The lowest level of MacBook Pro I could find with a 2.3 GHz CPU and an ATI with 256 MB of RAM would meet the minimum requirements. However, just barely. So keep in mind that while you should be able to install and run the game, performance may not be too good.
So here’s the scoop: there’s no official support for GW2 on a Mac. There’s many ways to do it, but the only way Anet will officially support you is Bootcamp. Using Bootcamp, you can actually install Windows on a Mac. Once you run Windows, it’s as simple an install as for every other Windows based computer.
To learn more about Bootcamp, head on over to Apple’s site: http://www.apple.com/support/bootcamp/
@DarthVader.7520
I play the game on a 620 GT
@Dracule.4379
Your installer does not run and install the game because your videocard does not meet the minimum requirements to run the game. I’m sorry to say that without a newer videocard you will not be able to install.
@zjsilva.2173
There’s not much more that I, as a player, can do for you. But you should have a support ticket open already and if you didn’t do that yet you should do that ASAP.
@SChoi.3679
Sorry to say your videocard (as shown in this report) is not meeting the minimum levels for the game. Unfortunately it does not show you that in a popup or error message, but that is why the installer does not finish.
@Pishulinac.4176
Good news! Hope to see you in game some time!
@Chambeastly.6217
If you cleaned your computer and no non essentials are running you should see some improvement. Without any game running you can press CTRL-SHIFT-ESC to start the Task Manager and see what your resources are like. But it sounds to me like the game is not running impossibly slow. It sounds like you could gain a few FPS by making tweaks but I doubt you can make it run at 60 FPS
@Pishulinac.4176
The problem you have is that you are creating a GW2.tmp file that cannot be accessed. If you click this link it will (or should) open a folder on your computer: file:\\C:\Users\OLUJIC\AppData\Local\Temp\
In this folder you should see a file named GW2.tmp. What is the size of this file?
It would also help a lot if you posted a Game Advisor report, which can be gotten here: http://us.ncsoft.com/gameadvisor
Guys, let’s not get carried away with arguing here. The OP made this thread to get help with his issue. Not to hear how others have it worse on a better system or other arguments. When Elred.4709 responds to is with a diagnostic log we can see what we can do to help him.
@Chambeastly.6217
It’s not really fair to compare WoW to GW2. GW2 came out a week ago, WoW almost 8 years ago. So of course they run differently. Now, I read your DxDiag and what I can’t help but notice is that you have 4 GB of RAM and over 3 GB of pagefile. You should not have to use that much pagefile and that indicates to me you have a lot of running processes or a computer that is performing subpar.
if I were you, I would start with disabling all non essential startup items and services and of course update your Windows as well as your Nvidia drivers to the 304 or 306 release.
Lastly, a program like CCleaner can help clean out space on your drive which hopefully would speed up how well the game runs.
@JLPate.5439
I’m sorry to say that your video card does not seem to meet the minimum requirements. It has not been officially confirmed, but that was my issue as well. Replacing my card with a newer videocard allowed the launcher/installer to finish installing.
@Pishulinac.4176
Your videocard should do the trick, but have you made sure you have the beta 304 or 306 drivers from Nvidia? Also, make sure you kill some running processes that can be causing bandwidth and networking issues, such as uTorrent, McAfee and AVG. And whil we are on the topic of antivirus: make sure you only run one antivirus at any one time. Multiple AV and firewall programs can conflict with each other and cause unexpected behavior from your software.
@Pilgrim Dread.6847 and @zjsilva.2173
I don’t think I can offer any more help to you guys. Without the insider knowledge of being an Anet employee my resources are dried up here! I see no reason why it should not work now, but apprently it does not. Make sure all your videocard drivers are up to date (304 for Nvidia and 12.8 for ATI and CAP 2 for ATI as well) and make sure your Windows updates are all applied. Make sure you ahve a technical support ticket as well if you had not already.
