most people thinking 1vs1 is WvWvW but it is not.
WvWvW is masszerg, keep defense and keep attack.
comparing my ele with my ranger, it is like day and night.
my ele can dish out 10 times more overall damage/support than my ranger in the same situation/time.Maybe the way YOU play WvW is. There are those of use more interested in experimental builds and solo play than being a zergling, though.
Oh, and even in group play, dps is not everything; but I understand that’s a typical mistake made by PvErs in PvP metas.
So with whole 10 points you have at lvl20 what experimental build can you have that is so awesome.
My level 20 is not my only toon…….
No class can build glass cannon and defeat defensive builds. Glass cannon is for PvE, no place in PvP.
Rangers are free kills. Class need to get fixed.
Since we are on the same server we can’t 1v1 in WvW…… would you be up to putting that “free kill” to the test in an empty sPvP room?
You could always swtich servers, and fight my Warrior, Guardian, and Thief, and when you’re tired of losing to them, my Ranger.
So, no then?
Ingredients
1 cup thawed, chopped frozen spinach
11/2 cups thawed, chopped frozen artichoke hearts
6 ounces cream cheese
1/4 cup sour cream
1/4 cup mayonnaise
1/3 cup grated Parmesan
1/2 teaspoon red pepper flakes
1/4 teaspoon salt
1/4 teaspoon garlic powderDirections
Boil spinach and artichokes in 1 cup of water until tender and drain. Discard liquid. Heat cream cheese in microwave for 1 minute or until hot and soft. Stir in rest of ingredients and serve hot.
Spinach dip? Sounds yummy!

Sorry us no-lifers hate you space wasters, you contribute nothing to wvw except longer queues … spvp is over there —-->
LoL…. duelers go to BLs which have NO queue, we aren’t taking anything from anyone.
Thief Sword is pretty stout too.
Where do you guys usually duel? I mean don’t wanna get ganked mid-fight or do you just pick a new place every time?
We have to rotate places randomly. Believe it or not, there are such no-lifers that would form a full zerg to run and break up the duels if they knew where they were. This is why most dueling is kept to whispers and party invites rather than broadcast in general chat.
Well…ranger is a pure ranged class so it excels in ranged battles…sPVP is not a typical ranged battle that’s why all major sPVP-ers that still want to use ranger in order to PVP in that way use GS, sword etc…the good thing about mists is that you dont have to spend time to lvl a character so my advice is use a profession that is good for sPVP like guardian, warrior, thief etc etc etc…and if you think WvsW is PVE then you simply have no clue. To me it’s more PVP than the sPVP where all tactics focus on how to capture points and stay alive until my mates come etc etc..
Bullkitten, there is no such thing as “pure ranged” or “pure melee” every class is strong on both by design. There is NO class though, in which ranged is better than melee for small scale PvP. In the current state of PvP, unless you are a zergling in WvW, go melee or go home.
“Fixing” culling would require it to be something that was a bug or glitch to begin with. It’s intentional and totally necessary atm to enable players with PCs that barely meet the minimum specs to be able to play.
They can simply toggle it off at any point. But not without causing issues to certain players.
Fortunately some back-end work on the engine may see that switch turned off in the near future.
You don’t invite people who defeat you in combat to party to give em props?
I will 1v1 any thief who claims they are the best and claim my throne!
Please tell me you are in my WvW matchup!! I so have to take you on now…..
Sanctum of Rall
Bring it bro!!! =D
I’m currently on Maguuma. Wonder if/when we’ll be matched…..
I duel mostly and prefer to do it in party with my opponent. Gives them no “excuses” about me abusing culling or whatever.
If there were a way to get rid of the invisibility portion but keep the “openers” I’d be totally fine with that.
So you do stealth? Otherwise, what’s the point of having a party if you don’t use it?
I have 2 different builds, one is totally sans stealth. The other I use condition purge and daze but like to do it in party so my opponent is never in a situation where they can’t target and see me.

