Awesome video! Some great fights and you handle the engi really well! Really enjoyed that, and good music too. Balthazar looks like a lot of fun.

Our builds are very similar except I usually switch between Rifled Barrels and Hair Trigger. And I use perplexity as it was soo much fun before the nerf :P. And T1 NA is always 1vx, so need all the advantages you can get.

It depends in which aspect of the game. Thiefs are gods in wvw (in stealth builds) thanks to lots of stealth and ability to disengage and re-engage. Stealth is a bit over the top in this game but that is what they were built for. In other aspects of the game they’re ok but do struggle a bit.

But a thief by itself is ok. The only time I dont personally like thiefs when in a 1vX and a thief comes and ruins or lots of thiefs >_>

New Engineer, advice on experiencing class

Welcome to engineer.

Well for my 2c I leveled my engi purely through crafting so can’t say much about leveling with it.

It took some timebut the biggest ‘love engi’ moment for me is in wvw. Its just so much fun there, you can do so many things (and rocket boots!!), and you can quite easily 1vX.

The only thing I’d recommend with engi is patience. IMO its one of the hardest classes to play well and requires a lot of synergy and knowledge of your class and particular build. But once its played well you will have so so much fun.

perplexity is the only reason p/s is in the meta. honestly, without cheese mode confusion, thered be no reason for it to even exist outside of southsun cove.

i tend to use a scale of counterproductive – bad – viable – good – optimal to rate skills in my mind and for engi only elixir C and AED clearly fall beneath viable. sure its subjective, but you gotta start somewhere to help you choose how to build your toon. the rest is basically finding the situations where certain things are optimal, and then deciding how to be optimal in the widest range of situations, or how to be so good at 1 thing that the weaknesses you ignore dont hurt you too much.

I’m a big fan of perplexity but that’s cause I 1vX in wvw so anything that gives an edge I will use. Saying that though PS is a great setup with or without perplex imo. Shield gives so much survivability. The reflect, blast finisher, knockback and block daze have saved my little dudes life so many times.

Guess thats the beauty about us engis we are so flexible it just depends on what you are trying to achieve

Rodgort extremely disappointed

Legendaries currently have up to 4 categories of effects (based on my observation):

1) Attack animation or movement animation on the weapon itself (i.e. Rodgort, Frostfang)
2) Sound effects
3) Footprints
4) Glow/aura

Right now, it seems that Anet is trying to make sure all legendaries are on par based on those 4 qualities (disregarding whether or not you agree with the asethetics). Look at the Dreamer, clearly a noticeable legendary after one update, now will get a glow and footsteps. Rodgort I believe has 3 of the 4 (not sure about the sound effects), so I wouldn’t lose hope yet of having Rodgort getting a polish eventually.

Agreed. The way I see it, Rodgort looks great, the moving dragon is fantastic and its effects are much better than some of the others like minstrel (which was just bs that the released it like that).

By saying “we think it already looks awesome” I hear that as being – it’s fine we are not going to change it ever especially since rodgort and fsp (which also should not have been left out in the revamp) were put in the same line of awesome as sunrise and twilight which it clearly is not.

IMO anet should have set those 4 things you mentioned as a standard for every legendary then make those effects etc unique based on the weapon type and skin. Then every weapon would be on an even playing field of being legendary. Otherwise change the recipes.

No one has ever asked me omg which torch is thakittens always “which horn is that, which focus, er thats a legendary, where are your footprints”

Yeah they should have at least mentioned it.. At the very least I guess predator has received enchantments in the past. They should have just done something to all legendaries to make them on par to each other.

They made the recipes pretty much the same they should made them all have effects of a similar category (footprints, attack animation, aura etc and then make these effects weapon specific)

I don’t get why you should craft a legendary that you don’t find “complete” and then complain because other legendaries get “buffed” and yours doesn’t.
They are doing a good job on legendaries (stats swap,upgrade to ascended and even transmute reverse).

