Dynamics of Synergetics – DOS
(edited by Aeleniel.4973)
@Nels | Thanks for popping in to tell us! Enjoy your time with your family, and Merry Christmas if you celebrate it. :]
@Kat | I’m going to hop back online to invite you to the guild (and I’ll double-check a couple other invites while I’m there). Dying is part of life in GW2 for a while. Would you like some pointers? This group is great with that! What level and profession are you? Also, we’re a fun group, so if you enjoy dancing… You’ll fit right in!
@akamon | My background is mostly solo console RPGs, as well. I have played many F2P MMOs, but I played those solo too (for the most part). WvW seems very complicated. I don’t want to jump in, because I don’t know what I’m doing. I’ve been trying to read about it, but I know I’m not comprehending because I haven’t tried it. Such is my pickle. I’ll just have to put my big girl pants on and try it!
EDIT: Guild invites are officially up to date.
(edited by Aeleniel.4973)
Welcome to Kallas and Catinka! When we do get together, our guildmates tend to run PvE exploring or dungeons, so both of you should feel right at home! I haven’t tried sPvP or WvW, really, because usually I’m not a PvP fan either. However, WvW does look pretty interesting… I’m interested in at least trying it before too long… But I’ve been saying that for a while, and still haven’t done it yet, hehe. As Akamon said, there are a few other Gunnar’s Hold members – feel free to reach out to them or any of the rest of us if you need anything. :]
All professions and races are viable in GW2, so that’s good news! Let me go dig up something I just posted about this. Mostly, race choice is about what sort of character you want to play… There isn’t a “best” race in GW2. There also isn’t a best profession, either.
Here’s what I have to say about races:
The sylvari are the newest, most naive race. They revere the wisdom of a friendly centaur named Ventari, and the Pale Tree which gives them life and creates or is responsible for the Dream from which all sylvari wake fully grown, and what the sylvari see in the Dream influences their path in life. Their adversaries are the Nightmare Court, who think the Pale Tree and the Dream are bogus and try to convert sylvari to “nightmare”. Their racial skills involve creation of plant turrets or binding roots.
Humans are pretty normal, at war with the centaurs. They believe in Six gods and goddesses, and their racial skills are prayers to those gods.
Asura are super smart, and usually super arrogant. They can be adorable or creepy – it kind of depends on personal preference. Hopefully Kit won’t kill me for that. xD The Asura nemesis is the Inquest, which is a group of researchers whose experiments defy ethics. Asura racial skills are in the realm of condition fields and golem-summoning.
Mesmers and Elementalists can be a little tricky to level, especially solo. That isn’t to say it can’t be done, though, and both classes are fun. I have heard that Mesmer illusions can go a little haywire, but that’s supposed to be fixed fairly soon, I think. Necromancers are pretty solid, but I haven’t played one.
What sort of role do you like to play in MMOs/other games? That will help us. If you go to the respective forums for each class, all you’ll find is whining… But no class is “completely broken” as people will try to tell you it is. All classes can be versatile, as well – it depends on how you build and what weapons you use.
Hopefully that helps a bit! :]
What server are you on? That will certainly help!
Welcome, Gifted! I’ll hop online now and send you a guild invitation, if you haven’t already gotten one.
As far as cookies go, I would love to share! My mom is an excellent cook/baker, so they always turn out fantastic. If I could send some to all of you, I would! xD
Welcome! GW2 is a fantastic game, and I hope you enjoy it as much as I do! It is a little bit different than other MMOs, so you might find that GW2 takes some getting used to.
If you have any questions, I belong to a great guild of friendly, supportive people. We started out here in this forum, at this thread: https://forum-en.gw2archive.eu/forum/game/players/OPERATION-UNION-Bringing-Players-Together/first
We always have a lively, fun in-game chat going, and everyone in the group is more than willing to help out – answering questions, helping you explore/level when possible, you name it! We’re cross-server, so it doesn’t matter to us which server you chose.
Good luck, and enjoy your escapades in Tyria!
Berkut beat me to it! I’m a regular Operation: Unioner, so I can second that recommendation. We are a cross-server guild, and without opening up GW2, I can’t remember how many Crystal Desert players we have. However, we do have a lively in-game chat most of the time, lots of friendly, supportive people, and we also like to run dungeons (which can be run cross-server).
