Know what would be funny? If Gw2 had this crazy idea to allow thieves the ability to have incredible burst. How much? Clearly enough to make a kittenLOAD of people angry and qq.
A thief’s burst has yet to majorly influence a tPvP match for me. Have I been killed in the absurdly short amount of time that everyone relentlessly complains on and on about? Too many times to count. However, I don’t complain.
To everyone complaining,
Perhaps thieves are not broken (there is nothing wrong with them). It has been stated before in this forum (I apologize i can not remember who to cite), but this is how the thief profession in Gw2 has been designed. In other words, it can not, and should not, be compared to a thief/rogue in a similar game.
The amount of whining about this dilemma is over whelming, and I’m sorry to say, but it seems like it is falling on deaf ears, and for very good reasons. The majority of players fail to acknowledge the big picture, and remain so very short sited when it comes to interpreting what this game is about.

If you can read, you’re not intoxicated enough.
Seriously, I understood all of that.
Drink more
Substitutions? Seems reasonable to me. It adds another element of strategy and coordination.
Paid tournaments were not specifically implemented to fix this “problem”. I think it was a general assumption among the gw2 community that, after the fact, free tournaments would be more or less a pug oriented. Thus, there really is no reason to get upset about the current play in free tournaments, i.e., you were not promised this or mislead by Anet.
I understand some people prefer to solo queue free tournaments (I do myself). But if you find yourself becoming frustrated, it really is not as difficult as you would think to find 4 other players and hop on Skype.
We didn’t start the fire!
^^^^ Man up and enter some tournys
Paid tournaments seem geared towards guild teams. If your team is continually losing in paid, than it only makes sense that they play free tournaments until you get better.
1900 toughness is squish squish squish….
I can’t tell if this post is serious
Kimbald, so you want to ride bikes in Gw2?!
When i get bored at work (which happens a lot) I read Gw2 forums. Posts like these make me laugh. One, nothing new has been said or uncovered regarding the thief profession. Two, Seether=only logical player in this thread. I’ll be honest, I did not even watch the posted video, and I don’t care to.
If a thief wins against you 100% of the time…. well, you need to practice more. PERIOD
If a thief wins against you 50% of the time…. I don’t see the problem (assuming players are equal in skill). However, It might just so happen that his victories are derived from the craziest kittening burst you have ever seen, all in short of one blink of your fat kittening eyeballs.
It seems that most people, aside from those who actually do play thief, would prefer the class erased from the game. That’s the only motive I can see from the countless amounts of ignorant dribble regarding the profession.

I am actually surprised that this is not the case. Bunker builds would essentially become more support tanks, but still have the capability to relentlessly defend a point from a roamer. It would encourage groups to have better synergy.
I play mesmer as my main, but I do not use this spell. It should be considered a condition; walking through condition removing fields, like null field, should remove the moa bird affect. Essentially, 1v1, yes you will be kittened, but in group fights you have a chance for a teammate to strip it off of you.
@Valhallen
Dead on, man. It seems almost impossible to convince some players that thieves are not as amazing as they seem.
Side note though: played against a non-glass cannon thief last night. Had some awesome 1v1 fights w/ him at quarry; good 1-2 min fights. Spoke w/ him briefly afterwards, but I cannot remember his name/build. All I can say is that, his dmg was not as bursty as 99.9% of thieves being played, but his survivability was immense. My entire perspective regarding thieves hae been changed. It is nice to see players like this. I just hope that anet doesn’t fall too victim to all of this op theif qq, ultimately hurting a good player like the one I’ve encountered.
If you happen to stumble in to one of these groups. Just kitten on their plans.
The Baker’s of Muffington are looking for a few players to fill our tournament team. Must be knowledgeable of the game and of class mechanics. Not looking for any class/builds in particular.
MUF is a laid back guild; keeping it casual. Tournaments are played fairly regularly, On weekdays between 8pm-1am EST. Essentially, we’re looking for 2-4 people to hop on skype w/ and win some gold chests.
pst me in game if you’re interested. Niptease.8971
Any guilds or groups recruiting for tournament play? I play mesmer and guardian (r21). Gates of Madness=server
I can’t vouch for other classes, but I play mesmer, and I ran staff/sword+pistol. I’ve recently replaced sword+pistol w/ GS. I will not go back. I seem to be having much more success.