Imo rodgort already has awesome animations

Don’t get me wrong I love rodgort and still do. Crafted it months ago because it looks great and suits the character well. But it does have flaws. The effects are good but not noticeable enough. Aegis and armour hides the arm flame, skills aren’t changed, footsteps dont last long enough to be seen. Flaws that stand out much more than some of the legendaries that got work done to it like moot and bifrost. And that’s what hurts. It’s not on par with the other legendaries and is barely noticeable as a legendary weapon.

But the harsh truth is that it’s unpopular and not many have it, and weren’t as vocal as the other legendary holders.

Agreed it looks good but imo its not on par to the other legendaries and now the gap is even bigger with legendaries with already great effects getting more love than rodgort. It doesn’t need much work but as it is the effects are barely noticeable and it definitely needed more attention than moot or bifrost.

Extremely disappointed that Rodgort apparently isn’t sharing in getting an overhaul. I guess not many have it, and since the minority wasn’t very vocal they just ignored us.

It amazes me that some of the legendaries that already had over the top effects like Bifrost and Moot get updates whilst a barely noticeable rodgort gets absolutely shafted.

“we felt they were awesome already.” that’s a giant slap in the face. Is it awesome that my non legendary cobalt gives off a brighter flame than my legendary torch? Is it awesome the arm flame is covered by armour and aegis? Perhaps its awesome that the footprints barely last long enough to be called footprints. Maybe the barely noticeable throw torch (only skill change) effect was awesome.

Don’t get me wrong, the effects on rodgort are good but barely noticeable to be called awesome! Make the arm flame bigger, bigger / longer lasting footprints, make rodgort blow a bigger flame (atm it does when you attack but its barely big enough or noticeable enough as you are moving around and attacking), make the glow / light brighter, make the character burst into flames or something…

Sigh… can’t even be bothered logging in to craft ascended weps now

Completely understand how you feel OP and am in the same boat with my Rodgort. This is a slap in the face as some of the already over the top legendaries get effects but the ones that needed improvements got left out.

The ‘legendary’ torch that doesn’t even give off a brighter light than cobalt, that has a minor arm flame hidden by armour and aegis, footprints that barely last, no skill change except for crappy throw torch which you can’t even see.

Sigh middle finger indeed.

I have to say I am extremely disappointed with this. Us minority got shafted as the minority has rodgort. All those points the OP posted about the effects are valid and I concur. Heck my non legendary cobalt gives off a brighter light than my supposedly ‘legendary’ torch which people always ask “which focus is that / which horn is that”

One of the main reasons I was looking forward to checking out the patch is now void. Thanks anet.

Agreed with OP the communication from Anet needs to improve drastically. The only reason a lot of people have put down the torches and forks in the wvw forums is due to Devon’s high level of interaction imo.

There needs to be much more than this. Make it an activity thing in anet that for even just 30 mins on a friday every week al anet staff attend the forums and answer questions. Or, hire players an pay them in gems. Or just outource user fiverr or elance and get more communication officers. They dont have to know all the grand plans but simply reasure the populace or compile a list to pass to the developers.

The living story has great potential and I’m liking the decision they chose to release content every 2 weeks. But the thing is… the story is a disgrace. Its so shallow and there is nothing compelling.

When Scarlett was introduced I was so disappointed. She was such a shallow character. I understand they want to build her up slowly but I don’t think the first impression left a good taste for many people. To give credit where its due though, the back-story was great and completely saved the character imo (should have been in game though, seriously) and shows that they have the brilliant writers and capability to tell a truly interesting and compelling story like gw1 did.

It just seems like the implementation is weak. The bi-weekly LS stuff is still new so I bet (hope) it will improve but here are some good suggestions form WP that I think will be great addition for the LS content. And please… more LORE. More depth.

Disclosure, this has probably been discussed but I just came across it, so seeing as the video is 1 month old perhaps we can discuss the new stuff in relation to the videos pov then.

I think you people are forgetting that for a long time after launch getting badges of honor were like winning the lottery and killing players barely got you any badges at all.

