The same way you defend your Arbiter, some one on ANet defends Dragon Hunter. Some guy has an idea and wants it to be ingame, so he is looking for reasons why the name is legit. You do as well.
I see, Arbiter is liked by some people but presuming the community wants this is not really true. Instead of starting a campaign for Arbiter it would have been a lot more democratic to atually ask people what they think a great name would be. Then start a voting with top 20 names and finally have ANet pick one of the top 5 – or something similar.
I don’t think Arbiter is the right choice. It sounds cool, but it sounds really bad in other languages and that is something people don’t consider at all. Other than that I don’t feel this name is that great of an alternative and I won’t support it.
I’d rather stick with the boring Dragon Hunter, that doesn’t make sense at all, instead of just picking a different name because some people like it.
If you want the community back a name change, do it right.
I’m totally behind this idea. I am Tartlet on Reddit and started the thread in which Arbiter was thrown out. I had proposed names of my own (Valkyr, Warder, etc.) but when I saw Arbiter I put my chips on it. That said, at this point all I care about is a name change to make the guardian elite the guardian elite.
This name sucks as hard as the Dragonhunter and it means nothing.
‘Tempest’
That name is fantastic on so many levels. It’s a raging storm! There are firestorms, sandstorms, windstorms, lightning-storms, rainstorms! It’s so perfectly elemental!
Even if it’s not because of an NPC theme, it is a very interesting twist to the Guardian from protector and reactor becoming an actor and leading the hunt in the jungle..
But “dragonhunters” are back-line support. They aren’t gonna be leading any charges anyhow….
This name sucks as hard as the Dragonhunter and it means nothing.
Hey, they can name it any of the other amazing names offered. I’m just glad we agree “Dragonhunter” sucks. This mock-up post was simply illustrating that a name change and few key word changes dramatically changes the feel of the specialization.
Meet the Arbiter: Guardian’s Elite Specialization
Welcome, friends. I’m Alice, and today we’ll be talking about the guardian’s new elite specialization: the arbiter—a virtuous defender that specializes in ranged combat and back-line support.
Staying true to the base class, these wielders of light have mobilized in the war against the dragons, ready to bring justice to their foes and solace to their allies! With an emphasis on range and mobility, we feel the arbiter brings a style of play previously lacking from the guardian.
…
…
Supremacy through Insight
Favor in battle can often be determined by foresight and preparation, and arbiters will be able to manifest light-based magical traps that will activate when an enemy runs over them. By carefully setting the stage with a variety of new traps, the arbiter can direct the flow of battle from a distance. Judgment is passed when foes pass over the traps, bringing devastating conditions to the unworthy. Tread carefully, enemies of Tyria…or face the verdict of the arbiter and their elite Glint’s Revelation.
Advancing Forward
Guardians will find that the new elite specialization gives them access to some conditions and functionality normally reserved for professions of a more physical nature. They’ll gain a bit of innate mobility, while the ability to cripple or bleed enemies will become an option through their elite specialization traits. One of their elite specialization traits is Rending Light, which will enable all varieties of traps to bleed enemies. Whether taking on the masses or a single enemy, the arbiter is a force to be reckoned with.
Sharpen your justice. Dust off your resolve. Brace your courage. Guardians—the arbiter approaches. See you on the battlefield.
I must be as relentless as justice itself.
I really, REALLY hope they change the name. Imagine if the announcment had gone more along the lines of…
“Meet the Arbiter!
We’re proud to reveal the Arbiter, the elite specialization for the Guardian. Staying true to the base class, these wielders of light have mobilized in the war against the dragons, ready to bring justice to their foes and solace to their allies! This new specialization has an emphasis on range and mobility, both features that were previously lacking in the Guardian’s lineup.
In addition to reworked virtues and access to longbow, Arbiters have gained the access to traps. By carefully setting the stage with a variety of new traps, the Arbiter can direct the flow of battle from a distance. Judgment is passed when foes or allies pass over the traps, bringing devastating conditions to the unworthy. One skill, Prison of Light, will keep your enemy locked in place, allowing the Arbiter to swoop in for the coup-de-grace.
