I don’t know what you mean. Lolz
I was rather surprised the game didn’t ship with one.
I add my desire to see this feature.
I thought the same thing, I wondered why the game didn’t release with some kind of dueling option. Most people(complainers) are saying “ITS BECAUSE ARENANET DOESNT WANT DUELERS SPAMMING MY CHATBOX!!!” and I addressed this in another post above.
So looking at all the complaining, most people say “WELL THEY’LL FLOOD MY CHAT BOX!!!” Ok, first there’s block, then there’s auto-decline. Next people say “THEY’LL BE FLOODING THE BANKS”, now I doubt anyone would want to duel in a bank, generally duelers duel in open areas but even so I doubt Arenanet if they were to add this, would allow it inside banks. Other than that you guys have no argument whatsoever. I think this could be a great addition to GW2, perhaps even add rewards/achievements from dueling. Maybe even add an arena pvp system in arena’s like this one I found in the black citadel. It would make a perfect place to just have dueling competitions. For rewards, achievements, and whatever else they may want to add.
NO way there should be a dueling option what so ever, this is an MMO not a fighting game, and I do not want people that feel the need for an Epeen Stoking constanly spamming Duel on me when I am busy with other tasks.
PLEASE DO NOT ADD THIS JUNK.
So.. you don’t want dueling to be added because you’re too lazy to check the “auto decline duels” box? You remind me of the people that think that player mailing shouldn’t exist because they might be sent a mail from another player. If you are afraid of player interaction go play a single player game, this is an MMO and player interaction is what makes it fun.
Really? Is it so hard to buy the amount of gems you want when you want them?
This.
Could Engineer’s turrets have race unique skins? Its really off putting when Asuras the technologically advanced race is making handcranked human/norn machines. (doesn’t look Char design, not enough metal and gear/ engravings)
Thanks,
I support this idea. It would be so simple and easy for them to add as well.
Hiya
Say two guilds wager a certain amount of influence and then they fight. one guild wins the battle and earns the wager. thought this would be a cool addition i didn’t go into details feel free to add to the discussion
It would be a nice feature indeed, but they have to add at least a 1v1 dueling option ingame first.
Nope. Waypoints are a goldsink and if this was Implemented, people could cut costs by a lot.
I’m sure there are other ways to gold sink. Charging 5 silver just to travel from waypoint to waypoint to me just isn’t right. I like this posters’ idea. You got my support.
Arenenet, add in dueling!
Up until today I didn’t care if dueling was in the game or not. I personally wouldn’t use it.
I attempted to do some structured with my BF today and of course I got my face pwnt off by a bunch of thieves that stealth bomb you. After about 3 matches I get into this one where someone let everybody know in map chat they were using the map to “duel.” We were instructed to leave if we weren’t okay with that.
I started to play according to the objectives because I figured it was just one person on each team. I wasn’t okay with it but I could at least play my match since the rest of my team wasn’t useless. I capped the Henge. I was then blown up in map chat and yelled at for being “rude” and quite a list of other things. I proceeded to explain that if they wanted dueling that bad, they should get active and take to the forums at the very least. You won’t ever get what you want if you take no action after all.
If I go into an SPVP match, I want to be able to play some SPVP. I shouldn’t be kicked out by other players that won’t play the match. I’m not the one that’s doing something wrong after all. If people don’t want to play a match, they shouldn’t join one. If people joined a match so that they could walk around and RP, they’d be equally productive as these “duelers.” Basically what it boils down to in my head is this: If you don’t want to play the match, don’t join.
Give people the ability to duel. Get it out of the SPVP maps please. This now effects those of us who wouldn’t even use it.
Yes I have wanted to duel someone before but was unable to because every empty lobby we joined several other people joined soon after. Adding dueling would fix those things. Thanks for your post.
I would love to see an in game dueling option, or even. Allowing for quick matchups with friends to do 1v1 , 2v2 , 3v3
Sometimes you just want to practice against certain builds or bragging rights against each other.
Indeed and perhaps after(if they do) add dueling, they could add extras to it like that (the 2v2s and 3v3s).
Hmm. Seems there are a few opinions here. Maybe I can come up with something ….
