The difference between Jq, bg and sor is FOO from Jq and the rest of their SEA crew. So you will get a good fight whichever of the three you go to. In terms of stability… Jq and sor would be the two to choose from.

This pretty much covers it. Whichever one you choose I think you will have fun on all 3 servers. JQ does have the best coverage and it mainly stems from FOO during Asian prime, so if you play on the times they are on you might find it boring there as both BG nor SOR have the numbers to cover more than 1 map against JQ at that time. And FOO are an incredibly formidable guild.

BG got hit hard recently as well with JQ focusing them pretty hard during that time which would shake anyone’s morale. But that’s what you wear on your shoulders being 2nd, and SOR are now facing that (but we are fighting on!).

JQ and SOR probably field a bit more during oceanic from what I have seen with BG struggling a bit at that time.

NA is probably the most even but SOR probably do have the most NA.

Hope that gives you a bit more of an overview. JQ and SOR are probably the most stable of the 3 (just going off history).

You can keep an eye on the score updates in the JQ / SOR / BG thread to give you an idea but I wouldn’t pay too much weight to any of the comments there as it seems to be a troll / slandering fest.

And as a final note, if you do want a friendly supportive server with lots of laughs (we had people singing on TS last night and lots of laughs, consider SOR

SoR Recruitment Thread (SEA/EU/NA players)

Great initiative starting the thread, it’s been a challenge and a lot of fun in T1!

Do come check us out in SOR we would love to have you. I’ve got a long history of server changes BP – YB – BP – ET – IOJ (joined hire) then hire moved to EB then finally to SOR at the start of the year. We absolutely love it here and it is the most accommodating server I have experienced with a never give in attitude.

Especially if you are in the SEA and Euro time zones come help us fill in our coverage gaps to make T1 much more competitive for all 3 servers. And you will even get to play with the NA, oceanics and SEA that stretch their game time just to help cover those gaps.

Despite what you will see on the forums from all the forum warriors of all 3 servers, SOR BG and JQ have some fantastic battles in T1 and most have a mutual respect for each other and all generally just want a great even match-up.

OP I honestly respect how civil you have been throughout this thread and its a nice breath of fresh air to have a mostly civilised discussion compared to most of the other wvw threads.

For something as complicated as a 3 way battle I think there should have been more controls put into place by anet to ensure a more even matchup. Like there are way too many servers in the wvw matchup. Maybe each server should put up a list on the forum of all their wvw guilds, how many people they field, and which timeslots they cover. That would let other servers come in to fill this gap and we will truly see some competitive wvw, which I think is what most of us want. It does require a bit of manipulation and work so quite skeptical if it will ever be done tho.

If TC had t1 coverage, I bet TC and BG would work together against JQ because we are pretty much infatuated with each other. I can tell you if BG were to move down and TC move up, your problem is only going to get worse because most of TC still hates SoR and I include myself in that group. I know I would take a third place week after week just to see how low I could keep SoR’s score.

Found it incredibly fun at launch but it is dieing off for me. The biggest thing I find is the lack of reason to do the DEs which I think is an integral part of the game. Doing the DEs at launch were so much fun as they were being activated everywhere and people were all over the maps.

IMO they made money too powerful and made legendary = money (once you get past the gift of mastery its practically just gold you need). And a large majority of pve players go for legendaries. This made people focus into the gold centric areas such as dungeons and (previously) fractals then world bosses. And left the rest of the amazing world and all those DE chains in desolation. This really killed it for me…

Google how much AMD opteron/Intel Xeon cost (especially the faster models). Then realize this game doesn’t have subscription. Where do you think they find this amount of money for 50 servers? I’m afraid it won’t happen. The problem is just to small for Arenanet to pay this much money for. (with small i mean, for me i get this skill lag for about 5-10% on a global scale, although some days are really bad, like weekend).

You underestimate how much money a cash shop can bring in. It tends to be a much better monetisation method for games than subscription.

They acknowledged it unofficially through a forum reply and said it was server running at 100% capacity or something. Basically the server has to prioritise whose skill to register first.

No official response as to whether they are working on it (typical) but CJ posted in the thread re engineers and legendaries in crafting where he said that the people who could be working on the engi legendary problem are instead working on wider issues like skill lag etc etc. So they must be working on it but in typical Anet fashion they don’t see the need to put out a simple statement that says" hey guys we have noticed this issue and we are tremendously sorry if it is affecting your use of our services. We appreciate your custom and working on a solution asap to sort this out. Thank you for your understanding blah blah". Done and ppl would be happy..