Guess he prefers PvDoor himself….. Oh well
The ranking system is nothing more than a top to bottom list of servers based on WvW population; and even that is an ineffective measure with all the wanton server hopping that takes place. Server rank has nothing to do with “server skill” or any such rot.
Anyone with an IQ higher than a rock should know that EVERY server has people who are good at PvP and those who are little more than sheep to be farmed by the others.
I will add my name to 1v1 and dueling for thief. American servers.
I’ve created a S/D build, using 2x cats as pets and swapping them on cd. Stack toughness, healing power, condition damage, and vitality. The evasive nature of the build causes a ton of initiative wasting for thieves. Just gotta play this build balls-to-the-wall aggressive.
So far have not lost to a thief 1v1 in sPvP.Why have condition damage with that spec? Just wondering, as I don’t see how it helps you with that weapon combo. (I have not seen Cond damage help pet bleeds either).
Boosting the poison and bleed damage has worked very well thus far. I’m not certain if it improves pet at all, none of your stats do that I can tell. That’s not to say you couldn’t easily swap in power for condition damage. Most of the attacks have both a condition and a direct damage component. I just chose to buff the conditions since it translates really well to SB as well for weapon-swapping on targets that run from me.
It’s a good idea to just do pet swap on CD, anyway; to avoid having one die very often.
I will 1v1 any thief who claims they are the best and claim my throne!

The class as a whole takes little to no skill with the current culling issues, so theres really no such thing as the best thief. What you should have asked is “Who is the least terrible thief”
Want to 1v1 me in party (no stealth)? Will show ya what a good thief can do :-P
But all the forum thieves tell me that without stealth the thief is utterly useless, a broken class, a class that couldn’t kill an afk player if they tried. Are you saying they are lying to me?
I’m saying they all run worthless glass cannon builds that probably can’t survive without. Thief would be fine without stealth for those of us who actually know how to build a PvP character.

… Simply make each objective or player kill worth a static amount of progression “xp” that is split between everyone who participated in killing or capturing. This will cause people to try to do things with as few people as they possibly can to maximize their “xp”.
I believe this is called PvE and is already in the game. I don’t think most people who WvWvW are there for the PvE.
I do agree that we need less zergs. I enjoy strats and tactics more than mob vs doors. I just think that the mindless zerg is far easier for most people so even if there was another method in place (to reinforce strategy) that it would be used. I mean, most people would rather run around and kill random things than defend so… I don’t see how adding “objectives” or “kill xp” would help.
Have you been under a rock? They ARE adding it in. It’s already been stated lol. Read dev posts about the February patch…..
My post was rather than just rewarding everyone a set amount per encounter. Make each encounter worth a set amount to be divided among participants. This would discourage zergs rather than reinforcing them (ANet’s planned WvW progression will have one impact or the other….more zergs or less zergs. It’s all in how they implement.)
your build have insane survaivability, you can escape even from 5 players chasing you and constant harras them .
Since nobody can burst you down in 1 vs 1 situations ,my question is , what happens if you meet an bunker. With 30 critical damage and 2800 p atack your bonus p attack /enemy’s p defence will be arround 0.7 -0.8 vs bunkers with an 1.8 critical damage. Do you have any tactics to burst down another bunker build ( even thief ) but mostly i am reffering to guardian, elementarist, mesmer . Or this fights go endless ?
Boon stripping and good timing on daze. Will kill bunkers. P/D thieves (good ones) usually wind up in a draw. But given some time to figure out their habits during a fight (time which you get by being so defensive) I learn how to anticipate defensive CDs and interrupt/strip them off.

