Gaile, understanding and not suggesting as an immediate consideration (as this is something I myself have no need for), but as far as display name requests there is a way to do it while following all the “Very Good” reasons you stated above.
First: It should always be a “Paid Service” set more toward a premium price (not just an easy “Meh, 800 gems is nothing to me” so as to discourage its frequent use.
Second: If a person has had any complaints of harassment or anything for that matter that has flagged their account for investigation it will not allow a change at all until fully resolved.
Third: If they had been found at fault for breaking the various rules that being able to change a name would restart their reputation, etc then this can not be done for at least 6 months from the last occurrence (if ever).
Fourth (and onward): Whatever else of importance to prevent issues that I may have forgotten.
Now provided an account passes all of those then a player can do one once every 3 months and when they do they will have something like “Formally Known As” in a popup box when their display name is hovered over.
If a player has not been found to break any rules then past names could start to fall off over a period of time as if they have not broke any rules then they really are not a threat to be in need of starting over with a new name, and maybe this can start at 6 months to 1 year depending on their reputation and track record on their account.
Of course if they become an issue then they just don’t get the fall off or another name change later.
I only suggest the fall off phase based on an issue I had when I was setting up my “Steam” account where I was following what it said to do and due to an error it goofed up my display name to at first only display half my name which I corrected right away, but now thanks that error (which I fixed within seconds) it forever shows me as having a name that was not even my first display name.
Bottom line though had that not happened it would not even have a former display name to be looked up as I have never changed it, nor do I want to.
I was considering suggesting the above, but I have not as of yet as it seems you were trying to condense all of this to one thread.
Just contact support and explain to them that you made a mistake on your Display Name and would like to repurchase the game after a refund so you can make a new one(since you can’t change it yourself). They might not flag your CC if you explain. If they do, don’t you have more than 1 CC?
I believe it’s not a or c since I did those on my run and didn’t get it. It’s a pain in the kitten and don’t even know if possible to dodge all the cannon attacks when Horrik and Mai hides.
When is the last day we can do dragon bash achievements like lighting effigy, killing the holographic creatures.. Can’t find the answer on the guides posted by anet.
Please bring back holiday items and perhaps add new ones. ie. Christmas mini pets, Greatsaw Chainsaw etc. I didn’t get the chance to grab these due to limited funds at the time but would love to get them this year.
Developers getting first shot at names is completely fair and reasonable. It prevents or at least limits people from impersonating them. Granted, the impersonators would still be missing the Arenanet emblem by their name, but there are enough shmucks in this world to fall for it that people might complain.
1 word names were up for grabs afaik. My brother took a one word name during the BWEs and couldn’t get it release day since it seems he was too slow :P Also, lots of people “reserved” their two-word names by creating alts on GW1 as placeholders when they linked their accounts, so I’d suspect most people on the first days were creating almost exclusively their desired one-word name characters.

As to how ANet can implement this, I see the why server based can be problematic.
Maybe a force name change is a prerequisite if your name already exists in that server you’re joining.
One of the best things about GW2 is the way names are game-wide and not server-specific. Having server names would break a large number of game mechanics. It’s not impossible, but it would take so much effort to do that it would not be worth it even if a (doubtful) majority wanted things that way.
I also strongly disagree on the implication that all “good” one-word names were taken by ANet employees. I bought two accounts with the “early start” option that let you start playing 3 days early to ensure I could get all the names I wanted. I got all of them and more. The few others I knew at the time who were also jumping in with the early option also got all the names they wanted.
I can understand how if you did NOT take the head-start option, you might not get your desired names, especially if you have relatively common tastes in names (eg. you want “Sephiroth”, “Drizzt”, or “Harry Potter”). I think you do ANet a serious disservice by implying “they reserved all the good names for themselves”.
OTH, there is one aspect of the naming where I agree with you. I wanted to use Ø (Nordic O slash) in one of my Norn names and the game doesn’t allow it. This is despite permitting many MANY other alt-coded symbols in names, such as accented and umlauted characters. I suspect all it would take to support Ø would be to just remove the line of code that currently prohibits it.