- Dueling would be an option that you could set to off either in settings, or whenever you’re asked to duel.
– If someone declines a duel with you then you must wait an hour to ask them again, or some other span of time.
– Dueling would not incorporate an in-game effect, only a pop-up for affected players. So no flags everywhere.
– Dueling would port you to an instanced arena like a dungeon, flat land surrounded by water.
To comment on one of your things: an hour is WAY too long for a penalty.. imagine if you challenged your friend to a duel and he ACCIDENTALLY declined? Just simply add an option where you can auto-decline is what arenanet would do.
I’ve seen a lot of people talking about adding some kind of inspect feature and a lot of people shooting them down. From what I can gather, people don’t like inspect because: it encourages elitism (gear score), it discourages socialization, and it isn’t necessary.
First off, I’d like to say that an Inspect feature is, at best, a quality of life change. It is something that I want implemented, but by no means needs to be implemented in any sort of soon. Moving on.
I would suggest a inspect feature, but only for item names. This would allow a quick search of the internet/auction house to discover where that item comes from, and/or go get it yourself.
Allow me to elaborate further with an example item, “Berserker’s Duelist’s Coat of the Traveler”. This item can be broken down by [Berserker’s]stat grouping [Duelist’s Coat]item name [of the Traveler]rune. I would propose displaying item name ONLY. So for this item, Duelist’s Coat.
DEBUNKING
– it encourages elitism (gear score)
This seems to be the big one. With just the name of the item, there’s no way to tell what stats or runes are on it and thus no way to exclude people based on gear. Also, not having an inspect feature doesn’t stop this from happening. If I really wanted to exclude people based on gear, I still can. I can ask for the links before I invite then to a group. This, by the way, has already happened to me. So I’d assume it’s happened to others.- it discourages socialization
You could argue this, but really are the micro-discussions that big of socialization? Is “What’s your shirt?” “Duelist’s Coat.” “Thanks.” a meaningful conversation? No. Honestly, I find it annoying. Also, if the curious person still wants to ask them where they got the item instead of searching the internet, they still can.- it isn’t necessary
This is true of any quality of life feature. It’s not necessary, it’s just a nice addition to have. As such, this should be at the bottom of ANet’s to do list with all the other QoL changes. But it is needed. If I ask someone what their gear is there is a large variety of reasons they couldn’t respond: anywhere from being AFK, to just not wanting to answer. From there it could take quite a lot of searching, with just an image alone, to try and find exactly what armor or weapon they had.
I agree with your points, anyone that disagrees is simply immature. +1
Personally I do not want duelling or Inspect features in GW2.
I do not want unsolicited requests from people eager to show off their manly/ womanly prowess at being better then me (99% of players are better than me btw), therefore I would want to see a mechanism in place that automatically sets you as “Not available for duelling”
I also would not want to see duelling allowed in major outposts and cities etc (other than in set aside arena’s) so that those not interested in duelling do not have to have bouncing toons and flashing animations going off all around them. The ability to inspect will only lead to more you cant join for x dungeon as your gear is not up to scratch, if you want to know what I am wearing then ask and if I am in the mood I will link it to chat.
You failed in both your points, number one they would not add dueling without certain restrictions + an option to disable dueling(that’s just common sense) and second if people want to know your gear before you go into a dungeon, they can just tell you that you are required to link every piece of gear or you aren’t allowed in the group. That simple.
/signed.
Duel, 2on2, 1vs3, doesn’t matter.
In the streets, on the bed, or in PvP Arena, doesn’t matter either.
As long as we can choose our rivals.
This also allows players to experiment a lot of things and enhances greatly the fun~
This also leads to a “healthier” social life in game :P
Yes I have wanted to test out builds for 1v1s (other than on a training dummy of course) but have been unable to because of there being no dueling option. Or perhaps I wanted to just pwn a friend just to say I was better.. still unable to. Dueling is needed! Thanks for your support.
I too support this initiative. A great competitive pastime activity and a very helpful tool for the resolution of roleplaying feuds. And, of course, those fancy arenas would be filled with life.
Thank you for your support.
Basically this.