Check it out!
Welcome, Nos! :]
I’m so looking forward to today… My mom and I have a tradition of baking a TON of delicious holiday cookies for Christmas, and today is the day we start! A little late this year, but better late then never. ;] I won’t probably be playing during the day today, but I’ll be up late tonight.
@Killer
Welcome! Not only is GW2 not an ARPG, it isn’t even a typical MMO. It’s very dynamic compared to most MMOs… And it requires some getting used to, even for MMO veterans. So do not fret – you will learn! And like I said, ask all of the specific questions you can think of. Did you want an invitation to the guild? It’s a fairly informal, social, supportive cross-server guild – you may not find a ton of people on your server (but you might, it depends). Either way, you will find a bunch of people chatting in-game that can help you with whatever you need.
@Deb
I’m not sure I really understood what you meant about the guild/server in your signature… Can you explain?
@Vlawde
I’m not from Europe, but I do know that people in England (and probably other parts of Europe) say “maths” instead of “math.”
I agree with Kit! I’m not always horrible with math… I either completely excel, or completely fail – there is no middle ground. But a lot of the time, I completely fail. xD For me, it depends on the instructor.
Welcome, Erec!
@wildcode,
As many hae already said, we are a cross-server, mostly social guild. We started out here on the Players Helping Players forum, just chatting with each other. We decided to make it into a guild. Since it is cross-server, and there are lots of servers, there are a few servers that don’t have very many players in-guild. That’s changing… When I joined a few weeks ago, I was the third Eredon Terrace player. Now I think we’re up to seven or eight.
The Legion is a guild that’s really hoping for guesting – that’s when we can really break out and help each other out! In the meantime, we just provide a fun place for people to chat ingame and get questions answered. We also do some dungeon running, which at the moment is the only thing you can run cross-server.
The Legion doesn’t require you to represent all the time, so you’re welcome to find a server-specific guild to join, and you can be part of both. Also, as I mentioned, the Legion is steadily gaining members, so you’re bound to find someone on your server before too long – especially if you try and recruit some people! But at our heart, we’re just a ragtag band of friendly, supportive people… You decide for yourself whether that’s what you’re looking for in a guild or not.
Welcome, Batman! I also play on Eredon Terrace. I have a level 58 Ranger, and a few other low-leveled characters. I’ll make sure you get a guild invitation. We have lots of people to talk to, and I’d be willing to run hearts and events with you… Hit me up ingame! There are also a few other ET players in our guild.
EDIT: All invites are up to date!
(edited by Aeleniel.4973)
Welcome to everyone new! You all sound like fantastic people, and I can’t wait to see you online. :]
Welcome, Alex! If you haven’t already received an invitation, I’ll send one to you right now! Isn’t it nice to be on winter break?
Really! I’ve got a great, cross-server guild, and it will be so nice when we’re all able to go visit each other. In the meantime, we’re stuck with dungeons, which you can run cross-server, as long as you’re in the same region (NA servers with NA servers, EU with EU).
I don’t have a ton of experience, but from what I’ve read, I’d choose either Guardian or Elementalist. Elementalist is the most “powerful” support profession, but you’ve got to be on your guard… If you’re dead, you can’t be supporting.
Guardians are much sturdier, and if you build them correctly, they can be wonderful supporters.
Also, take a look at Engineer. Also a little squishy, though not as much as the Ele. They can maintain pretty good condition damage while applying lots of buffs. You can also (I think) go even more “full support” and really rain down condition removal, healing, etc. on your party.
It’s definitely happening at some point, since ANet has continued to promise it. However, there is nothing concrete about when. Hopefully before too long, yes? :]
Do you have to have a main? You said that you’re considering mostly between five classes. How many character slots do you have? Five. Play them all, and free yourself from having to decide on a main right away. Play them beyond level 10. Going into the Mists is great, because it gives you an idea of how the character will play in the endgame. However, the only way to really get a sense for how the character will play – and more importantly, how you will play the character – is to play them to at least level 40 or so. Make your five characters, play them all, have a good time. One will probably emerge as your favorite.
