Risk Vs Reward: Reward what Reward?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Theftwind.8976

Looking at the risk versus reward literally take anyone of the hearts for an example. NPC tells you that “there is a band of outlaws rustling my cattle. Could you do something about them? I can reward you!” ’ So off you go to do battle with the bandit boss and his henchmen and come back for that promised reward of ….. a handful of copper coins.

Now consider that a slab of red meat goes for three copper and by the size of those cows one should be able to get at least 100 slabs of red meat from one of them it makes one want to go help the outlaws!

Like many people in this thread, you are not correctly diagnosing the problem. The problem is the stat itself, not how well so-and-so can still do with it.
No the problem is with gearcentric people thinking their way to play is the only way to play. I am diagnosing the problem quite well as I dig further to find a root cause and the root cause is not mf wearing people. The root cause is expecting everyone to be as good as the next person to insure that COF run can be done in record time so it can be posted on you tube and bragged about.

Magic Find - What I don't like

Theftwind.8976

You don’t understand the difference. Being slowed down is not the problem. It’s the reason for being slowed down.
They are slowing the group down entirely for selfish reasons.
So the better representation of the qualification is thus: I don’t want to group with MF users because they slow us down on purpose.
And if you take issue with that then I must assume that you have no problem with true leechers, those who do nothing in order to mooch off of the rewards. Because they are slowing you down by doing nothing, and they are doing it on purpose.
But how do I know, without the slightest bit of doubt, that they are doing it on purpose to slow me down and therefore deserve to be labelled? There is no way to know that unless you are sitting in that person’s head, especially in an internet game where you cannot see and interact with that person face to face. Just keep the labels out of your arguments. Labels that describe others game choices are a poor way to promote a discussion. I resent for example the term “noob”. “We failed that dungeon run because that noob did not do such and such”. We were all “noobs” at one time just as we all have our own selfish wants and desires.

So with your above example on leechers I would simply tell that person, “sorry your game play style slows me down, I cannot accept you in my group and I wish to get through this dungeon quickly” versus “You cannot come with me on this dungeon run because you are a leecher and slow me down on purpose”.

Why have profanity filter? An answer

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Theftwind.8976

Theftwind.8976

The profanity filter is there to protect ANET from people who are offended by foul language. They can simply say that there was a filter in the game and that you have the option to turn it on so they are not legally obligated because someone is offended by such language. The existence of the filter does not give you carte blanche to swear. Offensive language is still frowned upon and is punishable. It is not there to protect an individual from seeing profanity just to protect the company from any repercussions as a result of that profanity.

It always makes me wonder however when people try to defend the use of cuss words in a game by stating “I have a foul mouth and swear all the time in real life”. There is a difference however. If I hit my thumb with a hammer you would probably here an expletive deletive coming from me, but that is an involuntary response to pain or another stimulus. Swearing in a computer game, using a type chat interface (not a voice chat) is no longer an involutary response. You have to make a conscious effort to type that swear word in which is why you have no defense when you get banned for using profanity, as it takes a conscious effort to use it and is not an involuntary response.

Lack of Recognition for Legendary Crafters

Cheating and its effect on the game

in WvW

Posted by: Theftwind.8976

Theftwind.8976

Before I begin this I would like to ask anyone that replies to do the following:

1) Do not post names of people
2) Do not post names of Guilds or Servers
3) Do not post examples that you are aware of

This is just to open a discussion on what cheating does in a game and what type of enforcement and feedback that is or should be required.

We do know that cheating goes against the Code of Conduct and probably all agree that cheaters should be banned for life. Most of us know how to report a blatant cheat or abuse/exploit of a game mechanic and most of us do. However that is where things fall apart.

The community has no affirmation of whether or not a cheater has been investigated and punished. Many discussions on this forum, other forums or in-game revolve around the fact that people have reported someone a number of times but the behavior continues. If there is no feedback to the person reporting and if the behavior still occurs then the reporting person gets frustrated, comes to these forums and ends up being censured.