Not specifically looking to win. Just want a competitive 3 server scenario.

For one team to completely dominate, it will ruin the game in the long run. I can’t see BG, SoR or anyone else coming close to JQ (note: it’s early Tue and they are 30k+ ahead already, not due to skill, based on coverage).

Wouldn’t want to obliterate JQ either, just create a more balanced conflict.

This is not a gripe at JQ… we all play the game for enjoyment (or at least I hope so).

Indeed. Moreso it is really only certain timezones that really matter here and that is Asian prime and Euro when JQ absolutely dominate due to the gaps in sor and bg coverage. Those are the times when BG and SOR should be focusing on the bigger demon the make the points more even.

There are times when this is not necessary such as NA when the servers are more evenly matched.

New WvW maps, a possibility?

If I remember correctly Colin posted somewhere that they aren’t looking to add new maps just yet because of the amount of work involved and are looking for other ways to add to wvw.

But the suggestions in this thread are incredible and I would love to see some of this implemented. Especially that one about Divinity’s Reach. Great idea! And already it is such a balanced map out of the box it’s perfect for an urban battle (just like the battle in ascalon) and would even complement the lore a lot more.

I find that the lore in wvw is very dissapointing. ESO does a great job explaining the ins and outs and whys about their wvw. I wish gw2 would do the same and give more meaning and lore to wvw.

Using the pve maps for wvw would be a fantastic way to do this and I would love to see that happen. Screw balance and give the worst balanced map to 1st place if you must. Wvw is already getting stale and this map variation would bring back so much more life to it.

Yeh wvw is severely lacking. Everyone has been seeing the skill lag but its mainly when large large battles takes place severely stressing their servers so that may be why you haven’t seen it Korsbaek. We see it in T1 all the time where there are a lot of players.

Devon has done a much better job at upping the communication but I have really just accepted that they don’t really care enough about wvw to invest as much time and resources as it deserves. Or maybe they are restricted as to how much they can invest in it based on upper management. But who knows. Its a shame really, I can see so many ways to monetize wvw too considering it’s very passionate player base. They make the best customers. Oh well your loss Anet.

You’re talking to a wall. There is no way that SoR or BG will focus one particular server over the other. WvW is full of opportunistic players, we’re all in it to get a higher PPT to stay on top & to not come in third.

I’ve noticed every single day that as soon as we get an outmanned buff, we’re automatically the primary target or vice versa…

Yep that’s exactly it. People are always looking into the short term instead of seeing the long term effects their actions could have. Like the number of times I have seen some guilds on SOR go up against both BG and JQ simply for ppt and then face the full retaliatory might from JQ and BG and get pushed off the map…

I’d happily focus JQ over BG even if its simply to mix things up and make them fight for that 1st place.

I agree with this 100% and have tried to push it many times. I honestly do not know what the bad history is between BG and SOR even after being on this server for a good 3-4 months. But I am sick of seeing the effect of this being the jq dominance which as you say is making t1 stale.

All I see and its happening right now is Jq pushing us in our bl as they have already taken bg and bg of course are coming in the back door taking what else they can. Same thing happens in ebg when we push jq. But it goes both ways and we do that too.

Its time to make it end and make wvw what it should be, a 3 way fight. At the moment it seems like its mainly bg vs sor. The other day (this is the first time I’ve seen this since all 3 servers have been in t1) bg and sor both pushed jq in ebg from both sides with a fight that culminated at jq’s ebg keep. Kudos to jq they fought like hell and fended off both sides but that was a hell of a fight. Give the giant a run for its money

Improving the Legendary effects..

There are others way worse but I would love the Rodgort upgraded.

The footsteps are awesome but so frickin tiny and last 2 seconds.

The torch unwinds and creates a big blast of flame when you switch weps which is cool, and the fire blast gets slightly bigger when you attack, but its barely pronounced.

Something like noticeable embers in the air, engulfing the user in flames, or fire spilling everywhere when you auto will be awesome. Its a shame that the 2h weps get so much more love considering how similar the recipes for 1h and 2h are.