Doing the JP was the most efficient way for people who were in wvw solely to get their badges.

Clearly this has changed now but just keep that in mind as the context of the OP may not be may you think it is.

But at the very least, it could be a blessing in disguise. People that die young (especially those that know it is coming) live more of a life than those that live long do. The very aspect of ‘knowing’ gives you so much power to take into your own hands what you want to do. But never give up. If you enjoy reading, may I suggest some of the works by Seneca, especially his letters on shortness of life. It definitely opened my eyes, altered my perspective and made me a lot stronger in relation to life and death.

It’s been great having you here (especially as one wvwer to another) and hope to still see you in game Palu!

Is GW2 moving away from PvE?

Whenever you see any streaming interviews or updates by Anet, it always seems to be focused on WvW or PvP. The recent major nerf to rangers was done because they are too strong in PvP, so those in PvE got hit hard (no, I don’t run a ranger, just the easiest example).

The recent state of the game on Twitch glossed over PvE, as will the upcoming discussion. The upcoming one is on WvW.

Other than the Living Story content (which contains major WvW and PvP changes) it seems like everything is focused away from PvE. Any class balancing seems to be geared away from PvE as well.

I don’t have a problem with WvW or PvP, but Anet, if you are going to change things to fit that, please separate them from PvE so we who prefer it, can play OUR game, without worrying about our professions or playstyle. I went from other games that did worldwide PvP to GW2. You say you want to make it so that we can play together. That we don’t need to compete with each other unless we want to. Then you go and focus so much on the PvP/WvW/esports idea that you force us into builds and actions that suit THEM, rather than us.

If this game is going to go to PvP/WvW while forgetting PvE, many of us are going to be looking in other directions. And that is sad, because it is such a great game.

Go have a look at how much has been released for and talked about for wvw compared to pve/spvp then some back here.

CoF Inflation

As people are running CoF over and over for ~10 gold an hour for ages now, isn’t about time ANet shutdown this farming already?

I see only a ton of inflation coming out it. Am I wrong? Doesn’t even make up for the lower prices of some stones while everything else gets more expensive for people who just play the game normally (that includes the occasional farmer).

I felt the same way, but have sadly lost faith in Anet to take any action. As much as they say they love making video games, gw2 is more about $ generation than it is about player satisfaction.

Cof = inflation = more $ needed to convert to gems and buy gold (for those who buy gems to gold and there are a lot of them). The gem-gold conversion does fluctuate with the value of money but not close enough afaik.

Otherwise gold wouldn’t be as powerful, the other currencies would have more buying power, we’d see no rng boxes, and they precursor hunt would have long been introduced. I imagine the the mystic toilet is a huge earner for them (ppl buying gems to gold, buy rares, throw into forge in hopes of getting a precursor.). And legendary wouldn’t = gold.

I’d rather pay a sub fee and see non of this tbh. But they know that something that brings in money on the back end (like a gem store) once players are emotionally attached to the game is way more effective than sub fees. Sure not everyone will buy gems, but the ones that do spend more than enough to cover the ones that don’t plus some. All this “and still no sub fees” is just marketing ploy (a good one at that) that make people go “omgty it’s free to play? wow ty so much”. Cash shop when done correctly is more profitable.

How much of what the game produces goes into the hands of Anet or back into improvements for gw2 is anyone’s guess.

Magi’s stats as well, been 4 months since I created the topic above, the artists can place a pacman icon for the accessory’s image for what I care, All I want is the stats.

I’m highly disappointed with the way things are being handled ( or I should rather say ignored) for such a simple and small request. This lack of dedication is what keeps me from supporting the game and it’s also the reason why I’m not inclined to buy future expansions/addons.

I agree. I think there is something going on in-house they are trying to keep quiet about. That or the fact that they probably only have like 5-10 employees doing on going work gw2. But seriously, communication with customers is so so so important. Especially for a product like video games where the audience are passionate about the game.

I suspect a ruling fist from the parent corp, I know that ArenaNet is better than this.

