally feel that Mantra of Recovery is the best Mesmer heal because even without the 3x mantra trait and Restorative Mantra trait you can still use the heals regardless of situation and you aren’t depended on having clones up and the cooldown is faster but the downside of course is the charge.

That said I feel that if you don’t us either the 3x mantra trait or Restorative mantra trait both Ether or Mantra are fine depending on what you prefer. Whether you prefer to charge or get clones up they’re both effective and good in different ways.

Good luck with trying out a mantra build I had some positive feedback so far from various mesmers that whispered me so it’s certainly worth a try if it intrigues you.

I never played GW1 so I don’t know what the old emotes were like, All I can say is that I would like to see more of them.

There are multi-guild guilds and guilds who don’t allow for guild hopping reasons:

Community: Maintaining a solid active community within guild wars 2 requires, you can guess activity. If people represent other guilds then they aren’t contributing to solidifying the guilds community.

Influence: For the guild to provide guild bonuses they require influence which is only gained from members that represent.

Loyalty: It’s an extension of community, but it’s still very important. Why be in a guild if you don’t want to spend all your time with them? As a guild leader I’m loyal to my members, dedicated. I expect everyone to be the same at least somewhat. It makes for a stronger community. Why should I be the only one to dedicate all my time to work hard for the guild if my members just take advantage of the ‘perks’ yet not contribute accordingly?

There’s plenty of guilds who allow guild hopping. If that’s what you want you can seek those out but don’t start raging at guild leaders trying to keep their guild strong if you do not understand their position.

Guilds and it members share responsibility for the guild, if you just want to do whatever you want to do with whomever you want to do it with then that’s your prerogative but guilds aren’t all about ‘you’ it’s about ‘us’

Edit: At least guilds focused on social communities, not specialized guilds which the guild hopping system is designed for.

100% agree with OP, The only thing I would add to it is that they need to improve scaling for lvl 80’s in exotic/ascended gear as some of the fights are so easy because your team is too powerful.

I would love them to be scaled down more towards lvl 35 in all greens or maybe rares. At the moment it feels like you are three times as effective wearing full exotics which makes some of the fights feel dull and redundant but if you’d make those fights too hard then it would be impossible for lvl 35’s so, scale the gap more appropriately I’d say Still give full exotics a tiny advantage but make it really tiny not a mile as it is currently.

That or make another difficulty level for those of us who like more of a challenge and then pugs can still do their farming and speed runs.

Number one tip: Don’t rush leveling to 80! This is the number one mistake people make that come from other games (If you did play other MMO’s). Just take your time, explore, enjoy the game. Level 80 will be the same kind of stuff except you have more freedom of choice and access to more things but there is no kind of ‘rush to end-game to experience the fun stuff’ kind of grind thing.

If you take it easy and enjoy the world, maybe talk to NPC, look in nooks and crannies, and you’ll find it’s a lot more diverse and interesting than most other MMO’s with a lot of surprises and secrets waiting to be uncovered! and the best part you will gain xp and rewards for EVERYTHING! Have fun!

I agree that it’s a very situational skill and for it to be a number 3 skill it seems almost like a waste. Often it doesn’t remove the boons you really want to remove from NPC or enemies either because of it being random. It would make more sense if it removed 3 boons or more but keep the small radius.

It would make it worthwhile and make more sense in my opinion. I rarely touch my number three skill because I don’t often find a need for it, Especially in PvE. I find myself using it more for a quick extra burst damage.

Alternatively make it so it prioritises certain boons so depending on which boons there are it’ll pick the most important ones to remove first. Like regeneration (since we have lack of poison) – swiftness (since we are severely lacking in speed buffs) – stability (would make sense with nr 5) – protection – retaliation – fury – might – vigor… you know what I mean something like that.

The question really is, why does it matter?

I see loads of guys that play light armoured professions and I see plenty of woman play heavy or medium armoured professions.

I main a mesmer and play thief as secondary. I like the agility of those professions, what type of armour they wear is irrelevant.

People are too caught up with gender stereotypes. Everyone likes something different, doesn’t really matter why or what gender you are as long as you enjoy playing what you do.

There is also no way to get statistics on this anyway so you could never get a clear picture of what a particular gender prefers and again who cares it isn’t important