Dreamer, no footprint particle effect :C

Alright, I know others have mentioned this before but just want to check again if the Dreamer was suppose to have no footprint particle effect or was it just forgotten and never fixed? Since I think ALL two-handed legendaries have footprint particle effect EXCEPT for the Dreamer, even some of the one handed weapon have foot print particle effect :\ Not sure if the Dreamer is being forgotten or it’s just not getting any love

I know what you mean, it’s ridiculous they didn’t give all of the legendaries the same love, considering that they pretty much took the same amount of effort to make them at the start (slightly dif now mainly due to the lodes).

The dreamer does have that massive unicorn (which in a wvw pvx makes me target that person first just to stop that annoying effect lol).

My rodgort barely has any effects and usually goes by unnoticed and I normally get questions like “what focus is that, what sword is that, what horn is that”. It does have some nice fiery footprints but they are tiny compared to the other legendaries and disappear in 2 seconds…. The flame on my arm can barely even be seen under heavy armour.

When they made legendaries they said their intention was that everyone around them would know; “wow that’s a legendary” when they saw it. Succeeded in some, failed in the rest. I mean the new SAB focus looks more legendary than the legendary focus.

I find it absolutely baffling how anyone can say that THIS is somehow an “overdue” or a “deserved” change. Newsflash – it does NOTHING to fix how easily they can plonk you on your bum in PvP. This is an almost exclusive, unjustified and pointless PvE change, making rotations more awkward. That’s pretty much it.

What WOULD have been “deserved”? The original idea to introduce Revealed for the old duration whether you attack or not. God forbid that Arenanet make sense with a patch.

I haven’t jumped on my thief in a while so not too sure on the pve affects but yes thiefs will still troll and still dominate as they can still maintain a high level of stealth. Original idea was way better.

I think people are taking this change over the top. Warriors are more than just frenzy warriors. There are so many more builds out there. Yes I know they suck at spvp but they dominate pve and cc warriors are incredible in wvw. With the banner change, banner regen warriors might even prove to be quite effective.

I honestly love the fact they nerfed quickness as I 100% agree with what they said about it. And frankly I hope this will encourage more diversity in warrior builds instead of just seeing frenzy 100b / volley warriors.

Every single one of them was upleveled. This is one of those things you enjoy but don’t brag about publicly.

I see this kind of thing all the time in wvw. People wanting to feel special so naturally they go and find the weakest characters. Killing upscales of those levels (judging by the bag drops) is nothing to brag about. Coincidence that the trolls are usually thieves? Reminds me that this is an inter-age game so clearly immaturity will be rampant throughout it.

Enjoy the victory? Yes. Brag about pawning noobs and ruining their game experience because it makes you feel better? Take that attitude elsewhere.

The Living Story - far too vague.

Yes, that would have made sense, but they needed to fluff up the teasers to cover for the fact that there really wasn’t much actual content in the January/February patches. They needed to preserve the illusion that they were updating and adding content monthly.

Actually, we’ve been adding a lot of content each month of 2013 but most of it hasn’t been related to the Living Story. That’s because the Living World teams were ramping up design and development while other teams were completing their projects. Here’s what we’ve released in the past two months.

I sympathize from where you are coming from and think this is probably more the responsibility of the marketing team but there has been way too much over hype into the living story as it currently is. This has resulted in the incredibly unsatisfying experience that is the current living story, as attested by countless topics like these. The biggest culprit in this was that what was advertised was parts 1 and 2 of 4. What we actually got was part 0.1 and 0.2 of 4.

I honestly like the concept and am looking forward to where it goes. I love the fact that you are trying to re-emerge the player with the lore and beauty of the open world. But I have to disagree with the roll out process which overly hyped lackluster content resulting in unsatisfied customers. And frankly with the bad taste that living story has left in many players mouths, I am not overly optimistic that people will actually check out the next release without just writing it off as another lackluster teaser.

Indeed. Guess they listened to the thieves complaining all the time that the one class that really gave them trouble is a well played guardian. Considering that wvw (T1 especially) is full of thief groups I dread what will happen if this is implemented.

In all honesty, WTF. As guardians we use our boons to make up for a lot of shortlfalls such as speed, mobility, and health. Taking this away from us is just going to kill the guardian class. As it is we are already a liability with condimancers everywhere ripping and converting our boons.