We cannot and should not bury our heads in the sand pretending that such illicit behavior does not happen in the game. It does happen, in this game and in every other game I have played going back to the days of public dial ports and BBS’s. The less feedback the community receives on the issue of cheating, either on these forums or visually in-game the more empowered cheaters feel to continue what they are doing.

A form letter that your “complaint has been received and is being reviewed” is useless without any followup on whether or not what you have seen and reported was a case of actual cheating or abuse or a misconception on your part. That lack of feedback is hurtful to the people that actually care about the game and face it, we would not be complaining or posting about exploits and cheating if we did not care about the game. Those that use cheats, abuse exploits or outright hack do not care about the game, they care about themselves. However there is a growing feeling in the game from many people I have spoken with that a blind eye is being turned to these people. Whether that is true or not is something we will never know due to the lack of any feedback.

If I report a behavior that I believe is a cheat/hack/exploit I want more then just a “thank you” for reporting. I want to know if what I reported was in fact a cheat/hack/exploit and not just an erroneous observation on my part and I want to know if the person has been punished. After all I do care about the game and I do not care about cheaters. The majority of players play the game without cheating but that majority is becoming more and more disillusioned and the minority that do cheat are becoming bolder and more blatant in their actions.

Something as simple as a point modifier would fix most of the complaints. For example Stonemist gives a server 35 points per tick. (to keep it simple I will use a 10:1 multiplier)

Capture SM when you are outnumbered 10:1 you gain 350 points.
Capture SM when you outnumber the opponent 10:1 you get 3.5 points
Capture SM when you and your opponent are evenly matched you get the original 35 points.

Do the same while you are defending SM. With a modifier based on the current online population of a given server the score would be closer and not based solely on the size of the zerg that can be fielded. They already know the populations that are on each map at any given moment. If 10 defenders can fight off a 40 man zerg complete with 4 or 5 golems then those defenders should be rewarded accordingly. That 40 man zerg BETTER succeed or they just hand the defenders a pile of points.

Taking 40 people to a sparsely defended BL to zerg everything just before the next point tick is not what I would call sporting.

As I tend to roam a lot solo to recap camps, etc. it is frustrating to have a camp almost capped and three or four enemy rush in to ninja it. Many times I could handle those three or four but not when they rally while I am fighting the others as I cannot spare the time to stomp the downed players.

The mechanic does not reward the better player, it rewards the larger group.

Someone will have to stay in each tower and at least 2 in each keep in order to be able to stop an attack and that does not leave anyone for camps. As there will be no white swords 2 people can open up an upgraded keep by setting a cata in an out of the way spot forcing a defender to continually monitor all walls and gates for damage. May as well kiss upgrading anything goodbye as there is no way in hell I am going to spend my silver to upgrade if there is no chance to defend it.

Theftwind.8976

One thing I would like to see changed alittle is the ease it is for players to destroy siege on the wall without using siege. Due to the width of the walls, Ele/Necro just destroy any well placed siege setup at a tower.

I totally agree with the above point. If you place siege on the walls where it is useful during an attack it is easily destroyed by AoE. If you place the siege further back you are unable to target anyone with that siege. Prime example is the ballista. A ballista is almost useless to place on a wall as the LoS on a ball makes it impossible to shoot over the wall lip to the ground unless the enemy is away from the wall. Well if they are that far back they are not doing much damage are they?

LoS issues have to be fixed. Enemy can shoot me on the wall but my view of the same target that is firing at me is “obstructed”. And that “obstruction” is so inconsistent that it makes it difficult for any new player to WvW to survive until they learn that they can stand “here” but if they move two steps “there” they will get killed.

Walls should be wider, perhaps a wide inside ledge that would allow for siege placement out of AoE range. Remove the outer ledge completely. You stand there and you can easily target ground enemies but you are also fair game yourself. Force attackers to use siege to take down siege and not a zerg ball of AoE artists that can stand in one spot so only 5 can be hit while wiping out any siege that could possibly do them harm.

Theftwind.8976

So what could they do to show us they are actually investigating and acting on cheats/exploits/hacks?

