The game engine is perty much what your going to get even if worked on I can’t see anything more than maby a 10% FPS increase in the future or ever.

Have you ever played World of Tanks ? They just did a complete Over Haul of there rendering engine in a recent update, that allowed ppl to run the game at higher settings without impacting there FPS as it did before, That alone proves that it is possible for Anet to do there own over haul to GW2, it may just take time to do it.

Your getting 1-5 FPS with a HD5870 ? I find that odd since I’m playing with an HD4890 and I’m still averaging 40+ FPS with high settings at 1680×1050 res ? This is also with a 955BE @ 3.9GHz and 8GBs of DDR3 1600MHz. :/

By the way I am using the 12.6 drivers, you may want to consider reverting your drivers and see how that fairs.

Is your CPU OCed at all ? As this sounds like an OC issue to be honest, Yes you maybe stable with 1 app that’s CPU heavy, but you need to also realize that every app act’s differently with the CPU, I remember when I 1st OCed my 955BE to 4Ghz an thought it was stable after an 12 hour test with Prime95 that I had a stable OC, how ever 2 weeks later when I was playing Skyrim I had a BSOD, but prior to that everything else I ran was fine. So If you are OCing Anything reverse the OC an then play GW2 and see how that pans out.

The other thing that Might be causing the BSODs is that some component/s might actually be not getting all the power it needs to run at the loads GW2 puts on it, usually this is the CPU. It’s kind of like a bad OC in that the OC needs more power to run stable, but in this case you could be stock but Still need more power because of the load on the components. PCs are sometimes really temperamental at times lols.

I agree with Nova, upgrade to the i5 k and your notice a good increase in performance, and the HD5770 shouldn’t have any issues keeping up so long as your res doesn’t exceed 1680×1050 just don’t expect to amp all the settings to max, esp shadows.

An to SolarNova, what do you mean by Nvidia held back… ?

To be quite honest I’d look into a decent Discrete video card, it’ll allow you to play with higher, more enjoyable settings/FPS. Your be lucky to see past 30 FPS with that onboard video card as it just doesn’t have the horse power to run GW2 at a good pace.

Do you know how big your power supply is on that PC ? It’s the Box inside the PC with all the wires coming out of it your need to know incase you plan to upgrade the video card.

If you can swing it I’d look into one of these to replace that onboard video.

Edit
Just took another look at your DxDiag, and noticed Notebook are you trying to run GW2 on a Laptop ? If so then scratch the idea of replacing the video card cause your kind of stuck with what you got :/.

Are you still using the stock cooler that came with that 955BE ? For reference I’m using a Zalman CNPS10X Performa with 2 120mm fans in a push/pull config, you might want to look into that, there about $50 atm last I knew and totally worth it lols. That 65c should drop to around 45c at load at that OC with this cooler. Just some food for thought!.

Your over heating pretty badly with that 955BE, 65c is 149F which is kitten hot, which is part of the cause for your slow downs, the other is your 550Ti, yes there Decent cards but for WvW your need more horse power then what it can put out.

I’m playing GW2 on a 955BE @ 3.9GHz paired with a HD4890 and at 1680×1050 res with mostly high settings minus shadows I average 40-50+ FPS ofc like you I also dip to 15-20 FPS in Heavily crowded area’s an I mean Heavy!, but my CPU and GPU Never hit 60c Yes my 4890 stays under 60c.

An as everyone else is suggesting I’d go Intel on your next upgrade, I’ve been with AMD for 13+years and I’m sad to say that I’m very disapointed in there recent changes to there CPUs, Though there GPUs are great I just hope they don’t take there GPU line down the same path some how. My next major builds deffinitely Intel.

This sounds like a memory leak, which is why you have to restart the PC, Yes in some cases you must restart a PC to refresh the memory completely. Something you can try is to get Advanced System Care, they have a free version that comes with a very nice little app that frees up your ram, since I started using this app I haven’t had issues with my ram becoming blotted or excessive leaks.