Sincerely hoping this is an April Fool joke.

Spike in full bunker popularity?

Every time a thief downs someone without ever exiting culling, that’s one more person who goes off to investigate “bunker builds”.

The game is no fun when invisible people drop you and you never had a chance to fight back. So bunker build it is. BB’s will fade when thieves get nerfed.

Very true. Months ago when I leveled up my guard I built it primarily to be thief busters after being ganked and kited on my warrior by thieves. But now I have no problem with thieves (especially on my tanky guard) unless they do the usual gank you when fighting someone else or go the 3-5 method and gank you.

A legendary fix to the map problem

Y’know, if certain legendaries were linked to certain/a certain handful of DE chains, it’d definitely populate the maps more evenly.

Like, say, Harathi Hinterland’s centaur chain containing three steps along the event (so people couldn’t just show up for the last bit) and gives you a necessary piece you need a certain number of for a part your legendary.

Special events that weave through a map and necessitate keeping up with the whole thing would not only populate a map but make it entertaining, I think. Money from the kills and the rewards of about a dozen events, with the major reward (including piece) at the end.

I’ve actually been wishing they had a reward ‘screen’ like at the end of a dungeon for long DE chains. It’d give everyone more incentive to do them and see them through, even if the increase in reward was minor.

I like this idea. Having a reward screen at end of a long DE chain will be great for some incentive to follow events through.

But if they ever change the process for legendaries to incorporate this sort of stuff it will definitely have to be for new ones or include a parallel system (which you negate it’s power straight away).

They said they will likely release new legendaries. Let’s hope they see the great responses in this post and implement a different system to attain them than currently.

A legendary fix to the map problem

TL:DR – Legendaries are not legendary as has been said repeatedly. DE’s are dead because people are farming gold for skins and legendaries in high gold areas mainly instances (changing with the new update). Gold is too powerful and is = legendary. Incorporate legendary attainment into DE chains. Instead of gift recipes require grinding (for gold), requiring the activation and completion of X DEs #X times or collecting X trash items from X mobs etc (more thought out than that to limit min/max) will be a more fulfilling experience and PROMOTE MAP DENSITY.

Preface: This post is really intended at putting my thoughts to paper but I would love to hear your opinions and have a proper discussion. This has likely been discussed but I would like to create some fresh direction based on Anet’s goal of fixing the core game. If you have any l2p, disrespectful, or attacking comments I kindly ask you leave them out of this discussion, thank you.

Anet’s plan for the year is focused on primarily building on the core component of the game. Love this and am seeing progress in them making world bosses more appealing already.

What sold me on this game was the countless amount of pre-launch talk on the groundbreaking Dynamic Event (DE) System. And it truly lived up to expectations as it was a heck of a lot of fun at launch. Maps full of people everywhere doing chain after chain of DE content. Anet even said they would be building on it by adding more DE’s throughout the maps.

But then everyone leveled up, spread out through the maps, hit 80 and didn’t need to do DEs anymore. I think the major cause for this is that most of the big carrots (targets for people to aim at) with the main one being legendaries, was built around gold. Gold practically gets you a legendary (you can even buy on on the tp) and gets you most of the stat distribution armour and trinket types.

For a game that incorporates multiple currencies, gold in my opinion is way too powerful. Not only that but to then create a trading post without any regulations simply creates a wide gap between the rich and poor.

Not everyone goes for a legendary but a I would say most do or at least most aim for it. This leads people into the highest gold deriving activities which were mainly farming very specific areas and event chains (orr), and running instances (fotm and dungeon speedruns) thus leaving the rest of the amazing world and content Anet created empty.

So what I think really caused dead maps and poor NPCs not being helped through their DEs is mainly the fact that everyone is farming gold (usually for their legendary or other nice skin).

What I think could be implemented instead was something that actually incorporates all of the world. I personally found the Gift of Mastery the most fun to do when doing my legendary as it involved going out into the world. This should extend into the other gifts. For example instead of needing all of the t6 mats you could have needed to do specific DEs or make it such that DE’s drop items that you trade in for components of the gift.

Or perhaps using all the ‘npc trash’ or junk you get from monsters and needing certain amounts of those. Basically legendaries should not have been = gold in my opinion. Linking them to the actual world and through the DEs would have left more people in the maps instead of instances and been a more fulfilling experience. Getting my legendary was hardly legendary. After getting the gift of mastery the rest was just legendary gold making.