1) Create a Dev only postable sub forum for Cheats/Hacks/Exploits. No replies or discussions are allowed.

2) If they receive a report that person C in Guild BC on Server ABC was cheating and if they found out after investigation that no cheat was involved they can post exactly like that. "Person C, Guild BC, Server ABC was reported to be cheating. Here is a description (sanitized) of the behavior observed and after investigation the specific behavior is possible under certain conditions and is not a cheat/hack/exploit.

3) Person Z, Guild YZ. Server XYZ was reported flying into a Keep and porting Guildmates in. After review they could post that yes it was a hack, Person Z has been perma-banned and Guild YZ have all been suspended for 7 days.

Now reading reports 1 and 2, I as a player will know that the first behavior is not a cheat/hack/exploit and will not report that specific behavior in the future thus lowering their workload. I will also know that the second behavior by Player Z was a hack and that there were serious consequences for his actions which included everyone involved. Anyone thinking of doing the same in the future will have second thoughts.

My frustration level is lowered, the amount of actual cheating is reduced, and players have a better understanding of what is possible within the game design. To me a Win, Win, Win or WWW situation.

I did not read the complete thread but from the OP’s first post…

“Every time i see a staff ele i force myself not to vote kick it from a dungeon, instead i grind my teeth and watch it how he/she spams fireballs with no attument switch ever and then die max range from all of us. "

Well excuse me Mr. Perfect but if you spend so much time watching to see if a staff ele switches attunements then exactly how much are you contributing to the effort? I have used my staff ele numerous times against bosses and although I tend to stay in fire I will swap to water for healing purposes then back to fire. Since it takes 10 seconds to swap back into fire after swapping out then you would have to be focusing your attention on your party bar to see what attunement the ele is in for 10 seconds at a time.

Edit: Ever stop to think that perhaps the reason the staff ele died at range is that they spent their time in water to heal the group instead of themselves? Of course you did not think about that as it is about you!

By the way I have 9 level 80s and am quite aware of how each of the professions work!

At first I had my Guardian in, that thief went down and at no time was my Guardian ever under 50% health. I was even rezzing teammates while that thief was trying to down me, he could not do so. Later I had my necro in and a few wells and marks and the thief quickly left the area. Finally I brought my own thief in and since my thief is not a D/D glass cannon build the enemy again went down and he could not kill me. A thief played by someone who is very quick on the keys and knows what he is doing is difficult to kill but then so is ANY profession when played by someone who knows what they are doing and is adept on the keys.

So I can head over to an enemy keep, find an obscure portion of wall, set up a catapult and take the wall down and then call in the zerg to take over the keep. This change will force servers to have someone stationed as all assets and therefore it brings up the question of reward for those people guarding that asset. Without a reward of some sorts for sitting at a tower for hours on end watching for individuals such as mentioned above who is going to be willing to take the task on? Stonemist will be interesting as there is alot of external wall at that castle where one or two people can set up a catapult and bash away.

This change is going to make for some interesting times. The servers that have the numbers to spread out will not be affected as much as smaller servers that at times have maybe 10 people on any map.

Seriously, how do you deal with thieves?

in WvW

Posted by: Theftwind.8976

Theftwind.8976

With my Guardian I usually come out victorious against thieves. I have taken out 3 thieves at once, although they were rather lousy thieves, with only a camp supervisor to assist me. Larcenous strike thieves are not that difficult as long as you know the timings on a thief’s stealth mechanisms and can recognize which form of stealth he is using at any given moment. Using GS and switching to Staff #1 is a great way to have enough AOE for those stealth moments.

On occasion, against an adept thief, I will just log out my Guardian and bring in my own thief. I have found that thieves that are built for stealth absolutely hate going up against another thief and they eventually give up and leave the area.

There is no reason why a competent Guardian should not be able to take out an equally skilled thief. It does get more difficult going up against an exceptionally skilled thief but it is still possible to come out ahead. I dare say with my Guardian I have killed more thieves then I have been killed by thieves.