The new elite, Glint’s Revelation, does something really cool and guardian themed too."
OK so I ran out of steam there at the end but you get the idea.
I think this could be a good opportunity for Anet to get some of this side of the communities support back. A name change would show they are still listening.
Assuming it’s what the majority of people who actually play Guardian want that is.
Any time news comes out of a company listening to its consumers feedback, I take note. Changing the name an easy fix that would generate a massive sense of player involvement with the direction of the game.
We’re pretty ok of the traps. Not over-the-moon fantasizing but willing to wait and see. It’s the “Dragonhunter” name and departure from guardian-esque motifs that we hate. You can’t slap a dragon-looking bow in my hand and give me a trap that might look somewhat dragon-y and say I am uuber specialized enough to be called a dragonhunter. Any thief or ranger with traps and bows could then be a “dragonhunter”.
Guardians were unique because their use of light/virtue/justice/protection/judgement/etc. Those elements made them feel different than warrior and revenant. This new spec takes that away in the most lackluster and lazy way possible.
in short: traps are fine, the “feel” of the class is not. Give it a rename, change the name (possibly animation of the elite) and call it a day.
No, not really. Look here: https://www.google.com.au/search?q=Hunters&source=lnms&tbm=isch&sa=X&ei=VZtMVfayD8r98AW_yIHoAg&ved=0CAcQ_AUoAQ&biw=2560&bih=1369
That’s what hunter means to us and none of that is “Guardian”-esque.
A link to a google search which mainly contains links to the boots-company Hunters?
The real life profession hunter (especially during the medieval times) was hunting animals either for food or to protect the people in the area. The main part here is the protect thing. Which is EXACTLY what the theme of the Guardian is.
It was supposed to link to the image search. Here: http://dnr.state.il.us/lands/landmgt/programs/controlled_hunt/images/Hunters_sm.jpg
That’s a modern hunter.
And here’s a medieval hunter: http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/a/a1/Bayeux_hawking.jpg
FYI, we also know the elite spec for Elementalist’s name: Tempest. What are people’s thoughts and expectations of such a name? Personally like it but that means it’s focused on wind somehow?
A tempest is a storm. There are fire storms, sand storms, electrical storms, windstorms, and rain storms. Tempest was a GREAT name pick.
And IF Eir really is dead (or terribly wounded) and Braham picks up the bow of his mother which he just started to accept in his life, thematically it just fits all the better.
That other professions may be better equipped to handle a dragon head on doesn’t make them Dragonhunters directly. Makes them more aspiring dragon slayers instead.
1) Don’t make player characters fit an NPC’s theme. We hated it in the living story, we’re gonna hate it now, too.
2) There is NOTHING we get that makes us better at “hunting dragons.” Traps don’t- hunters and thieves have traps. Bows don’t- warriors and rangers have bows. We don’t get extra dmg vs dragons. We don’t get extra protection against dragons. Heck, in pvp and wvw, there are NO dragons. ALL we got was a dragon glove and a bow (which are totally unequipable so we can remove the dragon-theme) and an elite that might-maybe have a dragon graphic and can be renamed “Glint’s Somethingorother” or reworked to be somehting more Guardian-specific like “Vengeful Light”, “Wrathful Judgment”, “Divine Consequence” etc.

Dragonhunter theme does work for a Guardian.
It’s main purpose is to protect the people. Hunters usage (other than gathering food) is to hunt dangerous creatures that threatens the people. Thus the hunter specialization works quite well with the Guardian theme.
No, not really. Look here: https://www.google.com.au/search?q=Hunters&source=lnms&tbm=isch&sa=X&ei=QZ5MVdCLCMPImAXD84D4BA&ved=0CAcQ_AUoAQ&biw=2560&bih=1369

Edit: oops, it won’t link directly to the image search result for some reason but go ahead, click in images. Bam. Hunters.

