Looking forward to the next ranger nerf?

I think they’re referring to siege weapons and particular boss fights. If they nerfed the ranger, I think people would really be up in arms unless they buffed it in some other way. Let’s avoid worrying right now because no one knows exactly what’s going to be in the patch. Software development is hard work (I’ve worked in that field before) so I tend to give video game developers a bit of slack—kind of like waiters. I tip well because I know what that job’s like. It’s in our best interest to trust ANET to make good decisions.

Edit: To prove Arsenic wrong, here’s quotes from the reddit summary you appear to be referencing:

Upcoming AoE skill balancing (nerf)
One of the issues brought up a lot in WvW./sPvP is AoE (Area of Effect). We feel like they are too strong at the moment and a lot of people in WvW are gaming the system using AoEs.
For people that don’t know – max targets for siege weapons is 50 while max targets for AoE is 5.
Reducing AoE effectiveness to bring them in line with the single target damage skills.
Major update coming to all the AoE skills – make classes that are good at single target damage stand out a bit more.
Same thing with dungeons – right now if you have a lot of AoE you can past encounters by just spamming AoE which is not what we want.

http://www.reddit.com/r/Guildwars2/comments/16rsh9/jan_17_dev_livestream_summary/

So what they’re saying is they will reduce the max number of siege weapon targets from 50 down to probably 15 or 20.

stone. Still doesn’t feel like a bunker at all. Pardon? I have to get lightning reflexes, get a shortbow and greatsword and use protect me with a bear pet in order to counter thieves that turn you into stone?

I stopped reading after laughing out loud at that sentence. I don’t think I’ve ever lost to a thief 1v1 on ANY build I’ve used…maybe once or twice to very skilled players. Almost never does that happen and I cannot fathom how you lose to a glass cannon thief.

i love my ranger (and dont think its UP or needs an overhaul)

but i do hate spirits… and do wish theyd add some kind of pet evade (i micromanage alot; but sometimes its impossible to call them back before a heavy hitting attack)

and have had lick wounds fail on slopes even when my pet was still alive (and i believe lick wounds revives your pet anyway)

Everyone wishes the bugs would get fixed.

The point isn’t that people don’t know how to play this already brain-dead and simplified class. The point is you’re going to be FAR more useful and efficient on any other profession than Ranger. Stop deluding yourself and the rest of the Ranger community

No, you’re flat out wrong because “FAR more useful” is a huge exaggeration and based on your signature, you should know that. The balance between classes isn’t that far off. And for the record, I primarily play dubs, have tested dozens of ranger builds there, and only avoid sPvP because of a lack of gametypes right now.

ANET has done a superb job balancing classes and you know it. Yes, there are problems and tweaks. The point I tried to make (and you probably still don’t agree with because clearly you know everything) was that rangers aren’t nearly as gimped as is commonly perceived.

And, by the way, “brain-dead”? Give me a break. Go say that to the developers that worked long hours making this profession. You don’t have a clue. Here’s some news for you: you simply don’t know it all.

As a BM ranger I think pets need work. Most of your experience seems to be in pve. I only pvp/wvw. I get really annoyed at pets uptime on target. If a player target runs in a slight circle with no speed increases they can avoid all of our pets damage. The exception to this is when I land my slow when off cd. With a good chunk of our damage rolled into our pets when speced for them, I expect my pet to be able to have uptime on a target that isnt actively dodging or increasing their combat speed. My slows and immobilizes should only need to be used to counter my targets speed increases.

The only change I would like to see is my pet reliably hitting targets that arent dodging or increasing their combat speed. I am fine with countering speed cds with my speed reducing cds. That is 100% balanced but simply running in a circle shouldn’t stop my pet from attacking while my stuffs on cd.

This is a known bug with pets that I didn’t even mention in the post because it’s so well documented. I’m not sure why you guys keep bringing it up to disagree with me. Where are you reading this? I didn’t mention pet AI.

Of course everyone wants this fixed. But this point is totally irrelevant and not the main thrust of my post.

No, you’re not the only one. But you are one of the very few who need to gloat how awesome their ranger is even when the devs themselves have said ranger needs some serious help in multiple areas.

I’m not gloating. This is a counterweight to the whiners.

While I agree with you on the sword mechanics some of what you say is well just wrong.

While pets might not need more control the AI needs some serious tweaking not fun when I need my pet and the idiot is off attacking something I did not tell it to attack.

We need better damage the SB and LB both need damage tweaks and perhaps even skill changes.

Spirits do suck they need to be anchored to you and move with you and not die to a single hit like they do now.

I never said pet AI didn’t need work. I’m not sure where you got that from. I think this fact is pretty well known. For the record, my background is wvw and pve. Back when I played Halo 2 competitively (locally) I hater King of the Hill. I still do so that’s why I avoid spvp.

If you think spirits suck, then I can’t take what you say seriously. I run spirit support in wvw and dungeons all the time and we do fantastic. I doubt you’ve tried spirits or used proper runes/sigils/traits.

