I think the bigger misstep in marketing was the lack of character slot. It’s basically a neon sign saying “We’re really greedy and will squeeze you for every penny we can!”
This is quite laughable. I love the amount of people who think they’re entitled to free stuff just because they’re veterans . The only greedy people here are people asking for free stuff. You’re still paying the price for the expansion as everyone else. If you own the core game already since launch, GREAT! You have enjoyed 3 years of free updates and support for the game while you probably have stacked hundreds of thousands of hours for game who only have to pay once for. Not only that but the free updates and support will continue you to come before and after the expansion. /Thread
Marketing is a form of flirting with ur customer,,,,
and anet is not good in makeing eye contact

They’re already doing that.
Link because I see nothing on the announcement or in the FAQ. If true then there is no issue.
The current outcry is a perception of value, whereas this is more about deceptive business practices.
Quote: “We’ll most certainly help anyone out who just bought the core game and would like to make the change to a HoT pre-purchase.”
How nice of ANet to bury that info in a Reddit thread instead of putting it somewhere where people could see it, like… oh, maybe the preorder page! That’s such a great idea, but I’m sure they just missed it. Surely, they’re not hoping people will miss their chance for a refund. With the latest lack of shady practices on Anet’s part, it’s easy to believe in their good intentions.
Likewise, the expansion is probably missing an extra character slot to teach veteran players to use the gem shop. It’s like a tutorial!

With all the topics created since the HoT pre-order release came out, I don’t see how some of you are still trying to make light of this. Let’s revise the problems with this pre-release on HoT:
To those of you that have money and bought it, good for you. You have access to the Beta of an unfinished, uncertain expansion that is essentially the original game with less content, but no worries. I’m sure those extra toys you’ve gotten along will keep your mind away from that thought.
Please don’t defend this action with ‘Be grateful we don’t pay subscription fees for all the content they’ve handed to us’. We don’t owe Arenanet for that. We paid for the game, and we support its business model by using real money to buy things in the Gem Store. We’re glad they’ve given us free content over the years, but that doesn’t justify the price they’re asking for on an expansion with far less content. You can’t giveaway free things and then suddenly decide to charge for new content at a much higher price so you can get compensation for all that you’ve previously offered.
I honestly don’t know whose idea this was, and Paul’s little comment made it far worse than it should’ve been. All I know that this will not end well either way for Arenanet. Making changes now to benefit the veteran players will cause those who’ve pre-ordered the expansion at the current price to demand some sort of refund or compensation, and not making any changes will cause a loss of many veteran players who feel that they’ve been tricked.
Love the game, but not at all satisfied with this situation.
TL;DR I’m not buying the expansion as it is now, and there’s nothing I can do but wait. If no changes happen, and they continue down the road like this, I’m out. One whiny player out of their way will benefit the entire community, right? And no, you cannot have my things.
Thanks for reading. If I’m wrong, I’d love for it to be cleared up.
Off course it’s a great weapon. It says it right in the name.
Always a good way to mail people salt when they start to whisper you bad things.
I’m now going to carry around a stack of salt.
Why did I not think of this earlier ._.
I’ve even started a guild just for this – Salt Merchant [NaCl]. Comes with a nice little happy customer message too.
Sir Chan de Stroy, my attempt at a (circa 3rd crusade) Knight Hospitaller…he got lost on the way to Jerusalem, and ended up in the wrong Ascalon…
I just wish we had a decent bucket helm to play with…ascended was the best of a bad bunch.
I understand there’s some charr vendor in Lion’s Arch somewhere who sells apples. You might go look for him sometime. Though it might be finding the unfindable.
No, he’s just part of the level 30 personal story, named “Meeting my Mentor”. He doesn’t actually sell apples, and you have to be inside the personal story instance to see/interact with him. He’s just supposed to be an “undercover” Priory agent who’s cover is selling apples — that he doesn’t actually sell.

Shh, don’t explain the inexplicable.
“Lv1-40 is terrible.”
Yep, all the feedback ArenaNet need to change things :/
You could of course just read what people write instead of chosing to be smug and uninformed.
I thought the greatest fear was the “Downed State”?
I think the bigger problem is the fact players need to be rewarded to show kindness. If I can rez someone without getting myself killed, I will. I do it because it’s the decent thing to do and I will continue to do it on that reason alone. I understand the idea behind the OP and I sympathize, but it’s the people behind the computer screens that need fixing, and that is something Anet can’t fix.