New warrior specialization is called Weaponuser.
Sure, we all use weapons, but the warrior /specializes/ in it.
/s
Yeah… there is no chance that they will change the name.
The patents, trademarks, and stories have already been written… no chance.
Dragonhunter is so generic they don’t need to replace it in dialogue. If I was on my mesmer and I was called a dragonhunter, I’d not bat an eye. If I was on an arbiter and was called a dragonhunter, I wouldn’t bat an eye either.
Also, how often are we referred to by our profession title? Maybe… twice in the start of the personal story… /maybe./ And that doesn’t even have effect on a skill like that is unlocked at max level.
But Guradian’s aren’ t specializing in dragon hunting by using a bow and traps… Thieves and Rangers can set up traps to trap dragons and shoot them with bows too. The only thing we get that is remotely dragon themed is the new elite, Dragon’s Maw, which could’ve just as easily been “Purging Light” or something. NONE of the bowskills are dragon themed. None of the utilities are dragon themed. It’s just a class name, some lackluster bow/glove skins, and a trap elite. NONE of that makes us better suited to be dragonhunters than any other profession.
Worse, the new spec unlocks bows, a backline support weapon. Hunters scout out ahead, tracking and following and snaring prey. How can a “Dragonhunter” do that from the backlines?
Also, I don’t give a kitten if Eir dies and Braham is mad. That’s HIS motivation for hunting dragons. There’s no need my specialization needs to be called a Dragonhunter because of his vendetta.
(edited by Bingo.2174)
The dragon theme comes from the name of one skill: Dragon’s Maw, the elite. Rest of it is the bow/glove skin which is unequipable and the class name which should be changed. These guardian’s are in no way “dragon themed.” It was a sloppy tack-on.
Hunters are about pursuit and leading the lines to an enemy’s lair… which doesn’t work for LB Guardian because it’s still a back-lines support specialization.
Keeping in line with the Dragonhunter name, here are some unrevealed specializations…
Thief with rifle: Gunshooter
Engi with hammer: Hammerbasher
Warrior with pistol: Pistoleer
Necro with greatsword: Swordhaunter
Thieves get rifles and shall henceforth be known ans Gunshooters.
Yeah I actually like the mechanics of the new specialisation. Makes sense for the Guardian to be a bow wielding angel of vengeance that leaps around with seraph wings. If only the name was something guardian or holy themed, and one that could be universal to all areas of the game besides PVE dragon story based combat. Which for me I play once the way through and rarely ever again.
~90% of the complaints are about the name. Most players seem a bit underwhelmed by traps but at least willing to give them a go and hope for the best. The name, however, is unexcusable. We don’t need to see a Let’s Play video to know it’s a stupid name.
As you said, they took a blue/wing/protector themed class and stapled dragon elements to it for no obvious or compelling reason other than the current state of PVE. This means the Dragonhunter is forever intertwined with the PVE living story the same way the player character was forced to act as Treehurr’s shadow for the second half of the personal story. WVWs and PVPers don’t want that- Dragonhunter doesn’t reflect them at all. And most PVEers don’t seem to want that either… They’re not hunters. Their Guardians with launchable traps but still ultimately a back-line character. How can you be back line and simultaneously “leading the hunt”?
Chronomancer literally means a Mancer of Chrono, a Practicer of Time. A Time Controller. I just, im really agast at how there’s so much outrage against the timplicity of Dragonhunter when Chronomancer was the same thing. Is it just because its Latin? Dracovenotar sounds wierder to me.
“mancer” is typical suffix for different types of magic practitioners. Like necromancer, pyromancer, etc.
Chronomancer feels like a “proper” name as a result. Where as using a two word descriptor like “dragon hunter” sounds a little uninspired.
It’s honestly not a big deal, I just think they could have found something more appropriate and better sounding.