@zjsilva.2173
My only concern for you report is that you keep getting this in all traceroutes:
Tracing route to 206-127-158-31.plaync.com [206.127.158.31]
over a maximum of 30 hops:
0 No resources.
The first hop failing indicates an issue with the signal not being able to leave your computer. If at least the second hop was listed it would mean your computer is fine but the device it is trying to reach is not. This seems to be your local computer. The big problem here is that it’s not one or two traces that fail, but all of them. I do not have the inside knowledge to know what servers it needs to reach to run the installer/updater properly but I can only imagine that not reaching any servers is not good.
You did follow all my instructions though, so thanks for that. Your computer is running pretty darn clean at the moment.
@Kaarke.2940
Sweet, good to hear and have fun playing! I’ll see you in game
(edited by Creature.9476)
What operating system are you using? Can you post a DxDiag or a GameAdvisor report?
@Pilgrm Dread:
Excellent, and thanks for actually going through the effort. Knowing that it works fine on another computer on the same network actually does help.
I would check to see if that computer is in the DMZ of the router and add your computer if it is not yet, and if that fails I would see if the steps I posted above for Zjsilva would help you at all.
Can you run the GameAdvisor (http://us.ncsoft.com/gameadvisor/) and post the report here?
@zjsilva:
Your pathpings all come back with no resources. Every single one of them fails at hop 0 (which is your computer). This leads me to believe that the game cannot connect properly to the servers. You may have gotten rid of AVG but you also have a McAfee service running. Multiple antivirus on your computer are usually the cause of a lot of problems, and likely you have a program installed that is actually causing your issues.
Follow these steps and try again:
1) Open your Start Menu and in the box that says “Search programs and files” type in msconfig and press enter
2) In this tool, go to the tab called “Services” and check the box in the bottom that says “Hide all Microsoft services”
3) Click the button called Disable All
4) Go to the tab called “Startup” and click the button called “Disable All”
5) Click the button called “OK” to accept the changes
6) It will now want to restart your computer. Restart and try again.
To undo these changes, simply go back to the program and click “Enable All” on both the “Services” tab and the “Startup” tab.
@Kaarke:
Yes. Those updates contain significant improvements for Windows. In my professional opinion, run Windows updater and install the updates found. Restart if need be and check for updates again. Rinse and repeat until you installed all Windows updates.
@Guldekk
Thanks mate. From your log it seems a default RAM or driver error. If I were you I would download the newest drivers and CAP from here: http://support.amd.com/us/gpudownload/windows/Pages/radeonaiw_vista64.aspx#1
Make sure that, after you install the drivers and reboot (if required) you also download and install the CAP (second download). It has specific profiles for your drivers to support certain games, GW2 is one of them and they received an update just 2 days ago.
Yeah, it’s a bit vague of an error. A memory test would help, but it can also be caused by older drivers. Make sure all your drivers are up to date, especially your videocard driver.
@ThisIsPatrick:
Have you tried downloading and installing the new CAP from http://support.amd.com/us/gpudownload/windows/Pages/radeonaiw_vista64.aspx#1
It was released only two days ago and it is being reported to have resolved a lot of people’s FPS issues. (I’m not going to lie, it may do nothing. But hey, a 0.5 MB download and a reboot won’t hurt that much!)
@Mr Brooks
Have you tried updating your drivers? I ask because yours are listed as version 8.15 and the newest driver for your computer and OS is 15.26.
You can find it here: http://downloadcenter.intel.com/Detail_Desc.aspx?agr=Y&DwnldID=21431&ProdId=3498&lang=eng
@Gunthur
It seems to updater/installer does rely on your requirements. I don’t know why, and I don’t know why the updater/installer isn’t programmed a bit nicer to provide us (the end user) with more feedback. What I do know is that it has an effect, so we can’t rule out that it may fix your issue.
David,
Sorry to hear about your problems. I would reccomend updating to the newest video card drivers (Catalyst 12.8 (I think)) and downloading and installing the newest CAP made available earlier today: http://support.amd.com/us/gpudownload/windows/Pages/radeonaiw_vista64.aspx
I know it sucks to have other games run well and this game not so much, but keep in mind that it is both on the developers of the game as well as the developers of the hardware to make sure both are optimized to run together.
The big thing to keep in mind here is that this game is new and the drivers are (frequently) not yet optimized for the game.