Anyone can pve their way to get a Commander Manual without having any experience in PVP and go into PVP having everyone think they’re a battle hardened veteran when they’ve not faced the horrors of player versus player and lead entire teams to their death.
Commander Manuals should cost Glory or some other form of PVP currency as a testament of how much time you’ve invested into it and as a measure of your understanding of battle tactics vs actual players and not AI.
Lawl have it cost like 10k honor badges.
Consensual dueling would be OUTSTANDING. And the near unanimous agreement across this thread, minus 3-4 people, tells me that it’s likely to become a reality if Anet knows what they are doing =D
Keep up the good work, folks!
Yea and those people that do disagree simply disagree just because they like to disagree and have no real logical reason as to why dueling should not be added.
So this is strait out of WOW but the pvp in this game is so much better, I think if you added a duel another player for fun with no consequences feature, that would be awesome! Also, this game needs to do more with structured pvp, it’s fun the way it is, but 2v2 or 3v3 arenas would be so fun, or even 1v1. I’m not saying copy WOW, add some of the guild wars flare to it, but we really need some pvp updates!
I agree. +1 to you.
You can buy char slots upgrades for 800 gems~7.5g
Indeed, this man is correct. Buy some gems my good friend.
costume brawl: proof that dueling should never be implemented in GW2.
don’t get me wrong, i love costume brawl. it’s hilarious and chaotic. but it’s only fun while it’s done for mischief and kept as an isolated, temporary activity (namely, you only see it happening in lion’s arch, where large groups of players brawl). dueling would spread that special effect spamfest to the entire map, everywhere, all the time.
not to mention the rendering issues. in costume brawl, it’s harmless, but if you’re one on one against someone and you can’t see that someone anymore, how does it work?
You saying that is proof you apparently have never played an MMO with dueling. Because what you predict will happen doesn’t actually happen.
Every mmo i’ve played that has dueling ends up with people who really enjoy duelling finding an out of the way place to duel each other. Usually sort of “unofficial” dueling groups gatherings start happening in out of the way places where the fighters will have lots of clear space and line-of-sight.
Because for one, duels tend to be 1 on 1 things. you don’t WANT to duel in a big crowd of people standing on top of each other. you can’t SEE the person you’re dueling that way. you need empty space to fight right.
Costume Brawl does not work how dueling works in any game i have ever played.

That is sort of how it ends up working in most games i’ve played, people who want to duel form these little ‘rings’ in out of the way areas. the fighters go in the middle and fight. Everyone else just watches.
I agree with you, no one else seems to have the maturity it requires to discuss this topic. They are all saying “DUELING MAKES MMOS BAD” when they really don’t know what they are talking about. +1 to you my friend.
Just adding my support for adding dueling – I like the guy above’s skirmish idea as well.
For people who don’t want to duel an option to auto-reject duel requests would be a nice feature as well.
if you turn auto reject on, they’ll just spam the chat.
I’m wondering are there any adults with common sense on this forum? There’s this thing.. its called a block. And what a block does is.. you see.. it makes it so you do not see any more messages from a select player. Congratulations.
so not only do i have to go through the nuisance of blocking every gold seller in the game, now i’ll have to go through the nuisance of blocking every duel requester too? when they could all be shoved on their own special, private place?
sounds counter intuitive to me, to indirectly incentive a well known issue with other MMORPGs when there is still time to apply a better solution.
If you cant handle player interaction I suggest that you go play a single player game. MMOs are not for you, obviously.
When I mentioned the “auto-reject” option, what I was thinking of was literally an option – like in the options menu – where you just check a box and it says “NO DUELING FOR ME” or wahtever… then, whenever someone tries to duel you, the option is simply greyed out/disabled or it just gives them a message saying this person doesn’t duel. I think its probably a very rare occurrence that someone would try to duel you, see that you have it disabled, and then proceed to harrass you in chat to try to get a duel going – and in those rare cases, you can always ignore them. Seems pretty straightforward to me.
I like the ability to duel anywhere because sometimes running around questing can get boring and it would be nice to notice someone nearby and challenge them to a duel for something different to do – a break from the norm.