The upcoming progression patch (Feb.) could serve to break up zerging is they build it right. Simply make each objective or player kill worth a static amount of progression “xp” that is split between everyone who participated in killing or capturing. This will cause people to try to do things with as few people as they possibly can to maximize their “xp”.
I’ve created a similar build to this on my ranger as well (using S/D) and it’s almost as much fun as this is. The evasiveness is like something straight out of the matrix. 1v1 most players don’t have a prayer.
I should note that i keep gear at my current level all greens and fully runed. In order to maximize the scaling.
yeah, will have to be at least after Tuesday (xfer lockout)….
Go to SPvP, the stat’s are not that much different. No Xfer and it can be settled there.
Thought sPvP was server specific? Either way, the argument is whether an upscaled ranger can be a threat in WvW.
yeah, will have to be at least after Tuesday (xfer lockout)….
Oh, btw I’m more than willing to take you up on that duel challenge, any time. What server are ya on?
So, what you’re admitting then is that you are the average 80? not even a little above average? Once again, YES I lose handily, as in get my kitten royally kicked in by people who are level 80 and are actually good on their class. But how many people do you run into in WvW that are good? Most of these people are simply PvE’rs pretending to PvP (ie. they are walking badges even for upscaled players so long as they have a remote clue). This makes for a generally positive experience while solo roaming.
Power increases crit damage too, doesn’t it? So why would power/crit not be worth it, you’re still increasing the damage done by crits.
In effect, yes. Power increases base damage. Crits normally hit for 200? % of the damage (not 100% sure on that figure). What crit damage does is increases that percentage. Further increasing the difference between the damage a normal hit vs a critical hit does.
Hi, I wanted to ask what kind of stats can knights gear achieve , I’m currently aiming towards around 50% crit chance 15k hp and as much power and toughness after that.
I have 50% with food buff atm (no sigils stacking or anything) using Soldiers armore/weapons. Emerald orbs in the armor. And knights jewelry.
I run a S/D + SB ranger. I’m only level 20 atm but feel very confident even roaming solo in WvW. They are a solid class.
Lolzers in my trousers.
Ranger is a bad class to start out on. It’s lacking self-synergy, and it’s an uphill battle all the way.
But if you like pain, go for it.
Speaking as an 80 ranger with 150+ skill points from wvw and an 80 thief with 50+ skill points.
I also have a thief with over 1000 current hours played on it. A s/d ranger will give any thief a run for their money if played properly. The highly evasive nature of the build causes a ton of initiative wasting for the thief. Don’t build glass cannon, stack toughness, condition damage, and vitality. Currently the only class I’ve not beaten in 1v1 vs 80s on a regular basis is mesmers.
You can’t expect people to believe this hogwash, now do you?
I have roughly 7000 kills as a Thief, with roughly 50 deaths (AS A GLASS CANON), and 5000 kills as a Ranger with rhoughly 200 deaths (BUNKER BEASTMASTERY BUILD). I also sport a 80 Warrior, and 80 Guardian.
You could not kill any of my 80 toons, let alone killing the ones with regen, while I was afk. A GOOD Thief doesn’t die, let alone to a Ranger of all classes. <laughs>
The nerve of some people. Honesty is a virtue, not something to be feared.
Wow, because a sub 80 ranger has never killed an 80 character, ignorance is bliss.
Rangers are not a great class but any class is capable of killing any class even if they are below 80 if played right.
It’s cool, man. Doubters are gonna doubt. I’m fairly well known in the dueling circuit on my server; so I’m not at all threatened by this person’s uneducated comments.
You two are so cute. There is no way a level 20 Ranger is going to kill any level 80 who knows half of what their class can do. It just will not happen. Killing level 80 toons played by players who’re not good at the class they’re playing means absolutely nothing. It sure as hell doesn’t show whether or not a class is balanced.
I could duel your level 20 Ranger 1000 times with any of my level 80s, and win every single time.
You could always provide a video.
90% of the people you run into while solo roaming are absolutely clueless about their class. The argument here is whether or not one can successfully roam on an upscaled ranger, not whether they can beat every level 80 they come across.
I’m sorry you had a bad experience at low level, not everyone is on the same playing field, skill-wise.
Shadow Refuge should be used carefully, most good players will expect it and try to knock you out before the stealth becomes permanent (3 secs??) Vs a class that does knockbacks, try to place it against a wall or some other solid object and put your back to it. Vs a mesmer with focus, try to wait until they swap to their other weapon set and use it then while swap is on CD. (their #4 ability will pull you right out on focus)
Blinding powder, try to use this inside melee range and only if Cloak and Dagger is not an option (no initiative) If forced to use Blinding powder, allow the stealth to dissipate all the way to regen as much initiative as possible, then Cloak and Dagger as soon as stealth breaks naturally (no revealed so long as you don’t attack from stealth)
Dagger storm is useful mostly vs ranged classes, or 3+ enemies. With many enemies your health regen is astronomical with it due to your food buff and signet of malice.
Steal is a very versatile ability. Try to pick a target to steal from that will give you an ability most suited to your current situation and then save what you steal to use at the most opportune time.
(I’m aware that the names are not all accurate)
Necro: AoE Fear -(in group play try to fear bomb the middle of their cluster and/or fear a target back into your group.
Warrior: Whirling Axe -great to use in tight clusters of players, provides allot of health regen due to your healing signet and does large amounts of melee range aoe damage.
Mesmer: Boons -this ability gives you every boon most notably, stability, great when vs a group trying to CC you
Ranger: Healing -this ability will spawn a stationary tree that stacks regeneration on allies nearby, the longer you stay in radius, the longer the regeneration duration stacks (try to fight under it)
Engineer: Slime -places an aoe field at your target’s feet that stacks random conditions, however as a combo field, it applies confusion with projectiles, making this a very strong group utility steal
Thief: Stealth -applies 3 seconds of stealth with a .5 sec cast time (use this lieu of C&D or your CD abilities if you have it (free stealth)
Elementalist: Chill Spike -provides short ranged chill effect on your target and does moderate damage on hit.
Guardian: Daze -applies 3 seconds of daze to your target (try to use this to interrupt guardian’s heal)
These are just a few of the tips I’ve learned over the course of my gameplay. As always, feel free to contact me in game with more specific questions; I will try to answer them as best I can.