Perhaps they just ran out of time when creating the game but I do hope they head somewhere in this direction with the updates this year. Personal story looks promising and the hints of a scavenger hunt could incorporate this! I miss seeing people in maps doing DEs!

So after reading all of my waffle (thank you) what do you think? Would you like to see carrots like legendaries and gift related skins be attained more throughout the world and using the DE system? Or are you happy farming for gold to get them?

When currency isn't

The different currencies relate to the different methods of playing. That was what was intended. I.e. you like wvw = badges / karma, pve = gold / karma, dungeons = gold / tokens.
I have no problem on them extending on this system to an extent but there should be a limit.

My biggest issue is that the currencies are not equal and that gold has too much power over the rest

First we should answer why so many threads are focused on making WvW less like WvW and more like PvP.

I think you misunderstand my point. I am all for large scale combat. But the scaling is completely out of whack. More than 5:1 ratio and you have no chance as the number advantage is the only thing that matters.

Also its about the decency of not 20v1 a single player. how is that wvw skill? And it ges pretty demoralizing which is why people usually drop out by the end of the week

Roll with your 20 man group?

They have commander tags on for a reason……

This is an open world PVP scenerio.
If you cant handle being outnumbered then WvW was not a good choice for your pvp fix.
Why do you expect people in a large group not to roll over a straggler or rambo player alone in the open?

Better Question-
Do you have any idea what happens when you ignore people in WvW?

I probably didn’t word my post correctly. I am not suggesting ignoring players and letting them go free but imo there should be a scaling mechanism that doesn’t mean numbers = victory. Etc zerg of 30 sees 2 people and engages. 30v2 is a joke. If there were a limit to the number of people that were allowed to damage that 2 it would make the game more challenging and add more depth, as the 2 would be more useful and not simply get stomped

I’ve been stomped and smooshed into the ground by zergs so many times I can’t count. Most times I’m simply running supply and happen to be in the wrong place at the wrong time. I can accept that is part of the game. I brush myself off and go back to what I was doing.

What I would suggest we do in these forums is follow a basic protocol of dealing with alleged hacks/exploits. That’s usually when things start to go south in most match threads. Do as Arena Net has suggested, report the exploit in game, then send in documentation to exploits@arena.net … finally, make an effort to try to contact someone on the supposed exploit team to clear things up before running to the forums pointing fingers. Nine times out of 10 an exploit allegation is simply something someone doesn’t fully understand. On TC, we have taken to writing the following in our match threads when we are unable to reach an opposing team:

Could someone from X server please contact me in game?

Using that simple sentence doesn’t create antagonistic feedback, nor does it sully the name of any server or guild without at least first investigating.

Yeah I know what you mean and do the same myself. But I wasn’t referring to any exploit or bug simply wanted to facilitate a mature discussion about the scaling of wvw. But judging from the other responses here and the flaming keyboard warriors, I see that I was mistaken to expect a mature discussion. I am taking my leave here.

EDIT: Based on the comments here, I should have been clearer. This post is not a QQ. I am simply intending on discussing the scaling mechanic in wvw and how in it’s current state its practicaly numbers = victory. Not in all cases but if your ratio to the enemies is large enough no skill or tactics will save you.

What could add more depth to the game to not make it about numbers? In my opinion something like an attacking limit like the 5 player cap aoes where you can only be damaged by 5 players at a time. This would make battles last much longer and make it more interesting as you dont just get teared apart by a zerg.

Do you think something like this that doesnt simpply promote numbers = victory will be enjoyable or do you enjoy the way it currently is?

I’ve played wvw non stop since the BWEs and have pretty much had enough considering how low the rewards are in comparison to PVE even with the recent update to wvw loot.

But what irks me the most is getting zergd. There is absolutely no code of decency in wvw, if you are running through wandering, going to re-enforce, rallying back to your force whatver (even if you run in pairs or small groups) when you bump into a zerg you stand absolutely no chance whatsoever except to get your face smashed into the ground.

Worse now that my server is in t1, large zergs are everywhere and they can afford having groups of up to 10 camping spawn exits.