I agree with you, these people that keep saying “DUELING IS BAD BECAUSE PEOPLE CAN CHALLENGE YOU TO A DUEL!!!!!” are simply idiotic. There is nothing wrong with having a dueling feature in an MMO.. I’ve wanted to duel people before to show them that I had a good build but I was unable to, we tried to go to the mists and get into a 0 lobby but everytime we joined that 5 people would join instantly. A 1v1 dueling option is what is needed and imagine how simple and easy they could do this.. they shouldnt not allow dueling simply because people are afraid of being challenged to duels.. its called declining. If the only excuse they have for not adding a dueling option is “WELL ITS ANNOYING” then I think that’s entirely un-logical and as I have said many times, a dueling option SHOULD be added to the game, it would only benefit us all.
As the title says, often in the heat of battle you get focused on surviving and/or dealing damage (especially as a thief, or other class being played glass cannon). It would be cool if we could have some kind of audio indicator that a teammate is downed, to pull our attention to the party UI. I feel this really goes with the design philosophy of having players watch the action, not the UI. Of course it would be toggle-able but this mechanic worked very well in Left 4 Dead, even if it was the character shouting “I need some help here” much like the NPCs do in dungeons.
The giant symbol over the player isn’t enough? It’s even marked on your map and if you’re in vent someone will say they need rezzed. I see no problem here.
Just adding my support for adding dueling – I like the guy above’s skirmish idea as well.

restrict it to the PvP lobby, in a specific, separate zone. teleport them to a duel map, even (like sPvP matches do). i don’t want duel requests being spammed all over the game.
but if the necessary precautions such as the one stated above are complied, i wouldn’t mind a casual dueling mode, without worrying about special rules or balance. just set a space in the PvP lobby where you can apply for duels or challenge your friends, and that’s it. no glory, no money, nothing. just fighting for the sake of fighting.
because we all know that suddenly the mists would be full of thieves if you could get glory by playing 1v1 matches.
I don’t get why people are afraid of having real world dueling, every other MMO in history has world dueling lol. Let’s say I try to prove a point to someone that my build is better theirs and I don’t want to have to go onto an sPvP lobby where people join instantly and always mess with our 1v1 fight.(it has happened to me before, even in joining lobbies with 0 people the “play now” option fills those lobbies fast if even just 1 person joins) I should be able to just duel them anywhere I want, except of course not in banks etc (like ANYONE would want to duel inside a bank flooded with people anyway) This would save them the work of having to add ENTIRE NEW ZONES just for dueling like you’re suggesting. Just allow dueling anywhere except certain areas.. its the easiest way for them to do it.
Once again, a dueling option would be simple and easy for them to add as well as it would be a fun thing for players to do.
So.. let’s say I went afk for 2 minutes to get something to eat, I come back and my character is immobile, do you think that is justified?
Like I said, people can already do this. 50 people can already run around a TP trader swinging their weapons and spamming abilities if they want so your point is still invalid.
People can run around spamming abilities, but they can’t actually duel. How does that make my opinion that people beating each other up in the middle of the TP is a bad idea invalid? Pretending to fight is not the same thing as actually fighting, or this thread wouldn’t exist.
So.. let me get this straight. You are complaining about something that could happen in a future feature, that already can happen right now?
Make our characters smart enough to auto-attack when idle...

This would be used for autoleveling, stand in an event area and your character could automatically attack everything.. just like a bot. What you’re asking is to allow botting in guild wars 2.
Unless you want to disable abilities entirely at the “bank, trading places and major zone inns in cities.” which is just not logical, just implement a normal dueling feature where people can duel anywhere at anytime without having to ‘pretend’.
How about we don’t allow people to brawl in the bank, or the TP, or any other place where folks are trying to do something else? What’s logical is for folks that want to duel to head to an arena. Besides arenas have places for spectators. Might be nice to do a little (virtual) book making.
Like I said, people can already do this. 50 people can already run around a TP trader swinging their weapons and spamming abilities if they want so your point is still invalid.
It needs an appropriate place for people to duel. Already Ive seen people pretending to do it at the bank, trading places and major zone ins in cities.
They can do this already anyway, might as well allow them to actually pvp eachother. A dueling option should indeed be added into the game.
