OK, I set a challenge.

Since so many of you quote Yishis’ videos when suggesting Thief is OP…

Roll Thief – Yishis has kindly supplied his build to help.
When you’re ready, post your videos of how you dominate.

I guarantee that less than 1% of you will pull it off even after hundreds of hours of practice.

If it weren’t for the black (Neverwinter) vs white (GW2) background on the forums, I truly could not tell apart in which forum I am.

There are exactly… I mean EXACTLY the same threads on them:

“Thief is OP… Trickster rogue is OP… Nerf Stealth… Stealth is OP…. Rogues have too much damage…. Rogues have too much survivabiltiy… You only see rogues in PvP…. Nerf this class… Nerf… Nerf… Nerf…. Nerf…. Narf… Nurf… Nirf… Norf….”

One way to fix zergs.

If you ask me you need other ways to discourage 1 blob zerg,

First the maps needs to be 3 times as big as they currently are.

Secondly they need to add new objectives, like an outpost, that functions like a camp, with no gate but a surrounding wooden wall with several entrances, it doesn’t give points but give the holder a small stat boost on the map like 25+ in all stats (something like orbs, but only for the map, there could also be 1-3 outposts on the map aswell).

If the maps are bigger and have a few more objectives, 1 ball can’t protect it all and thus must split, small man groups will have something other than just camps to fight for. And if zergs wants to cap these stat points they will loose a lot of their time (either by the remote location of the outposts or a long capping time or even both)

These are but a few ideas i’ve been thinking about.

One way to fix zergs.

Guys, in case you haven’t noticed, my idea it’s not about removing zergs, nor about trashing them. I’ts about giving a consequence to them as a strategy used in exageration. That’s why I said “fixing”.

Right now, it’s like this:
- the bigger the zerg, the less-to-none chance enemies have against them, no matter how confusing and unskilled players it has.
- rolfstomping everything is faster, gets more rewards and with less effort than capturing at least half of the same things in smaller groups.
- the roflstomping zerg of 60+ probably wiped out most of the smaller groups (15~20 players) along the way.
- most of the times it’s not even worth upgrading things outside the prime-time of a server, since the enemy zerg can just roflstomp many keeps and towers faster than anyone else when we don’t have an allied zerg around – which gives too much advantage to servers that have zergs 24/7.
- people talk about AC’s beeing anti-zerg right now. Well, if zergs can’t handle the damage, then smaller groups can even less.

My ideia just gives one consequence to zerg: the more people it has, the harder it gets to capture a point. It gives a sense of balancing difficulty based on the number of players participating in the event.
What’s so bad about it? Do you still want to zerg up, use skill 1, no intelligence and no skill, killing everyone while roflstomping maps easily? With no challenge at all? and still call it fun?
That’s not massive scale PVP, that’s “carebear” PVP (I’m using this expression the same way many PVP players like to use it for PVE players because “PVE is easy”)

This idea also gives a chance to smaller groups to be more effective in many ways.
In the end, if a zerg can’t take out a Keep / Tower because it was too difficult and just a small group there could wipe them, then you can say they weren’t good or organized enough and they suffered the consequence of that decision – they lost so much time while they were at it that the enemy servers captured a lot of points from them.
BUT the consequence itself gets smaller if the attacking zerg is very organized and has very few useless actions, because they know what to do as an organized group of X people.
It’s like Dungeons: if you know what to do, you can do it in 15 mins. If you don’t, you could take hours.

I still bet they wont ever actually get around to buffing because every time they nerf they’ll look into wvw and hotjoin spvp see that new players that haven’t a clue what there doing are still getting destroyed by stealth alone and keep nerfing, its what has happened in basically every game I’ve played where they tried this sort of balance with a stealth class.

Funny thing is they wanted to be an Esport at one point and then decided that casual and new players are where all the balance is at.

This is my first post on these forums ever. Infact, it is the first time I have logged into them but I feel it is now necessary to voice opinion.

This nerf is so short sited. In the recent state of game you mentioned revealed regardless of attacking, this would have been fine. It seems like you came up with a last minute change without thinking it through.