Also, don’t be afraid to try a build that isn’t as “effective” but is much more fun… There’s nothing wrong with that. You can be creative – and you’ll find something you like.
Welcome, Purring! I’ll hop online real quick and send you a guild invitation. :]
Lots of good advice, and as a member of Operation: Union and the Legion of Honour, I also suggest you check out our thread/guild – we’re all friendly people who love to assist and answer questions. That is your mentor system. What server are you on?
Guild Wars 2 isn’t your typical MMO… You have to stay moving, and learn that dodging is your best friend. When you are fighting a mob and you see them animate for an attack, that’s the time to dodge away! You’ll learn as you go exactly when the best times to dodge are, but usually the animated attacks are the strongest – you don’t want to be hit by those.
Since your main attack skills change with each weapon, have you tried changing up your weapon? You’ll find that some weapons are much more suited for your playstyle. Try them all, and when you find the one, you’ll usually know. You’ll say to yourself, “Wow, this is much easier/better/more fun!” If I might ask, which weapons are you currently using?
As an Elementalist, you’ll want to get used to swapping your attunements regularly and often. It’s not easy to get used to, but it’s absolutely critical for playing an Elementalist. You’ll also want vitality/toughness gear, and look around online or in the Elementalist forum for survival builds.
Dying is part of life in GW2, especially early on. Don’t get discouraged.
Take a look at everyone’s advice here, try some of the things out… Also check out https://forum-en.gw2archive.eu/forum/game/players/OMG-If-you-only-knew-this-tips-for-new-players/first – it’s a super helpful thread with random tips that I think will help out out a lot. Try all of these things, and then post again with more specific questions! You can do this. ;]
I can’t speak for all areas, because I’ve only traveled through level 50-60 areas, but from what I’ve seen… When someone calls out in chat that there’s a boss or DE happening, at least a few people tend to show up. I try to answer those calls whenever I can, despite the fact that waypointing can get a little spendy.
I think DEs are all part of the fun… It’d be fun to participate in DE runs – and if people start running DEs, then some others will probably join in. It’s definitely a fun prospect – let’s get it started!
@Vlawde
Just like G said, point the camera down (bird’s eye view) and center so that there are four colors on the left side of your screen and four colors on the right side of your screen. Position your fingers on the 1-4, 6-9 keys and don’t move them! Try hard not to have to look down. Don’t pay attention to the colors, just notice which column the light is in – if it’s in the second column (from the left), you know you’ll be using your second finger.
It takes a few rounds to get used to it, especially if you’re not used to DDR or Guitar Hero, but you’ll get it! It’s a really fun minigame, in my opinion. Much better than the dreaded jumping puzzle.
Remember that if you make it through the round, you can heal yourself in between songs by playing random notes (while waiting for more players to join). Just don’t play random things while a song is still going, ‘cause then you’ll take damage. Good luck! :]
Does anyone have any tips for the snowball capture-the-flag minigame? I’m HORRIBLE at it.
Welcome, new members! Don’t be shy – jump right in!
Yay for Wintersday! :]
Welcome to Molkien and iarebest! Feel free to jump in on ingame chat, this thread, or the forum site… Or any combination of the three! You’ll feel welcome no matter what. :]
Don’t worry, I’m still working on my story too. My highest level character is just over level 40, and I’m spending time dinking around with my other (very low leveled) alts. The guild’s got lots of people at lots of different levels.
Welcome to Doc and Dax (yay for another Eredon Terrace player!). Feel free to jump right in to the chatting and the fun – and feel free to ask if you have any questions about anything… We’re a friendly bunch!
@DEK
Good news – I am level 40! Also, I’d be happy to help plan a party, just let me know what you need. :]
This place will be much more organized, I think, once we have a couple of different forums/threads to chat on. It is pretty fun to watch the post count go up and up and up, though.