Although I have two sets of exotics, one with MF, and I do not use my MF gear when running dungeons or fractals I do take offense at calling people that do selfish. Think about this carefully. You want people to wear optimal gear so you can complete a dungeon run as fast as possible so you have time to do it again. We have people insisting only zerker gear be used on these runs, we have people requiring gear checks and denying anyone with magic find.

These people are being just as selfish as those that want to wear mf gear. They want it their way or the highway and I would run a dungeon with somebody that wished to wear their mf gear over elitist snobs like that any day of the week because in the end it is about the other persons enjoyment of the game and I do not, nor does anyone else, have the right to dictate how other people enjoy their game. If it takes longer to run the dungeon so what? As long as everyone enjoys the game in the manner they want to. Only those with their own selfish agendas would insist everyone be outfitted the way they are.

Those “gearcentric” people are by far the more selfish people.

I run with the Ancient Karka Shell which has a 3% inherent magic find. I also have Lunaria, Circle of the Moon with an inherent 4% magic find. That is on 2 of my dungeon pieces. Oh my bad, I must be greedy and selfish to run dungeons with those pieces equipped! Can anyone tell me how less effective I am in a dungeon because of that 7% mf? I am good at math but I must be missing a decimal point or two to get people so wound up, right? How much MF am I allowed before you boot me from your group and call me selfish? 0%, 10%? How many minutes would I slow you down by having mf on those 2 pieces? If you allow those two pieces or other ascended gear with an inherent mf does that make you hypocritical or do you arbitrarily set a limit with each dungeon run? Perhaps you should tell me exactly what type of gear I should be running? Better yet, perhaps you should play my game for me! After all it seems that is what you are doing!

Seems a bit harsh doesn’t it? However calling people selfish because they want to enjoy a game their way (after all they did pay for it) is just as bad. I do not care if you want to run dungeons with no mf in the party, your choice, you paid for the game. What bothers me to no end is you feel you have the right to label people selfish and greedy because of your own personal desires.

By the way. when farming I swap those 2 pieces out out for 2 pieces with 7% mf each and with only my gear and 25 stacks of luck I run with 121% mf and can boost it to over 200%

Shufflepants, there are different types of RNG used in the gaming industry such as what Deniara stated above. As someone with a degree in mathematics you should also know that by their very design some of those generators will result in a better random distribution then others.

So yes random is random when you are tossing a non-loaded, 6 sided die from a cup but weight that die on one side and it is no longer quite as random. What people are saying here is that depending on what type of rng is being used in Gw2 and exactly how that specific rng has been implemented that the die you are tossing could very well be weighted on one side. Now if you have the first die and I am using the weighted die would our results over 1,000 rolls be the same?

The cost for that training will be 5 gold per person but wait, there is more! If you sign up before the end of the month I will cut the cost to only 4 gold per lesson!

I suppose however there is that fear factor involved from being alone for the first time. Sadly I cannot teach you courage, that is something you must do by yourself.

I truly believed that when I retired that I would no longer have to work night shifts. This going to bed at 3 or 4 am is unhealthy! By the time I get up the next day it is almost too late to go fishing…or golfing…or chasing the wife around the house….

The choir bells frustrate me to no end, I just do not have the patience nor the keyboard skills so I cheated. Yes, I will admit it, I cheated. The wife did hers first try, heard me cursing a blue streak, took pity on me, came over and sat down at my computer and did mine on the first try. Do you think this will get me banned?

- With the introduction of our new daily quests and keeping in mind Anets policy against farming all mobs killed in the “kill 40 of these” quests will drop no loot. The Agricultural marketing Board will be observing to ensure no mob breaks the rules.

- The Commander of the Infinite Coil Reactor was only giving his line “You know your failure is only funny if you tried” once every minute. This has been corrected to be once every 30 seconds as was intended.

- The inner gate to WvW Garrisons has long been a spot of contention as it would not upgrade to a reinforced gate. The gate has now been removed and replaced with love beads.

The event is scaled upwards as more and more people join the farm so scale the event back down each time the event fails. After two or 3 failures in a row, Champions will no longer spawn forcing the farmers to HAVE to complete the event in order for it to reset.