Anet, PLEASE revert the revealed change and THINK about what this will do to the class. I have spent months saving for my appearance based around my sword dagger build, I spent £40 buying your GW1 and 4 days to get hall of monuments fiery dragon sword, I’ve just now finished my t3 cultural set AND tomorrow when I finish my world completion will have incinerator, all this work is ripped in half because of a short sighted nerf.

I wouldn’t mind it if the sword dagger set had ANYTHING to compensate for this. You nerfed dancing dagger, ok no problem it was kinda OP especially on pet classes. Flanking strike has been broken since the beginning and with one stone you killed cloak and dagger and my main source of damage (auto attack).

As it worked, auto attack has stealth attack + three strikes – the final being the main damage dealer. This timed perfectly with revealed, allowing me to chain 5/1/1/1/1/5/1/1/1/1.

With this nerf, I have an extra second of time where I have NOTHING I can do. Flanking strike is worthless, Infiltrators does nothing, dancing dagger is poor. The only thing I can do is first auto attack (which is bad damage) until revealed is up and I can cloak and dagger.

You have ripped this game from under my feet – I was having so much fun, I have found my non-cookie-cutter-glasscanon-hs spam build and built my appearance up from this.

To top it off you add WVW progression and then destroy it for me by making me want to stop playing my class.

And to the people who play other classes and don’t use this skill, DO NOT REPLY. You cannot understand how this has messed things up unless you actually play the class, this is ridiculous. I have tested this for the past hour or two and tried altering my build but it is dead.

Thanks for Reading, if you did. I would be more than happy to talk to a dev and walk through my build/playstyle and why I think this should be reverted if you would like.

Moving on...

As a P/D Thief, I have to say this sucks.

I will have to test how many more 1s I have to use before the CnD, but this 1 second will lower P/D dps through bleeding a lot. Maybe the third skill will become useful to get rid of some melees while waiting for Revealed to go.

If at least the animation for 1 was fixed so it isn’t so slow it would compensate the reduction in our Sneak Attack rate.

Thief PVE a joke? yes, it is.

in Thief

Strayhand.8216

As I see, the main reasons why thief “is a joke” in PvE are the following:

- PvE is easy
- warrior is better

Ok, nice logic…

By the way, following your “DPS is everything” logic, if we would be better at dps than warriors, wouldn’t that be rendering warriors useless? Then would you go to warrior forums and whine about your warrior being a joke? I’m just trying to understand the logic here.

So what if the Backstab build is not nerfed?

in PvP

Posted by: Daays.4317

Daays.4317

Backstab doesn’t need a damage nerf.

It needs a function nerf.

All abilities of other classes in this game have cooldowns. If you miss your 30 second cooldown, it still goes on cooldown.
All thief abilities use initiative. If you miss with your ability, you still spend the initiative.

Backstab doesn’t require initiative (because it already has a precursor) but it’s spammable. Meaning if you put up a block, I can spam into it as many times as I want. Blind? Just keep spamming.

Stealth should break when you use backstab. There is no reason a thief should get 2, 3, 4, 5, or 6 chances to backstab someone. It makes well timed blinds/blocks/dodges pointless.

How GW2 could've been good

  • Waypoints are often contested

There’s always a waypoint near there that can’t be contested, except in Orr, which is supposed to be an ebb and flow where the battlefront shifts.

  • Few people in high-level zones compared to low-level zones

Not everyone plays as much as you do.

  • Most events impossible to solo

Completely false. I’ve solo’d more DE’s than I could count. If you can’t solo anything that’s not labeled [Group Event], you’re bad, and you should stop blaming the game for that and get better instead.

And at 80, things just got worse when dealing with the end-game:

That was your first mistake, and a lot of people are making it: You bought the game for an endgame. You didn’t do any research on this game, and thought this was going to be another WoW clone where you race to max level before the game begins. There is no endgame, there is only a game.

  • Dungeon grinds are inane

I’ll agree here.

  • Exploration modes are frustrating, not challenging

Only to people that are bad at the game.

  • Dying as an inherent game mechanic just doesn’t work, nor does it feel right

Also doesn’t happen much if you’re not bad.