Like if necromancers get shouts and are called “Banshee”, that would be cool. Thematically appropriate and speaks to what they do/what skills they got. But if they were called “Voice commanders”, no matter how appropriate of a descriptor it is, it doesn’t sound like a good spec name.Imagine if warriors were called “Weapon Fighters”, engineers were called “Gadget Users”, mesmers were called “Illusion mages”, etc.
They all work as names, it’s just not a very appealing naming convention to follow.
QFT.
A broad, uninspired descriptor class name is not elegant or fun. It’s lazy, limiting, and lacking soul.
(edited by Bingo.2174)
Since the expansion is still in the testing phases, it would be cool to take on community feedback in regards to the name. But then again I’m the camp where I find the name to be incredibly jarring.
I’m in the camp of: well the name is ok… but what does dragon hunting have to do with it?
If they can explain in today’s livestream how the dragon hunting theme fits into it, I’ll be fine with the name.
To me it just feels like all the dragon elements were needlessly tacked on. Chronomancers get time magic so BAM clock motifs on all the skills and shields! But then Guardian threw the team for a loop and the best they could come up with was “make it dragon themed” so we get a dame, Dragonhunter, an elite, Dragon Maw, and a dragon bow skin. None of these elements fits with the Guardian Archetype the way clocks and time fit with Mesmers.
They’re tying the specialization in with the story way too tightly. WVW and PVP don’t have dragons, for instance. And dragons aren’t the only threat that has threatened to wipe Tyria from existence.
(edited by Bingo.2174)
There are no dragons in SPVP or WVW. Give us a name that reflects a class for all people, regardless of if they play the story or not!!!
Arbiter is awesome but if that doesn’t work, there’s a slew of other names. Valkyr, Keeper, Seeker, Stalwart, Warder, Bastion. ANY SINGLE ONE OF THOSE IS BETTER THAN DRAGONHUNTER.
If voice acting is a problem, leave it as it is. Dragonhunter is SO generic a term that no one would bat an eye at being called it, not necromancers, not warriors, not chronomancers. It’s basically just a title that describes what every PVEer is doing.
Dear Anet, I hate it.
There are no dragons in SPVP. There are no dragons in WVW.
Pick any other name- Bastion, Stalwart, Valkyr, Arbiter, Warder.
Via the TOR wiki:
“Because of widespread community dissatisfaction on the decision to name the telekinetic focused Consular advanced class the Jedi Wizard, Bioware released a poll on the 5th November 2010 with a choice of 4 (including the incumbent):
Jedi Sage – 55.46%
Jedi Adept – 23.85%
Jedi Seer – 16.91%
Jedi Wizard – 3.78%"
If EA can do it, Anet can do it!
Anything reasonable other than Dragonhunter.
The name is soooo generic that if voice-recordings are an issue, the could100% leave all voice recordings calling us Dragonhunters post-name change and and no one would notice.
The name is soooo generic that they could100% leave all voice recordings calling us Dragonhunters and no one would notice.
At all.
Hell, they could save money and just use the term Dragonhunter to refer to all classes in dialogue.
I vote for a name change!
Please release a version without the fans…. Or just remove the fans / allow them to be disabled the way the headpiece can.
They just hover there and look bad and clip with EVERYTHING from hair to Asura ears.
Furthermore, they’re bit offensive, don’t you think? You tried to cram everything from “Oriental Culture” into one outfit. I’m surprised you didn’t slap a sedge hat on top. :\ For a game that removed the Canthan District because of backlash on appropriation, you jumped the shark on this outfit.
Necroing this.seeing as it has been requested over and over and not fixed. Kudzu’s bowstring looks bad. Very bad. The 2013 “fix” of making it longer was laughable. Please make the bow invisible.
If you don’t know how bad it looks, check out this image: http://wiki.guildwars2.com/images/thumb/e/eb/Kudzu_stowed.jpg/459px-Kudzu_stowed.jpg