I’d upgrade the GPU 1st it’ll net you the most benefits atm then think about upgrading the CPU, mobo and ram later, but your GPU is what’s really holding you back. But in all honestly the whole system needs a rebuild.

Here’s a system that wont have any issues playing GW2 maxed out minus AA ofc.

Total $1,139.95 USD yes pricy, but totally worth it for a very decent rig. This is just a suggestion and an area to look into, you also don’t need to upgrade all at once either just whats needed most.

I think at this point an time AMD might as well just packup there CPU department and stick to there GPUs cause at the rate there going, there GPUs will soon out perform there CPUs….lols not to mention I think there spreading there resources to much as it is to do both :/.

I’ve been with AMD since I started building PCs (12+ years ago) an the 1 thing I have noticed is that they don’t make a huge performance jump very often, and when they did make a huge change is was a disaster/disapointment, and not worth upgrading my mobo for it. I still run a 955BE at 3.9GHz but I think its time to change sides CPU wise cause I really don’t like the roadmap AMD is taking with there CPU line.

I’d suggest giving that B55 a decent OC, I’m running this game on mostly high settings minus shadows and average 40-50+ fps in most area’s @ 1680×1050 res, this is on a PII X4 955BE @ 3.9GHz, 8GB DDR3 1600MHz and a HD4890 1GB 915MHz Core, 1GHz GDDR5 I occasionally get dips as low as the mid teens but that’s rare or in super crowed area’s.
As I said I’d try a decent OC an see what that yields, try 3.6GHz at v1.3875 This should be (Ok) with a stock cooler with good ventilation

GW2 Overheating GPUs

Alteris.1528

I have a potential cause for the heat, after doing some testing with the umbra gpu command switch.

The graphics card is rendering everything in the scene!, there is almost practically no culling occuring apart from players on screen.

I think your onto something here, if the video card is rendering an entire scene and everything in it at the max render and little to no culling is occuring, then the video card would have to work extra hard to continue to render at that rate every where you looked, which would lead to all the heat issue’s ppl are getting when playing GW2. I hope Anet has plans to work on there rendering engine more cause it definitely needs it.

GW2 Overheating GPUs

Alteris.1528

@Alteris – I just find it odd that my GPUs are overheating when playing GW2. Every other game they are nice and cool. GW2 is a good game, but not worth butchering my GPUs to hope for a fix for the overheating. I’ll just wait for a decade or 2 till they optimize the engine or maybe when the GTX 700 series drops or something.

Fluctuating performance (no matter what settings used) / GPU overheating = not my cup of tea.

Planetside 2 has bigger playing areas than GW2 and i have no problems with it in terms of performance / overheating GPUs.

Thanks for the reply though.

Then it’s the rendering engine in GW2 that’s causing the issues I know I get some odd slowdowns in certain area’s I shouldn’t :/, Or its SLI related, either way your getting some pretty serious heat coming off those 560’s, have you considered trying to play at different resolutions other then 2560×1440 ? like 1680×1050, 1920×1080 etc etc ? An have you changed the direction of the side fan on the case to see if there is any noticeable difference ? :/

You also have to remember that the higher the resolution the more stress is put on the video card, these cards may be able to run at 2560×1600 but that never means they have the horsepower to actually render a game at that resolution that’s really playable and without a nasty side effect, in this case heat.

Personally I’d rather play at 1920×1080 and have less heat then play at 2560×1440 and take a chance of frying a card or both.

Out of curiosity, what happens to your temperatures if you run both prime95 (blend) and furmark at the same time?

Not recomended to use Furmark as it has been seen to actually Dmg video cards, I’d rather use 3DMark then Furmark for stress testing the GPU.

1 – I have set the fan speed to 85% on MSI Afterburner… Going higher makes them quite loud that I can hear them through my headset

2 – HAF-X (it’s the name of the tower) with proper cooling is already being used.