  • Revisiting old content is not end-game, the fact that your level scales down just adds insult to injury

Then why did you buy the game? We’ve known about level scaling for years. And yes, it does add content. Just because it’s not a gear treadmill doesn’t mean it’s somehow not part of the game.

  • The ridiculous downing mechanic is just that: ridiculous

It works in practice. If you can’t finish a downed opponent, it’s because you didn’t deserve to.

  • CC, in turn, is almost always used to prevent rezzing

It also has a limit. If people are CCing you before you can rez them, it might be time to turn your attention to a more pressing matter, such as the guy trying to kill you.

  • There is no depth to the game when everyone uses their stuns or knock-backs only in one specific scenario

These people are better than you because they’re using their skills intelligently. That adds depth. It doesn’t somehow make the game worse just because you don’t know how to do it.l

  • WvWvW is stupid for melee (you just get blown up), but sort of fun for ranged classes

I play a greatsword guardian in WvW and have turned the tide of many sieges by myself. Your argument is invalid.

  • PvP balance is all over the place right now (although this will hopefully get fixed)

If you think there’s a balance issue with any profession, post about it in the sub-forum of the profession in question. Izzy checks them religiously to look for suggestions for PvP balancing.

  • 15 dollars a month. Sorry ANet, but if you want to consistently dish out manageable updates, you need the income (and many, including myself, are more than willing to pay)

No, they don’t. WoW cost $200 million dollars to maintain, including server upkeep and development costs, between 2004 and 2008. They made over $440 million from box sales alone during that time. That $15 a month that you have given Blizzard over the years and will continue to give them is literally free money to them that does nothing but line the pockets of their executives and shareholders. None of that money is necessary to cover the cost of developing new content.

  • Use the trinity – your system looks good on paper, but it’s a disaster in practice (anyone that’s done exploration mode dungeons can attest to this)

No it’s not. You’re just bad.

  • Dying is not a game mechanic – dying should be a bad thing. You should not be allowed to come back to finish a boss fight after you died.

Dying is irrelevant, because if you’re not bad, it doesn’t happen.

  • Underwater exploration is fun, but underwater combat is stupid (no, really, it is). Blizzard’s blunder with Vashj’ir should’ve taught you this.

Most players are having no trouble with underwater content. If you are, that’s your fault, not the game’s.

  • You need end-game progression. You really do. However, I do realize that a lack of end-game is a consequence of not paying 15 dollars a month.

Not only is that last point completely false, but the first is something any informed consumer walked into the game with intent to avoid.

In short, you bought GW2 thinking it would be WoW, completely ignoring everything ANet said about the game for the past three years. Next time, be an informed consumer; just because you didn’t bother to do your homework doesn’t mean the game will fail. To the contrary, actually; GW2 has consistently had over three times as many players than WoW since launch.

GW2 will not fail just because it’s not WoW. Actually, the fact that it’s not WoW will ultimately be the reason it sees success, as it has already.

I stopped reading at ‘CnD is impossible to hit in PvP’ and ‘remove cast time from heal’.

OP – just play more matches, read around the forums and try out other classes for a session of sPvP.

If you still think thief would be anything but very strong…I don’t know.

The way you convey your complaints gives the impression, that you not yet ‘got’ how the PvP works in this game. Time to enlighten yourself, instead of complaining.

Skill in this game =/= uber build + rotation. It is far more complex than that and it might be overwhelming at first. But you shouldn’t cry ‘x is broken’ – rather ask ’ what do I do wrong’. The former just asks for (rightful^^) flames/ignorance, while the latter leads to improvement.

edit: There’s so many tricks you can pull off, you might not know, yet. E.g. that CnD being impossible to hit – preload CnD -> steal right before the cast is finished = Shadowstep to target, steal, instant CnD. Just one way to handle it. When you got comfortable with the cast time, CnD is really easy to hit without any combos.

Why do you ask for the removal of the cast time on the heal? Do you get interrupted much? Do you die too fast? Depending on what irks you, there is ways to manage it, without crying for buffs/nerfs.