“If it ain’t broke, fix it ’til it is.”
GAMEPLAY:
Ok, now that we have this tanky thief built, how do we play it? Well here are a few tips that I’ve found helpful.
Most of your damage will come from the autoattack chain, the last attack of which, can crit for upwards of 4k in this build vs glass cannons (try to allow the 3rd swing to go off before performing another action)
Use Cloak and Dagger frequently to keep regeneration buff up on yourself and to drop conditions applied to you. You should watch your buff bar for the presence of “revealed” debuff and not use Cloak and dagger so long as it persists (3 secs).
Try to use your Tactical strike from stealth behind your target and time it to interrupt a cast (usually your target will attempt to cast a heal after you stealth so it’s great to prevent that)
While roaming in WvW, it’s generally a good idea use Infiltrator’s strike without a target as it comes off CD. This will keep Shadow Return up permanently so if you get suddenly stunned, knocked down, or CCed in some other way you have an instant escape. (great vs those thieves who run basilisk venom)
Vs another thief, it’s a good idea to use Infiltrator’s Strike followed immediately by Cloak and Dagger. The Infiltrator’s Strike will immobilize the thief long enough to ensure your Cloak and Dagger lands regardless of whether they insta-stealth.
Flanking strike is very powerful, if you understand its quirks. First, it strips a boon off your target (use this vs a dagger storming thief to remove their Stability boon) Secondly, it’s UNBLOCKABLE. vs a warrior who uses shield block, you can spam this ability and land every hit.
Making Flanking Strike land regularly takes a bit of practice. You always spin to the right so if you are fighting someone who moves allot approach them from the right side and face 90% from their trajectory (towards them) this will cause you to spin along their path. Keep in mind that after the first swing, you are again in control of your character, so try to close the gap between you and your opponent a bit before the second strike goes.
Vs a target that is charging you, turning your back to them then firing the ability will cause you to spin into them making it easy to land both strikes.
Dancing dagger is no longer used as a primary damage ability, however it is still VERY useful to snare a running target and allow you to catch up to where your autoattacks will perma-snare them.
Cloak and Dagger should be used as frequently as initiative/revealed debuff allow.