You can make it work. Strategize better
I won against 2 players on my Mesmer the other day, in a very close tournament match. Luckily for me, I also managed to finish them thanks to my Phantasms and the ability to stealth.
A very proud and rare moment considering the professions I was fighting (a thief and warrior).
Yes but you’re playing a mesmer….nuff said. Try doing the same with any other class other than mesmer.
Have you won a 2v1 playing as a mesmer?
Who else wishes you could enter The Mists/sPvP from Level 1 and skip the PvE prologue?
in PvP

you could spend several days, weeks, or even months in other games to reach end game pvp. How many characters are you making, that 5 minutes is becoming such an annoyance to you?
id like a 15 vs 15 deathmatch. especially for us pubsters who just want to run out and beat on people for a few hours after school/work
You say you want that, but I don’t believe you. What about it is appealing to you, considering the game as it stands? What do you think the experience would be like?
The experience would be miserable….
Gw2 is not arena based pvp. It was never intended to be and, to my knowledge, is most certainly not anticipated to be. If you purchased this game with hopes of 3v3 death-matches, you are incredibly high.
I play a shatter build in tPvP 20/20/0/0/30, and use GS/staff. I switched to GS from sword/pistol. the knock back(5) is pretty key in contesting/defending a point or rezzing a downed teammate.
Dress it up how you want. We have all heard it… several hundred times before
The amount of “nerf thief” posts is overwhelming. Seriously scroll down the list, bud.
I’ve got the name, just didn’t deposit my mats before I deleted the original. I don’t think you can have two characters with the same name, at the same time.
Having been growing tired of my darth maulesque looking sylvari, I decided to kick it up a notch, and upgrade my mesmer to one of those sexy human females. Why? Because Gw2 did an excellent job of making them just about as super kittenty as possible.
Unfortunately I wanted to keep the same name. So After depositing all my gear, I proceeded to the character selection page and hit delete. sigh, the title says the rest. I suppose that’s what I get for wanting to stare at that sweet sweet kitten while I play.
I would also love to see this implemented. It would make solo queuing bearable.
I feel that the a lot of these balance problems, survival issues, etc.. arise from a few things. sPvP is essentially for grinding glory. Why grind glory? Perhaps you like upgrading your armor skins, I, for one, fall into this boat. The zergfest sucks, but it is a fairly simple way to quickly get glory. If your looking for competitive game play, sPvP is not where you will find it. People need to get this out of their heads.
Secondly, tPvP can, and will be for the most part, extremely frustrating if you do not queue with a group. Even more so, a group which is able to verbally communicate. In group fights, experienced teams WILL focus players. If you solo queue, or even queue with a friend, advancing to the 3rd round is rare. classes are not balanced for 1v1, nor should they be. A well played and organized group is essential.
warriors blah in tpvp?!
Not sure if troll or just uneducated
Every top team has pretty much stated that fact in various streams.
Just looking at what the classes bring to a team objectively warriors have no place on a top tier competitive team. Other classes provide the same roles only vastly superior in function and team synergy.
You can’t go off of what “top teams” are stating because, well, theoretically, there are no top teams (as of yet). I’m not trying to diminish the credibility of successful teams, but just because someone on twitch says that warriors aren’t viable, doesn’t necessarily mean they aren’t (viable).
By no means would I consider myself a poor or inexperienced player, however, on several occasions I have witnessed a warrior, mind you, an extremely well played warrior, contest and defend nodes, and be the driving force in doing so. In fact, I would not undermine a well played warrior even slightly.
I’ve noticed this trend too. It is getting out of hand imo
If you add 2v2, 3v3, 5v5 death matches people would just have something new to complain about. As was mentioned before, pay $15 a month if you want that type of competitiveness.
If you have to make the team wait the entire 5 minutes… so be it. Nobody likes a dirty mouth. Brush on, my friend!