My personal rule of thumb is:
For Basic/Fine/Masterwork items, use Crude/Basic/Copper-Fed Salvage-o-Matic.
For Rare items, use Master/Mystic Salvage Kits.
For Exotic items, use Black Lion Salvage Kits, or Master/Mystic Kits if you don’t have them.
I am so excited about this exciting blog post of excitingness!
You see, for years I have struggled, often crying myself to sleep at night, with my failure to teach my dog how to play Guild Wars 2.
As clever of a girl she is, she just couldn’t grasp that downed state. It was just too overwhelming. But now I see the light at the end of the tunnel! Thanks to these wonderful features coming in September, I can finally explore Tyria with my best canine friend.
In fact, I’m sure if I can convince a couple of chickens from the neighbourhood to pick up the game, we could even form a dungeon team in a couple of weeks. It’s just that easy!
…
Tsssk, as a veteran I have to say fowl play Anet. At this point, do you give a cluck about us still? Because you’re really ruffling some feathers.
Anet’s goals seem a bit scrambled, but the yoke is on us.
The Overgrown and Mordrem look exactly the same. To me, it’s no different than how Risen are sometimes labeled as “Undead” or “Orrian”. Such as the grubs, which have all three names (Orrian Grub, Undead Grub, and Risen Grub).
Don’t forget Jeff Grub(b)!
And now for my just-turned-80 asura engi. She got a new hairstyle and outfit to celebrate, and I think she is perfectly adorable!
- Chest: Priory chest
- Shoulders: T3 Asura cultural
- Legs: T1 Asura cultural
- Gloves: T1 Asura cultural
- Boots: Council Watch boots (from CM dungeon armor)
it just breaks the tension of the game, we are hunting down a deadly murderer and these two are just going on about how much they love each other. Anet sure know how to turn two potentially interesting characters into two obnoxious characters.
Except what you are saying simply isn’t true.
If you look at the dialogue from Cornered, the story instance where we are chasing the murderer you will see not a single piece of their dialogue is directed towards each other. http://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/Cornered#Dialogues
And from the other story instances we are looking at one brief conversation in Fallen Hopes which amounts to Marjory saying “I’m okay now so no need to worry about me” and a couple of lines of dialogue in the first instance where Kasmeer is being overly protective and offering to take Marjory’s watch. The word Love isn’t mentioned once that I can recall.
This is why a lot of people criticizing the Marjory/Kasmeer relationship are called homophobic because they rely on blatant misrepresentations of the storyline to prove their points, which is usually the tactics of those with ulterior motives.
Kasmeer “Listen. I’m sorry about how I’ve been acting. I just can’t stand the thought of you getting hurt again. That scared the fluff out of me.”
Marjory “I know, honey. I’ve felt the same way about you. But you convinced me that you can handle yourself. Now, let me convince you.”
Its that kind of stuff I find nauseating. I thinking, omg lets just keep going shall we, you can both apologize about each others mood swings later.
It actually reminded me of the Drought from GW1 Nightfall.
Exactly the same wiki, aricle, scrolled to the very bottom, see also links:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dry_quicksand
Bit of a goof up, but quite common in fiction:
Prevalence
Quicksand may be found inland (on riverbanks, near lakes, or in marshes), or near the coast. A quicksand is often difficult to spot. When walking in the country, beware of black stretches of ground without vegetation and bright green expanses covered with moss.
So it doesn’t appear in desert areas. You need a lot of humidity for quicksand to form.
CONFIRMED: Ventari and Ronan had kids…. Wait.
As to the Elite Achievements section, this quote is troubling: " He gave examples like keeping all NPCs alive throughout the encounter or never falling to the boss." Never letting NPCs die? When has that ever worked in an MMO to the point that it was a fun thing to do? I am not talking about it mechanically working. I am talking about players being super stoked to do an escort mission and really enjoying it. Keeping NPCs alive has always been a chore in MMOs. Can we please do away with this notion that players find it enjoyable?
“Elite” achievement. Get good. Besides, most GW2 NPCs are pretty boss, so it shouldn’t be that hard. I remember when Teq was first updated, we used to kite the champs attacking the turrets to Rox and watch her kick kitten . She’d go all Mama Bear mode on them.
I did say, “When has it ever been fun?” and “I am not talking about it mechanically working…”. The point was, when has that ever been something players look forward to? Do you ever hear a player say, “Boy oh boy, that escort mission was a real hootenanny!”