@akamon and Loswaith,
Things do move incredibly fast around here! Sometimes I find myself scrambling to keep up, and I check in at least a couple times a day. It’s always a great read though, isn’t it? ;]
Maelzrael, welcome! I’ll hop online and send you an invite if you haven’t already gotten one. :]
Eredon Terrace is so bad at WvWvW… I don’t know how I’ll get those POIs. Actually, I’ve heard that ET is mighty, but way too small to really beat anybody else. Maybe by the time I get there, we’ll have more people and will be kicking butt! ;]
Welcome Bluetooth! I also am suffering from a case of alt-itis. I don’t mind it much, though!
@jjc
I’ll see if I’ve got some cinnamon I can send your way. :]
@Frotee
I don’t think Glitch meant it in the way that some jerks do. There definitely are people out there who pretend to be your friend, only to get mad when you don’t want to rip off all of their clothes. However, being a friendly, dependable person is a component of a relationship.
If there isn’t a spark, there may not be anything either person can do to change that. Sometimes people just aren’t compatible. Again, however, I would much rather have a potential love interest be friendly and trustworthy. If we are compatible, it may become something more. If we are not, it may become something less. I have been “friendzoned” by the people I’ve been interested, and I’ve also “friendzoned” some people that have been interested in me. There just hasn’t been a connection. Even though it’s not fun to be in a situation where your interest isn’t interested in you, that doesn’t mean that it’s anyone’s fault.
There are definitely “Nice Guys” who pretend that by being nice, they’ll be able to get into a girl’s pants. There are also nice guys who will become fabulous boyfriends. There is a distinct difference, so do not generalize.
@Ayumi
Welcome! I’m glad that you’re so eager to join us… I think you’re already fitting in just perfectly! And it doesn’t look like you have to worry about big scary Dr. Glitch, because you’ve got a whole lineup of people ready to beat him up for you if he starts getting uppity!
@Glitch and Kit
I’m glad that you invited Kunshu – hopefully he will join us. I’m glad that there are people like you in the world! :]
Hello Robmann! Welcome to the group. I haven’t run any dungeons yet either, but there are several members who do. I’m sure you’ll be able to find a group!
@Kit,
Very nice of you to send Vlawde that skill book! They’re kind of spendy… I have to muster the willpower to blow all of my money on the Master level book. Woohoo!
Hmm… Based on your stories, you seem fairly normal to me, Kunshu! Who knows, maybe we’re both crazy.
I think that high school is pretty silly. I know I kind of messed myself up, because between middle and high school, I decided I wanted to hang out with a different type of people in high school than I had in middle school. I didn’t want to be one of the super popular kids, but I didn’t want to be associated with all the nerds that I had been in middle school. I knew that I was by far the most socially navigable person in my old friendgroup – many people said to me that they didn’t know why I was “stuck” with them.
I thought high school would be the perfect opportunity to expand my friend circle, so I tried to strike up friendships with some other, more popular kids. It didn’t really work (although I didn’t realize it at the time), and I ended up being caught between the two. I had distanced myself a bit from my old friends, but I hadn’t made any real new friends either. I went back to my old friendgroup, but I always felt a little “outside” it. Then my friends all went to universities out of the area, and our friendships weren’t strong enough to keep us connected despite the distance. Now it’s just friendless me, but I’m trying to stay optimistic. I’m thinking that university (which I’ll go to next fall) will be the opportunity for me to develop new friendships, and I hope that college will do the same for you!
That’s pretty much all I’ve got, because perhaps I’m not the best example. I definitely have to keep thinking that since there’s no obvious reason that I don’t have friends, it’s more about not having found the right people than a problem with me. Hopefully that helps?
I have to agree with you! I’m very impressed by the community here! People in this subforum at least, seem to be much nicer than the people in the forums for other online games. It’s wonderful! :]
Sixth form college… I’m from the US, so this is a foreign concept to me. I read the Wikipedia article, and I’m still not really sure about it.
In any case, I’m in the US, at a community college, which is a two-year college that sometimes people choose to attend instead of or before going to a university. Typically much cheaper, sometimes much easier than a university. In my case, I’m going there to complete the general education requirements for a Bachelor’s degree and also to figure out what I want to study. That way, when I go to university in the fall, I’ll be able to start on my third year of college study, and begin taking classes in my chosen major immediately.