As to you locoman, on headstart, as soon as I created my first character, I added the person that got the name I wanted on friends list and the person wasn’t even online that whole night. I finally was able to see him online a day later and chatted with him just to congratulate him and ask how fast did he have to go online to get the name because when I tried to get that name, I even skipped all the character creation crap and just jumped to last step to enter that name. This was exactly the first second the server went live. Btw, I found out he was a staff when I chatted with him. lmao
Dreamstrom, if you purchased your account fairly recently and don’t mind losing it, I think you can apply for a refund. Once you obtain it, you recreate a new account. This way you can type the display name correctly. This is the only way I see you fixing the name. I think it’s fair since the help desk can’t help you, so help yourself. Cheers
Oh, also, if you can prove to them that your first name is Dream and your last name is Strom, they can change it for you. I believe the feature is already in place they just don’t allow us to change it ourselves but they will change it for you in that circumstance.
I’m not a fan of 2 word names and really almost all 1 word name I can think of is taken. Even as a headstart player, logging on right at the moment the game went live, some of the one word names I wanted were already taken due to them being saved to Developers’/ANet employee accounts(not fair but it’s their game). I thought all single word names were up for grabs on day 1 according to Mike O’Brien but I guess that statement was inaccurate.
Anyway, can we get more options on character naming? Maybe make them server based or something.

Agree with Nullsquare. I don’t understand why this feature would not be implemented. If an account can change their Display Names say only once a year or so, I really don’t see any issues.
I’d also pay $15 for it, and as Null said, the feature seems to be already in place since people’s names are changed by the help desk if it’s inappropriate. I don’t understand the ’not on the to do list"
Just wondering if you can still change the upgrade on the infusion slot if it’s been used already. For example, I already have versatile simple infusion on the slot currently, and i want to use magical infusion now, will it just replace the versatile infusion. Given I have a utility infusion slot btw.
I wouldn’t mind if the feature resets your whole personal story so that you have to redo from the very first. This will eliminate the problem of not matching storylines. They can just take out the rewards since you already claimed them from your previous race.
If my personal reward level in fractals is say level 15, and I do level 16 or 18 for the daily, will I still get the daily chest (one with pristine fractal relic) after killing jade maw? Any of you guys have tried doing this?
Hi, can anyone help? I have 26/27 and can’t find the last feat. Ran through infantile mode a few times now with no luck. I got a feeling it’s in zone 2 or 3 but not sure.
I’m a huge fan of divinity’s reach but there’s just not enough people there. By adding portals to other cities in each race city(like LA), maybe more people will go to these places.
What have you done with these items if you had them before… It’s taking up space and I dunno if there’s still use for them.

Good point. I really hope you’re right. From a cost perspective though, continuing Cantha 200 years later would be cheaper and less time consuming for ANET than creating a whole new idea/place.
They need to make new never seen areas. The actual size of the world is massive.
They have a lot to work with and I hope to see more of the rest of the world.
Cantha would be nice but personally imo…there is a whole lot more they can do first.
On the pic you see the zones that have already been done for GW1 and 2….there is so much more..
Heck even the Southern Part of where Cantha is located could be cool?

To all that have been using Raidcall, have you ever had any problems after using it? ie. Keyloggers, virus, spyware etc. Has your account ever been compromised in any way after using Raidcall? I’m thinking of installing it and just want to make sure first.
First of all, I there are 2 grass dyes on TP. One of them I’ve unlocked and the other I haven’t(weird as they’re the same). The one that I got from a drop, after activating it does not show on my dye list. Please look into this.
It’s kind of funny that services like this won’t be offered by GW2 while WoW which is already P2P offers this(I think I heard they do). I dunno, I just thought that GW2 being F2P would offer a lot more these services for a fee.
Totally agree with you CalvinHobbes. I really don’t think it’s unfair as well to return the name. If ANET can prove that the OP really was the original owner of the name, I think he should get it back. Just give the new owner of the name the option to change the character name to his choosing. Also, your analogy totally sounds right Calvin. Good job!
Hi Gaile, I’m not very worried about character name change because if you really really want to change your character’s name you can always create a new one. However, being able to change our Display Name(name.###) imo is more important as there really is no way to get/change the display name we want once our accounts have been created.
Pls make the biography armors (ie. conqueror’s pauldron etc.) available after deleting the original one. I wasn’t aware of transmutations so I deleted mine. I now regret it and want it back.
On the Oct 1 update, the 8th bullet point under general mentions this. I’m not sure I understand. Can somebody shed some light?
I was hoping to recreate a guardian to get the unique pauldron/shoulder piece I sold as I wasn’t aware of transmutations at the time. Will this be possible now? Here’s the link:
but this means you first have to level up your character to level 11 as this is the lowest level requirement for a shoulder piece out there(if you want the guardian shoulders). You can transmute fanatic’s mantle to a non soulbound shoulder if the shoulder piece is higher level.
That is called Display Name, not account name. At the moment, we can’t change it. But according to the answers page, we will be able to change in the future.
Good point Signet of Forums and Endlos. I was under the exact same impression when I created my other account. I would really like at least 1 change Display Name option. I don’t think it’s fair not to be able to change our Display Name due to reasons above and the FAQ answer. At least with character names we can delete our character and redo. I don’t think it’s possible to delete our account and recreate :-)