You need more class selection and dyes
They are Account-bound.
Cloth needs to have a gathering function, similar to ore and wood. It’s really that simple. Since most cloth sources come from either an animal or plant, it wouldn’t be too unrealistic to use the sickle as it’s gathering tool.
Edit: (Had to grab this from my other post a few months back)
Examples:
Jute – Is made from a vegetable fiber. Add some plant nodes to the world, which can be harvested with the existing scythes, which give us jute scraps when harvested.
Wool – Comes from various animals. Technically ‘wool’ is from sheep, but goats and rabbits would suffice too. This might require an additional harvesting tool (sheers), although the scythe might work, but sheep and rabbits exist in the game already. Maybe make some of them into harvest-able ‘nodes’ and let us sheer some wool scraps from them.
Cotton – Also a plant. Would work similarly to jute.
Linen – Again, also a plant. Comes from the flax plant, so again could work like jute.
Silk – Comes from insect cocoons, typically the best known comes from a moth, but fro game purposes there are any number of furflies, and such which could potentially offer ‘cocoons’ for collecting.
Gossamer – The definition of this is ‘a spider’s web’ or ‘a very light, delicate material,’ so let us harvest it from certain spider’s webs.

Day 31….
My fellow survivors and I are still adrift on some forsaken ocean, forgotten in the wake of the Megaserver apocalypse. Morale is low. Many of us didn’t make it this long, leaping overboard with broken spirit and hoping the fates would see to give them a better life in the great beyond.
Our supplies have dwindled and soon we’ll have to draw straws to see who will be eaten for the others to survive.
With nary a devpost in sight to offer us hope I fear we will not last long.
I’m certain the captain has been lying about how much fresh water is left. I don’t think I’m going to make it.
Even though I did not care much for champion trains myself, the fact many people come here just to say how happy they are is pretty deplorable.
“Play how I want you to play” at it’s finest.
Good.
In some ways I think this is like EA’s move into mobile. Telling their customers “The new dungeon keeper wasn’t made for you, it was made for a new generation of fans”. Clearly, gw2 was not made to appease the people who played gw1. Maybe at one point that was the intention, but then some committee got ahold of it and now it’s just one big hot mess.
The game needs dynamic changes. Huge reworkings. Not skill balancing, not nerfing this skill and buffing that one, but big huge reworkings like when Blizz redid their starting zones with new missions and so on. The fact is, however, that if that ever happens in gw2, it will only happen when it is financially the only way left to survive. The vast majority of the things your real fans want (like the roleplayers you just screwed by taking their dyeable town clothes away, I don’t even RP but it’s clear that’s a jerk move aimed at the people who actually bother to buy your gems, and for what?) are never going to happen. You’re going to placate us with bits and pieces and hope it’s enough, and maybe it is enough for some out there. Maybe it’s enough for enough whales to keep buying those BL keys and keeping you going. I hope it is. I hope you manage to pull an expansion out in a year or two and give me someplace to actually wear those legendaries and be “proud” of them. As it is I look at that time spent as a complete waste of my life, and that’s not something I have ever felt about a game before. It’s something that really makes me re-evaluate where I want to spend my time and money, and that’s another sensation I’m not used to feeling from a game. I can name a few games I’ve played 1000+ hours of, and I have no regrets for them. No regrets for the hundreds of hours I sunk into gw1 at all. Then again, gw1 was never like “Hey break out your credit card and support me if you want bugfixes. You do really love me don’t you?”. The attempts at manipulation are transparent and unbecoming. I realize all mmo’s are skinner boxes to some extent, but you’ve really piled up the psychological impulses to buy (more! now! don’t you want the best stuff?!) in ways that are obnoxious and clearly visible. Everyone knows why the 5% listing fee doesn’t show up in the projected profits, and it’s no accident that it happened. The game is set up to make you waste money testing useless builds that require a full set of 20g armor+runes+sigils+this and that and oh you need more laurels and more this and more but you can skip it if you just. break. out. that. credit. card.
I know that this post will get flamed, and that’s cool, I don’t really plan on responding anyway, I just have wanted to express my displeasure with the direction this game has been taken for a long time, but today was finally a large enough, over-hyped letdown that I am uninstalling, and I wanted to say why before I go. I hope my criticism here has been constructive enough that it won’t simply be removed.