If aoe attacks were limited to hit only 5 targets at a time I don’t see how more than 5 people are able to focus on 1 player at a time. Don’t get me wrong I can hold my own with 5 and even survive fairly long around 5-10 but getting gang attacked is just no fun.

What do you think, would a limit of 5 people being able to attack one player work? I imagine it could be a nightmare to implement but the current state is just ridiculous especially in high population server battles. This scaling of population to attacks / hp etc does not seem to exist. In the same way, a massive zerg is able to melt a re-enforced door.

The only thing legendary about a legendary at all is how long it takes to gather mats needed to craft them. They have the exact same stats as exotics and a different skin. As it stands now, that doesn’t justify the insane grind needed to craft the legendary items.

People keep saying they are buffing legendaries. They are going to be better than excotics. I can comfirm this myself, but alot people are saying it

I say to those people the following

Anet said that legendaries will be buffed to be the same as the highest stat tier available but not higher. So when full ascended is released, legendary stats will match ascended. Can’t remember here they said this and am at work so cbf looking. Check announcements to do with ascended.

The current way for obtaining a legendary forces players to play in a very limited way. Grind karma from very few events, grind jumping badges, explore the world as fast as possible, and grind gold (which usually means grind cof, fotm and play tp).

Based upon the recipe anet intended for players to explore and experience every part of the world for you to get the legendary. But that’s not how it turned out. For goodness sake you can even BUY legendaries from the tp now. They need to refine on those requirements. I would much rather go out into the world and play the entire game rather than grind cof all day. Like doing all the DEs, doing different dungeons, playing wvw, talking to npcs, personal story. Doing all those things are how you should get a legendary (albeit it should still take a while).

The recipes are not specific enough, they probably intended for you to go out into the world and do different DEs and fill the world killing different mobs to get the mats ( which would be awesome!) but instead we have empty maps, people making multiple alts to get jump badges, and everyone else in cof, ac and fotm farming gold.

I thoroughly enjoyed getting my 500 badges through actually wvw, 1 million plus karma through DEs and exploring the world and talking to different npcs and getting all the skill points on the way. But all that’s left for me now is a gold grind for the mats of which I would rather wvw.

First time facing DB and i do see some good tactics and some really good golem portal chains. But tbh in the oceanic prime i just played all i saw was zergbrand. Even when you think your having a nice duel or awesome small group battle over a camp, next thing you know, boom zerg.

Serious thought, there really needs to be a balance between the points system and server pop. Zergs are just no fun.

Hmm I saw somewhere might have been the AMA on Reddit that Chris Whiteside did recently, but they said they made a mistake in the distribution of Ascended items and wont be making that again in the future. Think he was referring more to the fact that Ascended Gear can only currently be obtained from one place but hopefully they will fix this issue too.

Honestly I think Fotm (although great fun) has ruined the variety that gw2 offered. Unfortunately it looks like they rushed to get the Fotm out to alleviate the complaints and quitting by the traditional mmo hardcores that didnt have something to grind towards.

Glad they have acknowledged the issue but would love to see some systems implemented that would take advantage of things already in the game like the brilliant maps and cities, and many DEs (especially the lower ones) which are now dead because there is no major incentive to go back and partially because of form.

Enjoy paths 2 and 3. Particularly the endbosses, they’re a delight on their own.

They’re not that bad! My fave dungeon (bias because it has my favourite armour) but you will enjoy it

Who needs 40 US Prime-time players for WvW?

Isle of Janthir could use some more NA coverage as well. We are a strong oceanic server but lack an EU/NA primetime. There are a few NA guilds on the server but we are lacking compared to most of the other T2 teams. With some more numbers we could make a good solid push on the rankings as we are still keeping up despite our lack of those 2 timezones. Also there is almost never a queue for borderlands around that time frame other than reset night. And at most only one borderland has a queue outside of reset nights.

^ Agreed. You will really enjoy your time in IOJ. The only time I have ever seen a queue is on our own BL trying to defend it. We have some great guilds and a fighting spirit. We are usually outnumbered by the other two servers (being BG and SOR atm) but still put up a very strong fight.

The NA timezone is one of our weakest and one that could use your help immensely. We are not looking to dominate the other side but just to have good fun match ups.

I hate when people do this and have experienced it a lot recently. Shows very bad sportsmanship and just makes it even harder to get badges. Which then mean people will just do and camp jumping puzzles all day long which is already happening now.