I tried to download your BSO dump to read it, but the link does not work. That being said, if you are familiar with under/overclocking, try lowering the voltage of your card. It is the most effective way to lower the temperature of your card without sacrificing performance.
I know you listed temperatures in your post, but the temps you have listed are rather low. Did you mean C instead of F? (I ask because you posted 70F for CPU, which is about 10 C. I’m used to seeing a CPU run no lower than 30 C.)
Edit:
Sorry to harp on temperature, but without the optimized drivers for this game the card can run warmer and have higher usage %’s than what you are used to seeing in other games.
Yes, the 460SE would be a good replacement for your card. Comparing specifications, you should see a decent upgrade in visuals!
Edit:
A more elaborate answer;
The Gigabyte card uses the GTX 460 SE chipset. Comparing the two chipsets:
The 8400 has (at best configuration): 1 GB of RAM @ 1 GHz and 8 GB/s bandwidth and a core that clocks at 520 MHz
The GTX 460 SE has: 1 GB of RAM @ 3.4 GHz and 108.8 GB/s bandwidth and a core that clocks at 650 MHz
(edited by Creature.9476)
I agree, this game is great!
Here’s the thing: the “display kernel mode” error is something I remember from my days of running a GeForce. It implies your video card drivers, or a part of it, have stopped working. What Nvidia tries to do is salvage your computer by then keeping it running and disabling the drivers. I wish they didn’t do that, because this creates what you get; tons of different issues (but they all have the same underlying cause).
In my personal experience, this is usually caused by overheating. I know, your computer runs at 82 degrees Celsius. But what does your GPU run at? You may be able to use MSI’s Afterburner to monitor your card (http://event.msi.com/vga/afterburner/download.htm) or even downclock it. If you can, I would suggest trying to down the voltage. It’s the most effective way of decreasing the running temperature while not sacrificing performance.
If Afterburner does not work for you, I would suggest finding other software. And if all else fails, go the redneck/MacGyver way: Play with an open case with a fan blowing directly at it.
@Pilgrim
Excellent, McAfee is indeed gone so that’s not the culprit. However, I see a large amount of failed trace routes/pings and that’s bad. Now, I don’t know what servers the download comes from but most of the servers labeled as GW Auth Serv are unreadable for you after the first hop. This indicates that your computer has a problem reaching or getting past the first device on the network it is attached to. Two suggestions:
1) connect to your modem directly, using Ethernet. Disable wireless. This will minimize the devices you have to pass through as well as make it so you don’t have interference from other sources.
2) enable the DMZ on your modem and place your computer in it. This will ensure the firewall on your modem is not at fault either.
Thanks for the patience by the way. I know how bothersome it is to troubleshoot your own videogame
@Pilgrim
In the text file you uploaded there still was a process running that is associated with McAfee (mcshield.exe)
If I’m right, this is your notebook: http://support.acer.com/acerpanam/notebook/2011/Acer/Aspire/Aspire5750Z/Aspire5750Zsp2.shtml
And if that is right, the graphic issues you are having are caused by the fact you are running a graphics card that is not recommended. Try turning all the settings to their lowest (change the resolution too), and download the newest video card driver here: http://www.intel.com/p/en_US/support/highlights/graphics/hdgraphics/
(edited by Creature.9476)
@Pilgrim:
Your graphics card should be fine. There are slightly newer drivers you can get but that should not give you the error you got. However, I see McAfee is running. Try disabling McAfee first and then try again.
@Kaarke
The 7750 is definitely better and newer. And newer may be the issue. Try the newer beta drivers found here: http://support.amd.com/us/kbarticles/Pages/Catalystbetadriver1.aspx
I hope the drivers work since the 7750 should be superior in all ways.
Well, I hate to admit that my new video card resolved the issue! I still think its weird that the installer just quits without an error. Maybe a good future change?
Several people are experiencing this issue and there may be multiple reasons for this. If it is possible at all, please run the GameAdvisor tool (http://us.ncsoft.com/gameadvisor) and attach your report to this post.
You are running an Ati Radeon X600 which supports up to Shader Model 2.0 which means your graphics card does not meet the minimum system requirements.