Yes, I spent 1000+ hours playing this game. However, that time has only made me increasingly positive that wherever you’re heading with it, it’s not going to be any place worth actually traveling to, and nothing I couldn’t find in 100 similar mmo’s, with new ones being released now on a near monthly basis. After 1000 hours, for someone to say “I don’t recommend that game, it’s a complete waste of time and a non-stop grind” is about the harshest criticism you could receive, but I don’t pretend that anyone that matters will actually see me pointing it out or care.
See you in a few weeks or whenever your new dragon comes out. Will not expect to be impressed. Feel free to prove me wrong on that one.
Thank you for your time, although, if I could go back to 2012 and do it all again, I would not have bothered to give you mine,
BFS
The other day, while I was sitting out of wvw (the only thing I like doing anymore in gw2) after a transfer, unable to actually play anything other than eotm, I thought about getting a new game. Maybe go back to WoW, maybe try some D3, oh, I know, Wildstar. I’ve heard a lot about Wildstar. I go to pre-purchase it, but it’s an NCSoft game. Right there beside gw2. People tell me NCSoft is just the distributor, but after the “experience” of feeling ignored for two years in gw2, instead of pre-ordering like I do just about every other game that comes out, I hesitated. Did I really want to give money to people related to this? Did I really want to set myself up for another game of “Well I’ve put 1000 hours into this so I might as well stick with it?”. And the answer was “No”. No I do not feel like getting mired into another unrewarding gaming experience that sees my wallet like it has a bullseye painted on it. The only devs I’ve ever not bought games from based on past reputation are Peter Molyneux and EA, if that gives you any indication of how low my opinion is at this point, but just being associated with ANet now is enough to make me put my credit cards away and move on.
I know people are going to point out that I got my money’s worth from gw2. Fair enough, I certainly did. But it’s not 2012 anymore, and we’re still playing 2012’s mmo. That’s really clear to a lot of people. I’ve played mmo’s since everquest 1, been playing muds since they were back on compuserve and AOL online “was” the internet to most people. Only in the most pay-to-win games do I see new people join and drop out like they do in gw2. I see many, many new people (low ap scores) buy the game, join a guild, play for 20 or 30 levels and quit. They don’t even bother to max a single character, because everyone in their guild has told them, repeatedly “There’s nothing to do at 80, leveling is the fun part”. They don’t believe it at first. Surely there’s more to it. But eventually, after they’ve been told by several people “No, really, there’s nothing special at 80 except more dungeons” it finally sinks in that they’ve totally wasted their $25/$50/whatever.
I want to support this company. I feel strongly, however, that whatever made gw1 great (seriously, that’s my all time fave mmo, you really outdid yourselves in a lot of ways) has been watered down and neutered into something boring, formulaic, and so startchy-clean and perfect looking that there isn’t a spec of dirt on a norn. Giant sweaty dudes wearing leather and carrying axes, killing things all day, but every single one gleams like the top of Mr. Cleans bald head. That was ok in 2004 with 2004-era graphics, it’s not ok a decade later.
I can’t do it anymore. Between the writing (those hiccups to break what laughably little tension there was in the Scarlett final scene are a perfect example), the family friendly until it’s painful art style, the npc’s in major cities constant spouting about how wonderful war is (as a veteran, “I had a dream about a war, I must go fight in it” is the single stupidest reason I’ve ever heard to volunteer to be a body bag, fantasy situation or no), and now this… modifying of things, instead of adding content, and acting like it’s something special… It’s the last straw for me for a while. I’ve put a lot of hours into this game, waiting for it to get good. It’s not getting good. I understand that now. This update has been upsetting to a large portion of your userbase, and I think most of them are going to sigh quietly and either go back to wvw or just move on to another game. Normally I would join them, but things have been wrong (to me) for so long here, and I’ve abided it patiently, that I feel I should speak up.
I’ll come back for the next LS event. I won’t expect there to be more than an hour or two’s worth of new content, and I will expect to grind that content until it gets boring because it will be the only thing there is to do in gw2 that I haven’t already grinded into the dirt.
There are a lot of people out there with 3x/4x/5x the achievement points than I do. People who never stopped defending you. If you go to reddit and mention that you’re disappointed with gw2 you’ll be downvoted to oblivion. It still took you two years to give those fans account-bound legendaries and account bound WxP. The phrase “battered spouse syndrome” comes to mind.