As Glitch said, Hechicera brought up several good points. Without being able to see you in action, it’s a little hard for us to know exactly what will help you most. That doesn’t mean that we can’t help out as much as we possibly can. Finding someone in real life who will be honest with you may be beneficial. If you’d like, I wouldn’t mind trying to critique if you have a particular story or instance in mind – or if you try out some of these tips and it still doesn’t quite work.
I’m thinking your problem is probably in the realm of nonverbal communication – “body language”, eye contact, etc. – because you seem like a pretty normal/decent guy based on what you’ve typed here. I’m thinking it’s probably not what you say or don’t say, but more about how you say it, how you act.
jjc,
Are you at a university? I’m just at community college, so that might have something to do with it. We don’t start up again until almost a week after the new year. Not to rub it in or anything… ;]
Yay for vacation, Kit! Now that school is over, I’m on vacation too. :]
EDIT: Also, all of these fun pictures from dungeon running makes me want to try out a dungeon too. I’m afraid that I’ll horrible, though. I feel like I’m holding my own in PvE, but I know WvW, PvP, and dungeons are whole ‘nother beasts. If you organize a NA AC run, hit me up – maybe I’ll be courageous enough to join in!

Kunshu,
Physics and chemistry sound like perfectly sound/popular majors, and Boeing is an excellent place to work. Also, in my not-so-expert expert opinion, your therapist sounds ridiculous. Helping people tackle their own inside issues is what psychologists are supposed to do. There isn’t a magical pill you can take, but that doesn’t mean that there’s nothing you can do.
Kaii,
That screenie almost makes me wish I hadn’t killed off my guardian… Almost.
Elowin,
I think you can still consider yourself accomplished for today. :] I think you can bring others in your party to your personal story instances… But I’m not sure.
EDIT: This wiki says that multiple people can participate in your personal storyline, but that the instance scales in difficulty to the number of people participating. Despite the increase in mob difficulty, it still probably is easier with another intelligent person helping you (since NPCs are pretty useless for the most part). I would party up just to make sure they get brought into the instance with you.
(edited by Aeleniel.4973)
Wonderful, Helequin! I can’t believe it was that far back – it seems like it was just a little while ago.
Is anyone else getting super excited for Wintersday? :]
All good advice here, I think. I’m at kind of a strange place in my life as well. Most of my friends from high school moved away for university, and I haven’t really met anyone since then. Even my high school friends and I didn’t “hang out” a lot, and while I’m friendly, I’m not very good at “small talk”. I keep trying to be positive, though, and I encourage you to do the same! For myself, I would rather wait awhile and end up with friends who are genuine and a “good match” than try too hard to attract friends that aren’t as compatible.
If you take even half of this advice, especially the part about being yourself. Realism and logic aren’t bad things, but try to avoid getting sucked into too much pessimism, for yourself or others.
I think you’ll find that college is the perfect thing. What are you planning to study? That can be an obvious source of common ground.
Welcome to Azureai and Puggernaut! Come on in and make yourselves at home. :]
Glitch, can you post an announcement ingame with a short description of the new guild ranks? I can’t find the page that Helequin posted them on. I haven’t checked as I write this, so if you’ve already done so, then please ignore me!
Glitch,
I think you do a fabulous job of including everybody! I feel very welcome and very involved already. I have no problem opening my big mouth when I think I can help somebody, but there’s still a lot I don’t know, so sometimes I’ll defer to you or one of the others. ;]
Oh, and Elowin, it was great chatting with you ingame yesterday. I’m not sure about your dungeon guild idea – it certain seems like it would work, but I’m not familiar with how GW2 guilds function from the inside (the leaders’ perspective). I’ll let one of the people in charge here answer that for ya.
Welcome, new friends! Woo for another Eredon Terrace player. I think you’ll find that this group is great for chatting and feeling like you’re playing with other wonderful people. None of my RL friends play GW2 anymore, so I was feeling pretty lonely until I stopped in here. No more! ;]
@Gilosean
I am glad to hear that there should be lots of fun stuff to do regardless. Also, I expect I’ll be leveling up quite a bit during the event (since it’s over winter break, I’ll have lots of time to kill).
Also, I think the sound of hitting the ground face first is hilarious. It’s a sickening splat if I ever heard one.
@Aluna
Welcome to the group! :]