3 – Using 306.97 drivers.

4 – 850W Corsair TX850 Power supply (minimum 750W required for SLI/CFX)

5 – If cables weren’t connected probably, I wouldn’t be able to play the game atm, let alone have the system running, lol.

Try flipping the HAF-X’s Side fan to pull air out of the case instead of in, the MSI 560Ti TwinFrozer IIs are not made to shoot air directly Out the case, most of it is actually staying in the case, which in your case is creating a hot pocket that both cards keep re-using. Which is part of the reason they run so hot, other reason is your resolution, 2560×1440 is a pretty extreme res even to those cards hence the heat they put out trying to render at that res. Other then what I just suggested I’d really look into re-seating both cards and replacing the thermal paste, its actually fairly simple to take the heatsinks off those 560Ti’s especially just after the PCs been on awhile :P Hint lols. Hope some of this helps out.

I’d double check your systems airflow and I’d also check the thermal paste on the 560s, awhile back before I got GW2 I actually cleaned and reseated the heatsink on my HD4890 and put on my own thermal paste Tuniq TX-2 I have yet to see anything over 45c-48c, I also moded a Zalman 120mm fan to the heatsink, now my 4890 and OCed 955BE @ 3.9GHz are nearly the same temp all the time lols. Airflow and dust will be the biggest issues heat wise so I’d look there 1st.

I would like to update my previous post with some more fine tuned findings.
I decided to change my helm not long ago just to see how it looked and the idle animation/clipping issues with the weapons/shields went away, so with that said I can now say that its being caused by the Banded Helm.

Note that I am checking the Hide helm on and off, so something about the helm in general is causing this issue :/.

He’d actually be better off with a 6770 or 6870 performance wise, I’m using an HD4890 and am getting a pretty steady 40-50+ FPS with settings set to high at 1440×900, so if he could save up a bit more for either of those, he’s better off. only issue I have is that FPS drops to sometimes the mid 20s in big battles, which is why I suggested the 7850-7870s, an like I said If he can save up to get them he’s better off doing so, preferably the 7870, its really the best bang for the buck atm even to the mid range 6ks :/.

Alteris.1528

If you could swing in to getting the HD7870 your better off, that cards a beast, in that I have seen some of my friends max out GW2 at 1080p with settings to there max and still get really good frames, mostly 60+ with the occasional dips to the 40s-50s in big battles etc. An as others have pointed out Nvidia is having some issues performance wise in GW2.

So with that said I’d pick up an AMD card, also the 7770 only has 640 SPs, sure it’s stock OCed but 640 SPs only go so far performance wise, on the other hand the 7870 has 1280 SPs and is a Very solid perfomer stock or OCed almost out performs the GTX580 in benches or matches it, and OCed it almost matches the HD7950 :O. Just some food for thought.

GW2 Doesn’t have any issues running on my OCed Phenom II X4 955BE @ 3.9GHz 3.2GHz is stock. Just to through that out there :P.
Also your temps are good at 41c 41c x 1.8 + 32 = 105.8F so your within a very safe limit, 60-62c is about the Max an AMD CPU likes to run at. Your GPU looks pretty *standard in terms of heat, 62c is common and you shouldn’t worry about that, if it hits 80c+ then worry :/. Also playing in fullscreen I have noticed is less taxing on the CPU, mainly because it’s more focused on the game then background programs.

You may also try this app to unpark your cores if game play is jumpy at all.

Judging by what I know about PCs (Been building them for 12+ years) and what wiki is showing he is Definitely NOT getting that said 35-45 FPS with an HD7350….
I run GW2 on an old 955BE @ 3.9GHz, 8GB DDR3 @ 1600MHz and an HD4890 1GB at 1440×900 with everything set to max/high except for shadows which are medium and no AA :/ and I average 40-60 FPS with dips as low as 30 with lots or action/detail. So you getting 35-45 FPS on a video card with 80 shaders vs my 800 is BS lols.