That being said, you also run McAfee in the background and that may or may not be causing a problem with your download. Try disabling McAfee temporarily and see if that resolves your problem.
I am having the same issue as everyone else. I couldnt think of anything else, ive tried all my friends have said im hoping someone can help me.
Unfortunately, I do not think your card meets the minimum requirements (like mine). You have an ATI Radeon XPRESS 200 Series which does not support Shader Model 3.0 or newer.
@Ashley: Thanks for the response. I find it a little strange the installer would quit without providing any reason why. Also, why prevent people from installing the game? I have a new videocard on order (My GeForce 315 literally died on me last week) and wanted to preinstall to play once I get the card. I did not want to have to sit at a 6 hour download AFTER installing the card.
Edit:
You know what, I’ll cave in. I canceled my order for a graphics card and will pick up a GT610 locally.With 512 Mb of RAM and support for Shader 5.0 that should at least meet the minimum requirements.

If you run Windows 7:
Go to C:\Users\YourUserName\AppData\Local\Temp and run GW2.exe as administrator. It will create or update a file in that folder called GW2.dat The installer will stay at 0KB/0KBs but the file named GW2.dat will start to grow in size.
Not sure what this does and if it will actually install/run but that’s my only advancement I have mae so far.
Surfer: You seem to have gotten farther along than I did!
I have done some more testing, although a response from an official representative would be nice. There’s a lot of posts about this on the Googles so we are not the only ones with this issue.
I ran a Wireshark to see what happened network wise when the 0Kb/0Kbs popou appears and disappears but learnt nothing. In my GameAdvisor it states I cannot connect to icmp.arenanetworks.com so I tried to ping the two addresses listed and the ping succeeds. A telnet to port 80 on either address fails, but that can be attributed to security.
I mean, I’m ranting here. Grasping at straws. If at least we could get a “we are aware of this issue” kind of statement but we get NOTHING. That’s frustrating.
Sorry for assuming you posted in a wrong thread.
Do you know how to make a new user on your computer? If you do, create a new user and log out as yourself and then log in as this new user. Try downloading the GW2Setup.exe from the website again and then try to run it. (It really doesn’t matter if you downlod it using Chrome, Internet Explorer or Firefox.)
My reason for asking is that you seem to get a permissions error. The fastest way to verify that is to create a new user (because the system will setup a new folder for that user with new permissions). If it does work in that new user, we have confirmed that is your problem. If it does not work in your new user, we have confirmed the issue is system wide and not user specific.
Tjynde: I can’t even run that executable, it just outright crashes for me. Thanks for the tip though, it did not hurt to try!
Nivrim: It seems that your error is different from what we have seen so far in this thread. However, the -allowinstall flag is a nice touch. It looks to me like your issue is that a certain file cannot be accessed. The reasons could be multiple: insufficient acces rights, insufficient free space, damaged or corrupted file. Try making sure you run the program as administrator.
(edited by Creature.9476)
Banadona: thank you for the suggestion, but our issue is that there isn’t even a GW2 folder that’s created yet. The installer quits before it actually installs anything!
Changing the filename to GW2.exe (copied all the contents of both DVD’s to a folder on my Desktop) makes only one change: the second launch of the installer sits at 0KB/0KBs indefinitely now
I am having the same problem. Attached is my GameAdvisor report.
In short, here is what happens:
1) I insert the GW2 DVD
2) It runs GW2Setup from DVD or I run the downloaded version
3) It runs the loader/installer which will download 10.13 KB and lists at which speed
4) The loader/installer closes and reopens
5) It now shows 0KB/0KBs and closes after being open for a moment
6) Nothing else happens
We do not get an error of an sorts, no error log. I tried running as administrator. I disabled my Symantec AV services from running and placed myself in the DMZ. This computer was freshly installed this afternoon with Win7 x64. I have also tried using -diag and -repair as switches. the -diag switch told me all was well and the -repair switch simply resulted in the same issue. And I can ping both IP listed as ICMP.arenanetworks.com even though the Game Advisor text file says they are not reachable on port 80.
