Can we stay on topic and not let a troll hijack this thread? :P

Why do people keep using the term free to play for buy to play games? What is so difficult about it?

Is that really all you got from this thread?

Buy to play. You know exactly what I meant.

I’ve read at least four separate threads today that contained complaints that were based on the logical foundation that every game needs a carrot on a stick to lead the player forward through it, or people will lose interest. This raised an interesting question for me:

Seriously, guys? Really?

I mean, is this what modern gaming culture is now, or is this just a temporary theme that will kind of dissipate over time?

Being in my late 20’s, I grew up on video games as they originated (Or, at least fairly close to how they originated.) Mario and other NES games did not have a “carrot on the end of the stick.” The reward you got for playing the game was the enjoyment you got out of playing the game itself.

It seems to me like you are all coming into every single modern video game with some sort of self imposed sense of righteousness, like the developers OWE you for choosing to play their game.

Lots of modern MMOs imposed the “carrot on a stick” rule because they realized that their games would stagnate over time, and they needed a way to keep people running on the treadmill and shelling out $15 a month in order to stay afloat in a dog eat dog business world.

Guess what? This is a free to play game. That mentality is absurdist and would not contribute to the kind of game and community Arenanet has chosen to create for us.

Anyway, I’m not a fanboy. I do like Arenanet. I do like Guild Wars 2. I like lot’s of other things too, and I have plenty of problems with the game.

However, it’d be really great if people could just man up and admit that maybe they need to alter their perceived notions of what should and should not be expected when entering into an online world.

It used to be “Give them shiny, bright colored objects at every turn to keep them distracted.” Guild Wars 2 is trying to make it, “Give them shiny, bright colored objects occasionally, sure, but let’s make sure that the real meat of the game is having fun in between those moments.”

TL;DR Version:

If you don’t like the game, don’t play it. Don’t try to change the reward structure for the rest of us who do like the game. We were it’s intended recipients, as such has been clearly stated by Arenanet many, many times.

Embolism:

iDuelist applies some pretty great bleed damage with sharper images. That’s a good reason to switch out of Staff alone, not to mention to get off a Pistol stun to force an enemy to stay in your Chaos Storm/cancel a stomp/prevent a heal.

Rapid: Did you try USING the skill? If you would have, you would have noticed it’s a tooltip error.

Good job!

Anyone else notice the Mesmer trident skill Spinning Revenge causes confusion but does not state so in the tooltip?

Is this a bug, or intentional?

I personally have salvaged my ‘current’ dagger at least 3 times while leveling because of this.

If the darn thing would go into a particular location, it would be one thing, but when I swap to a staff my dagger drops into a magical location in my bag that is almost impossible to find in a pinch.

Fix: Invest in an Invisible Bag. Put that bag at the LAST bag slot, and put anything you want to keep in that bag. When you double click the weapon, your other weapon will replace the one currently slotted.

Dueling? Soon please!

No thank you. It would be different if people knew how to duel one another without being a complete nuisance to the majority of other people around them. Since people have no regard for others, it is much better for ArenaNet to give this “feature” a pass. There are plenty of other games where you can indulge yourselves. Pick one.

Every game that features duel requests features an interface option to ignore duel requests automatically.

Your point is moot.

We will have dueling.

Lack of Mana/Energy

Your mileage will vary greatly depending on your class and spec, but I can tell you 100% that if i keep my damage cooldowns constantly on cycle, I am not doing my damage to the best of my ability.

If I time iWarlock with Chaos Storm, I get a nice finisher. If I time Phase Retreat with Null Field, I get free Chaos Armor.

Again, just try doing some investigation into the way your skills interact with one another.

If you’re playing whackamole, you’re not using your cooldowns to their utmost.

IE: Chaos Armor, mesmer staff skill. 40 second cooldown. If I just hit this whenever it’s up, I’m not using the skill for what it’s made for.

Try timing your field skills with your finisher skills.
Try managing your crippling/immobilizing skills with your heavy nuke melee skills.

You have these synergizing skills for a reason.

So, I guess Lornar’s Pass is broken then too?

Level 40/38 greens in a level 40-50 area, when I completed it at level 52.

Lornar’s Pass is a level 25-40 zone. So, the rewards are correct.

Except no, they aren’t, because the Arenanet employee above just stated that they should scale to your level, not the zone level.

My mistake on the level scale of the zone, though.

Thank you!

Thank you for such an amazing game.

I’d also like to thank you specifically for enforcing the code of conduct at Arenanet.

MMO communities have become synonymous with “total insanity,” and it’s incredible to see a company FINALLY take a stance against this kind of rampant problem.

You guys rock.