You have to learn to use your 100 blades wisely, and not blindly after every time you charge. Glass cannons…
I feel like I have read this post countless times before… Oh wait! I have!
If your upset with the game, i suggest finding something else to do with your time. It is what it is.
I normally run a shatter build (20/20/0/0/30) using staff/sword+pistol. However, yesterday i replaced pistol with greatsword… and it’s awesome. I’ve been having great success. I wouldn’t necessarily say that it is better than sword/x, but I enjoy the slight play style difference.
edit: in a strictly pvp environment.
i remember my first mesemer… then i grew up. lol at moa on your bars
World of Warcraft was the only other mmorpg that I played regularly before Gw2. Maybe it’s ignorance, but I love the pvp in Gw2! Sure there are a few things which could, and possibly should, be addressed, but compared to what else is available, I have no reason to complain. I enjoy being able to log on and just purely play. The game remains so very casual. PvP requires no grinding or farming which appeals to me like you can’t imagine.
I’ve tried to play MoP, but I become irritated within 5 minutes of logging on. It’s the same thing it has been for years. Even once your 90, you still need more honor for better gear, and more gold to sustain your gear.
Simply, to each their own.
Just need to keep your illusions up and wait till you get some more health to stomp. I suppose though, by that point he should be dead already without the “F”
I’m big advocate of the idea that any team composition has the ability to perform well and succeed in a tPvP environment (assuming players are knowledgeable of the game mechanisms and their respected classes). Granted, some comps might prove to be a bit more difficult to pull off or coordinate appropriately, but nonetheless, I believe still very much doable.
With this being said, I was just curious to hear about some different comps that players might be running and having fun with.
sPvP has gotten a tad boring, and playing the first round over and over again with pug tourny teams gets a little discouraging. I’m hoping to start up some premades in the near future and see where things go from there.
tPvP is strays away from teams with a mob mentality. It it requires you your team to disband into smaller groups. Communication outside of the the game client, i.e., ventrilo or skype, makes it easier to coordinate in such a manner.
The cluster kitten in 8v8 gets annoying in the long run. Nobody communicates via in-game chat, and everybody does what they want. This ultimately turns into a game of follow the leader. Thus, tPvP is the way to go imo.

I feel that this is a good thing, and exactly what the designers had in mind.
in a game where you can have a 10k hp elementalist build and a 28k hp warrior build, balancing burst can be kinda difficult.
that 6k burst on the elementalist is devestating while the warrior just shrugs and keeps on trucking.
Now i do think that if you spec glass cannon you should be at risk for twitch kills. but perhaps not to such a degree.
i propose a sort of soft standardization of health pools in pvp. not straight equalization, but simply a tuning. maybe a glass cannon elementalist has 15k hp instead for example.
obviously some damage needs to be tuned, but it will be quite hard with such a wide hp gap in this game.
just at hought, feel free to disagree
Maybe i should play around with an elementalist a little more, but a 10k health pool?! That seems absurd, in respect to your trait build and rune selection. 10k is some easy meat lol
I feel that illusionary invigoration is necessary in this build. Otherwise it’s essentially the same build that I use… and it’s awesome.
Thanks for the responses. I’ll experiment when i get home from work.
I currently use GS/sword+pistol, and I’ve been having great success; great dmg output and decent survivability. However, I’ve crossed paths with mesmers using staff and they seem to have me beat in both aforementioned aspects, especially survivability. I’ve tried it out, but i just can’t seem to make it work; condition priority builds, phantasm builds, shatter builds, etc..
Can anyone shed some light on this?
Hmm… make a group with your friends, find the tournament NPC, queue up for a free tournament, BOOM 5v5.
mind = blown?
seriously… that easy
SC2 players don’t whine because they ARE getting something for playing. SC2 is an e-sport because it is well balanced. You play for rating, just like in WoW arena. I don’t see any such system beneath 5v5 in GW2. I was hoping there would be 3v3 arena and hopefully 2v2…
Do not compare Gw2 to WoW.
Arena pvp in Cata was tremendously unbalanced, and from what i understand, the same thing is occuring in MoP.
I agree. Allowing people to keep their dye scheme in PvP would be nice.