Love this, so true OP and I share your thoughts exactly. The thing that probably boost spvp attendance rates is that people use it to duel and test builds, which generally speaking most would rather do with their pve characters they spent time building up.

Stop ruining our beloved wvw. Wvw players are passionate and the mode tends to attract the older gamers. Gamers who are more likely to be time short and have disposable income. I still for the life of me can’t see why they do not monetize this. The possibilities are endless and all you really need to sell are skins. Hardcore wvwers don’t pve and so can be limited in skin choice. Provide them options on the gem store and bam.

Introduce dueling within pve / wvw and spvp will die.

Torch tactics in WvW

Torch 4 is fantastic. The burn isn’t great unless you have a lot of cond damage. I run a bunker support and the burn provides me additional damage. The throw is a fantastic spike skill esp for bunkers with low damage. And its great to get people trying to run away!

Torch 5 has great dps but is pretty hard to get a decent amount of hits in unless you imobilise first as I find its so easy to dodge. BUT, its a fantastic cleanser of conditions in group battles.

I usually run in with the zerg, apply torch 4, thorw, and use torch 5 to hit enemies / cleanse conditions.

Agreed. ‘lets give the ability to punish people for being mobile to the most mobile class. And the class that gets the most mobility, the best way to break targets and the highest single target damage’.

WTF. If this is implemented as is, one of the best counters to beating thieves and mesmers (being mobile and using your roll heals) will get you killed and force guards even more towards condition removals.

I sincerely hope this has been thought out more than the blog post suggests. Why not give the class that gets kited the most this?!

Hahaha I love this. Made me laugh out loud as its so true. “Save yourselves”, the guardians universal omgwtf “save myself” button haha. Except in the middle of a zerg vs zerg where its more of a suicide button when you pull all those bleeds, confusions etc at once.

Any plans to bring players back to Orr?

It’s certainly one of the options we discussed, however it brings us right back to the initial problem we set out to solve, a large part of the player base was asking for more exciting and difficult open world content in our top end areas. The original version of Orr events were painfully easy, they didn’t scale well, mobs evaporated into thin-air and you had to race to even get a hit in before they died to get credit for kills.

The ideal balance point we’d like to have is with the scaling and more exciting encounters we have now, so it’s actually fun and at least remotely challenging to play there, but also rewarding as well. The reward systems we want to roll out to support those areas are part of a larger reward revamp and aren’t done yet, but are on their way and tie more strongly into the comprehensive system we’re trying to develop, thus the swap.

In regards to regular mobs hitting for insane damage, we did find a bug about a month ago causing many of them to scale way out of proportion, it has since been fixed and normal bosses in Orr should be doing damage on par with other bosses in the game. If you find any that are still nutso, please give us a shout, the intent is they should be fun/challenging, not one-hit-wonders.

Hope that helps give more insight into what we’re trying to do here, these changes are directly tied to feedback we’ve received. You don’t have to agree with them, but it’s important we explain why we’re doing them so folks understand the end goal, which I don’t believe we’ve reached yet until the rewards are there as well.

And now off to do that work thing, thanks for the feedback folks, as always keep it coming we really appreciate it!

I loved the open world. It’s an amazing place you guys spent so much time and effort on. But I stress the word loved because after a month or so after launch, people had little incentive to go back there and it has become desolated except for a few places. An mmo is a lot less fun when your running through deserted maps (especially since most of the content is geared towareds group play). You already know this and are working on the new reward scheme to fix it.

But where I think the major spanner is, is that one of your biggest carrots that tie in pve players especially; legendary weps are so dominated by gold. Legendary weps basically = gold. That instantly gets your players finding the most efficient way to get this gold which had the filtering affect of directing your playerbase to cof and (fotm for a while). Because going into the open world and doing dynamic events would be far less efficient, and if there is an easier option, people will eventually take it.