I can’t be the only person who

A) is successful with ranger, found pets make it easy to do a ton of things in game, and likes the awesome combination of melee stickiness and evasion the 1h sword provides? Guys, the 1h sword is one of the most evasive, maneuverable weapons in the game and I’m sick of people who don’t understand it coming here to the forums trying to get the mechanic changed. Maybe it needs tweaks but it’s a good mechanic, no doubt.

B) likes cooldowns on pets because that retains balance. Umm, instant 5 stacks of AoE might from cat? Probably not fair.

C) knows that a ranger is someone who explores, like Indiana Jones wielding a torch or sword, as well as bow (warrior longbow isn’t necessarily better, I believe that is a myth and the bow plays a different role in the ranger’s hands). Who likes the ranger class and thinks it’s incredibly exciting and anyone who thinks anyone who says it is god awful or boring must be a fool?

D) Knows that pets sometimes don’t “lick wounds” when downed because the pet is dead? That’s the only time this happens. Remember, your pet can’t perform skills when it has lost all health. This is fair…if people want to kill the pet to stop it from healing, thats a valid game mechanic

E) knows how to build pets that don’t die (and I don’t usually play bears), by proper traiting and micro. If you run glass, always put pet on avoid combat! Then order to attack targets for precision strikes. If you’re glass and let your pet roam then complain when it dies, i have no sympathy for you

F) doesn’t want ANET to dumb down the class or change it significantly

G) has successfully run pure spirits and facerolled level 20 fractals
. Spirits do not suck, you just have to trait for it. Don’t tell me Nature Magic traits suck either because that’s a load of “kitten”. You can’t just trait marksmanship and skirmishing then try to run spirits (probably using them incorrectly) and then wonder why thy die. I have no sympathy for that. I have groups that love it when I bust out spirits because they know they get protection on hit thats on a short cooldown.

H) Likes the way pets behave in general. If you want it to stay, etc, use the shouts. Believe me, more control over pets will break the game when rangers like me rock the battlefield. Just last night I held off 10 people by myself long enough for help to arrive by choking them at a bridge and using my AoEs and Barrage. If I had more power over my pet, the game would be too easy

I) don’t tell me rangers are bad when I routinely earned 500k EXP in dubs without death, ambitious warriors and thieves routinely fall beneath my blade

J) does not use “combat mode” because it actually makes the game more difficult? I run a widow keyboard and corsair m90 mouse and spent about 8 hours tweaking my keybindings. I never have any issues with control, have seen combat mode and understands that it would make me worse, and, by the way, I speed run jumping puzzles, which I define as “holding run 95% of the way through”. I also like the way ground targeting works for a variety of reasons I won’t go into now.

I realize this may be controversial and a lot of beginners might disagree with me. However, I’m an old competitive gamer who’s spent his entire life playing games like this—all the way back to Cosmic Encounter. To give you an idea of how much I like ranger in GW2, I have 1000 hours on my ranger and haven’t even leveled another class passed 60. I am running ~20 fractals and completed my monthly dubs slayings before the first week of the month was up.

Don’t sit here and tell me rangers need this or that. You guys need to quit wasting your time with combat mode and actually get good hardware and set up keybindings. Stop going on here and trying to ruin this class for everyone that likes it. And I don’t want rangers to be able to equip staff.

2013 ranger update request

in Ranger

Chopps.5047

My opinion is that ranger is balanced in pve, i have no problems except some bugged skills but overall it’s good. Problem for me is www/pvp and i hope we get some updates for that. The main problem is that the pet’s are way to slow so we miss out on alot of damage and the pet’s f2 skill is not responsive enough in www. And while on top of a tower i need to put on guard to be able to use my pet or if i choose not to i will loose alot of damage. I would really love to see that when we stove the pet we get increased attributes and that would fix alot of issues with the ranger.

I don’t think rangers are balanced in dungeons. The pet requires tons of micro-management just to stay alive, which derails from your damage along with the pets damage. They also aggro random stuff that you don’t really want.

I completely agree with your last statement. Until that happens I’ll be on my ele.

While pet micro is important, particularly for glassy pet builds that ought to generally be set on avoid combat so you can strike when you deem it safe for the pet, your statement is not generally true.

You can run aggressive pet mode if you trait it correctly. As one example, consider the widely known condition/toughness/healing power build popular in the current meta. Now, this is by no means the only case where you don’t have to worry about the pet so much, but I like Xsorsus’s example highlights reels because it shows beginners what a bunker/condition ranger can do.

Here, Xsorsus has full beast mastery with Natural Healing, use healing power runes and power, toughness, vitality gear, along with shaman, Passion flower, or cleric trinkets; trait full wilderness survival with empathic bond for removal, and 33% regen duration in Nature magic (basic bunker build made popular by Xsorsus’s highlights reels). This is an all around solid build and you’ll be amazed at how much better your pets perform unattended. Trait this way if you don’t like pet micro so much. Yes, we can debate the details, particularly the choice of PVT, but I use that for this example because I assume most beginners will be able to get themselves a full set of gear from the popular, easy to find a group for AC dungeon.

You will still benefit greatly for micro of your pet. For example, in COF path 1 you can tank the final Boss for a period while you micro your pet to destroy healing crystals.