I’ve seen several posts on the official thief forums erroneously stating that we only have 2 viable options…condition or berserker burst. In this post, I will lay out and explain my light tank WvW build.

Probably not, but most of us hope they leave it in. It’s the perfect way to chat without worrying about hurting sensitive people’s feelings. The option to decline party invitation is always there, unlike whispers which you receive without consent (before blocking an individual ofc).
Sure, remove my stealth.
Give us Thieves plate armor and crap tons of HP. Then we’ll talk.
Before you ask for an ability to be removed, do some math.
use vitality stuff instead of power, and you will have more hp….
16.2k HP, and over 3100 armor rating on my thief. I win duels vs people in party to handicap stealth. It is not an absolute necessity to the thief class, only those foolish enough to go full out glass on it.
I run a S/D + SB ranger. I’m only level 20 atm but feel very confident even roaming solo in WvW. They are a solid class.

Speccing full glass cannon on ANY character in ANY PvP environment is a bad idea. You can not hope to compete vs any defensive build like that, your damage is nerfed against them but they hit you for full damage.
With testing on this (Full tank thief vs full glass cannon) we each hit the other for roughly the same amount of damage, the trade off being the tank had higher HP so advantage tank. Same principle can be applied to any class vs itself when comparing one build to another.
I wouldn’t mind removing stealth and doing something more in line with what assassin’s had in GW1. Maybe have skill that currently stealth you apply an “evasive” state in which there is a % chance for abilities to miss you. Obviously that miss chance would have to be tweak in development to compensate for lack of stealth, while simultaneously not being completely OP. Abilities that previously required stealth to activate would simply be active while in this new evasive state.

How can people vouch for what you do solo?
Dueling in WvW, and they get a kick out of watching me solo vs people when roaming. Adds insult to injury when you lose to an upscaled in 1v1, and one on what’s considered a weak class at that.
Anyone from the [iRez] guild on Maguuma will be more than happy to back me up on this.
Open wide, it’s a big, scary pill….. :-P

Well, I can agree to a point with buffing certain builds for ranger. My argument is that rangers do have other options that work really well. We are just forced into melee builds (particularly S/D) to be really successful in 1v1 vs these thieves. My point to the OP is to not give up on the ranger until he tries a melee build.
Yeah, the reason for this is I just rolled ranger last week.
Don’t assume to know my motives. I agree that there are builds on several classes that need to be nerfed, especially on the thief.
As for FoTM, I’ve never been that. I’m willing to bet you’re a bullkitten cookie-cutter build on your thief (backstab or P/D amirite?). While I’ve taken the time to actually develop a tank build with S/D that’s not el-cheapo and actually takes some skill to play. (hence the 1k+ hours)
I run a S/D + SB ranger. I’m only level 20 atm but feel very confident even roaming solo in WvW. They are a solid class.

Ok, keep fighting baddies with glass cannon builds who use nothing but shortbow. I’m sure you will continue to farm kills. It’s painfully obvious you’ve never fought a ranger with a dueling build….. As for the afk bit, most laughable thing I’ve read in these forums to date.
Oh, and for the record, I never claimed to win every fight vs 80. Only stated that I do regularly kill players at that level. At some point skill differential supercedes the level difference.
Believe what you wish…. There are plenty who would vouch for the accuracy of my claims.
I started wvw at level 2 on my ranger with a friend who was also starting a ranger. Once you get 2 pets (and are good a pet swapping) you are good to go.
Yup. Some people just want to play lazy. Sure you gotta work for your kills as an upleveled anything in WvW. But the fact that I’ve leveled from leaving the starter area (level 2) to my current level 20 as a solo roamer proves that it isn’t as far-fetched as some would have you believe. One player not being able to hack it doesn’t mean the rest can’t.