It never should have been this way in the first place and should have been more tied to the actual world. I.e. to get component 1 you need to get 100 pieces of Blah which can only be gotten from chains X of Dynamic Event A, B and C, or monsters Blerg, blerg2 and blerg3. Hindsight is a wonderful thing (and I realise your business direction of gems and in particular gems to gold meant you had to give gold a lot of weight) but this would have filled your beautiful world with players for a lot longer. Players doing a lot more of one of the things that sold me on gw2; Dynamic events.

Been away for a while but played a week last week and saw this. I feel for you guys, trust me those who have been on SOR for a while have had their fair share of this.

I still remember when we were fighting the hordes of JQ especially when SOR had gaps in coverage or when it was hordes of SOS and JQ against us. SOR have worked pretty hard to fill their coverage gaps but then when JQ and BG lost some coverage we were back in the same boat.

The flaw is in the system – ppt will always be coverage wars. Until anet can find something more fitting we will still see this.

For matchups like these I say we just forget the overall score and just focus on EBG. EBG provided the best fun I had during the matchup with all 3 servers putting up a strong fight!

This sounds wonderful. AC is now undisputed king of anti-zerg. A couple defenders with superior carts can now break a mindless zerg like oh so many waves upon a shore. I can’t kittening wait.

yes they want us to stop playing mesmers, it’s not a rediculous claim at all, it’s totally what they want us to do

mesmers are the ONLY class to use confusion and it’s our only way to deal damage, we’re also the only class to use retaliation so surely it has something to do with them wanting to slowly remove the class from the game

Retaliation made the bulk of the damage component for my guardian build. Out the door now. Cant do damage, cant block or invuln and punished for even having boons. I want a refund for all my gear

Ok so say we have 10 boons on us and a Warrior does 30% more damage to us (3% per boon). Protection virtually cancels out all that extra damage said warrior is doing. All this boon hate isn’t a big deal to me, maybe the thief steal will catch me off guard once in a while but seriously, seems like everyone is flipping out over nothing. Amirite?

Negative imo. That 30% damage reduction from protection helped you survive a warriors already high dps. Its what we have to make up our shortfalls in hp, range and mobility. This basically takes away what it is to be a guardian.

I took my guardian into wvw today for the first time in a week. Where I could normally survive in even a 1v5 for some time, today I just got wrecked.

IMO anet has killed the guardian. Getting punished for doing what the class is supposed to do…

Towers and keeps should be difficult to take, not the cakewalk mindless zombie zerg it has been. +1 for making it harder…oh wait, people don’t like challenges they want things handed to them on silver platters.

It’s how they did it. Yes, they’re harder to take if you’re already in the tower waiting for the enemy. Which means you need at least one person camping in the tower instead of out fighting and having a good time. (Also to continually refresh siege now with the <cough> fixed <cough> 30 minute timer.) So for each structure you want to defend, you need to find at least one person, often more, to sacrifice they’re playtime to simply sitting there and baby-sitting. If you can find such people, towers are harder to take, and that’s not a bad thing them being harder. However, if you don’t have baby-sitters towers are easier than ever to take. You can have the gate smashed down before swords even appear. You’ll see the white “X”, maybe orange in the lords room and bang, it’s flipped before you even close your map.

There was a conscious choice made to take away the fun factor with regards to defending. You can’t be a first responder any more, seeing swords and quickly getting there to see what’s happening and call in the right reinforcements. I enjoyed that to be honest… being defensive eyes all over the map. Forced camping, not fun. Losing towers because you were trying to have fun and didn’t know the golem rush was there until the lords room was already penetrated, not fun. Seeing camps flip without any indication they were even in trouble, not fun. The rest of the changes… arrow carts, confusion nerfs, etc. all are rather tolerable. I can even live with the horrible decision to remove the defensive ability of swirling winds because there’s another means available, even though it’s a lot more challenging to pull off. But the 30 seconds before a warning… it’s really discouraging. The only way to really progress now in WvW is to be one with the zerg, and I prefer not to do that if I can help it. I sincerely hope Devon et.al. will reconsider that.