In fact, using this build, I have several people who refuse to play ~level 20 fractals or dungeons without me. I’ve also discovered plenty builds that are just as good as this one, only in different ways.

I think many people will build ranger in a way that doesn’t make sense (or is based on preconceived notions from other games) and then turn around and blame ANET instead of looking inward and considering the possibility that “I messed up” and take responsibility for becoming a better and more respectable competitor.

Relax, CW. That dig was aimed at warriors and thieves who constantly deride our class. I was just trying to reinforce the notion that micro is important, put a damper on all the whining about rangers being weak, and also toss some trash talk to other classes. No need to take it so personally.

Now, the part you left for me at the end is interesting.

“So Chopps, if I ever see you out there in PVP…I hope you are ready to learn who is the better Ranger…because you probably have 30 points in Beastmastery and do I have a surprise for you.”

I’m not as foolish as you think (not that 30 in BM / healing power build—widely known among skilled players since launch but made popular by Xsorsus—is a bad thing). My advice is to be cautious with hubris, particularly when you have little information on me besides what little I’ve posted on this forum.

It’s not the pet’s responsibility to dodge from AoE. It’s your responsibility to recognize that and call your pet back. If you cannot micro, do not play ranger. Warrior or thief (noob/beginners classes) are better for you then because all you have to do is spam your basic attacks.

Sword feels really awkward and static.

in Ranger

Posted by: Chopps.5047

Chopps.5047

If the sword didn’t “stick” then you wouldn’t be able to stay on a moving target. Actually, a big misconception about ranger is that it cannot melee and a big misconception about sword is that it doesn’t provide motion.

In fact, sword on ranger is one of the most evasive, maneuverable weapons in the game. People think it’s not because of a misunderstanding about how it works.

You can hit 2 and jump back, select another target and jump towards it for really far, really fast motion. I’ve used this to move from the front to the back of an enemy zerg in wvw before. Also, you can keep DPS on one target, change targets, hit 3 and roll to the new target.

With proper use, melee sword / dagger or sword / torch rangers are difficult foes to defeat. When I roam, plenty of invaders want to take me out 1v1 because they think it’s an easy kill. I have a lot of fun beating supposedly “better” classes like thieves or warriors.

Is "Guard" (Ranger) an exploit (on walls) ??

in WvW

Posted by: Chopps.5047

Chopps.5047

I play a ranger as my main and have hundreds more hours on it than any other character. The fact is that using guard to climb a wall should be allowed. The reason is because if the target is lost, the pet returns to ranger; if the ranger is too far away, the pet returns; a few people can definitely handle a ranger pet on pet spec (not that difficult), and finally, it’s one of the neat things only rangers can do.

People constantly complain about how bad this class is. They whine about pets and everything else. If you guys think this little ability makes rangers easy to play, come play one.

Ranger is by far the most micro intensive class there is. This gives a great player the ability to pwn with ranger. It also makes less skilled players think “rangers are worthless”. I really wish people would stop complaining about ranger and / or trying to buff or nerf it.

The fact is ANET is much, much better than any of you at balancing classes and creating games. I’d have to say they’re at least 1 million times better at it than any of us. So how about we stop all the QQing about classes and let ANET do their thing and choose the direction for the classes properly in a balanced way?

I was disconnected near the ramp; it was laggy but at that point, the server I think was really being hit hard as other servers had probably just finished. Hi,

Two very important comments:

1) The clock tower should be like a dungeon where only the party is present.

2) The loading screen takes too long; instead of watching it, can we just stay in the waiting area and play costume brawl? I’d much rather do that for a few more seconds than stare at the infuriating loading screen.

Thank you for listening, have fun out there!

PS – Rebuttals of other ideas

1) “Make everyone a quaggan” No, I’d prefer not to look exactly the same as everyone else and play Where’s Waldo as I jump. It would look like a Super Meat Boy replay.

2) “Norns are fine I did it 15 times stop QQ” Of course you were fine. You’re the norn that’s all everyone can see.

Malchor's Leap Versoconjuring Waypoint Appears Impossible to Obtain

in Bugs: Game, Forum, Website

Posted by: Chopps.5047

Chopps.5047

On 10/20/2012 at roughly 5pm server time, my party attempted the Versoconjuring Waypoint but found it extremely bugged. I quickly skimmed this forum and did not see a duplicate post.

So what is this all about?

Let’s start with what we used to know to be true: that you could swim to the north and get the waypoint from the water (through the glass).

Yes, of course, we know now that doesn’t work. But it gets stranger.

Upon approaching the glass, we mysteriously teleported to the southern beach of the island. Confused, we proceeded to the door to enter the island and fight through the mobs to the waypoint. Hmm…the door doesn’t open. What now?

We found we could jump around the door by hopping on rocks, starting just a few meters right of the door. So we hopped the door. Woot woot!

We jumped in the small water passageway and happily swam…!!! BOOM

teleported again to the southern beach of the island.

Assuming it was bugged, we gave up.

Another strange thing is the mysterious currents just southwest of the island. These currents protude into the map and push you back – causing you to become stuck in the water – even though the map shows the region as explored. This is the area between the island and the most western POI on the map.

Thank you for your time.