Great points here. On T1 it was already so hard to take things away from JQ because their superior coverage meant that they held t3 structures whilst being able to constantly flip to paper everything else.

Looks like I’ll wait a bit before coming back if I come back at all. Killing my guardian build; nerfing retaliation as though it hasn’t been killed enough since launch and punishing guardians for relying on the mechanic that makes them guardians (relying on boons to make up on shortfalls in health, damage, mobility, range etc) was just another hit in the balls together with this update.

Yup. 1vx was so much fun and one of my main joys of wvw. Goodbye to that.

Retaliation has been nerfed so hard since launch they might as well remove it. Anet is too busy listening to the complaining button mashers that don’t realise that with confusion / retal if you don’t hit you don’t get hurt.

Well on the bright side, I get my irl back and anet won’t get any more of my gem purchases.

Wow that’s interesting. But it seems acs are the biggest concerns? Is it leading to more defending or have the strong servers just gotten stronger with it being harder to take their stuff?

Also sucks about confusion mesmers, they added so much diversity and were hard as hell to kill.

Turns out my wvw build got nerfed hard too (retaliation guard) might just be useless now…

Might give it a go when I get back from work but looks unlikely considering that its been 8 months + from launch and wvw has barely had anything added to it like its a 2nd thought. We were promised a huge patch in jan then feb then march (culling was great) but all we really got were ranks and they stopped mentioning the “huge” up and coming wvw updates…

Such a shame, game had so much potential..

Hey all,

Recently taken a break from the game, used to wvw heaps and a few frustrations with the way the game was managed (wvw in particular) led me to take a break.

I might come back to check out the new patch but wanted to get the wvw community’s thoughts on how the patch has affected wvw. I have seen mixed responses in this forum.

So how is wvw after these changes, better, worse, more interesting, same old, broken?

I feel your pain. My build was pretty similar to yours. With this plus boon hate given to thieves and warriors and the crappy changes made to wvw (practically still doing things that should have been implemented at release) makes me not regret taking a break from this game…

I’ll log back in to check the updates they did to rodgort and do the new living story but seriously anet… the way you run this game now…. is there no one left from the development team still running this game.. It had so much potential

Which T1 server to transfer to?

I ended up transferring to SoR. JQ holds a special place in my heart for being my first, but I felt SoR was the better choice right now. Mainly because SoR has an amazing NA presence and JQ seems overcrowded. I don’t think the top server needs another player.

Some thoughts, from one day of WvW. The zergs are a bit larger and a bit more organized but the huge difference from T2 is the number of zergs. T1 has much more zergs per map it seems.

Overall I am happy with my choice. I wish everyone the best of luck on FA. I am looking forward to see what SoR holds.

The one in last place, which has actually lost guilds, is not the most at risk? I’m not saying that it’s about to fall apart here, but if someone’s going to drop, they are simply the most likely at this time.

If you are referring to the guilds Agg and FoE, they left because they didn’t like the zerg that T1 can be. They wanted smaller fights, nothing to do with the server, everything to do with being in T1.

I don’t think we lost any others, not that I know of at least.

FoE left too? I remember playing with them in ET back in the day and against them here in T1, great bunch of people that put up a heck of a fight and have some fantastic tactics. But you are right, such is the nature of T1, at least until Anet introduce some mechanics to promote less zerging.

why do you spend you time and effort making one underwater legendary? such waste O_o, anyway is you money!

because it looks cool having ghost sharks on crit while farming invaders doing quaggan nodes.

I’m loving UW combat with my guardian so am considering an UW legendary too. Do all of the UW legendaries have effects or is it like their land based cousins – some have great effects some have none?

Can This Ranger Do Well In WvW?

Don’t have much experience with the ranger but they can be made to work. For example their controls like you say are great. Perhaps also consider how you are going to play wvw and which tier you are in.

If you enjoy large battle clashes you will prob want to go more survival based unless you can stick to the rear.

If you plan to do small infiltration missions and small group battles then that sounds ok. Perhaps try the ranger thread too.
